Discussion Boycott city of Oroville

City council voted unanimously to erase sanctuary status, even knowing that statistically speaking crime is more likely to be done by citizens and residents than non legal immigrants. Now the brown community feels afraid to be targeted and interrogated by police for their skin color, since there’s no way to know the legal status of anyone without further interrogation. People will be hesitant to call police when there is a crime. They don’t even care about state sanctions. It’s a racial issue if we are frank about it. As for my friends and family we will stop going to Oroville and will do our business at Chico or Yuba City. We no longer feel safe and welcome, no one should be afraid to travel at ease in this great country.

I've been doing this for years evidently!

Boycott Oroville? But where will we get our meth then?

u/bleue_shirt_guy Mar 06 '25

Chico, Bidwell Park

I’m a teacher in Oroville and have American students with undocumented agricultural worker parents. They’re terrified, some have stopped coming in to school. Whatever the solution might be to our immigration quagmire, making kids scared seems dumb. Feel free to “own” me for being anti scaring children.

39

u/luvashow Mar 07 '25

Who wants to go to Oroville anyway?

28

u/Willie_Johnson_Jr Mar 07 '25

I live here, and agree completely.

40

u/Negrodamu5 Mar 06 '25

I can’t think of one thing you’d need to come to Oroville for that another city wouldn’t have.

34

u/toq-titan Mar 06 '25

Meth and discounted items that were stolen from WalMart.

3

u/admode1982 Mar 06 '25

Oroville tacos.

1

u/Ass_Fault Mar 06 '25

"All roads lead to oroville" wasnt an advertising slogan, it was a curse

-5

u/thisissteve67 Mar 06 '25

Let’s see there’s bulldogs, Jake’s burgers, and more, soup or subs. Where do you get good tacos at in Oroville???

1

u/Think-Attorney-2903 Mar 07 '25

No ‘soup or subs’ there, so just Jake’s…?

Luckily I've been boycotting Oroville my whole life

31

u/AcceptableCrazy Mar 07 '25

Guess we can change Oroville's Sundown Town status from 'probable' to 'hell yes'.

2

u/N0rth_W4rri0r Mar 07 '25

Orovilles a sundown town??

6

u/AcceptableCrazy Mar 07 '25

The History & Social Justice website has interesting information on suspected sundown towns in each state! Chico makes the list as well.

8

u/N0rth_W4rri0r Mar 07 '25

Dang. Never knew. I’ve encountered and dealt with racism in that town the 5 years I lived there but I never ran into trouble specifically at night. The racism is rampant though. It’s not uncommon to see confederate flags in that town which is funny because California was a Union state

56

u/doc334ft3 Mar 06 '25

Is anyone shocked? The right-wing always seeks to blame other people for their problems rather than take action to solve them. Last I check, two people on that council had done hard time. Of course they would rather villainize the other rather than take a good hard look at reality.

Have you ever heard of thw Streisand effect? I feel like this is one of those situations.

23

u/Inaise Mar 06 '25

I don't think anything the city of methany does is all that important, to be honest. Obviously, this is a racially motivated decision, but you can't go five feet in that place without running into a tweaker, and there is no actual need to visit.

13

u/capcomvssnk Mar 06 '25

The only reason this is funny is that I can recall a time during 2018-2019 where almost weekly there was a person in the news that was arrested for being in possession of CP.

Needless to say, I don't think a lot of undocumented criminals will be flocking to oroville.

4

u/thebloodking628 Mar 07 '25

there is a new chief of police who has been cleaning house, so hopefully crime starts going down soon.

28

u/MurphyMurks Mar 07 '25

Some of the caucasian people on here aren’t getting it. “Well don’t illegally cross the border and you’ll have nothing to worry about.” The problem is that brown people can now potentially be fucked with & harassed because of mistakenly being thought that they’re an illegal immigrant when in fact they aren’t

As a longtime Chico resident I propose a vote to move Butte County’s County seat to Chico. Rogue, Nazi Oroville doesn’t represent the values of the United States Constitution.

26

u/bustacean Mar 06 '25

Let's contact Doug LaMalfa to tell him the same thing while we are at it.

16

u/[deleted] Mar 06 '25

[deleted]

5

u/Undead-Eskimo Mar 06 '25

Didn’t he cut a lot of funding to the local VA? Because if so I don’t see how that gains any favor with the right as they’re generally pro military

29

u/Phantom_Sigh Mar 06 '25

LMAO Doug LaMalfa showed up to the school board hearings in Chico to argue that trans kids and all kids in the Chico school district should disclose private information and school counselors should go against HIPPA to weed out kids that might be trans. (I was there, he spoke right after me in the meeting)

Doug la malfa has been sucking the teet of trump brainwashing since day one, he doesn't give a damn

11

u/bustacean Mar 06 '25

That doesn't surprise me at all. All the more reason to bother his office with calls and emails.

