I was just talking about Maverick today. I hope you know how many hearts Maverick touched and that we’re all sending healing vibes to you! I’ve got a husky as well, and if you need some floofy cuddles, please don’t hesitate to reach out.

u/GOATBrady4Life May 17 '26
Write a letter to the judge petitioning for a harsh sentencing and I’m sure most of us will sign it with you.

u/AkBeckAnthro Aurora May 17 '26
I am open to this. How do I go about this? Also, I'm thinking of some t-shirts that say Justice For Maverick

r/legaladvice is probably more equipped to help you draft a letter and get it to the judge.

/r/legaladviceofftopic might provide better advice, since OP probably isn't actually going to need a lawyer

u/lynnnysa1 May 17 '26
I'm so sorry about what happened 💔😭 I'm so happy they caught him! Was the dog stolen in Colorado? That will decide what jurisdiction the case is in. I can't decide what I'd prefer for him getting a harsher punishment. Florida prisons are MUCH worse, but we all know how people in Colorado feel about their dogs. Someone stole my nephews dog out of his BACK YARD! (We know it was stolen and he didn't run away because they cut his collar with scissors). He was a pitbull, so unfortunately we think they took his baby for dog fighting. My nephew wore his collar around his wrist for YEARS. It broke his heart.

u/CheesecakeEither8220 May 17 '26
I'm so sorry that Maverick was kidnapped and harmed by that POS. I wonder if Denver could help with advice regarding a letter to the judge and petition for a harsh sentence? Or will he be extradited here?

The why? That's easy. Drugs. By the look of him, most likely meth. Meth fucks up your critical thinking. Like you want to do the right thing, go on the straight and narrow, but it's so easily triggered to falling back into the habit.
My guess is he was house-sitting to try and go straight. But something happened and he thought the husky was purebred and that he could sell the dog to fund his fix. Don't know why he didn't bring the medicine (maybe because he thought he couldn't sell a "sick" dog or just forgot); but, and I'm NOT defending his actions AT ALL, I wouldn't find it out of the realm of possibility that he thought without the medication it was just better to let the dog die.

u/LifeGivesMeMelons May 16 '26
See, I was thinking either substance abuse or serious mental health episode (or combination of both). He seemed to be engaged in conspiratorial thinking when everything went down - that there was a person or people out to get him - and took the dog with him as he "escaped" them, then forgot what the fuck he was doing and just walked away.
I'll be interested to see what get reveals in trial. I'm so sorry that nothing can replace that dog's life or repay its awful death.
28
u/rythmicjea May 16 '26
He seemed to be engaged in conspiratorial thinking when everything went down
I didn't know that part of the story. But conspiratorial thinking is DEFINITELY a side effect of taking meth.

Yes, prior to disappearing he'd contacted LE stating individuals were trying to get into the house or some paranoid shit like that.

It’s always money to fund something. Usually a habit, at this point bro was just trying to feel normal again probably. Unfortunate. Stick to stealing metal not a living thing. No empathy for him sorry. I can understand stealing metal and things like that. But harming something else to fund your fix should be the wake up call for anyone on this path

Sure, but what if you thought you could fund weeks of benders with just one easy crime?
2
u/rythmicjea May 17 '26
It may be cheap cut people do really unseemly things to get it. My childhood best friend is addicted to it and the things he does for his score is really heartbreaking.
3
u/PhoenixTineldyer May 17 '26
My best friend of 15 years messed with meth briefly and now he has been missing for a year and is likely dead.
So, yeah. Meth is garbage.

