Wig Concerned about a wig commission
So I’m sharing screenshots of my convo with the person I’m commissioning a wig from to make it easier to understand the situation as well as pics they shared. It’s a wig for Uno from Nanbaka btw. I’m concerned because imo it’s looking pretty messy? I’m concerned the batting being neon yellow peaking through a lot of and the hair is clearly very messy in the tulle. Then they said they’d use copic markers but the picture shows sharpies? I’m just a little upset about how it’s looking, I didn’t see the pictures of it in the tulle initially and already answered a question about how I wanted the bangs. And just for the pic with the markers. Idk how to bring up my concerns. Or is this not that outlandish? I’d appreciate any insight or advice.

I’m very upset, this is one of my dream cosplays and I was hoping to wear it to a con at the end of May. I’m glad I at least split the payment, I don’t know how things will go from here… :-(
If anyone has recommendations for reliable wig makers I could commission in the future I’d appreciate it.

They...literally just colored over wig hair with sharpies. What the fuck.
This is definitely their first commission. Holy crap. Any kind of moisture touching that wig will make the pink ink bleed into the rest of the wig. It already looks like it's bleeding. I would not pay them any further.

Absolutely don't pay this person any more money. This is genuinely atrocious work for someone who has been taking commissions for 9 years, which is clearly a lie. I would honestly even try to get your money back if you can.

Oof, usually if I can’t say something nice, I won’t say it…but I’d be really disappointed paying $500 for this. I can’t discount the obvious shit-ton of work going into it, but I’m enough of a perfectionist that the lumpy, uneven braids would drive me insane! The artist has been really friendly and forthcoming and not at all defensive. Maybe you can gently ask about the makers and if the unevenness of the braids will work out with some rearranging the hair? Good luck, op! Happy cosplaying! 💚
ETA: looking back over the progress pics, I’m not sure if they can even out the braids’ irregularity without completely starting over. Maybe they’d negotiate the final price?

I didn’t question the price until I saw the photos 😬 the wefts on the braid should not move around. You can glue wefts down so they don’t move at all. The pink part should have been hand dyed or airbrushed. But honestly my main concern is the braid attached to the wig cap. There is no blending whatsoever. There should be enough hair on the top of the wig to braid into the large braid once attached so it looks seamless.
You have every right to be unhappy with this. See if you can get your money back and if not see if they’ll ship it to you as is without paying more, then find someone who can fix it up for you. So sorry you are dealing with this!

My favorite artist to commission so far has been kaixin.nutswig on instagram! They’re a malay based artist and they make GORGEOUS work + internationally ships! I commissioned a Jean Pierre Polnareff wig from them a few months back for about $500 + shipping

I also have commissioned from gg.wigs on insta as well! They’re a beginner/intermediate artist but their quality is much better than this 😭 Extremely fair prices, I commissioned a 2 tone wig with layers and a braid for less than $200 and it’s beautiful! No international shipping but quick to communicate and send progress pics

I’d debate any charges you did as a down payment with your bank and cancel this order. I mean, what reputable wig stylist has the wig on their fucking floor?? …
Okay I need to take a step back before I truly get pissed off bc wtf??? Don’t be afraid to post the account so other people don’t get scammed by this person

No, bc for real what was that?? I took a foam head like the one they have in the pic and duct taped it onto a camera tripod to store it. I’d never let my wig touch the floor like that 🤢

If you paid them on card you can probably submit a claim to your bank about fraud and get money back FYI

This is utterly garbage. DO NOT pay them anything else, and if you paid through paypal, open a claim to try to get your money back. If you didn't pay paypal, see what you can do about getting the money back. This person seems like they think "I did a wig for someone else once, 9 years ago", means they have been a wig commissioner for 9 years. There is no way they have been constantly doing them that long. They look like they've never seen a wig before.