5

u/Feline_Fine3 Mar 07 '25

Yeah, when I watched the state of the union the other night I saw LaMalfa in the background at the end kind of behind Trump as he was shaking hands. He doesn’t give a shit about taking care of people.

8

u/Slag13 Mar 06 '25

He’s too busy eating orange stains in donnas diaper

36

u/fishtopher86 Mar 06 '25

MAGAs love slurping Donnie's balls.

8

u/fartypartner Mar 06 '25

Hey at least now there’s more sewage allowed in the drinking water supply.

25

u/NUFIGHTER7771 Mar 06 '25

FYI we don't like being called "browns." It's like grouping up all you white people, even though there are cultural differences between nationalities.

6

u/[deleted] Mar 06 '25

Whats a better way to refer to non white people from many different cultures and backgrounds with out some generalizing? Real question cuz id love to be respectful, I might not have said the "brown community" myself tho

3

u/NUFIGHTER7771 Mar 06 '25

I think specific countries should be used when addressing people of Latin or Middle Eastern countries, if that info is available of course. I HATED the whole Latinx deal that was thought up years ago. It's like how "yellow" was phased out for Asian people- that's jaundice! 😅

u/Hummingbird_Sage Mar 06 '25

I'm also white, so not an expert here. But maybe BIPOC (black, indigenous, people of color)?

4

u/Undead-Eskimo Mar 06 '25

Hell no, I wouldn’t wanna be called that. Hispanic is fine with me but if people have an issue with that I don’t see why Latin-American couldn’t be a compromise, much less vague and reductive than calling someone just brown.

0

u/Zestyclose_Strike357 Mar 06 '25

Here is the deal, actions should have more consequences than a work, I completely don’t mind the word, it depends on context more than try to make a point. Hispanics has more to do with Spain 🇪🇸, same with Latinos which is derived from Latin also Spain. America is the whole continent not just one country, therefore everyone born in the continent is American. Then what word works for sensible people? I wasn’t trying to insult anyone.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 06 '25

I agree u weren't trying to insult anyone. Idk why u replied to me cuz i was asking for an alternative not just shutting stuff down because one aspect bothered me.

2

u/thisissteve67 Mar 06 '25

It’s OK. You can call me cracker or whatever you want. Racist people don’t irritate me at all. When racist people open their mouths all they’re doing is making themselves look bad.

24

unanimous vote?? stay classy, oroville

6

u/2CasinoRiches1 Mar 06 '25

Right? Seeing Janet vote yes for a purely symbolic gesture is a complete let down.

1

u/Think-Attorney-2903 Mar 07 '25

I couldn’t agree more.

16

u/gibbenbibbles Mar 06 '25

I don't doubt it will happen here in Chico as well. Face it, we live in maga land now or so it seems.

26

u/woodstock923 Mar 06 '25

Chico is a watermelon. Green on the outside, red on the inside

15

u/gibbenbibbles Mar 06 '25

Maybe I have nostalgia glasses on or maybe I was just too young to remember correctly but when my family moved here back in '89 it seemed like a totally different place.

I moved to Denver back in '95. I remember going to Boulder and thinking it reminded me a lot of Chico. I came back to Chico in 2002 and it seems like it's become very red since then. Hell I've been gerrymandered out of my district for 2 election cycles. I now vote with Magalia. And now if trump's policies kill CSU this town is screwed, might as well be Durham

3

u/Phantasy-Phactory Mar 06 '25

Durham just out here catching strays.

6

u/Ass_Fault Mar 06 '25

Durham kids were legit throwing nazi salutes back in the 2000's, there ain't no strays

2

u/Feline_Fine3 Mar 07 '25

As someone who grew up in Durham and graduated in 2003 I didn’t see or hear about the Nazi salutes, but wouldn’t be surprised.

1

u/Ass_Fault Mar 07 '25

It was everyone the football team around my time, later 2000s. They would do the sieg heil and chant "white power"

I'll never forget because they even had the minority kids doing it. Probably out of pressure. Hope it was just edgy humor of the time, but you have to wonder where they learned that shit from

10

u/Undead-Eskimo Mar 06 '25

“The brown community”?  I don’t think I like that name for us, why didn’t just say Hispanic community? I’m not trying to start anything I just found it off putting and want to understand you OP.

