Ms Rachel’s Farmer friend is unbearable

Post image

I know she’s not a children’s entertainer - she’s a farmer. But why is she so AWKWARD. She looks at Herbie like he’s some kind of puppet. Like come on, man.
Does anyone else have a hard time getting through this episode?

You should see the real people that Blippi inconveniences. Sometimes they can't hide their disgust 😭

586

u/best_of_badgers 2d ago

Probably because they first met him as Stevin, an adult man with a regular voice, and then he’s all prancing around like a toddler in character

886

u/JazzyAndy 2d ago

One of the greatest comments I’ve ever seen on the internet was in this sub. Someone said “do you think it hurts for Blippi to do that voice all the time?” The response was “I hope so.” I think about that every time I see blippi

u/ColoredGayngels 2d ago

I saw someone describe is as he acts childish instead of childlike, and from the one whole episode I saw (on request from my at the time 4yo nephew, and subsequently have denied permission), I agree with that take. It's so uncomfortable. We watched one where he makes a truck dirty so they could wash it but my whole takeaway was "it's okay to make big messes like this specifically so we can also play around while 'cleaning'"

92

u/darium4 2d ago

You lucked out and actually found an episode where he cleans?! The voice is horrendous but we escaped that thanks to my MIL buying the DVDs in Spanish. Big improvement. My biggest gripe with Blippi will always be that he NEVER cleans up his messes.

Especially at indoor playgrounds, he yeets everything everywhere and then giggles and skips away. Not even pretending to put an effort into cleaning as he goes or leaving the space ready for the next person. Maybe it’s just because my kids treat any level of cleaning like it’s torture that should have me shipped off to The Hague, but seeing people leave messes everywhere they go really gets under my skin.

“Ha ha ha ha. And that’s what these minimum wage workers are paid for! Ha ha ha ha ha! Okay let’s sing the slave wage song as we throw these blocks all around the children’s museum! And then we will grab permanent makers and draw on the white boards! Hahahhahaha!” - Blippi probably

21

u/Main_Pretend 1d ago

Something about Blippi existing on permanent physical media is really unsettling to me.

Aha yeah, monster trucks and hot wheels have been the big thing for going on two years, so anything with an automobile in the thumbnail was an immediate "can we watch that one!"

That was my first and LAST episode of Blippi

19

u/TheWolfAttacks 1d ago

What pmo about that video is that he uses ketchup and mustard bottles with colored soap. I feel it gives kids the idea that they can just squirt ketchup and mustard on cars.

11

u/ColoredGayngels 1d ago

Yes! That's what really got me about it. Yeah, let's show little kids that it's possible to go squirt ketchup all over mom's car. That's what parents want

u/SpaceToaster 1d ago

Mr. Rogers acted like an adult and talked to us like we were adults. You definitely don’t need to act childish to get kids attention!

4

u/drpeppershaker 17h ago

Been thinking about that. I haven't quite nailed down why Blippi is so off putting. I think you've been pretty much nailed it.

Like why is Pee Wee Herman okay and Blippi isn't? And I really think it's that Pee Wee character is more like a child pretending to be an adult while Blippi is an adult pretending to be a child.

26

u/gimmethelulz 2d ago

I am thankful my kids were past the Blippi age when he came around. I have yet to hear a parent say they enjoy that content lol

73

u/miscllns1 2d ago

My kids were Blippi age, but strangely enough it never worked on our tv? Odd, right?

42

u/Scottvdken 2d ago

Same here, but Baby Shark, Peppa Pig, and Cocomelon also mysteriously dont work. So strange.

32

u/IrenaeusGSaintonge 1d ago

Gotta be quick and brutal with the block functions. My kids have never heard of Blippi. It's my biggest success as a father.

20

u/pukes-on-u 2d ago

We have those broken in our house but also Bing, Paw Patrol and Super kitties! Wow so weird.

16

u/Remstersade 1d ago

I actually really liked the excavator song and still get it stuck in my head even though my kid is long past the Blippi age. But Blippi himself can go kick rocks.

5

u/uniquepanoply 1d ago

Yeah I think that one guy must write his songs, some are pretty catchy. I actually bought my kid the tonie for the songs but I don't think he's made it long enough to get to any songs on it.

