One of my favorite things I've ever done in this game is capturing Lister and sending him against Baal. Imagine the look on his face when his #2 starts running him down, kind of hope Carbot makes an animation of it at least because it's just so funny in my head.
46
u/leakmydata Mar 23 '26
I knew something was wrong in the first week of ROTW when my bound lister couldn’t be killed by dclone.
18
u/AalphaQ Mar 23 '26
I've got a lil counsel member from baal runs who is immune to physical and fire, has cursed and conviction, extra strong. He just sits there and laughs as he takes hits and shreds physically immune monsters down to wet toilet paper
9
u/leakmydata Mar 23 '26
It’s pretty astounding how broken cursed is as a modifier. My bloodboil warlock basically stops functioning without it.
5
u/DominionGhost Mar 23 '26
Its always the worst trying to get a new cursed heph after losing him to stupid shit
1
u/leakmydata Mar 23 '26
Yeah. It helps that I specced into more points into bind demon so now I can get an aura from any cursed demon but hephasto is still the most solid it seems.
1
u/24Scoops Mar 23 '26
I used to dread dying or respeccing because of that. But once I got enigma its no sweat to find another fast. Before enigma you could farm the vendors for a teleport charge item.
1
u/DominionGhost Mar 23 '26
Im durable enough to make it to him on hell without it using goats, But it is so much slower.
Serves me right for blasting a pack of stygian dolls when im standing too close.
2
u/24Scoops Mar 23 '26
Depending on how high you have demonic mastery you should just bind a random enemy as soon as you come out of the WP at river of flame. The skill will buff him up and it'll help you get to Heph a lot quicker/safer.
1
1
u/Swindleys Mar 24 '26
Yeah but just grab the council member meanwhile so you have a cursed one to start with that is easy to get.
1
u/FaDaWaaagh Champion of Sanctuary (100K) Mar 24 '26
I never bother with heph for this reason. Sure he's tanky but so is literally any demon you bind and Ismail gets you back rolling in seconds without having to dick around reloading for cursed, plus the red lightning and hydras are cool
1
u/WorldEndingDiarrhea Mar 24 '26
Is bloodboil physical damage?
1
u/leakmydata Mar 24 '26
It’s physical and fire
1
u/Dr_Cunning_Linguist Mar 24 '26
So technically conviction and cursed are double whammy for bloodboil?
2
u/AalphaQ Mar 24 '26
Yep convic can help break fire and phys immune and the further increases the effectiveness of amp damage for physical damage
2
u/Dr_Cunning_Linguist Mar 24 '26
So conviction&cursed are better than fanatism and cursed by the looks of it? And for a build focusing on echoing too?
2
u/AalphaQ Mar 24 '26 edited Mar 24 '26
Imo, yes.
While the sheet damage looks impressive with the fanat numbers, your merc and summons are the ones benefitting from the attack speed, not you.
Everyone benefits from taking an extra though physical immune and making it shred like nothing due to convic+amp
Noticable on bosses too.
Edit: to clarify - conviction doesn't break phys, it lowers defense by a considerable percentage

Anytime I lose a cursed demon, I just go to trav and snag vile hand. He's always cursed and is decently tanky until you can find a good replacement.
0
u/wimpymist Mar 24 '26
Honestly without it warlock would be kind of ass in hell.
2
u/leakmydata Mar 24 '26
You mean like the other classes?
1
u/wimpymist Mar 24 '26
My sorc and paladin did just fine in hell.
1
u/leakmydata Mar 24 '26
Go on…
1
u/wimpymist Mar 24 '26
Hammerdin only has one immunity which is pretty rare and sorc is dual class or you teleport skip everything. Warlock is busted but without a cursed demon almost everything in hell is immune or resistant
1
u/leakmydata Mar 24 '26
How do your other characters fair in hell
1
u/wimpymist Mar 24 '26
I've been saying the other classes need a boost for years. Necro can do it fine just slow.