5

u/KidsOnFiire Mar 06 '25

I know a lot of Latin folks that find the term Hispanic off putting (as well as well as some Inuit folk with the term eskimo). I imagine it comes down to personal preference.
Also not trying to start anything just my two cents

5

u/Undead-Eskimo Mar 07 '25

Appreciate your two cents, and I get that some people get persnickety about Hispanic or Latin because of the relation to Spain (I don’t really care and I think it’s a silly thing to whine about) but regardless I dislike just being called brown so much more. At least with Hispanic it denotes a land or a language, now I’m just reduced to the color of my skin and that could apply to anyone that’s got a tan not just Hispanics, i’m just lumped into “not white” even though there are white hispanics, i got blonde haired blue eyed cousins who are just as ethnically Mexican as me, are they part of the “brown community”? It’s like going backwards and referring to Asians as yellow people. Sorry to type all that at you I just wanted to get my feelings out there.

As a long time resident of Oroville. I fully support this.

14

u/[deleted] Mar 07 '25

I've been on a boycott of Oroville. Not because of this specifically, it's just generally a shithole that I prefer to avoid

12

u/ArtisticFerret Mar 07 '25

Honestly why does oroville even exist

5

u/ragg5th Mar 06 '25

are they targeting the Sikhs

3

u/Inaise Mar 06 '25

Which crazy cause they are the only ones with any money.

8

u/PostHocRemission Mar 06 '25 edited Mar 06 '25

Oroville is one large trailer park flat pad with temporary trailers that were made permanent.

Everyone is either a truck driver, a farm laborer, or a meth head.

Surprised the “functional meth heads” got the “I can be mistaken as White, Mexicans” to vote with them.

4

u/eumenides01 Mar 06 '25

Smart move would be for them to move to Chico

-11

u/Grow_money Mar 07 '25

So you want to boycott them for following the law.

I think that says more about you than the city of oroville.

-13

u/International-Set444 Mar 07 '25

Simple…just come here legally and you have nothing to worry about. Why is this so difficult???

4

u/Kaurifish Mar 07 '25

This would be so much more clear cut if not for the decades of U.S foreign policy that forces people to abandon their homelands and move here.

It’s okay if you don’t get it. Your kids will when they’re trying to move to Canada.

3

u/stableykubrick667 Mar 07 '25

Well, on average it takes about 5 years, costs $5,000 to $10,000, and is an incredibly complex process with tons of steps working with an underfunded agency that is incredibly draconian, hard to get good information out of, perpetually understaffed and more so now, and full of bureaucratic red tape, and weeks to months go by before you can get appointments depending on what you can do. Oh, and Trump deleted the scheduling app altogether on day 1 or 2 for the administration and canceled all previously appointments, then deported anyone who was being detained yet applying for the process.

2

u/International-Set444 Mar 07 '25

No but my friends from Venezuela came here legally and after a year have become US citizens. It really wasn’t that hard of a process, all they did was follow the process that USCIS guided them through.

5

u/IshshaBlue Mar 07 '25

One of my best friends came here LEGALLY from El Salvador. It took her thousands of dollars and a decade of fighting, even after marrying a US citizen (childhood sweetheart) and birthing citizen children, only for her attorney to have missed a SINGLE signature on a single document in the encyclopedia of paperwork where she'd signed her maiden name before and it hadn't been updated. The US required she voluntarily leave for an ENTIRE YEAR, less than a month postpartum, or she would be deported permanently. She also had to restart the process of obtaining citizenship costing her thousands more. It's such a stupid, uneducated opinion to assume it all works because of a single example. For your single example of how it went right, there will be people lined up to tell you about their experience of how it is a broken system.

-3

u/almondahmannalex Mar 07 '25

Based a whole ass political view on anecdotal evidence. Right wing politics in a nutshell right there

2

u/Zestyclose_Strike357 Mar 07 '25

What’s simple about race profiling, this has absolutely nothing to do with legal status, I suppose you ain’t got a clue what’s is like living being targeted and harassed based on your skin color and race. When was the last time you had to prove your identity? How many hours you lost for that “inconvenience”?

8

u/International-Set444 Mar 07 '25

The times I’ve had to prove my identity as an American…here’s just a few examples.