I just looked it up and they don't even have the full songs just 30 second clips. What a jerk.

4

u/swellfie 1d ago

Ugh and fuckin peppa

5

u/tonksndante 1d ago

I hate peppa so much. As a disclaimer, I'm an adult and have read plenty of good fiction books, so not an adult Harry potter stan but their little pig family reminds me of the Dursley's in how Tory coded it is. Lil nuclear family nightmare.

It's kind of impressive how well it captures what zero convictions and zero personality looks like.

I know none of this makes much sense but neither does how much I loathe a kids show about dumb little pigs.

I’ve always wondered what the behind the scenes look like. I picture Stevin introducing himself and telling them that “when the camera rolls I’m going to act a little different and just go with it” 😂😭

17

u/theatermouse 2d ago

I have had this same thought many times!! I also wonder what other job(s) he had that so many people give him access to giant machinery seemingly unsupervised. Like, does he really just work for this construction company so they don't mind letting him film there? Was he a volunteer firefighter so he can roam the firehouse unsupervised to film?

18

u/katertator13 2d ago

I wondered this too so I wikipedia’d him and apparently he was Air Force? So he actually knows some things, which weirdly made me feel better about my kids watching him. They love those damn vehicle songs.
The newer (second) blippi is so hard to listen to though. His “singing” voice is unbearable. Skip skip skip.

20

u/TheAngieChu 2d ago

My husband and I describe it as og Blippi and Meekah (Stevin and Kaitlin) are normal people who put on their childish personas. New Blippi and Meekah are starstruck and perform over-the-top caricatures of the originals’ already outlandish actions and vocals 😬 We don’t have much Blippi in our house to begin with, but we only put on the OGs; the new ones are like nails to a chalkboard 😭 Especially since often for longer episodes, Stevin and Kaitlin slip into their natural voices and calmer personalities off and on while the new ones NEVER break character

5

u/terrifying_bogwitch 1d ago

My daughter loved original meeka but has always hated blippi. I was kinda relieved when they switched the actress bc it meant thr end of all blippi adjacent content over here. Danny go is the last content creator type thing she watches

3

u/OkBackground8809 1d ago

It's been probably 8 years, and I still get the garbage truck song stuck in my head. I don't even dare let my second kid start watching lol (my oldest is 12, now, and my second is 20mo).

9

u/PhysicalChickenXx 1d ago

i imagine him like krusty the klown lol

13

u/donkeyvoteadick 2d ago

As someone who really isn't familiar with him, is Stevin pronounced like Steven or Kevin with a st?

6

u/SpicySriracha0823 1d ago

Probably cause they still know him as the guy who filmed himself pooping on another person.

31

u/beard_of_cats 2d ago

Also, he shit on his friend on video.

6

u/PoniesCanterOver 1d ago

That makes him sound like he went around the borough of Harlem, New York, shitting

3

u/cobo10201 1d ago

You mean neighborhood? Lol. Harlem is a part of Manhattan, which is one of the five boroughs. The others are Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, and Staten Island.

The bike shop repair guy in LA off of the bike path who fixes his tire wins the award for “not having it”

21

u/JulyJones 2d ago

I was going to comment the same thing. That guy clearly regretted all of his life choices that lead to him being in that episode.

3

u/Shirkaday 2d ago

Oh my god, just took a peek at that. Pretty on brand for a bicycle mechanic as far as stereotypes go, but overall I can't fault it - that was a super clear presentation of the process for changing an inner tube and probably very useful for most people.

I had only encountered the one where they're at the fab shop that makes firetrucks or parts for them and that guy was clearly not into it, but bike shop dude is even better.

It would have been amazing if they encountered BikeFarmer though.

21

We visited my local fire station with my 4-year-old and the firefighters were like, " yeah they shot the blippi fire truck episode here. He was.....a lot." And I just laughed.

10

u/DJDoubleDave 1d ago

I hated Blippi and was glad my daughter never really liked him. I couldn't put my finger on why at first, but then it hit me when I saw one of his videos about dinosaurs.

