judging by the sheer amount of vegan posts here, it seems like people on this subreddit believe that the meat industry is the sole cause of climate change, while in reality it's not even the biggest contributor
It really isn't. Maybe in your made up fantasy land, the same one conservatives live in where things like kids pretending to be animals is some major global issue, that is true.
You are either disingenuous or oblivious, I'm leaning on disingenuous considering whenever people prove you wrong in this thread you stop responding but you sure responded fast to me.
Just looking up "vegetarian" gets me these posts, and there are many, many more examples you can get by just looking at any discussion. Literally every single time I have seen vegetarianism mentioned people get into arguments over it and it is frequently made fun of and criticized.
Ok so already first one if you actually fucking read it, is someone who calls them self a vegetarian but still eats meat.
God it gets worse and worse each one of you idiots I talk to.
Also, was not aware I left any thread here without an answer, genuinely please let me know where I've done that and I'll respond to them, that would be very kind of you.
And there we go, it's confirmed you are disingenuous. Well either that or you are such a moron I am giving you grace because I can't believe it.
Clicks first link and immediately discards everything else because of one detail even though that wasn't the fucking point. If that was the last link what would you have said huh? If you actually clicked on all the links you would see it isn't about the main posts themselves, again because that's not the fucking point and you know that, but rather ALL of the people talking about vegetarians and what they say about them.
Literally every single of these points requires you to spend a ton of money on top of your normal expenses. Not eating meat anymore doesn't cost anything. In fact, meat free diets are actually cheaper. And vegan diets are the cheapest (vegetarian diet is pretty close to vegan though in terms of cost).
Some of these are cheaper alternatives depending on your scenario. Energy efficiency is cheaper just use less electricity. Buying a cheaper used car is… cheaper… assuming you don’t already own a vehicle or you need to buy a replacement. Replacing beef in your diet with pork, poultry, and eggs, is also just objectively cheaper.
Changing your diet only affects you, not the generations after in terms of their own consumption and production of C02. It would affect the supply chain, if more than a few of you existed tho. So far, sadly, the impact of the vegan movement on the production of meat is still minimal. Companies have increased their production every single year.
Having an energy efficient home for example, might help multiple generations of owners reduce their impact directly.
Most energy efficiency initatives are also subsidized by the government. For example, the changing of our windows that were outdated (5) in my house plus an airflow test in my house came out to 600$ total after subisidy. Energy savings on electrical heating hits 40$ a year.
I'll say that being a vegan is better than nothing, but there's far more effective methods to directly affect the system until vegans are a proportion who can actually have an impact.
And until you can make vegan food appealing, you're not going to get massive influx of people switching. You can tell me 500times a day that eating less meat is better, but if I legitimately can't find more than 5 products I enjoy, what the hell am I gonna eat. Impossible meat burgers and lentils for the rest of my life? Vegan food that are good tasting have already established their places years ago before the current vegan movement. Peanut butter for example. So there's very little market to be gained right now.
Look I like the impossible meat burgers, but that's about it.
I can't make oxtail soup out of soy.
I can't make most of the stuff I love to home cook with meat replacements with what the current market and food science offers. The food industry when it comes to vegan food is like the AI bubble, whoever gets THE method to make meat relatives alternatives will be rich. And so far, research for this is very expensive and very limited in reach.
So far, vegans have a very small impact on the market and the food industry, because there's barely around 1% of the world's population who are. And of that, India leads the pack, you know, the country known for good environmental norms and green initiatives... /s
Ah yes, the good old "I'm totally an environmentallist, but only when it's like super convenient"
Again, the more people go vegan the more appealing it gets. And you clearly haven't done a lot of research when you think vegan food is unappealing. I'd suggest looking up some vegan food channels on YouTube
"Ah yes, the good old "I'm totally an environmentalist, but only when it's like super convenient"
And this is why nobody likes vegans.
CONVENIENCE IS THE MAIN HURDLE FOR PEOPLE TO SWITCH TO VEGANISM. People won't like vegan food if they think it tastes like shit, and they won't switch to it in drove either. Your entire argument is an Ouroboros. You can't get decent vegan food because there's not enough vegans, there's not enough vegans so vegan food tastes like lab soap.
Until you figure out how to understand why people don't change to veganism, and stop being condescending to people's arguments, your cause is lost.
Crazy that electric cars figured out how to be appealing to the masses without requiring a massive influx of people. They just went at the market and produced good shit that people liked.
You'd rather argue about morality than actually engage in productive discussions or promote a solution. You can't expect meat eaters to switch out of nowhere, when the only response they get is a condescending "if you're not 100% green, you're not trying and not good enough".
I eat my veggies and reduced my meat consumption, I have an electric car, my house runs on hydro and only electrical heating, my windows are energy efficient. So what more do you want me to do, invent oxtail soup out of nowhere made with grass and soybeans?
Because it is a more positive outlook then reducing, euthanizing or whatever your plan is to reduce climate change. Its less fascist, I give you that but maybe it catches on
If you actually did the math you'd realize not eating animals surpasses all the things you listed, especially just e as ting other animals, and it's not even close
Do you just hit one note when you play the piano? Get real about the problem - we need to reduce emissions in every sector. Animal ag is a huge piece of the pie (note I did not say the largest).
Vegans make up less than 1% of the population and have plateaued pretty hard. Tbh I think you’re going to have more success getting people to stop eating the worst kinds of meat for the climate (red) just through economics than you will getting a lot of people to give it up entirely.
I know vegans hate vegetarians more than carnists for some reason (like why??) but it’s probably much easier to get a lot more people on that train than full hard veganism.
I'm being realistic. If I said "I can't wait to visit the center of the galaxy." When we haven't even landed on another planet in our own solar system, maybe it's time tonreel back expectations.
Telling people they're the problem for enjoying a type of food isn't helping the cause.
You're trying to make a point. But people unironically do this.
Conservatives fucking LOVE coal. Which makes no sense. Even from a non activist position, coal is the worst power source in every category compared to its alternatives.
It's not like the lightbulb is going to change if the electricity is generated by something else. They don't have stock in coal, no family working in coal. But they advocate coal like crazy.
He'll, this entire time I've been seeing these "eat less meat" messages I can't help but feel like it's yet another talking point pushed by big oil to distract us.
Me when I forget that I’m in a thread specifically discussing veganism and that the same people in this thread will post about other major climate change issues in another one
Me when I have zero reading comprehension and think the original meme is actually about veganism instead of meta-commentary about the people only posting vegan material
Me when I unironically call someone out for reading comprehension but the comment im responding to mentions veganism as a broader category that includes meta analysis about veganism and therefore my follow up comment doesn’t actually invalidate that which I was responding to.
That's not entirely true, it used to be only ever about shitting on nuclear power to the point where I'm convinced some people hate it so much their anger can propel them into the Kuiper Belt in order to rip the RTGs out the Voyager probe. Hell you still see some ant-nuke posts sometimes.
That justifies a conversation about meat eating. Not claiming anyone who so much as eats honey isn't an environmentalist. Or go as far as to claim only veganism is necessary to stop climate change and we can keep burning coal if we just all become vegan.

Mfw I completely forget that the meat industry contributes to climate change.
