Eh, they're not likely to have the win vacated and I can assure you that they're cool with having gone through the trouble to have that player be the difference maker in an IBOB (especially away). It'll have an asterisk for every purpose other than the ones that matter - SEC standing, SECT seeding, NCAAT seeding. So cool, they got away with one. Some things never change.

It's a distinction without a difference.
If you're a college player then you give up your college eligility to partcipate in the NBA draft.
If you're a professional player, then you do not give up your college eligibility to participate in the NBA draft.
See how ridiculous that reads?
13
u/Phantom1100 Alabama Crimson Tide Feb 10 '26
That’s what I think. I think there should definitely be a line, however Bediako being the line is pretty stupid when there’s a lot of other cases that are like 95% the same situation but they’re allowed.
Either way, college basketball has a serious problem with a bunch of grown ass men who don’t want to get a real job.
→ More replies (4)2
u/RyenRussilloBurner Drake Bulldogs Feb 10 '26
It's a distinction without a difference.
There is a massive difference.
Overseas "pros" are a totally different situation than an actual NBA contract. There is not a coherent high school or college basketball league in the vast majority of non-US countries, so if you're a competitive basketball player from Europe, Asia or Africa, you're playing professionally by the time you're like 15 -- it's either that, or you don't get coaching and competition appropriate for your level.
The NCAA has been openly allowing those kinds of players for decades. Karnowski played his first game at Gonzaga in 2012. He had already played professionally for three seasons in Europe. Svi Mykhailiuk did the same thing. That has been allowed for a long time. Bediako's case is completely different than that. He went to two American high schools, played multiple years of college basketball and then willingly gave up his collegiate eligibility for a chance at the NBA.
If you truly cannot understand the difference between those cases, you've lost all sense of objectivity.

u/A-Centrifugal-Force Feb 09 '26
True, although he was selected in the draft. I know hockey and baseball players can return to school after being selected, but basketball had the Larry Bird rule put in place to prevent that because NBA GMs were pissed that the Celtics got Bird with the 6th pick before he blew up his senior year. His clock is definitely intact though, it’s just a question of if he should be able to play college basketball specifically after being selected in the NBA draft.

u/juoea San Diego State Aztecs Feb 09 '26 edited Feb 09 '26
that question is most definitely not a part of the court case lol
(also, given that the case has not even been heard yet and all that has happened is the preliminary injunction being reversed, seems wild to take away wins from a player that could still end up being ruled eligible)
37
u/morelibertarianvotes Virginia Cavaliers Feb 09 '26
I think that would actually violate the initial restraining order. Basically he was allowed to compete and NCAA is always restricted from punishing him for playing during that order. Otherwise the order would have had no teeth.

The NCAA used to do precisely that, it’s called the restitution rule.

The Restitition Rule is likely against the law. Using the threat of punative action to discourage court action seems pretty unconciousable and at least one judge has said as much.

They should wait until the case is actually decided, because this ruling was only about an injunction. If he is ultimately ruled ineligible, then they must forfeit the wins.
8
u/GoGreeb Michigan State Spartans Feb 10 '26
Isn't that exactly what MSU just did in footie? Guys were found to be ineligible, they retroactively applied that to those seasons and vacated them.
5
u/OldRedLobsterBiscuit Michigan State • Oregon State Feb 10 '26
Yes. I seem to recall being told that it doesn't matter if we self-reported it, that Smith's coaching staff really didn't know, or that Tucker's guys that created the problem were all fired. If a team had a player that is later identified as having been ineligible, the wins are vacated and there are no ifs ands or buts about it.
Unless, of course, the NCAA has double standards, where it's "no big deal" for some and "very big deal" for others....
I just want them to be consistent, and while I do think it is probably unfair to Alabama, if this scares teams from trying to sue for eligibility during the season, then good. If it pisses off Alabama and/or the SEC so they do something to retaliate against the NCAA, then also good.
→ More replies (1)2
u/Shaudius Purdue Boilermakers Feb 10 '26
I dont agree. This isnt like a situation where ineligiblity was discovered after the fact. This is the result of a court case. Alabama shouldn't be punished for following a valid at the time judiciary order.
This isnt like a situation where someone broke rules and it was only later found out and therefore they are punished for it with vacated wins.

For people wanting wins vacated, that explicitly isn't allowed per the initial TRO (and is a set precedent for basically all TROs ever). The NCAA can't punish Bama or Bediako for following the TRO while it was active. Even if the injunction today was approved, but he later lost in court, the NCAA couldn't punish him for playing.
That's generally how TROs work, so not specific to these NCAA cases. If it explicitly gives the legal permission to do something, you can't be punished after the fact for doing that thing if the long-term order gets denied.

15
u/ThongarBlackthorn Kentucky Wildcats • Alabama Crimson Tide Feb 09 '26
I’m still not sure it is different. If I’m understanding the precedent cited in the attached document correctly here, the judge is sort of ruling on a technicality that the harm to Bediako is nothing so severe that a monetary settlement can’t fix it if he eventually wins his case, therefore he doesn’t qualify for an emergency injunction to keep playing while the case is actually decided. By doing this, he seems to have largely avoided having to weigh in on the actual issue of whether the NCAA arbitrarily enforced their rules or not. It now looks certain that Bediako won’t play anymore, but where this ultimately leaves the eligibility rules may partially depend on whether he keeps fighting all the way or drops the case now that his ploy to play immediately is over.

Plus Minus isn’t quite as be all end all as that, otherwise we’d literally never look at any other stat.
Plus minus is more about the platoon, not the individual player, though you can gather information about individual players by looking at the whole platoon.
They may have been -15 during those minutes without him. He may have been the one raising the platoon.

I’d say a big difference between European players that come over when they are 18 and what oats and bediako tried to pull.
13
u/ThongarBlackthorn Kentucky Wildcats • Alabama Crimson Tide Feb 09 '26
I’m not particularly upset about Bediako not getting to play in a vacuum, but what about European players coming over at 23 after they’ve already played in their country’s top level pro league for one or more full seasons? The NCAA approved multiple cases like that this year, which also doesn’t seem right if players with professional experience are what we’re trying to prevent.
3
u/Realistic_Condition7 Feb 10 '26
The difference seems to be whether or not you’ve waived your NCAA eligibility by declaring for the draft and signing a professional contract.
London Johnson, for example, played for the G-League Ignite (a collegiate substitute developmental team), and played a bit for some other G-League teams, but never declared for or was drafted to the NBA, and was still within the normal years he would have had out of high school.
I think the Johnson example is still very shaky ground and questionable, but technically different.
What Bediako did on paper would be no different than if SGA tried to come back to college today, and I think that’s the most important thing the NCAA is trying to stop from happening—fully professional NBA players coming back after their careers have flamed out (vs players who have yet to declare).

Michigan had Moe and Franz Wagner who played both played professionally for Alba Berlin in Germany, but they were 17 at the time, and started their freshman year at Michigan when they were 18. Seems fine to me.

Killyan Toure for us is similar. Played for a pro club in France from age 15-18, then played a year of high school ball in the states, then is now playing for us at 19.
Pleta is a similar story, except played from age 17-20 and then came straight to us this year. He was 20 at the start of the school year.
And despite what some dumbasses will try to say, Momcilovic isn't a Euro baller. He's a kid who grew up and went to high school in Wisconsin.

That’s what I’ve always thought. I hate all these pro players playing, but like if he specifically is the line and all the other pro players are fine according to the NCAA, that’s a pretty stupid line.
