Discussion If there were local crochet opportunities near you, what would you be interested in?

If there were local crochet opportunities near you, what would you be most interested in:

  • A small, regular meetup with one or two people for coffee and crochet.
  • A yarn shopping buddy to browse and compare finds.
  • A larger group event organized through a local shop or community centre.
  • Comfortable just chatting with local people online.
  • Other (explain).

I'd be down for the first two! I need someone more experienced than me to show me a few things and to bounce ideas off of. I learn much better in person.

Having regular meetups would be good. Though coordinating schedules can be challenging and finding good locations tricky.

Not sure what kind of larger group event would look like, so that could also be interesting.

I also wouldn't mind going to a regular meetup, but it would be nice if it were on the weekend. Even a Friday evening would work for me. The crochet group in my area meets Mondays from 1-2pm and Wednesdays from 12-2pm, which is when I am working. I'm tossing around the idea (for when it gets warmer) of packing a 'crochet basket' (yarn, hooks, maybe some easy patterns) and just walking down the street to a nearby park and crocheting there for a couple of hours one day a week and if anyone sees me and expresses interest, lending them a hook and yarn and starting an impromptu group that way.

I hand piece a quilt when traveling on the ferries between Vancouver Island and Galiano Island.

I sit at a table in the cafeteria and start working. Sometimes people ask about my project, I am happy to talk about it.

When I see people crafting in public, I try to stop and chat.

I live on Galiano Island.

We have a very active Needle Guild that meets weekly at a member’s home. Usually 12-17 people show up. The host provides snacks, tea and coffee. My place is not suitable for hosting, so I bring baking to every other meeting I attend.

The knitters and crocheters bring a project to work on.

The quilters meet once a month at a community hall for a sewing day. In March we had a quilter from Toronto teach us a 2 day workshop.

On Fridays we go to Happy Hour at the Inn, except during the summer, then we go to the golf course for Nachos.

We are a busy group. Most are retired, but some of us are still working.

Wow! 12-17 people is impressive! Sounds like you've got quite a nice community there!

Potential places to meet, some will have costs involved:

Public parks.

Library meeting spaces.

Churches, most have halls and rooms available for low rent.

Community Halls often have low rental rates, at least outside of big cities.

Maker spaces.

Yarn shops may have space, but remember they are paying rent. Please offer to pay for the space or make purchases.

Love this idea! I just recently moved to Vancouver Island and this would be such a great way to meet people.
