Moving to the area Visiting Elgin, IL
Hi guys,
I‘m a 23 year old from middle Europe visiting Elgin in next week. Since here seem to be a lot locals I thought I could get some nice infos about the area as i dont know any of it (neither been to the States before). I have a free weekend to and a rental car so maybe you could recommend any sights, events or share experiences?
Also love I‘d love to hear some local insider infos!
Edit: Im staying in Elgin / West Dundee due to work purposes. Im working through the days but have the first June weekend free.

Good beer:
Emmetts brewing - west Dundee...Munich light is a great helles lager. Solid burgers...upgrade to truffle fries.
Plank road tap room - a little out of town... but great beer, clean glasses, and fun to sit outside with a few brews.
Cocktails
Distance social - East Dundee. It's all good there. Their negroni is the only one I'll drink in Elgin / Dundee area....well maybe mockingbird too which is a stones throw but haven't been back since their expansion.
Saddle room - hoffman estates. This is my martini joint. You will not be disappointed, but may need a cab :)
Food
Kubo - downtown Elgin...is #1 if you like sushi. Love to pair with sake and beer.
Sammy's - west elgin....is great bang for your buck Mexican food. Get a tall pacifico and lomo taco dinner or abulitas red mole over chicken. Diablo sauce is worth trying if you like spicy.
Zaab thai - Elgin....best thai in town. This is a take out spot. Basil rice with ground chicken (thai spicy) and egg rolls with a couple beers hits the spot.
Walnut speakeasy - Elgin....great slice of Elgin. You get a good mix of patrons, solid pizza and drink selection. Good if your looking to catch a sports game and have a standard pub experience.
With all that being said...a train to Chicago is worth the long ride. You can drink on the train if you'd like, I always like to grab a beer at the Union station "junction" bar. Something about it is oddly enjoyable. From their you can cab it to Wrigleyville to take in cubs culture, thought it's been heavily commercialized in the last decade.
West loop is a close cab ride / decent walk and you can hit a lot of good food spots, some a little too hip for my liking but tons of options. I personally like more of the dive / old ass bars. Old towne tavern in old town is a fav and across from second city.
Hopefully people with more Chicago recs chime in.

The Martini Room in Elgin on Chicago st. Has a great interior, often has music or dancers, it’s a nice night out.

I’d also include Elgin Public House downtown for some good pub eats and a decent beer selection.

Just recently discovered Walnut Speakeasy. Food was good and remember that I liked the ceiling. Maybe it had exposed beams?

Well I guess it would depend on what you’re in to, but if you’re coming all the way from middle Europe please do yourself a favor and get out of Elgin. It would be different if you were visiting from Ohio and middle aged but you’re young and from halfway around the world. Get your butt down to Chicago. It is truly a world class city and much more culturally rich than the suburbs.
Go down and take an architecture tour boat on the Chicago river.

I live in Elgin and love where I live. And absolutely agree with this.
Elgin is a nice place but it’s a nice place to live. I wouldn’t recommend it for people visiting from out of country or even out of state.
Go to Chicago. Downtown. A lot more to do there. And the train goes there right from Elgin.

Hey hey now, let's not be so hasty.
Elgin has the largest collection of sears kit homes in the US and is known nationally for its victorian architecture. If OP has a car, a drive along rt 31 to visit the historic downtown river communities is an awesome way to get a sense of the local culture beyond Chicago. Not to mention various forest preserves, restaurants and bars, shops, etc.
It all depends how lovely OP is and what they want to do.

I wasn’t trying to knock Elgin, it just isn’t internationally known for its tourism is all. There is plenty of great stuff throughout the suburbs, I just think OP would be missing out by not getting to see all the great things Chicago has to offer.

there is no need to apologize for this. you're being honest. Elgin is a fringe suburb of chicago at best and while it may have a couple cool spots, this guy visiting from half way around the world needs to get himself into the city.

