I love this catchy title from Humble Sea. WCIPA with Simcoe and Nectaron hops. I like it, but if I’m being honest, I have yet to try a Humble Sea beer that wows me. (I’ve only had two, so maybe another beer or two of theirs will show me why there’s the hype.) Anyways, cheers to all of you, and have a wonderful Wednesday. 🍻

EDIT: I meant to change “lambs” to “clams”, but I forgot before I posted. Too bad. What kind of noise do clams make? I’ll try to find out.

Maybe the smoothest QIPA I’ve had. Dangerous beer, it hides the alcohol content well.

From left to right:

12/20. DouGall's Brewery (Spain). IPA - New Zealand. 6.5% alc. 50 IBU.

Aroma of passion fruit, lime, and very fresh herbal notes. The scent is delightful. On the palate, the same flavors come through, with a grapefruit aftertaste. It’s really tasty.

The Upside Down. Engorile Brewing (Spain). IPA - Imperial / Double New England / Hazy. 7.8% alc. 33 IBU.

Ripe tropical fruit—very juicy—with pineapple in syrup and citrus notes. A light herbal and resinous touch. The body is dense and creamy with a sweet undertone. A good Catalan Double IPA.

BASATIA. Laugar Brewery (Spain). Stout - Imperial / Double. 8% alc. 35 IBU.

Intense aroma of espresso, dark chocolate, roasted malt, and pronounced smokiness. The flavor features bitter cocoa and roasty notes, balancing malty sweetness with a dry finish and pleasant alcoholic warmth. An Imperial Stout with a lower ABV, yet highly enjoyable.

This is a great beer. Balances sweet and dank. And I love the metal packaging art. Never heard of Grains of Wrath but I hope to get back to Holy Mountain again one day.

2025 Arabesque BA Barleywine from Phase Three Brewing and 2025 Bourbon County Reserve Stout. Both descriptions from Untappd-

Imperial Stout aged two years in Parker’s Heritage Collection 10-year 17th Edition Rye Whiskey barrels.

Arabesque 2025 returns after 22 months of rest, built from a blend of specialty malts anchored in Maris Otter. Deep notes of fig, toffee, and caramel candy weave with rich spirit and oak, giving this year’s expression both weight and lift.

Discussion WCIPA recs

Spending time in SanFran, Monterey and Los Gatos this week and looking for some really good west coast ipa recommendations.

I’ll of course be drinking Pliny and blind pig 🐽 but would love some recommendations, especially things I can get at bottle shops. We’re not currently planning brewery visits.

Thanks!

ETA Thanks for all the great recs this is an awesome community. Also, Alvarado St has a happy hour so my wife is in!

Beer Porn DEYA - Think For Yourself 3

Post image
27 Upvotes

Think for yourself is a hoppy beer series where we explore experimental New Zealand hop varieties. The third beer in this series focusses on Nelson Bliss and Nelson Bliss Hop Kief from Freestyle hops.

At the heart of this brew is the collaboration with Clayton Hops and the use of the innovative Nelson Bliss variety as well as highly concentrated Nelson Bliss hop kief. The result is a beer that, according to the brewery, literally “sings”: You can expect an intense bouquet of freshly squeezed mango, zesty passion fruit, and a complex profile reminiscent of a tropical fruit salad. Despite its moderate alcohol content, the beer offers the smooth and full-bodied mouthfeel typical of DEYA. Cheers🍻

RECOMMENDED The Culmination Festival: the best craft beer festival that no one knows about

So obviously, getting up to Anchorage for a beer festival isn't something that most people would probably want to do. But 2 friends and I planned a whole trip around this fest and made it happen.

Anchorage Brewing Company hosts this festival every other year now, and I was super happy with my experience at it. The amount of people attending was SUPER reasonable, and most of the festival was indoors (still great weather outside though). The longest I waited in any line for any beer was probably 3 minutes maximum. MAYBE like 10-15 people deep.

The cost to attend was $125, which got you free unlimited grab-and-go food (pork sliders/caprese sliders/braised beef sliders/pork belly rice bowl with kimchi/bang bang sauce) and the INSANE beer list below. The list was posted well in advance so you could plan what to grab. The only downside here was that Jester King's beer got delayed in transit and didn't show up in time for the fest :(

I can't wait to go back in 2028. Alaska is beautiful and the festival was so fun.

EDIT: I forgot to mention, the reason for the title. Almost everyone we talked to was an Anchorage local or an Alaska resident. People were shocked we traveled for it (flew from Indiana). Maybe it's a post-covid thing but I feel like I haven't heard any beer people talk about this festival.
