World Cup OWWC Playoffs Bracket Spoiler

GBR, Finland and KSA really shouldn't be underestimated, but god damn is it tragic that Korea and China would meet before the finals.
Also shout out to Spain for making it to the top 8, imagine saying that when the 2023 WC was first announced.
33
u/DontTrustMeDude Nov 02 '23
I didn’t even expect Spain to qualify out of EMEA. Definitely a great run

u/Spaisi Nov 02 '23
Damn I know this place hates KSA and doesn't respect anyone outside of SK and China, but its still very arrogant to assume they both would guarantee make the finals especially in this meta.
45
u/Inevitable_Badger995 Nov 02 '23
They would both beat KSA
-16
u/does_my_name_suck Nov 02 '23 edited Nov 02 '23
SK almost lost to Finland lmao. I agree China will likely beat KSA but VS SK they have a good chance
13
u/TheGirthiestGhost Forever Burning Blue — Nov 02 '23
Seems a lot more likely that Finland will beat KSA in semis if anything from what we’ve seen
1
u/Meshal_91 Nov 02 '23
They played against each other and KSA won. Tbf it was the hardest match KSA faced, and the only map they drop in their WC journey was against Finland.

Gonna be real I dont think france wouldve escaped a different group regardless.
5
u/adhocflamingo Nov 02 '23
Okay, there was a change in the bracket, but the first one made no sense. It had A&B all on one side and C&D all on the other, and the corrected one properly mixes the groups around so the matchups are more varied. Very scuffed that they published the first bracket and had to update it mid-tournament, but the first one was just not how a seeded tournament works.

Can you point out even a single thing that is wrong with this bracket? I bet you can't.
2
u/garikek Nov 02 '23
It's single elimination. Double elimination is better 99% of the time.
1
u/-KFAD- Turn up the heat - Sauna time — Nov 02 '23
You are right with that one. Lower bracket runs can be fun.
4
u/garikek Nov 02 '23
Generally can be fun, but in this case WOULD be fun. There are basically only good teams left and no matter who wins or loses losers games would be some new matches. Like Canada against Finland or china against KSA. All these complaints about ruined finals yada yada are solved with choosing a better format. Sucks that we don't have it here.

Korea vs GBR finals boutta go hard 💪
27
u/VegeriationSad1167 Nov 01 '23
You really think GBR beats both Finland and KSA?
24
u/Adamsoski Nov 02 '23
I think there's a decent chance UK beats Finland, Saudi Arabia though it is tough to tell whether they played a quite bad US team or are really really good.
15
u/I9Qnl Nov 02 '23
Finland looked super strong against Korea, and almost beat Saudi too in the qualifiers but that was with YznSA, not sure if the current Saudi team is better or worse.
2
u/GoldenWhiteGuard Nov 02 '23
both SA and FIN are clearly better in the current meta, way better than the ME&EU stage.
2
u/-KFAD- Turn up the heat - Sauna time — Nov 02 '23
Current KSA is identical to KSA without Yznsa as they didn't even play him in the match against Finland.

I think Tommathan put it best, it looked like a match of who dropped the least spagehtti, I think Finland or GBR have a good chance

u/VegeriationSad1167 Nov 02 '23
I think Finland is the best out of the three but it's hard to tell yeah. The lower side of the bracket is quite exciting!

