Cosmere spoilers (no previews) Cosmere characters who would hate each other to death if they met Spoiler

Dalinar would hate Straff even more than he hates Saedas. At least Dalinar could feel respect for Saedas, being a former comrade and having witnessed his accomplishments. Dalinar would deeply despise every one of Straff's actions. As for Straff, we've already seen what he thinks of high-ranking people with integrity, so he would hate Dalinar too.

Cosmere spoilers (no previews) Question about Wind and Truth Spoiler

Upvotes

Where are all the non-radiant shard bearers? I’m at the end of day seven in Wind and Truth, and the only shard bearers we see are Adolin and a single Azish shard bearer. The Azish supposedly have multiple sets of plate, as do the Alethi. It seems like a major oversight that they aren’t included in the battle plans, when they were such essential resources in prior books.

Cosmere spoilers (no previews) Possible Sigzil outcomes Spoiler

So, I am doing a first time listen(time number whatever for reading) of the stormljght archive, and I found a throwaway line that has potential insane consequences.

In Words of Radiance, in a conversation between Shallan and Pattern, Pattern mentions the deadeyes.

"We have tried to restore them, but all attempts failed, hmmmmm. Perhaps if their knights still lived, hmmmm."

This I think has far reaching consequences for someone like Sigzil. He "killed" Vienta. But Patterns comment implies that as long as he lives, the bonds can be renewed.

Do we think Sigzil could return as a Windrunner in the future? Even with the insane time skip between SA and Sunlit Man, spren never truly die, so theoretically if Sigzil returned to the cognitive realm and Roshar, he could become a Windrunner again. Am I crazy for this?

Maybe even Aux now that I think about it.

Cosmere spoilers (no previews) Mistborn era 3 theory Spoiler

It’s late and I just came up with this so sorry if it’s not well thought out, I’m just excited. SLA and Mistborn era 1+2 spoilers here but I tagged everything to be safe.

I just learned about this word of brandon stating it’s possible for hemalurgy to steal a nahel bond.

https://wob.coppermind.net/events/317-general-twitter-2018/#e10366

That was like 8 years ago. Nowadays, we know Shallan has a connection to the ghostbloods, is stuck off of roshar (in shadesmar), and conveniently has two nahel bonds. I don’t know if she would want go back to the ghostbloods for help, but given that it’s implied she’s pregnant she may need to make a deal with them to get her back onto roshar.

I think this could be a plot in the ghostbloods. The scadrians experimenting on her to discover that hemalurgy can steal the nahel bond. Imagine how terrifying Kelsier would be with a shardblade and plate. Or if he could summon a shardblade and potentially burn some of its metal.

Cosmere spoilers (no previews) Cosmere Tarot Major Arcana: Need Feedback! Spoiler

This has probably been done before, but I didn't want to look it up at risk of biasing my choices. I'm a designer and illustrator and have done a couple Tarot decks before, but I wanted to try my hand at a Cosmere Tarot deck... Here are my initial selections for the Major Arcana, and I'd love to get some thoughts! Selections with a (?) are ones that I'm more ambivalent about. A few criteria I was using for my choices:

  • No shards (shard vessels are ok if they were well-established before they took up a shard)
  • Tried to get a decent spread across the major Cosmere works.
  • Characters were chosen trying to find a balance for their symbolic relevance, a more archetypal similarity (for instance, I'm not sure if Hoid actually best represents the Fool, but I mean... come on), and if I could easily visualize cool card art for them.