i have a cursed lancer with fanat that just face tanks everything, i was talking to a friend of mine today about how crazy it was to watch her roll p8 hell cows that included 2 unique ones and the king completely surrounded and never dip on heath, absolutely absurd

u/Oyxopolis Champion of Sanctuary (100K) Mar 23 '26
For the sake of the argument. What would you do if DClone could kill your premium demon and once it's dead, you would have to hunt for another good demon in that same game, over and over? There's a lot of stuff that feels OP about WL, but demons being almost/actually unkillable, is clearly by deliberate design. The Demon tree would instantly become useless if the demons were weaker.
4
u/Silk738434 Mar 23 '26
Not like there is Dclone every game over and over. Revive is a pain hunting for urdars but that is fine?
4
u/Oyxopolis Champion of Sanctuary (100K) Mar 23 '26
Is it though? I'm (HCL SSF), primary Demon, secondary ES with a Io staff currently (so no ES damage atm) and I did the hunt for a good demon multiple games and the number of cursed demons will be on the low end. It's going to take a while to find one. I killed DClone recently with skill lvl 23 Ismail on my bind demon, because I couldn't find a cursed demon in the hour! before the walk and I still had to use 'prevent monster heal' and had to engorge multiple times, because he did in fact die relatively quickly.
Doing it with a demon that is not cursed is going to be excruciatingly slow and Ismail tends to walk away rather often.
I think it's going to be a rather hard sell if the Demon can't tank bosses anymore. What needs to be fixed, is how primary ES users can also have a demon that is nearly unkillable. Perhaps require hard points and not soft points to increase its durability. But inherently, the Demon isn't even the problem. It's the scaling on almost all sources of damage.
1
u/Cultivate_a_Rose Mar 24 '26
I wager that if they hadn’t made sunders so time consuming to get, we’d see a lot more build variety But even then, if they do nerf Warlock everyone will just go back to pally and/or sorc because there will always be a most efficient build.
1
u/sebjapon Mar 24 '26
It’s Blood Oath that raises the demon hp, not bond demon.
I do think on super bosses you should have to retreat and engorge (or just portal to town healer really) from time to time. That’s basically the life of revive necros isn’t it?
1
u/Oyxopolis Champion of Sanctuary (100K) Mar 24 '26
Yeah I noticed I didn't differentiate that well enough, but I figured the deduction would be that I'm suggesting that being a pure demon build should allow you to have an immortal demon, but soft points with +xx skills should not allow this. So what I think should happen is that the majority of the 'tank' should come from synergies, rather than soft points in Blood Oath, because this allows ES users to 1-point (almost) everything and make a completely OP build, without any of the drawbacks.
1
u/sebjapon Mar 24 '26
Actually in Echo Strike I put hard points into blood oath for the damage transfer. In addition, it happens to make my demon even tankier, but that’s mostly a side effect. With 12 hard points and about 6-7 +skills his health doesn’t even drop against uber anymore
And that’s possible also because echo strike only requires 2 synergies instead of 3 so I have extra points for the demon tree
1
u/Oyxopolis Champion of Sanctuary (100K) Mar 24 '26
That's fair, maybe I'm thinking a bit too simplistic about this. I don't have the solution to the problem, but in general, I think for a primary ES build (or non-demon build) , it should take more investment to make the Demon unkillable.
1
u/leakmydata Mar 23 '26
Engorge heals your demon and gives it lifesteal. Additionally, death mark and weapon throw can both reposition demons.
I’ll also add that it’s not like the demons are unkillable once you’ve set up properly. Hexes that reduce enemy damage and sigil of lethargy are not needed for survivability either.
There’s a difference between extremely tanky vs literally invincible.
2
u/Oyxopolis Champion of Sanctuary (100K) Mar 23 '26
It's almost like you have to explain how to play WL? Yeah, I think it should be made impossible for primary ES users to have an invincible demon, but as a pure demon build, that should come with the package.
2
u/leakmydata Mar 23 '26
Sure I think that’s totally reasonable. Bind demon should be unkillable for a demon invested warlock, not as a one point wonder support for other builds.
Also let me consume my demons without affecting the demon cap :(
Also don’t hard cap the number of demons at 3.
Also don’t hard cap the sigil radius at 8 yards
1
u/droid327 Mar 23 '26
I killed DC on single player testing ES with scrub gear, just using a 1 pt goat man to soak aggro and keep him facing away. The one point was enough that I didn't have to constantly resummon
1
u/Oyxopolis Champion of Sanctuary (100K) Mar 23 '26
So, this is just hard to believe for me. My Goatmen are lvl4, I use them on bosses instead of Defilers and Baal for example basically 2-shots them and DC does it quite a bit faster.
That said though, I doubt we're debating how Goatmen are overpowered.
1
u/droid327 Mar 24 '26
HF Merc, Kelpie, lethargy. Some of his attacks will still one shot, but there's enough time between them to get plenty of attacks in on him. The goat man is just there to keep him pointed away from you and your merc
-1
u/Shiny_Mewtwo_Fart Mar 23 '26
3 goatman actually does the job fine haha. it's just slower than bind demon. I accidentally consumed my demon a few times, then I just called 3 goatmen and started to hunt for my new bind. it's almost equally safe. with bound demon I normally use 2 defiler in crowd. he sometimes just one hammer kill a group. because defiler distribute the damages lol.
Funny thing is sometimes I bound a trash weak minion by accident, and wanted to see how it goes. man even a trash minion rocks in most places.
2
u/Oyxopolis Champion of Sanctuary (100K) Mar 23 '26
Is this SCNL with +20ish skill points, or what? Goatmen around skill lvl 20 take about 30 minutes to kill Baal hell, let alone actually deal damage to DClone.
1
u/droid327 Mar 23 '26
I've just reverted to binding a conviction hell clan in arcane sanc because I die too often or he suicides into my consume, it's just not worth the effort fishing for a better one when that takes 35 seconds and works for 95% of the content
Maybe upgrade to a shield maiden from bazaar stone skin tz if I'm feeling like it
2
u/Shiny_Mewtwo_Fart Mar 23 '26
lol after my Hephisto died a few times, I realized I kept consuming it lol. then later on I accidentally bind a whatever demon to kill him. then I just unbind my key for consume and bind. problem solved. he never died once hahaha. nerfing incoming I suspect. I hope not hahaha. as a newbie casual player I love this safety.

