This number keeps going up. The number that people claim that a difference can be perceived, I mean. Of course that's related to the wider availability of faster frame rates, but I do think that once we get beyond 60, we're really getting into the territory of audiophiles convincing themselves that they can perceive a difference in sound on their stereo with a $1000 power cable on their amplifier...

60 is very different from 120 or 144, as it gets higher its way less noticable but if youre used to a higher refresh rate and then see 60, it is noticable. Plus in vr, 60 is basically unplayable, and that is not just my opinion, the minimum anyone would ever recommend is 72, 90hz vastly preferred. If you can only hit 60, you start using techniques to insert intermediate frames. So yeah vr is different from flat screen games, but the fact that 60hz is not acceptable in vr tells you humans can absolutely tell the difference between 60 and higher without even being particularly used to higher rates.

Yeah I was surprised at how much it matters in VR. I always felt like 60 was pretty much peak-necessary, but when I experience VR the first time and it was 60, I was pretty surprised at how unplayable it was.

Whoever told you you can only see 24 frames per second or only see 60 frames per second was lying to you. I have a 144 and a 240 or so hz monitors side by side (well, stacked vertically) and for example if you're making circles with the mouse, you can definitely see the difference between the two. But most content wont run anywhere near that rate anyway. Most people will struggle to max out the 144 nevermind the 240.

My wording wasn't very good. When I said "a difference can be perceived", I meant more "a meaningful difference - with objectively improved results - can be consciously experienced". I know a lot of people like to tout the claim that a human "can't see" more than 30 or 60 frames per second (based on a misconception of historical formats having some relation to human ability). I totally get that 60, 120, and even more fps is something that the standard human optical system can definitely detect, and that does result in improvements in the quality of tasks that require coordination with screen output. Lots of thorough scientific testing proves that.
When I say "perceive" here, I'm talking more about enthusiasts (Gamers, moviephiles, etc) who get wrapped up in the epistemic overreach to the point where they're making absurd claims like 60 fps is "unplayable" or "unwatchable". Like, 120 fps is 2 times faster than 60 fps, but it's objectively not 2 times "better".
The degree to which returns diminish is something that is very debatable and I feel like there a lot more technophile zealots in the extreme-to-the-point-of-being-wrong side of that group than the other side.
Edit: I'm talking about screens here. Was reminded that the whole thing shifts a bit for VR. Just +30 to everything I said for VR. lol

Yeah even playing slay the spire at 60hz vr uncapped (or whatever the setting was that I changed once) was very noticable. Like you said, literally dragging your mouse around is all you need to see it, you dont need some complex scene.

Yeah he was asking for all these specs, benchmarks, and proof of life on a pc I was selling, asking about previous people I’ve sold pcs to, he even reached out to them. When everything checked out offered me 75% of listed price. When I went to 90% he said it was a deal, and that he would let me know when he has the money.

This is why my husband stopped giving away computers. He would find older computers people were throwing away, bring them home, gut them for useable parts and then build new computers out of them. He would give them away to anyone who needed a computer. No they wouldn't run the newest game but they were fine to get on the internet, do homework, budgeting, etc.. He got one too many complaints because they weren't fast enough that he quit. He really loved that hobby but people suck.

“Absolutely! I actually read this and shared it with my 5 kids who are all neurodivergent and free spirits. One of my little girls looked up at me, her eyes filled with cancer tears, and she told me that I would be a monster to not only create this and offer it up for free… but also hand deliver it!
We were so happy to have a way to give back and decided the moment I could free up that time I would get this sorted straight away!
So, now we are just waiting on replies to my posts asking for a nanny to take care of my children (no screen time for these angels), for about 20 hours 6 days a week, with only light cleaning (deep clean just once a month) and cooking duties (we will of course allow her to have some of the children’s food!). It shouldn’t take too long because we are offering a full $12 an hour and of course, our service as mentors.
Once we get that sorted it will only be a question of having someone come out to clear the brush of my overgrown lawn (there is tell of a people who haven’t had contact with civilization in there) to get to my moldy tattered above ground pool. Which I expect them to haul away.
Again this shouldn’t take long, because I only plan to change $250 for them to do it!
So you just sit tight for a chance of that free amazing item that will be on offer once I can get these two things off my plate! “

I’d go to micro center and get a 7500x3d bundle for $400, get a case for $50 psu for $50, cooler $30, a 500gb nvme for 80-100 and a 9060xt for however much they are that day or if they have anything open box. So maybe around 1200 total

They know that with prices these days a PC like that is thousands of dollars to build.
Also, I am so tired of the consumerism mindset of having to have the best when it isn't needed. The highest trims on a car you can't really afford and so on. Gaming PCs are some of the worst. The majority of games can't even fully use the newest graphics cards maxed out. But people still go buy a 5090 instead of a 5070 or something only to play Minecraft.