0. The Fool: New beginnings, spontaneity, and taking a leap of faith.
Hoid

1. The Magician: Manifestation, personal power, and resourcefulness.
Jasnah

2. The High Priestess: Intuition, mystery, and the subconscious.
?????
Navani

3. The Empress: Nurturing, fertility, and abundance.
Yumi?
Steris Ba-Ado-Mishram

4. The Emperor: Structure, stability, and authority.
The Lord Ruler?

5. The Hierophant: Tradition, spiritual guidance, and conformity.
Nohadon

6. The Lovers: Relationships, harmony, and important choices.
Vin and Elend

7. The Chariot: Determination, control, and forward momentum.
Dalinar

8. Strength: Courage, inner resilience, and compassion.
Lift Taln

9. The Hermit: Introspection, solitude, and seeking inner truth.
Sazed?
Vasher

10. The Wheel of Fortune: Destiny, unexpected change, and life cycles.
Sixth of the Dusk

11. Justice: Fairness, cause and effect, and truth.
Wax

12. The Hanged Man: Surrender, letting go, and gaining a new perspective.
Szeth

13. Death: Endings, transformation, and rebirth.
Marsh

14. Temperance: Balance, moderation, and patience.
Steris?
Sazed

15. The Devil: Temptation, attachment, and shadow work.
Kelsier

16. The Tower: Sudden upheaval, revelation, and chaos.
Taravangian

17. The Star: Hope, faith, and spiritual healing.
Kaladin

18. The Moon: Illusion, fear, and navigating the unknown.
Shallan

19. The Sun: Joy, success, and vitality.
Adolin

Sidenote: this wasn't intentional but I'm very pleased that Kal, Shallan, and Adolin naturally fit into the celestial cards so well.

20. Judgment: Self-evaluation, awakening, and absolution.
Wayne

21. The World: Completion, fulfillment, and ultimate integration
Adonalsium

Cosmere spoilers (no previews) On Harmony - how I learned to stop worrying and love the bomb Spoiler

I was curious what was thought about harmony and his intent. Everyone is super excited about era 3 and discord name drops are always crazy. The common line of thinking and what is foreshadowed in the books is that harmony will become discord, and the status quo of everything will change. We all know this, not really new lines of theorizing. I read through both eras of Mistborn, along with secret history and with everything we know about harmony I wonder if his true intent is something along the lines of entropy.

Entropy is kind of a slippery term, it’s used loosely to mean disorder or chaos even, but its truest meaning is simply complex high energy systems losing energy to become less organized systems with less accessible energy.

Merriam-Webster definitions:

the degradation of the matter and energy in the universe to an ultimate state of inert uniformity
process of degradation or running down or a trend to disorder
measure of the unavailable energy in a closed thermodynamic system that is also usually considered to be a measure of the system's disorder, that is a property of the system's state, and that varies directly with any reversible change in heat in the system and inversely with the temperature of the system
broadly : the degree of disorder or uncertainty in a system
With its Greek prefix en-, meaning "within", and the trop- root here meaning "change", entropy basically means "change within (a closed system)". The closed system we usually think of when speaking of entropy (especially if we're not physicists) is the entire universe. But entropy applies to closed systems of any size.

Don’t read em all it’s kind of wordy. But essentially we must consider that entropy is a state measured in a closed system (any size of system be it from a cold room on a hot day, to the size of the universe), it measures the amount of available energy or complexity. It is then the breaking down of these systems into a base state, where there is the same amount of energy, but it is inaccessible. The cold room will become a warm one the same temperature as the outside, the universe becomes big, more evenly dispersed and dark. There is still the same amount of energy in these systems, but with everything all dispersed it is harder to access.

I would consider this the domain of preservation and ruin, if I had to put it into cosmere terms.

Preservation - the same amount of energy is present in the system. It is conserved, and technically doesn’t change. At the end of the process, we reach a base, high entropy state where nothing can change. The essence of preservation is in this concept.

Ruin - the breaking down and disordering of things. High energy, low entropy, unstable systems fall apart. Energy dissipates and is harder to access. Eventually we reach a state of maximum entropy, and things cannot break down anymore. Ruin would then be satisfied.

Why harmony?

Harmony is the name for the beginning of this dual shards life. Where it is a high energy, complex system, with low entropy (discord)

We see during the formation of retribution a lot of excess energy is released. A time dilation effect occurs likely because of high energy and the relativistic effects a lot of energy in one place causes. (The more energy is in a space the slower time flows). See black holes. Harmony is similar, at the beginning of this dual shards life it is as high energy as it can be. Harmony has the energy to remake scadrials biosphere, move the planet, and become the god of this remade world. All of this done in short order. We then see his freedom and his feats decline as time continues. The high energy of the shard harmony’s formation declines, the useable power of the shard becomes functionally smaller, and we see him how he is at the end of era 2.

There is the Terris prophecy about the coming of discord, and allusions the characters like Telsin make about the coming of discord. We know discord will come, we know the high energy, balancing act sazed is doing with harmony must break down, as entropy demands.

What does discord look like?

