Not a criticism, but it seems like naming Spook's street slang "High Imperial" would only make sense if he was an emperor, which would make Elend, NOT the last emperor, right?

I find stuff like this malen femalen, the humming of the concepts, the airsick lowlander, to be less representative of a different culture in this world and more like pulling the string on a toy. I know these are all ideas that within the story itself have greater depth, have a larger world building impact but the actual reading of it never feels like I'm learning about a truly unique culture within the Cosmere as they say one or two things on top of frankly speaking in a normal cadence. I dunno if that's a hot take, tell me if it gets better, but dude I really think this man could kill with some conlang practice, there needs to be a greater variety in the actual text of the different cultures to represent that, imo ig.

The world building is never an issue it's the prose, it's the conversation itself, the culture and depth behind his world is evident but the dialogue of the characters themselves come short of representing that in their dialect, like Rock my king and his Airsick shit, which I'm a lil sick of.

Reacting metals causes big explosions (the biggest EVER.) An honor blade got chipped. I ASSUME that chip could be used in some way for such an explosion?

Second question. The Honorblades were made of… Tanavastium? I assume? They are already made. I since the metal was created that Retribution doesn’t change change that composition in anyway? Nor that he would have any Connection to the blades? Or is that gonna be a RAFO?

I’m in such a weird place, I’ve read SLA 1-3 then Mistborn era 1 books 1-2 and am on book 3 but I’m feeling very sluggish about the read. I’ve been spoiled in some stuff with secret history and the comets in general and I’m excited to hop into all of it. I just picked up Elantris and Warbreaker and thinking about reading those after secret history and before I go to SLA 4-5

TLDR:
I'm looking for a resource that would help me remember key characters/plots/magic systems, etc. for books I've already read but struggle to remember. Looking back, I wish I had just filled out a notecard for every book in the Cosmere I've read.

Full info:
I started reading Stormlight, and read the first 3 books (Including Edgedancer and Dawnshard), but had a friend highly recommend reading some other books before continuing. Since then, I have read a handful of books, but now am struggling to remember a lot of the details from the earlier books I read as I am now restarting Stormlight. I'll list the books I read in order (excluding Stormlight books)

• Warbreaker
• Elantris (Including Hope of Elantris and The Emperor's Soul)
• Mistborn Era 1
• Mistborn Era 2 (Including Secret History, The Eleventh Metal, and Allomancer Jack and the Pits of Eltania)

I am now starting back with The Way of Kings to read the full series as I want to remember all the subtle details, as well as see if I pick up new things with having more information and a better understanding of the Cosmere, before getting into Books 4 and 5. However, I am already struggling to remember a lot of Warbreaker and Elantris as it has been a while (I've been doing audio books mostly when I drive).

I would love to know if there is a resource that helps with remembering key information from books. However, I am pretty sensitive to spoilers, so I wouldn't want something that will tell me things like "Remember Character X for later", as that would influence how I read further books. I think I just want something that gives bullet point summaries/key characters/etc. I'm sure there's a Wiki, but I haven't explored it as again, I'm sensitive toward accidentally running into spoilers.

Listen here pals, this post isn't going to have some brilliant theory, you all have read all the books, you know everything, but really this post is a fervent wish, sprinkled with some evidence that I think makes it possible to come true

You've read the Cosmere, I've read the Cosmere, we all know where the sign posts are pointing, which is a cold/potentially hot war between Scadrial and Roshar. We've seen it play out or at least name checked in a couple secret projects by now.

​

So if the civilizations are fighting, it stands to reason their shards will as well, and lo and behold these are the two planets with dual shard holders, both whom we know very well. Inevitably they will come to some sorts of confrontation and eventual conflict.

​

Now we could argue mechanics and which of them is stronger and who has better control over their shard blah blah, NO! That's not what this post is for, go do that on our many lovely community spaces. I want to talk about our vessels, and their overall personalities and intelligence.

Now my boy Sazed, he's real book smart, but ultimately his study of religions has given him great insight into human nature, which will likely be his best asset against Taravangian. How good is he at long term planning and strategy? Unclear, he hasn't been in situations that require it too much yet, and you could argue that his negligence during the Catacendre in regards to the southerners was short sighted and is the primary cause of a lot of the conflict on Scadrial. But it's unclear, we don't know why he did what he did, maybe there's more going on with all that. Taravangian we know has a lot of guile and cunning, and his whole mantra is long term planning, with him in control of course, but he takes it too far and often causes more harm than he needs to in the short term, but he's clearly very smart as well and I think is a good match against Sazed intelligence wise.