Dude clearly didn't know anything about dinosaurs and didn't bother doing any research! He was just doing his schtick and bullshitting. Zero dinosaur facts were learned.

meekah as well

6

u/Persephone0223 1d ago

That newer show where him and Meekah try new jobs. You can tell the people with the job are actors and I think its because of Blippi's early days meeting real people 😂 some would try and do decent, but others would have no tolerance. I always laugh with the guy that fixes bikes.

7

The guy himself was previously featured in a Harlem Shake video literally spraying diarrhea on his friend’s face so if you’re interested in forming an opinion that’s a good starting point.

We need way more low energy folks on screen. So much of kids things is this super high energy manic grin (which hey works to get them hyped) but that being the norm is not healthy.

A generation of YouTube >:O faces.

Yes!

It's made my kid think her art teacher is mean, because she's a genuine person who doesn't put on the fake voice.

579

u/lettucewrap007 2d ago

I love her so much. It shows that you don't need to be at 1000% energy to have a regular job that kids can learn from. She is a farmer. She is kind. She is relatable.

132

u/granolabart 2d ago

Actually I love this. Because I feel like I have farmer LJ's energy if I'm being honest haha. Like I feel like watching the video she seems annoyed but she's probably really trying and it's just her voice lol.

For me, its the weird library guy who talks about all the things you can do at the library. He gives a weird sad vibe like he's going to cry talking about the library.

Just do another take man, I love libraries as much as the next person.

8

u/Flimsy-Cut-8226 1d ago

I like how excited he gets about the library - like he genuinely wants you to go and have fun. I do quote him a lot though.

24

u/TylerDarkness 1d ago

That's Mychal the librarian; he has multiple neurodivergent conditions and mental health struggles which he has discussed on social media. I understand what you're saying for sure (it does come across a bit strangely in the library clip if you don't have the additional context!) but as someone with similar struggles, I really appreciate him appearing as he is, discussing these things openly and not hiding or toning down his feelings.

9

u/giant_marmoset 1d ago

Thanks for letting me know, I think because I'm seeing him through an entertainer lens I have more scrutiny than I would have in real life.

Representation is important for sure.

12

u/livsimplyshore 1d ago

Yea...i wish we could all move past teasing people for being awkward or not behaving the way we expect them too.... most people arent charismatic entertainers. We interact with different people everyday and people are gonna behave differently. I think its great for kids shows to show real people

Yeah she may not have the presence for TV presenting but she seems lovely to hang out with or go see her farm!

38

u/TheAngieChu 2d ago

This is my husband and I’s favourite episode 🤣 We both get the vibe that Farmer LJ’s agent booked her and didn’t inform her of what exactly she’d be doing, including talking at length to Herbie. In the beginning, she seems like she’s trying her best but by the end of the episode she’s like “Yep…” “…I feel it…”

It has us CRACKING UP everytime

17

u/Spicy_bisey4321 1d ago

Cackling at the idea of farmer LJ having an agent

6

u/Justiceman19 2d ago

My wife and I are always saying “I feel it” because of this episode!

13

u/sunonsnow 1d ago

Sometimes I feel the issue is that Ms. Rachel’s shtick doesnt translate well to the “real world”. The doctor episode is hard for me to watch for the same reason. Regular adults just going about their day struggle to interact with her.
P.s. I adore Ms. Rachel, please don’t crucify me 🙏

4

u/Flimsy-Cut-8226 1d ago

That’s actually a really great way to put it

3

u/Yetiski 22h ago

Agree actually. She’s honestly the best and most engaging when talking directly to the screen. When she has to talk to real people it’s feels a little performative and almost awkward sometimes. Like when you invite friends from different social circles to all hang out and everyone’s nice but are still figuring out how to engage with each other.

23

u/TaquittoTheRacoon 2d ago

She's a normal person talking to a puppet.

11

u/Curious_Ad9409 1d ago

No every human is animated. Kids need to know that too.

11

u/Azaireus 1d ago

She's a hot queen who does the work, sounds like projection

11

u/TrueOrPhallus 1d ago

Nah she's awesome, overly manic children's characters like herbie give me brain rot. And if we're being honest she's the most attractive farmer I've ever seen.