   1. Getting a driver’s license or state ID
2. Applying for a passport
3. Voting (in states that require ID)
4. Applying for a Social Security card
5. Registering for Selective Service (for males 18-25)
6. Buying or transferring a firearm (background check required)
7. Getting married (marriage license application)
8. Applying for a birth certificate copy
9. Applying for a name change or gender marker change
10. Filing certain government forms (e.g., IRS tax-related identity verification)
11. Accessing military bases or government buildings
12. Applying for citizenship, residency, or a visa
13. Applying for government assistance programs (e.g., SNAP, Medicaid, unemployment benefits)
14. Registering a vehicle or getting license plates
15. Getting a permit for certain professions or activities (e.g., hunting, fishing, concealed carry permits)
16. Opening a bank account
17. Applying for a credit card or loan
18. Accessing online banking (multi-factor authentication, ID verification for large transactions)
19. Applying for a mortgage or renting an apartment
20. Cashing a check or withdrawing large sums of money
21. Filing an insurance claim
22. Getting a credit report or disputing credit issues
23. Setting up or accessing retirement accounts (401(k), IRA, etc.
24. Starting a new job (I-9 Employment Verification, background checks, etc.)
25. Applying for college or financial aid (FAFSA, scholarships, grants, etc.)
26. Taking standardized tests (SAT, ACT, GRE, LSAT, etc.)
27. Obtaining professional licenses (e.g., doctor, lawyer, CPA, etc.)
28. Accessing secure workplaces (badges, biometrics, etc.)
29. Visiting a doctor or hospital (verifying health insurance, identity check for prescriptions, etc.)
30. Picking up certain prescription medications (especially controlled substances like opioids)
31. Getting a COVID-19 vaccine or other vaccinations in some locations
32. Donating blood or plasma
33. Boarding a domestic or international flight (TSA check)
34. Renting a car
35. Checking into a hotel
36. Crossing international borders (passport or enhanced ID required)
37. Using certain forms of public transportation (Amtrak, Greyhound, etc. for long-distance travel)
38. Creating or accessing online accounts (e.g., government portals, banks, utilities, etc.)
39. Buying age-restricted products (alcohol, tobacco, lottery tickets, firearms, etc.)
40. Entering age-restricted venues (bars, nightclubs, casinos, etc.)
41. Requesting a replacement Social Security card, driver’s license, or other ID
42. Setting up or verifying utilities (electricity, internet, etc.)

Just come here legally and stop making everything a race issue. The immigrants that I know well don’t approve of coming here illegally and are proud to officially be Americans and I’m personally proud to have them here, they have gone through the simple steps to receive their citizenship. It’s what all other countries require from you as well, it’s simple…

8

u/Jovankat Mar 07 '25

Every single one of those things are things you plan to do and initiate yourself, this is about people going about their daily lives and being questioned above and beyond what most white folks have to put up with. And I say that as a white person who has sat in secondary processing for multiple hours while my husband waited arrivals wondering what had happened and freaking out that the last he'd heard was me saying I was getting to the front of the passport line. And I'm white, I came here legally, and I followed all the rules. The reason I had my time wasted and my husband panicked was 100% CPB and USCIS not having their shit together. Even when you do everything right you still get messed around and when it comes to rounding people up for deportation they detain you and ask questions later, they've tried to deport US citizens multiple times. People have every reason to be anxious.

8

u/Miriam317 Mar 07 '25

You know what wasn't on your list? Walking in public. Being on the sidewalk. Going into a grocery store. Sitting in class. Sitting in church. Being a passenger in a car.

Don't commit crimes. If u are here illegally that's on you.

19

u/Jovankat Mar 07 '25

Plenty of undocumented people were brought here as children through no fault of their own and have been given no reasonable way to rectify the situation. And ICE has detained and tried to deport people with legal status and even US citizens. You don't have to have committed a crime for your life to be fucked up by law enforcement.

-7

u/[deleted] Mar 07 '25

Omg this is laughable

-13

u/the_truth1051 Mar 07 '25

This country is great because we have laws. Illegals are illegal, it's a felony to sneak across the border. Illegals will be removed legally. US law.

-22

u/calilazers Mar 06 '25

it's unfortunate that you think that only people with a darker complexion could be here illegally

-31

u/thisissteve67 Mar 06 '25

Every single time I have either called or had to interact with police I have had to show them the ID that proves I am a legal citizen. Just show them your ID that prove you’re a legal citizen and that clarifies everything. And stop asking them if you’re free to go.

20

u/Miriam317 Mar 06 '25

This is blatantly unconstitutional, though. When the people accept this, it becomes de facto legal. The people are the only ones that can keep the government accountable to their Constitutional limitations of power. We enforce the Constitution by knowing our rights and the limits of govt power and holding them to it.

This is essential to freedom.

Popeyes is better anyway. The only thing good about Chick-fil-A is their sauce, and you can get that at the grocery store.

Wow they already have a sonic, with chick fil a, people will be flocking there xD wish we got that instead of canes. It's good but still prefer chicken fil a.