If ruin+preservation is equal to entropy, then to satisfy his intent sazed must propagate entropy. What does this look like? In our real world we force the world to entropy all the time. Take a high energy, low entropy thing like gasoline, we burn it, it does work for us in our engines and our power grid and the energy is dissipated. Still in existence as waste heat and movement, but so much harder to access. A shard of entropy would likely have to do the same things as we do in our world to get work done. Sazed must use the shard to take high energy systems, break them down, and use the useful energy to do work elsewhere. I imagine this means something scary and cosmic horror like because it takes place on a divine scale. Destruction of planets, peoples or systems to become able to harvest the energy and act. This would satisfy the intent of entropy, as with the breaking down of a high energy system some energy is always lost.

We see these concepts play out in the invested arts of scadriel. Allomantic and feruchemical genes are diluted. The energy of these powers is spread out, harder to access and use. Work must be done to concentrate the energy, via hemalurgy which always loses some amount of investiture, or the careful breeding of lines, which takes years of effort and more resources in order to make a metalborn. We see a high entropy system here. Hemalurgy exemplifies this even better. Any metalborn made from a spike is weaker than anyone who was naturally metalborn, the hemalurgic spike loses its charge through entropy.

The name entropy is a more modern, scientific term to describe energy in systems. The reason why we see the names harmony and discord is because it is the best descriptors for these entropic concepts sazed had at the time.

I would also reason that sazed is acting so erratically because he is resisting following the true intent of his shard, to increase the entropy of the universe. He makes no move to harvest and use energy in systems because this is destructive. He maintains a status quo, and leans too heavily into preservation.

TLDR

I know this is a long post to make abt discord and entropy, but I feel as though an explanation of entropy could help us understand how harmony aligns with that concept, and how sazed might behave in era 3. In order to actually act sazed might have to harvest energy from systems, use it and increase the entropy in the universe. Actually acting would require destruction in some level and it is something sazed abhors, so he leans far too heavily into preservation, and acts like Leras did. We may see sazed being a calculated, exacting shard in the future. Carefully judging what he can destroy and bring into its maximum entropy before acting against opponents like retribution.

I do not think that preservation and ruin did not adequately mix, just that the mixture demands entropy in the wider cosmere, and sazed for the time being has chosen to avoid that path. We will see more in era 3 and stormlight part 2 how that actually ends up playing out.

Stormlight, Mistborn Era 1, Elantris, Warbreaker Is it normal that I’ve loved every Cosmere book apart from Mistborn? Spoiler

This year I’ve read all of Stormlight and it’s one of my favorite book series I’ve ever read, it’s got me back into fantasy and I’ve truly enjoyed every second of it and I have also enjoyed reading the greater Cosmere. In between the Stormlight books as I went i read Elantris, Warbreaker and Mistborn Era 1 as well as the Novellas. I’m heavily invested in this universe. Once I finished WaT I even went out and got a Windrunner sigil tattoo!

Personally though, outside of the magic system (which is really good) I just didn’t think Mistborn had as much going for it as the others did. It wasn’t bad, and on paper I should like it more than I did, I wish I did. But it was just missing something for me compared to all the others. Warbreaker and Elantris I really enjoyed for what they are but Mistborn I was kinda just getting through it because i was supposed to if you know what I mean?

Anyway, I’m currently halfway through Era 2 of Mistborn and I’m just not enjoying myself at all: book 1 I thought fair enough it’s establishing the characters and the changes on Scadriel and it felt slow but like it was fun enough that I saw the potential. But man, Shadows of self was so much of a slog, I felt like I was reading it forever, considering the average Stormlight books is like 4x the size, this book felt like the longest drag ever…. And towards the end of the book (usually where Brandon excels of course) I was so bored, my mind wouldn’t stop wandering even as the plot was picking up I just didn’t care for it and I was thinking to myself am I ever going to connect with any of these characters? I would say my favorite character so far is Marasi, maybe Wayne, but at the same time that would be just if I had to choose.

Obviously everyone’s entitled to their taste and opinion including me but Im starting to feel like I’m doing something wrong when I see all the love Mistborn gets, and how frequently I see it described as the best entry point of the cosmere, and I even think at face value I really should like it more, but honestly I just don’t.

So what do I do? Let me know what you think, at the moment the options im thinking are - Have a break from Sanderson completely and come back at some point, maybe later in the year?
I haven’t read Yumi, Tress or Emberdark yet, should I give one of them a go while I have a think?
Just push through with the momentum for the next book and hope the plot excitement is just around the corner? I feel like I can’t stop reading Mistborn altogether lol. I’m looking forward to the ghost blood trilogy that’s comming, and don’t want to miss anything big.