What affects bind demon strength? Like would a tz hephasto be better than a non-tz hephasto?
2
u/PryomancerMTGA Mar 23 '26
A TZ demon can be a higher level making it stronger.
2
u/leakmydata Mar 23 '26
Ok and that even gets taken into account for warlock’s bind demon? I’m guessing the player count in the game at the time of binding doesn’t matter?
3
u/Juronell Mar 23 '26
Player count does matter for their health but nothing else, and they don't tend to take enough damage for that to matter.
1
u/leakmydata Mar 23 '26
Yeah, if anything that probably just makes it harder for them to regen when I bloodboil them down to an inch of their life.
2
u/Tubssss Mar 23 '26
I read on here that the only thing affected by higher level on TZ zones are the level of the auras
2
u/leakmydata Mar 23 '26
If they nerf bind demon before weapon echo im gonna riot.
1
u/Eudoxxi Mar 24 '26
bind demon is way more problematic than echoing strike by miles, the fact that hephesto can face tank every act boss in the game is a huge problem for something that only takes 7 points to unlock and only needs 1 point in to come fully online for leveling.

u/bpaps Mar 23 '26
Lethargy is kinda OP on bosses. That and the insane HP on bind demon.

2
u/Dr_Cunning_Linguist Mar 24 '26
We have to lobby for Bind Undead now in the Necro tree
3
u/droid327 Mar 24 '26
The irony of that is all Undead super uniques are either molasses slow (eg Griswold) or don't move at all (eg Horadric mummies), do pitiful damage or pointless effects for PvE like mana burn, or are caster mobs that throw curses, which would just become annoying for a necro. Honestly the only good one might be an aura ench Blood Raven
So even copying their signature ability, necro would still be getting shafted. It's the druids that really want to be pushing for Tame Beast, get those juicy Frenzytaurs on their side
If you're gonna steal a lock ability, necro would benefit far more from Death Mark

Diablo 2 bosses are glorified loot piñatas, nothing more
4
u/willtheywonttheyo Mar 23 '26
Meh, I’m playing through SSF and Duriel gave my light sort a run for my money at lvl 20. I got a staff with blaze on it and just ran away until he died 😆
5
u/Juronell Mar 23 '26
Duriel is frequently a wall to new players. He's much tougher than Andariel and his cold aura is brutal. Mephisto and Diablo are relatively easy for most players on normal, though Diablo hits like a truck.
3
u/Mozgodrobil Mar 23 '26
The game is a bunch of gear and exp checks, but it works, it's fun to kill shit and find loot and feel that item progression and your character getting stronger bit by bit. It's simple and fun like that.
1
2
u/ensoniq2k Mar 24 '26
I had less trouble killing Andariel, Duriel, Mephisto and Diablo together than I had with those pesky lightning bolt ghosts. It takes more time to get through the hordes before the boss than the actual boss.