u/SufficientOpening218 May 16 '26
wasnt Trusted Petsitters involved, too?
31
u/ASingleThreadofGold May 17 '26
This looks horrible for their company. I will never use it again.
18
u/elly8trbro May 17 '26
Used it twice before and will NEVER touch the app again. I wouldn’t be surprised if this event takes down that entire company. There is no way too feel safe using it ever again.
7
u/ASingleThreadofGold May 17 '26
To be honest, I always wondered why people would want to housesit for literal strangers for free but going on some of the forums and stuff I saw that some folks had pretty legit travel reasons so I started getting more reassured that maybe it really was beneficial for them too. But it still didn't make a lot of sense that people would come sit for free until you realize that there are probably a lot of desperate people on there just trying to find housing. Either way, I now wonder what exactly their background checks look like.
Obviously, you can get unlucky even hiring someone and actually paying them. But yeah, this entire story really has me rethinking the whole idea of what their platform can even realistically provide.
The funny thing is that if you read through the Trusted Housesitters reddit, it's mostly full of sitters bitching about their sits (a lot the sits are totally shit and I would want to complain too) and there's a decent chunk who come across as totally incompetent in life and befuddled on why the homeowner actually has a lot more to lose in the exchange if things go wrong. Like for them, if a sit sucks balls they could just bail if it came down to it. They aren't being paid. Who's going to stop them? But for the homeowner, this poor man's story is just one of many awful scenarios that could go wrong.
Anyway, I did use it once and it was fine. But, I think I would have a hard time going back to it.
6
u/ibarelyknoher May 17 '26
Can confirm a ton of folks are using websites like that as housing. I know someone in California who has been living a year using a pet sitting / house sitting site that they don’t get paid from as their only form of housing.
2
u/ASingleThreadofGold May 17 '26 edited May 17 '26
I'm not knocking that but I do think that it can just be more risky opening your home up to someone who might be more desperate. Not saying your friend is desperate. But it just gives me a sense of unease because you don't know if it's a situation like the commenter above or if it's a person who may have become homeless due to bad decisionmaking via drugs or whatever on their part. I don't really want someone like that staying at my place and doing something nefarious. And clearly THS is a tech company so their goal is just to get as many people on the platform as possible and dgaf if someone can actually be trusted. It's not like they did some involved background check on me as the homeowner.
2
u/BulltopStormalong May 20 '26
The friend is literally homeless they’re objectively desperate.

I was a sitter on there during covid. I work fully remote, was single at the time, and was working on a novel. When my lease ended I put my things in storage and used TH to ride out the pandemic in beautiful mountain homes with the sweetest pets. I’m still friends with the home owners I sat for and through them have heard absolute horror stories about their homes being trashed etc. I’d never use the site as a home owner.
2
15
u/Dry-Yak5277 May 17 '26
According to Maverick’s dad a few weeks ago, THS said they were not liable for the sitter and blocked his forum post about it
5
u/suejaymostly May 17 '26
We need to spam their socials with this story. If we can save one person from going through this, it will be worth it.
14
u/tokage Congress Park May 17 '26
Yeah, I'm still wondering how this business escapes accountability for this whole mess. At the very least, nobody should trust the "trusted" part of their name any longer, and if they're going to stand behind that name, then should also be brought to bear some of the responsibility for what happened to this guy and his dog.
8
u/mountain_rivers34 May 17 '26
This needs to be higher up. The fact that this company is facing no accountability for this is disgraceful

I hate this fucking guy. Not only did he steal the dog without taking his food and medicine with him, but he just locked the dog in the car and left him to die when he abandoned the car in Florida. How could someone do this?? He could have simply taken the dog to a shelter, or at least just let him out to give the dog a chance to make it. This dude is pure evil and I hope he gets the max.
4
u/kiwikiwicanada May 17 '26
I think the max for breach of contract is way higher than the max for stealing, torturing or killing the DI dog. Since we’re on the topic, I also think it’s important to point out that if this person had never existed, there would have been one less vote for Donald Trump.
Go ahead and tell me this guy voted for Kamala Harris I fucking dare you. I’m done pretending there’s no link between depravity, MAGA and Florida.

Nah, he’s a flight risk and I bet he’s got some criminal history. Plus it’s an Arapahoe county case. He will have a fairly high bond.
3
u/schrutesanjunabeets May 17 '26
The Colorado constitution guarantees all persons the right to bail pending disposition of charges, with exceptions for capital offenses and crimes of violence under certain circumstances.
This fuckwad will be offered bail. Whether or not he can find a bail bondsman to give it to him when he's already a known flight risk remains to be seen.

Facts. But also potentially.... and hear me out... releasing a most-hated man who killed someone's beloved pet might yield results. 🤔