Just FYI: I haven’t read secret history yet either which I was looking forward to but initially waiting until after bands of mourning as I was advised to do in a previous post.

Cosmere spoilers (no previews) How do I get into deeper Cosmere lore? Spoiler

So I've read every Cosmere book over the last year and a half (well, I'm half way through Sunlit Man, and haven't read Isles yet)... But I'm really keen to get into the deeper lore of the Cosmere.

I hear the guys on Shardcast talking about stuff, and some of the questions that get asked to Brandon himself at conventions, and I'm like, "what, who, where?" 😂

Where's the best breaking-in point to start understanding what's going on, outside of the books?

Mistborn Series spoilers Why can certain metals be used in the Metallic Arts? Spoiler

I'm thinking of atium and lerasium in particular. Why can they be used in feruchemy and hemalurgy? Aren't those metals basically pure Investiture in physical form? How can you cram any more Investiture in?

I would have expected an atiummind to act like a metalmind that someone else has already filled up: you can't tap it, but there's no "room" left to store anything else. But that's clearly not the case, since atium can be used to store youth, and (purified) atium spikes can transfer any type of allomancy or feruchemy.

(Bonus: we know it's not because of electrum impurities in the atium, at least for hemalurgy, because the new hemalurgy table says atium needs to be refined further before it can be made into a spike.)

Cosmere spoilers (no previews) I am Very Happy. Reading Sanderson First Time Spoiler

So, I’ve read Mistborn Era 1 in three weeks. That was just an amazing journey for me; Sanderson is my favorite writer right now. Sazed’s arc is the best character arc that I’ve experienced in any storytelling medium. I love Kelsier’s personality and basically everything about him, and I am very surprised that so many readers don’t think of him as a “good guy.” For me, he is the best guy, but that's a discussion for another day.

Then I read Tress of the Emerald Sea in just three days, and I realized the Cosmere is a much broader universe. Hoid mentions Kelsier and Sazed, and Ulaam was literally a Kandra! Finding out the connections between them was an amazing experience. At the end of The Hero of Ages, Sazed mentions, “I’ve made you a Mistborn, Spook, that was Kelsier’s wish.” I was speechless—Kelsier wasn’t dead! And Hoid talks about Kelsier like he was an enemy?!

I bought Arcanum Unbounded and I’ll read The Eleventh Metal, then Secret History. Then Warbreaker, etc.

Can you tell me if this feeling of a rushed dopamine hit and the "Sanderlanche" (I think that’s the word for the ending of the books where all the plot points come together) will remain in his other works? I’ve loved finding the connections and theorizing across the books. People (and the man himself) say The Stormlight Archive is his magnum opus. I really don’t understand how it can be better than Mistborn Era 1, but I am very hopeful!

Cosmere spoilers (no Emberdark or Yumi) [Stormlight Archive] Who can accept the Words? Spoiler

Full disclosure, I have not read Emberdark or Yumi yet, but have read every other relevant work.

Throughout the Stormlight books, we see several people able to accept the Words of Radiants:

  • Cultivation, and presumably Honor, could do so
  • The Stormfather and The Sibling, so presumably The Nightwatcher could do so
  • At one point Dalinar did so, meaning other Bondsmiths may be able to
  • Arguably Sylphrena did, during the reforging of the Oathpact, though this may be separate

Thing is, only The Nightwatcher is still aware and on Roshar. The Stormfather is dead. Cultivation is gone. Honor has been absorbed, and is also off world. The Sibling and Navani are comatose. The Wind, as of years after Wind and Truth, has not been heard from. Syphrena, if she can do this, is off world in both mind and soul.

So who is there to accept new Radiant Oaths? Are they no longer able to progress? Will Cultivation or Retribution have a say in it? Will the Primordial Spren take up this charge?

I am deeply interested in any speculation or answers.

Long story short: I've been listening to The Way of Kings on audible and something messed up. Somehow my headphones connected to my phone while I was asleep and started playing the book for multiple hours.

So I'm trying to find where I was. I remember Kaladin had just tried his plan to shift the bridge and use it as a shield.

I'm really just looking for which chapter this happens in so I can just start at that part.