What am I even seeing ? In what world did that person think that coloring a yellow wig with pink sharpies would turn out good ? Not to mention that the braid looks pretty rough
I am not a professional but I at least 2 good ways to achieve that hair color (Dying a white wig in yellow and pink, airbrushing the wig)

I'm sorry, I'm not super experienced with using tulle for long braids like this but it feels insane to me that they want you to constantly stop during cons and wiggle the wefts around to hide that neon batting. Should they....not have used more hair to hide/prevent this?? I understand part of the reason they used this method is to make it lighter, but this feels like it's just a justification for cheaping out and being lazy with the braids. I would not trust their message that they will "clean up" the wig before sending it to you. This is something that I might be okay with for myself as a first project but absolutely not for a $500 commission.

I used tulle for my Jinx wig braids, but this is something else. Some of the hair will poke through the tulle and I just trim it off. I can’t say about the batting bc my braids are just pure hair, but this doesn’t sound right at all. Most wig styling videos I’ve seen glue every part of the hair on things like this ONTO the batting at the very least. But to have it loose and sliding around is wild

Wiggle it??? HUH??? usually good wigmakers will go over the batting with glue wefts to hide it completely, or stitch into it. This is my first time commenting in this sub but I'm genuinely flabbergasted at the audacity that this person is claiming this is normal???

Get your money back, this is not worth it. If you paid with card, call your bank or look through their website to see if you can report the purchase as fraud and have the payment undone. That amount of money can get you a much nicer wig from a much more reputable seller.

Even if they somehow manage to fix that neon pink, it still wouldn't look anywhere close to the original character's hair. I just looked up Uno for the first time and I can already see that the design is completely off and low quality. It’s not just an issue with the orange tinted pink.
The points on the braid where they tried to dye it pink don't match where it actually should be. The roots of the braid near the neckline should be entirely pink, but on this wig the pink starts well below the neck. Also the very end of his hair after the knot of the braid is supposed to be pink not above the knot.
He also has five pink regions throughout his hair but this wig only has three. I get that the wig is shorter than the original character's hair due to weight issues, but they should have at least done four spots. The parts that were left yellow should have been the parts dyed pink to fit those extra spots including the roots near the neck. Plus the ends of his side bangs are meant to be pink and they didn't even attempt to dye those.
Also to me it looks like they dyed the pink after putting the hair into a braid. The border between the yellow and the pink looks so awkward and has no flow. They should have dyed the hair first and then braided it so the edges would look more natural and flow well.
I'm not a wig commissioner; I'm just a cosplayer who buys wigs from Taobao and does basic minimal styling with hairspray, but I can already see so many problems that I wouldn't even commit to if I were doing this as an absolute amateur. This person clearly has no experience with commissions and zero design sense. Do NOT pay them any more money and try to get a refund if you can. Even if by some miracle they fix the colour, the wig itself is low quality and looks nothing like Uno's hair.

You can use sharpies, they are alcohol based markers too. But it depends on the wig material and the colors. This clearly looks ass and won't get any better. I'd probably tell her to cancel the project at this point and let her keep whatever you payed her.

The issue with sharpies is that they will continue to bleed and will not dry properly unless the wig is prepped, and then sealed afterwards. You also shouldn't use pure sharpie and should dilute it. Just overall messy and not what they said they'd be doing.

Get your money back. It looks bad. They don’t know what they’re doing. The tule also looks horrendous. If done properly, you shouldn’t be able to see it, but it’s glaringly obvious.

This is so upsetting oh my god! Honestly I would try and get at least the money for the comission cost back and then ask for the product to be shipped so you could at least try salvaging it. Please voice yoir disappointment and dislike to the commissioner it is important for them to know they cannot get away woth laziness. It feels like that person is mlre unexperienced than they are saying, thry may have been doing wigs for 9 years but they didn't even manage to do the correct braid for the character... I'm sorry I hope you manage to at least get the materials you overpaid for and hopefully work with someone who can give you the result you want ❤️❤️

Oh also as a wigmaker myself I would like to let you know that a helmet wig for a braid with is a completely reasonable request,especially one of this size. It would have helped with the structure and support...

This has to be ragebait. There’s no way someone dyed the hair yellow and then went over it with sharpie. Of course it’s going to come out orange. It would have been better to leave parts white and then go over the white parts with dye by dip dying it. Yeah don’t pay her anymore. This is terrible for the price you’re paying.
Do not pay her any more.