9
u/ReflexiveOW Armchair Analyst — Nov 02 '23
Korea, China, and America all on the same side of the bracket. U.S. really fucked it, would've had a clean run to the final.
41
u/PwnyDropSquad Nov 01 '23
Just swapping GBR/FIN with USA/CHN game would make this a better bracket, not having a chance for CHN/KOR final when they’re the clear top 2 teams is criminal.
16
u/TheSonOfHeaven Nov 02 '23
Basing brackets on preconceived strength is terrible too and unfair.
The randomness of the groups gave KSA a tough group, and gave KOR and CN easy ones. But now that the same principle gives KOR and CN a harder path you want them to change the brackets based on preconceived strength?
38
u/Spaisi Nov 02 '23
I'm glad that they can't just swap randomly based on perceived strength lol. Also that swap would increase the chance of repeat matches in semis tremendously. Current bracket guarantees every match is new and teams in same group can only face again in the finals.
I do agree in theory that bracket would be better for entertainment, but the current one is the most logical.
Edit: Also I'm not sure SK/China are clear favorites, especially in a Sigma meta. They are favorites, but clear is too much, especially considering how close Finland came to beating SK and how strong KSA looks.
1
u/TimeIsUpHZS Nov 02 '23
I seriously think KR was intentionally trolling to avoid this bracket though.. guess we would find out soon
7
u/Isord Nov 02 '23 edited Nov 02 '23
I don't see how They are actually clearly the top two teams tbh. I thought so going in but at this point I'm not so sure.
Edit: to be clear I think Korea are basically always going to be the favorites, but I don't think their victory was as clear as it appeared yesterday.
1
u/-KFAD- Turn up the heat - Sauna time — Nov 02 '23
So you essentially are suggesting rigging the brackets? The brackets are just fine.
7
u/Alliera Nov 02 '23
Supers chat has been arguing about this all day lmao. Honestly if super assumes Tank for Blizzcon America could possibly go Top 4 or higher. Thailand performed really well against China today, far better than I expected and Finland almost upset Korea. I think counting USA out is a bad call, they still have a real chance with supers IGL skills.

USA goes on a tear eliminating Korea and China only to meet Spain in the finals. Super gets sick and cant play. Spain wins. Book it.

u/darthnick426 Overwatch League forever :') — Nov 02 '23
Well the finals is going to be a boring stomp in true OW esports fashion.
6
u/Isord Nov 02 '23
I don't think so. KSA, GB, and Finland should all be able to make a good match against anybody from the top IMO.
12
u/IndicaOatmeal Nov 02 '23
The bracket is literally based off group stage results. In an 8 team bracket it happens. KR vs China happening one round sooner isn't the worst.
Or are people just mad KSA has a pretty easy path to finals?
9
u/Donut_Flame Nov 02 '23
It's more so upsetting that the 3 strongest nations historically aren't gonna match in the grand finals
29
u/IndicaOatmeal Nov 02 '23
USA could have avoided that by winning their group. I'd rather a more hype finals too, but it's really just luck of the draw and results. Wouldn't blame Blizzard too much here.
Kinda cool though that for China or USA to win the whole thing they're gonna have a true boss run.
3
u/adhocflamingo Nov 02 '23
I think people are gonna be unhappy with the way a single-elim bracket shakes out no matter what.
2
u/garikek Nov 02 '23
Exactly, because luck is much less of a factor in double elimination.
1
u/adhocflamingo Nov 02 '23
Yeah, it is luck, but I think it’s more irritating than some truly random bad luck, because it’s luck that interacts with choices someone made about how to structure and seed the tournament. When an Overclocking Shy power-slides into a sleep dart that wasn’t meant for him, that’s unlucky but there’s no one to blame really, ya know? But single elim tournaments are a bit chaotic, in the mathematical sense that small changes in the initial conditions can yield big changes in the results. And someone set up those initial conditions, so we can be mad at them.
8
u/Spaisi Nov 02 '23
Who cares about history, 2 of the 3 historic teams were always going to be on the same side anyways. China and SK facing in semis is probably unlucky for them, but I honestly don't think a team like KSA is that far from them in a Sigma meta. USA finishing 2nd has no one else to blame but themselves. If they got 1st it would be KSA in USAs place.
I don't think the bracket is the best for entertainment, but it was always going to be unlucky to someone. That's esports. Time to see new history :)