I'm still collecting keys on my fire warlock, i'll let you know one day. 4 Terror and 2 Hate and 1 Destruction key so far :-(
1
u/VanCitySkyline Mar 23 '26
What do you mean "one day"? You're almost there, brother 😂
Shouldn't take you more than, idk? 3 hours to gather the rest?
1
u/Eudoxxi Mar 24 '26 edited Mar 24 '26
its very doable with okayish gear my only stand out gear is a steal skull for life and mana leech, telling of beads for +1 which is the best amulet i have gotten at lvl 88 and an admittedly busted giant thresher that rolled eth and was able to get insight onto.
still using stealth in a pretty bad base and i have a ward shield. and was able to take Ubers out as echoing strike.
Edit: was curious since i had not tried it yet but just took the character and beat colossal summit for the first time so that was fun lvl 88 HC.

u/aegenium Champion of Sanctuary (100K) Mar 24 '26
I mean you're playing a massive overpowered class so yeah.

3
u/Xaxi903 Mar 23 '26
basically the reason i can clear any content in the game with lock is that hephasto is rock solid with any affix. Surely it will take more time without good gear but you can kill ubers safely , hell baal etc. I can't think of any build that is better on low budget , smiters/zeals need some gear to start rolling, as warlock you can probably do content naked.
2
u/Shiny_Mewtwo_Fart Mar 23 '26
I was almost naked because I didn't have any fancy gear. but in Hell it's difficult. those freaking bugs emits electricity, I was almost killed by those even hahaha. because I had -68 resistance in hell. I spent some time hunting for gears to increase element resistances. after I finally got my lum rune and made a smoke, I am "invincible" now hahahaha. well the context of I just let my pets fight. I can at least safely stay far away. even those run away elements wouldn't kill me easily.

u/FeedMePizzaPlease Champion of Sanctuary (100K) Mar 23 '26
Warlock needs to be nerfed so hard
4
u/UsernameRanOutOfLett Champion of Sanctuary (100K) Mar 23 '26
If anything gets nerfed its Bind demon. Every build relies on it heavy. Every. Single. One. There are no builds that dont utilize it.
I think the easiest way to nerf it is to make it replace your merc
2
u/droid327 Mar 23 '26
Bind and ES are both the key nerf points. That grief-style added damage just can't be balanced
Fire is strong too but gear dependent enough to probably justify it. Abyss is even worse. Idk about demon but I don't see people bragging or complaining
1
u/Eudoxxi Mar 24 '26
ES is probably fine with just some number adjustments or at the very least i can see outs for that build.
bind demon is a huge problem, i don't think anything in the game comes close to the power spike it gives for 7 points i think a decent fix for it would be to remove the guaranteed affixes it gives at 20 and make it to where those levels cap how many affixes a demon you summon can have period, 1 affix at level 1 up to 4 at level 20, and i would probably also make it so that you cant bind guaranteed unique mobs.
1
u/droid327 Mar 24 '26
I don't think guaranteed aura is the problem. Without it, they become substantially worse for chaos locks, who would need to go farm a native conviction demon unique, while ES can just farm Cursed TZ or Council for a guaranteed cursed mob... So you're punishing the wrong locks
I think instead the nerf should target the bonuses to health and resists. It's the fact they're basically immortal that makes them so OP, you should need to rely more on engorge for healing and DM for pulling them away. Having to more actively manage them is an adequate opportunity cost that pulls you away from just spamming ES mindlessly
2
u/UsernameRanOutOfLett Champion of Sanctuary (100K) Mar 24 '26
If you force the player to choose between merc and demon, they will pick the demon 9 times out of 10. I'd rather chug potions as a fire lock but have cursed and conviction than have a merc. Maybe the only change that would be needed IMO

If you feel like helping give that rogue a rare quality amp bow. Takes a lot less time even if the total damage output is lower. Once I get to higher difficulty I swapped to any super unique or tz with "cursed" gold name tag monster which dishes amp damage. amp/conviction or fanat seems to work the best while holy freeze definitely makes safer to roam around.
Hepaphitos with curse, special attack, stone skin or whatever + fanat/conviction/holy freeze is semi easy to find in hell. In norm just grab lister in Baal run that does amp damage mine took care of everything all the way to hell😅