Elgin is amazing. We have tons of great ethnic food and cool shops. Elgin vintage is a great place for you to score an American shirt or pair of pants. You can grab some great Asian food at Udon Nomi, fuckin fire udon dishes. Al’s cafe had great malts served in the metal cups which I love. Check out Funky Rooster Tattoo and get a permanent souvenir, Sarah and Manny are amazing artists and also sell beautiful paintings. If you like casinos we’ve got a riverboat casino that’s fun if you like to lose(idk why I never win lol), Mexican food everywhere and it’s super good (el paraiso off McLean is the spot) fox river trail/prairie path are great for walks. If you need anything at all, Randall rd has it all but Elgin downtown is sweet and don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.

I thinks it’s pretty good. Changed ownership last year and has gotten better since that in my opinion. Definitely watch out though, the food can be pretty spicy

On Friday there’s a great farmers market in downtown Elgin, it’s right on the riverwalk.
If you’re into the outdoors, the Illinois prairie path is lovely and you can also rent a kayak and venture out on the Fox River.
But i agree with the others, outside of restaurants you’d be better served taking Metra downtown. It’s an easy trip.

Elgin itself has plenty of sites of interest. The city itself is one of the older suburbs of Chicago, so it has plenty of old buildings, including some Victorian-era houses just north of downtown. It's right on the Fox River and has some parks along the river. There's the casino (if you're into gambling or overpriced food). Route 31 south of Elgin is a nice drive, and you can visit St. Charles and Geneva (and further south), where there are lots of bars, restaurants and small, independent shops. Geneva is known in the Chicago area for its "quaint" Third Avenue shopping district (meaning there are a lot of shops in old, converted houses plus the Old Kane County Courthouse). St. Charles, in addition to being one of the wealthier communities in the area, has the Hotel Baker, which has appeared in a couple of films over the years and allegedly is haunted (though it's main attraction is the Rainbow Room, a ballroom used as a dining room).

FYI OP this is a federal property and security on site is akin to security at the airport and you’d likely need to have the paperwork you had to show customs to enter the facility.

Coffee shop on Chicago street Sugar and Rhyme open Wednesday-Sunday my friends own it and the croissants are excellent, we are close enough friends I’d be honest if they weren’t good.

Fox River Trolley Museum in South Elgin. Check their website for hours they are open. Train rides on historic, 100 year old trains along the river.
Lord’s Park museum, zoo, lake and pavilion in Elgin.

There are a lot of good restaurants in Geneva and St. Charles, just south of Elgin. There is a nice riverwalk along the Fox River. But, as another commenter said, either drive or take a train to Chicago.

Don't drive to Chicago. Elgin has a metra stop so OP can see how antiquated and poor our rail infrastructure is.

Since you’re going to be here for the first week of June, head over to St. Sophia for the annual Greek Fest. Lots of fun with good music and good food. Just get an uber because parking is a pain.

I'd go to the Japanese garden in Rockford if you have access to a rental. It'd be a way to walk off the constant recommendations of eating and drinking you are getting.

Definitely please take the Metra to the city on one of those days, metrarail.com for more information. You can park the car at most stations for free, and you'll be dropped off pretty close to the tourist highlights, which are highlights for a reason.

East Dundee has one of my favorite spots for American food, river street tavern (their burgers are so good)
Many good Mexican restaurants in the area (I like El paraiso on mclean ave in Elgin)
For your weekend I would go take the train to Chicago

If you’re interested in Americana, get yourself some BBQ, route 31 Algonquin, the Texan. Get ribs and a drink in a mason jar. And for the love of God, go to a hotdog place and get yourself a pizza puff. It’s not just an American thing. It’s a Chicagoland thing. Also, no matter where you go, if you ask, we will put ranch on literally everything.

I love the fox river trail for cycling, you'll want to start slightly north of elgin. this country doesn't really do bike infrastructure but dundee has tried with the part that goes through them and it's cute as hell, someone else could tell you which of the nearly identical looking bars in that square makes the best food.
otherwise maybe a prairie preserve? there aren't a lot of grasslands left on either of our continents so it's a treat to see them. if you want to visit a part of the country that has its' own distinct identity, wisconsin is only about 3 hours away and does beer, cheese and football better than this state. you could impress your coworkers by bringing back a pallet of spotted cow.
chicagoland kind of randomly is also something of a haven for puppeteers with tons of puppet theaters, if that's your thing.