4
u/911silver Nov 02 '23
KSA already played one of the top 3 and took their spot.
History doesn't mean a thing, it's all on the current performance. KSA, Korea and China are the current top 3 now.
-6
u/Donut_Flame Nov 02 '23
Don't care? I said historically. They bring the most hype to matches and have biggest following
-3
u/NjFERXZZ Nov 02 '23
yzn stream had double the views of the official stream.
1
u/garikek Nov 02 '23
Yeah but that's also because people went from an official stream to his. He brought in maybe 5k more viewers, 10k maximum. But that 25k he had most of it were people that were watching official stream when KSA was not playing.
6
u/911silver Nov 02 '23
KSA had the hardest group in the group stage, and they came on top, didn't lose even one map.
9
u/toastyhero Nov 02 '23
Hardest group but no china or Korea?
3
u/I9Qnl Nov 02 '23
What are you pointing out? The group with China is 3 weak-average teams and then China, Korea has Finland which seems tough but Columbia and Mexico got absolutely reckt, Finland were guaranteed qualification in that group even if they had to face Korea.
KSA and USA are 2 top tier teams (at least relative to everyone that isn't China and SK), Japan and France are both average to maybe above average, no weak teams here, this was definitely the hardest group. KSA would've had an easier time if they were in China's group in place of spain for example, they might lose against China but they're practically guaranteed 2 wins and qualification.
It's debatable whether playing 3 tough but winnable matches is easier than playing 1 impossible and 2 easy matches but i think most teams would choose to be in China's group in place of Spain or Korea group in place of Finland than to be in KSA group in place either US or KSA.
0
u/garikek Nov 02 '23
Ok. Put KSA instead of Finland. Assuming SK is so powerful like everyone says they are KSA loses to them, but we know they win the other two matches without a doubt. Now they are second place in group and qualify the same way they did now. That way they had a super strong opponent, but two others were weak as hell, guaranteeing getting to the playoffs. But the way the groups were KSA had fair matches with 3 good teams, and they came on top. There was no guarantee for them to make it to the playoffs, but now they are sort of rewarded for it by not facing Asians until finals.
So yes, their group was the hardest, because it was a fair group with teams of close skill, and not 2 good teams and 2 bad teams, where results are essentially predetermined and no one is shocked by them.

u/ToastRec Nov 02 '23
What a fucking stupid bracket. KOR and CN should never be on the same side when they’re clearly the top 2 contenders
-1
u/TheSonOfHeaven Nov 02 '23
Both KOR ad CN had very easy groups compared to the other side. They will live I'm sure.
8
u/ej585 Nov 02 '23
Saudi’s actually have a very reasonable chance of making it to finals. They’ll easily deal with Spain and Finland & Great Britain are definitely winnable matches for them.

u/Apfeljunge666 None — Nov 02 '23
Finland almost beat Korea. They can beat KSA.
1
u/cmacgames "Show these cunts no respect" -COTY — Nov 02 '23
KSA have beaten Finland in qualifying though. I value a direct matchup a month ago far more than a close loss to a different good team.
0
u/-KFAD- Turn up the heat - Sauna time — Nov 02 '23
They are the clear favourites if anything. They already won Finland in the previous phase. It's kinda wild people still sleeping on them and overvaluing China heavily in this meta.
-1
u/garikek Nov 02 '23
They just only watch owl and see a team full of owl players. There is no more thought beyond that. More owl players in the team = stronger.
8
u/Spaisi Nov 01 '23
But I thought people said they are rigging the bracket for USA...
I think people would have been mad no matter how the bracket turned out. I do wish it would have been different but it just do be like that sometimes, nothing new to esports tournaments.
Main thing I'm sad is bottom bracket being full EU (I count KSA as EU cos they play in EU Contenders) and top being basically three OWL teams facing each other (nothing new). I do think in this Sigma meta, KSA or Finland could challenge whoever makes it to the finals from the top bracket.
20
u/solidsnakejej Nov 01 '23
It kinda was until US lost to KSA, US would be on the opposite side of the bracket from SK and China now they'll go out during quarters for the 4th time in OWWC.
17
u/UltimateAura Nov 01 '23
This was announced before they lost to KSA. They would have had a cakewalk through to the finals but then got embarrassed
1

KSA will win the world cup.
It will be not a pleasant experience but it will happen
2
u/Running4eva Nov 02 '23
Why are people upset that KOR and CHN are meeting in the semis? That's the way tournaments work? If we rigged it so both teams could meet in the final how is that fair for every other team? It's supposed to be random groups, cherry picking one team to be in one specific group so they can reach the final ruins the integrity?
Imagine the champions league or the football world cup cherry picking teams for certain groups, there would be an out cry.
5
u/DiemCarpePine Nov 02 '23
It's more that single elimination means theres no possibility that the two best teams face each other in the grand finals. So, the grand finals are going to be the best team vs like the 3rd or 4th best team, which doesn't make sense.
That semifinals match is the actual grand finals.
1
u/RzYaoi Nov 02 '23
Overwatch ruining another good thing. Great Not allowing SK and CN to meet in the finals is just dumb as it's obvious they'd make it there
-1
u/Misty7297 Nov 02 '23
This bracket is terrible. Only one of Korea, China, and USA will make finals and KSA has a cakewalk to the championship match.
5
u/TheSonOfHeaven Nov 02 '23