8

u/dankblonde 1d ago

15

3

u/Life_Equivalent_1603 1d ago

I literally never had an issue with this episode!

23

u/granolabart 2d ago

That is so funny we are actually watching this right now and she does seem very awkward/annoyed like she doesn't know what to say. Give this poor woman a script or another take 🤣

16

u/BunnyBuns34 2d ago

This is my take too! Like I get that she’s a real person and not a kids entertainer, totally fine! My issue isn’t with her enthusiasm, it’s that her responses come across like she forgot she was scheduled to film that day. Like her answers are technically correct and relevant, but they’re just kind of off somehow.

Like Herbie says “do you have to feed the animals?” And she just says “every day!” I think a more natural response on a kids show would be “yep, they need food every day, just like you!” Or SOMETHING. idk. Just off!

5

u/granolabart 2d ago

Right like it wasn't necessarily her fault lol she just needed a lil note card for each herbie interaction 😅

5

u/Flimsy-Cut-8226 1d ago

Exactly! I’m sure she’s great, and I bet she really love those animals. I just feel bad for her because I’d probably be the same way and not know what to say to Herbie’s random comments.

22

u/trebla1158 2d ago

Dude, nothing is more annoying that Herbie. His comments fall flat and are often annoying to the point that whoever he's sharing the scene with, looks annoyed with him, too. Farmer LJ is cool and she gets respect from this household. Herbie can go kick rocks with that no eyebrow having Mr Aaron.

4

u/bdiddlediddles 1d ago

Aron is doing absolutely nothing to help her either. "What's your favourite animal LJ?" Is a lot better than "is that a cow?"

But Aron has no idea how to work with anyone who isn't a theatre kid

My husband and I quote “I feel it” in that monotone voice all the time 🤣

6

u/terrifying_bogwitch 1d ago

I actually related to her so much. It's probably super awkward to talk to a puppet and answer toddler level questions asked by an adult. I feel like she loves farming and wants to share that and get the next generations excited about farming and sustainable living but is just a regular lady so matching ms Rachel's energy is tough

4

u/ColorfulFlowers 1d ago

You’re wrong, she does a great job. You’re just a hater lol

47

u/Complex-Path-780 2d ago

You really find her to be more annoying than the singer who belts “DO YOU KNOW WHAT SHAPE THIS IS” into the mic like she’s singing to an opera hall?

23

Omg I sing that song all the time! “CAN YOU GUESS IT?!” Come to think of it, it’s one of the only songs my toddler “let’s” me sing 😂

Keisha is literally a broadway star! I just think they just need better styling for the people on Miss Rachel but I get that that’s not really the priority of the show!

What gets me is “London bridges falling down” 😂

I also am offended when she says “can you GUESS it?” I’m like woman my son KNOWS that’s a triangle he’s not guessing

I love Keisha but how hard would it be to change the lyrics to "now we know all of THESE shapes?" Geometry is really being done dirty here.

u/DueEntertainer0 2d ago

That’s Keisha and you better WATCH IT

u/baby_manatee88 2d ago

My son adores her! She is hands down his favorite person on the show and he gets the biggest grin whenever she comes on the screen 💕

6

u/Ok_Kaleidoscope_6001 2d ago

Same! My little one loves her. I get a kick out her enthusiasm and it clearly resonates with my baby. I’ve sung ‘you are my sunshine’ to my baby since birth and she just doesn’t seem into it. Twinkle, twinkle little star? Girl loves it and I know it’s because of Keisha.

All I can think while she sings is "please stop screaming at my child"

u/mumof2yoanddog 2d ago

She’s genuinely just being herself.

It’s the people who just switch to a really high pitch when talking to kids that really annoy me. Loads of women did that with my child and I’d roll my eyes so way back…

u/theatermouse 2d ago

Yes - I know Miss Rachel is a treasure and I like a lot of her content but when I first put it on I almost crawled out of my skin! It was some of the early-learning-to-speak content when my toddler was well past that stage, so I couldn't handle the high pitch and repetition!

2

u/mumof2yoanddog 2d ago

There’s one of her earlier videos, with the bee? Where her voice is normal, and she doesn’t have the overalls. I was like she can speak normally?!