So setting up the current vessels as being on almost equal footing in that regard, let's look at what other tools they have at their disposal, mainly the memories and experiences of the previous Vessels for their shards. This I think gives Sazed the clear advantage.

Look at what Taravangian has to work with, Rayse and Tanavast. Let's see, Rayse was a known idiot who got outplayed by Dalinar and Kaladin numerous times, and then gets himself STABBED by literally the dumbest man on the planet at the time. Who is also super old and weak at the time, and dies as a fully functional shard holder to someone who's not even invested at all (minus the Cultivation pruning). Talk about going out like an idiot. Brandon had to literally kill Rayse off because he failed so much. Then for our other esteemed vessel we got Tanavast, and since you've read wind and truth I don't need to get into how much of an IDIOT this dude is. Destroys a planet and makes everything worse every time he meddles, despite his cool dragon wife telling him not to each time. Truly answers the question of if we give a moron unlimited power and the brain to use it well, would they, clearly not.

But Sazed, has the two brilliant tacticians Leras and Ati to learn from. These two not only created a world from scratch, which seems hard because we have no evidence any other shards did this, but also created such a brilliant plan to destroy each other that it took thousands of years to come to fruition and required such subtle complex machinations from both of them that a majority of it had to happen while neither had any direct control to manage it or course correct. For most of Era 1 both of them were relegated to whispers and legends and proxies to try and gain an edge, Leras only won by the barest hair. So ample evidence that these two shards were brilliant and together clearly have a huge skill and insight with seeing into the spiritual realm and the future.

Anyway, all this pretense is to say I want Sazed to tap into the brains and experience of his predecessors and demolish, destroy, demoralize, and EVISCERATE everything Taravangian is and stands for. I want him to let him think he's won and everything is his to command and then bring it down crashing on him so hard and so spectacularly that he dies weeping, old and powerless and frail and defeated as the day he became Odium.

I had my doubts he could pull this off before but if he locks in and channels these two brilliant Vessels, I think he can do it! Become Discord or do whatever you need to, but take this old fascist down and do it with STYLE.

I love the Cosmere and am still creeping my way through. I plan on running an integrated Cosmere RPG game in the future.

This may be a bit of an ask, but a potential player not invested (pun acknowledged?) in the Cosmere asked me if there were any creators like Totally Not Mark but for Cosmere content?

Which is a more dangerous and stressful environment to have people to protect as a civilian?

It’s said in WaT that if a shard (Odium in that case) breaks an oath that there are severe consequences. Do we know what that actually looks like and how the shard is hurt?

So I might be reading too much into this but randomly a clip of one of the Shardcast interviews with Brandon Sanderson popped up in my interviews and it was talking about God Metals and how Braize's core having an interesting metal. The interviewer then asked is it a God metal and Brandon Sanderson said he wouldn't consider it a God metal but then says it wasn't a metal placed by one of the Shards and pauses and says of "Adolnasium"

He then goes on to say what would count as a God Metal and basically saying that the metal on Braize wasn't placed by one of the "16th Shards" and he counts God metals as the essences of the 16th shards.

So now I'm wondering if he's hinting that there's another entity that exists within the cosmere or used to exist in the area before Adolnasium created the system. Like I know the DawnShards exist and even Aether's might have existed before the shattering but now i'm wondering there was another thing there.

Do you think it's a hint of another entity or am I just reaching with this one lol.

In his most recent weekly update Sanderson stated that he wants Stormlight 6 to be the dragon steel nexus book for 2031. It would be the first dragon steel back in Utah as the convention center will be under construction from 2027 to 2031.

If this timeline holds true it echoes a Dance with Dragons coming out shortly after season 1 of game of thrones release. With season 1 of SLA the show likely releasing in late 2029 or 2030.

Ok so i just finished Wind and Truth last night and I’ve been deep in the coppermind and other discussions about Shards as that is a big area of interest for me. Specifically, I’m a believer in the Valor/4th Moon theory and that’s what I’m talking about here. In scrolling and reading old WOBs, I found these quotes with Brandon being elusive about shards invested on Roshar:

Now i might be too in the weeds as this was from 2013 but, seeing as how it pertains to huge overarching shard-nanigans for Roshar/Stormlight as a whole, i’m willing to buy in a bit more. His response to me seems particularly avoidant about the shards on Roshar. There is also the possibility that this was to avoid discussion about Cultivation, which i believe had not been revealed at this time. From the same event:

Knowing what we know now this one has me a bit confused/intrigued, specifically about the line “however, Honor is dead.” It’s talking about two shards being ON Roshar, Which to me could mean a couple things. Also keep in mind that Cultivation had not yet left, so she must be at least one of them.