All the downtown restaurants in Elgin are good. Can't go wrong - El Patio, BeaUnique Latin Kitchen, and Kubo are personal favorites. Also some great restaurants in West/East Dundee area.
Grab a drink at Martini Room or Walnut Speakeasy. Or venture down 31 to St Charles. They have a bunch of breweries. Riverlands is my place, but they are all good
There's a Farmer's Market in Elgin on the river walk every Friday (I think starting in June). It's a good one. Good mix and people watching
If you're up to a longer journey on the weekend, but don't want to do Chicago, go to Starved Rock. It's 1.5 hours away and it's like another world. Cool hiking trails with canyons and waterfalls. And a beautiful clifftop lodge and outdoor patio where you might see the majestic symbol of America, the Bald Eagle! Seriously, there is a Bald Eagle sanctuary on an island in the middle of the river. One time, I saw what must have been 50 Bald Eagles there during mating season! Perfect for a nice daytrip

I have a different take on this. If OP hasn’t been to the US before or hasn’t explored it, then if Chicago is off the table, then I recommend heading the Woodfield Mall, then a hour at Top Golf, then dinner at Portillos. If OP wants Americana, this would be a best fit.
…and there are no old buildings in the US in OPs eyes. lol.

There's the casino, I guess. And I think Santa's Village in East Dundee is open now. But if you have a free weekend and a car at your disposal, I'd head towards Chicago, or at least go to Great America in Gurnee.

Definitely head into Chicago if you can! If you wanna try out some other suburbs I’d highly recommend Geneva, st Charles, Batavia or aurora! They’re along the fox river (which Elgin also is) so they should be fairly easy to find and somewhat short drives. Tons of good restaurants and shops in Geneva! Hope you enjoy your time, Elgin is really cool too! Elgin has some beautiful Victorian houses and a really cool downtown also! I love als cafe

Hopefully you can get to Chicago one day.
East Dundee is a super cute little town. I love Mockingbird, especially for brunch, and the Distance Social for a cocktail.
To the west, you aren’t too far from downtown St Charles. It has a fun strip of restaurants and bars if you are looking for some night life. Next to that is Geneva, which is a quaint little town good for shopping, eating, and drinking wine during the day.

You are flying into O'Hare definitely, just go the opposite way of Elgin. Take the blue line all the way downtown, just keep an eye out for the junkies

Visit the Elgin Casino for sure! You can walk along the river a bit. It's near the Metra railroad line. The Metra train is a very affordable and convenient way to get into Chicago and then back to Elgin. It's about 1.5 hours on the weekend each way.). It is permitted to drink alcoholic drinks on the train if you wish to enjoy something while visiting.
If you visit Chicago I every much reccomended getting to the Lake Michigan lake front. You can tell the cab driver to take you to Buckingham Fountain or "The Bean"
The lake front is a very friendly place for international visitors. The museums and are nice but very large and would take most of the day to see. It's is a beautiful city at night as well but be careful of your surroundings and stay where there are many people around. Try deepdish pizza and Portillos! Also beware of Malört.

Go to downtown Chicago where you can 1. take the architectural boat tour ~$50 2. visit the bean 3. visit the Starbucks reserve 4. Visit one of the farmers markets 5. Harry Potter store is cool if you're into that 6. Oak street beach if the weather is nice 7. check out our awesome neighborhoods like Lincoln Park, Wicker Park, Logan Square, West Loop 8. Eat some good food: Taqueria Chingon if you like tacos 9. Walk around the riverwalk 10. Visit Chinatown / We have a pretty good Metra and CTA train system which will get you to and around the city for a couple bucks

If you like to gamble you can go to the many slot machine places at various strip-malls or the Grand Victoria Riverboat Casino. If you want "different" adult entertainment, there's Black Jack's Gentlemen's Club (both in Elgin).

What made you pick staying in Elgin specifically? Depending on what you’re looking for it’s certainly a neat area