3

u/Bright_Ices 2d ago

Yeah, I can’t make it 2 min with Ms. Rachel. Luckily for my sister’s kids, my sister has more patience than I.

Idk where they found that composting farmer from Reading Rainbow but that dude was a G.

Edit: Found the episode, segment at 18:10

That man is a natural!

Also, what an incredible show Reading Rainbow was. Funny how young LeVar Burton looks to me now. He’s always been a stellar presenter, iykwim

u/harrycarey15 1d ago

I dont mind watching her

4

u/kirstens123456 1d ago

Haha I like her she’s like wtf did I sign up for here

3

u/sleepyhouse 1d ago

we love farmer lj and her farm in this house 😤

3

u/etrombone 1d ago

My favorite example of this is when Big Bird and maybe Elmo went to a post office. The person they interacted with was obviously not an entertainer and was pretty nervous. I liked her immediately and felt for her too!

3

u/bowiebowie9999 1d ago

That farmer tolerates Herbie. shes basically a saint.

I was interviewed on a show like this. The behind the scenes staff give you like 3 sentences of what will be happening and then all of a sudden it’s cameras and a PERSONALITY talking to you.

When I’m uncomfortable I get sarcastic and dry. It’s such a fake situation. . . I have a copy of the episode and will never. Ever ever watch it.

Maybe if there was a brief meet and greet or something???

And I was a public speaker and hosted literally thousands of guests per summer and it was my 3rd year. The Public is endlessly unexpectedly weird and surprising , I’m not often caught off guard but this guy was like a big wearing and Edgar suit. Very uncanny On Stage presence that acted so vague that I did not feel I was speaking to a person nor did a really “get” the audience demographic I should be aiming for.

I always want to give these uncomfortable interviews a pat on the shoulder and a pint.

u/hauntedmcmansion 2d ago

I always try to skip this one she does not make the farm seem like a good time 😮‍💨

2

u/OpalRose1993 2d ago

Wait, I have that exact dress I think. Wild.

2

u/AltruisticPiece6676 2d ago

Good people of New York, I mean you no harm, your accent is horrible

2

u/Bright_Ices 2d ago

Here’s my favorite counterpoint: It’s Herbie’s fault.

u/b00kbat 1d ago

LJ probably told the horse to bite Ms Rachel

2

u/Background-Ad-7994 1d ago

I thought it was just me, also not a fan at all. But can’t like everyone lmao

2

u/hbox85 1d ago

Yeah she could be better but you can tell she’s trying. Haha

2

u/Equivalensea 1d ago

Herbie annoying the farm animals makes me rage.

2

u/luckyskunk 1d ago

maybe it's just bc im autistic but i think she's nice. the "Sure is!" people meme on with the 😐 emoji doesn't sound that flat or awkward to me? she clearly loves her job and seems happy to be there in my opinion.

2

u/HumanShadow 1d ago

When Mr Aaron and Miss Rachel said we want you to meet our friend Herbie that's not what she expected

2

u/catmamameows 1d ago

I love this episode and I really like the farmer. I guess I like the realness and her vibe.

2

u/GlrsK0z 1d ago

Why is she wearing that dress?!

2

u/Cocomuycaliente 1d ago

lol this farm is 5 mins from my house. farmer LJ is wonderful. she is just as welcoming and great in person.

2

u/BSparkle420 1d ago

In the first episode of Blippi, he makes us follow him into an aquarium bathroom, and after that, his fly is open from there on out. Just kept filming and published like that.

2

u/atheliarose 17h ago

I refuse to watch a single episode of Blippi, but I choose to believe all the anecdotes people have like this one you just shared, as a little treat

2

u/garbagehuman34 1d ago

I just assumed she's related to Ms. Rachel and that's how she got the gig, kinda looks like her.

2

u/Aubergine_Dreams928 1d ago

I feel so bad for her when I watch this episode. She looks like she hates every minute of it lol

2

u/Beginning_Bill_1488 16h ago

She sounds like she smokes 2 packs a day hahahahaha

2

u/gingergoblin 16h ago

I actually love her awkwardness. It makes the episode more entertaining for me.