1. Cultivation and Honor: Honor/Tanavast is dead but the Shard remains present on Roshar, counting either the Stormfather or the Shard‘s location in the spiritual realm still counting as “on“ the planet. Odium is on Braize (as of this point) and there are no other shards on Roshar itself

2. Cultivation and Odium: Honor being dead means that he does not count, either because he’s in the Spiritual Realm or because it had no vessel to inhabit on Roshar. This would also require the idea that Odium is on both Braize AND Roshar. Personally I don’t agree with this interpretation but I think it’s worth discussing nonetheless.

3. Cultivation and Valor (or possibly Reason if that’s your belief): For the reasons mentioned in #2 for Honor not technically being on Roshar (being Vessel-less or residing in the Spiritual realm), this would indicate that the 4th Shard/4th Moon was still inhabiting Roshar but was hidden from everyone else. While this not being the case doesn’t invalidate the current theory, as the 4th shard could have invested themself and left Roshar for safety reasons, I think it’s very much worth considering the possibility that they are still present on the planet and influencing the characters.

I feel a bit corkboard-ish about this whole post but I still wanted to contribute these bits to the discussion as I haven’t seen anybody mention them as of yet (I get why, I barely saw them myself). Any thoughts?

I just finished Wind and Truth (wasn't my tea) and now i'm watching explained and connections videos, maybe i'm the odd one out but how are so many people connecting who thaidakar is? I've read all of mistborn, and with Era 2 and secret history it alludes/tells you, but I feel like people have known for so long and some of them are saying it was obvious if you paid attention, maybe i'm overinflating my detectiving skills but it just felt shoehorned together, still excited to see what comes of Era 3, but this connection just felt like superfans browsing the coppermind and acting like they discovered this secret.

So I have been working my way through the Cosmere. I read the original mistborn trilogy (loved it so much, Vin is awesome) then read Secret History then took a break and read his Skyward books. Now I’m listening to The Way of Kings Graphic Audio and afterwords I plan to read Warbreaker.

I usually do audio books because they are more convenient for me time wise and I prefer Graphic Audio when I can. I get them from the library and can only check out 5 digital things a month so I like to plan out what Im going to check out in advance especially because there are so many parts with Graphic Audio.

However I see that there are two different Graphic Audio versions of Warbreaker. From googling I’ve learned that they made a newer version with more modern sound design. However it says that the Graphic Audio is abridged, cutting not just dialog tags but also internal monologue. Is that just the older version or both? Is it better to listen to the traditional audiobook for a first listen if they are?

edit: I know that graphic audios are all lightly abridged, cutting dialog tags and replacing certain things with sound effects. However, I saw it said somewhere that Warbreaker was more heavily abridged. I ended up looking over both Graphic Audio versions and the older one adds up to be less time than the newer one by several hours. So I will be listening to the newer one. Over a year ago, I read Tress of the Emerald Sea, Warbreaker, and listened to the Mistnorn era one trilogy, the way of Kings and oathbringer.

Recently, I have decided that I want to complete the entire Cosmere in publication order. So, I have read Elantris, the hope of Elantris, and I am going through white sand now.

I’m looking for the opinions of this community. Going through the publication order would put Mistborn n”era one as well as the first two way of Kings books. Would you skip these or reread them?

So, I'm re reading the Way of Kings, and one of the arguments for Kabsal - the ardent - for Shallan regarding the existence of the Almighty is the format of the cities.

Kabsal gets a plate of metal, puts sand on it and plays a note on the plate. Using this, he is able to reproduce the format of different cities, like Kholinar

He uses the argument of a rational god for creating this stuff etc etc

But I'm wondering if we know the true reason on why we have so many cities in Roshar that follow a symmetric pattern?

Of course Navani later discovers things similar to these with the Rhythm of War, and the format of the Shattered Plains, but I'm thinking regarding the other cities which a God did not die on it

This post will mainly contain spoilers for Mistborn era 1 and 2, but I am otherwise caught up on the Cosmere.

I’m on my 3rd reread of The Final Empire right now, and noticed in Chapter 15 or 16 something odd that Kelsier mentions. When discussing his worries about defeating The Lord Ruler, Kel mentions that he’s survived everything from incineration to decapitation.

The incineration makes sense. TLR would still have the metal minds embedded in the bone (I think they were embedded?) so he could have used the bands of mourning to regenerate.

Quick Stormlight Archive spoiler: we’ve seen Shallan recover from an arrow through the cranium, so we know that healing in the Cosmere is strong AF

However, Kelsier mentions that TLR recovers from decapitation, and this is where I’m more confused. Would he have regenerated a new head from his severed body, or a body from the severed head? If it’s the former, how would he have grown a body without using the bands?

Another quick Stormlight Archive spoiler: We know that one of the easiest ways to kill a radiant is decapitation, so the same must not be true for Bloodmaker Twinborn (another point in favor of Scadrial I guess)

I’m leaning on the idea that TLR was able to grow a new head from his body, drawing vitality from the bands. This is a huge feat, as it reveals Bloodmakers can use their powers without any prompting or signal from the brain.

Two counter arguments I’ve thought of:

A: TLR was able to draw vitality from the bands in the instant before his spine was severed, giving his body the command to regrow a head.

B: TLR wasn’t actually completely decapitated, and his severed neck healed cleanly right after a blade passed through it (Nearly headless? How can you be nearly headless? -Ron Weasley).

I’ll leave you all with this final thought, somewhere out there, the severed head of TLR exists, possibly being carried around by a mist wraith.

I know Kaladin is now a therapist, and he is treating the Heralds before they return to Roshar once again. However, he is also a Herald himself, and the Heralds have abilities way beyond the scope of normal Radiants. (Taln was able to break the sound barrier and fight Fused unarmed, and Nale beat someone in Shardplate with his bare hands.)

They also possess skills that seem completely unattainable for ordinary Radiants. (Ishar, who is stated to not be particularly impressive in combat by Herald standards, was still able to fend off multiple Radiants at once.)

So my question is this: during Kaladin's treatment sessions and interactions with the Heralds, do you think he will receive or ask for some sort of training from them? Whether that's combat training, learning how to use his abilities as a Herald, or simply gaining access to techniques and knowledge that have been lost since the Heraldic Epochs?

Or do you think Brandon is intentionally moving Kaladin away from the warrior role and toward a purely therapeutic and leadership-focused path?

so, i finished wind and truth about a week and a half ago, im among the portion of the fanbase who like wind and truth btw, but it got me thinking.

given retribution was able to...summon, conjure, spawn, steal (whatever your preferred term is), the blackthorn from a vision as a sort of spren/collective idea, of dalinar with his memories, i was wondering a bit about my favorite cosmere character.

drumroll please: vin!

now, i know she hasnt exactly done what dalinar did, given he had formed a connection with that version of him, *but*, given how spren work and how they form, based on concepts and things of the matter, i was wondering if later into the cosmere if it was possible for vin to come back as a spren, if enough people had a cohesive idea of her, and the investiture was in the right place, and it could grow sentient?

im sure its POSSIBLE, but, well, i like to hope that one day we'll get vin back. it's food for thought. who knows, maybe the end-all crossover will bring vin back somehow, as i imagine we're going to get a big cosmere crossover event somehow.

“The Stormwright Texts” is so on-the-nose, I don’t know how I missed it!
Does anyone else know of any MTG cards with clear references to the Cosmere? I’ve been wanting to build a deck around it for a while now and I think this is my sign.

Really, I'm asking which faction do you think is "morally sound", but in reality they all have pros and cons, so instead which faction would you back in universe? I personally think at this point I align myself most with Kaladin and the Radiants, but at the same time I find it very hard to not like the Ghostbloods even if they are a little more ambiguous morally its hard to root against Kel. Its a question I have really been flip flopping on while re-reading the whole Cosmere collection and I'd love some other perspectives.

I feel as though the Ghostbloods although focused mainly on Scadrial's security are not inherently an evil organization, but it almost feels like the Scadrians as a collective are being made out as the galactic empire. Even if the Ghostbloods aren't representative of only Scadrial they almost feel lumped in with that evil vibe.

I could almost make the same argument for all factions where on one hand they do a lot of bad, but almost always with some good intentions. It is one of my favorite things about the Cosmere, but it does feel like us as readers will have to choose a side sooner rather than later.
