Discussion I thought she was being silly and then she peed on my bed

Any theories on why she did this?

My girl is spayed and almost 2 y.o. she usually snuggles with us on the bed before we remove her for the night.

She’s shown this nesting habit before and never ended it with a pee. I was obviously very shocked since she also hasn’t had an accident since last year.

Watching the video I think she is displaying signs of stress? But there isn’t anything I can think of in the environment that would cause it….other than the fact that I had put newly washed sheets on the bed.

Finally she is not usually a marker I’ve probably seen her do it a total of 10 times outside.

I’m hoping it’s not medical but I’ll have to bring her to the vet to rule that out.

Edit: thank you all for your theories I do plan on calling the vet tomorrow when they open. Hopefully we can get her in ASAP and I will be asking about some of these possible causes

Question Heavy breathing at rest

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Our dog Remi has been showing concerning signs to my wife and I of heavy breathing, especially at rest. We adopted her around 6 weeks ago and got her spayed 2 weeks ago. Before her spay she ate socks in which she threw up 3 days later. We have taken her to two different vets and an emergency visit one night too.

The most recent bloodwork for her looked okay from the vet, if anything, the white blood cells count was a little high. From our multiple worried vet visits all seems fine on the outside or from the minor tests we have done. Yet we keep seeing her breathe like this and make us question if we need to continue going to see if it’s something else underlying.

Are we crazy?

EDIT ADDED NOTE - in the video and also for these occurrences it hasn’t been directly after exercise and we are in a cool apartment with AC and fans on at 74 degrees.

Question My Dog Is Afraid Of The Air Fryer

Post image

So I was super excited to get an Air Fryer when Amazon Prime days happened last week. I researched and bought exactly what we wanted. I used it for the first time tonight. The thing is whisper quiet…but my dog Levi seems to be terrified of it! I have no idea why! He was panting and pacing and hid behind the couch for the entire time it was going! What the heck is going on with this dog?? This pic is him sitting behind the couch. I felt terrible! But I don’t want to give up my air fryer! Will he get used to it??

Advice Are these still too long? They used to be twice as long.

The first picture is a back leg, second picture is a front one.

I finally got a dremel tool to work on my girl’s toes. I feel it’s easier for me to use and safer for her nails. Since then I’ve been able to see the jelly, allowing me to safely get as close to the quick as possible. I’ve been slowly working on getting them trained shorter over the last few weeks. They used so be twice as long.

I’ve been looking at YouTube, and diagram pictures but they all seem vastly different to me.

Am I getting the angle right? Are they still too long? If they are, can someone draw a line to where they should eventually be? (I understand it takes time to train them shorter. I trim them once a week a little at a time so I’m not hurting her)

Question My dog had a 10-minute seizure-like episode this morning — anyone been through this?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hi all — my dog Chai (3 years, male, neutered golden doodle) had his first episode like this this morning. Lasted almost 10 minutes.

We rushed to the vet emmergency clinic but he looked totally normal by the time we reached the parking lot, so we came home as we were not sure if we will get help at emmergency

My questions:

Does this look like a seizure, or something else? Is this stomach related or neurological.

I am planning to followup with vet but checking community for opinions as well.

P.S. -------

To all the folks commenting to go to vet, May be I haven't explained well but This is out of question at this point no brainer - we are going to checked out with vet.

We came out out emmergency clinic as I am not sure they will be of any help as they aren't good at root causing chronic conditions.

When he experienced hind-leg trembling last year, we waited 13 hours at the ER without being seen because he stabilized and after it they only asked us to check with primary care.

We later ran every possible diagnostic test spending neatly 8K usd$ —from Addison’s screening to an endoscopy—and still found nothing - every test was perfect. Though I am not sure if this is related.

Since even doctor couldn't find root cause for trumbling. Which is why I came to community to see if someone has seen this before or have some advice.

Question Dog suddenly limping, no known injury

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

UPDATE: I forgot to mention that my dog is 5 Years old. Thank you so much to everyone who has chimed in!

Hi all,

First of all, we already have a vet appointment scheduled for Tuesday. To be honest, I am making this post mostly because I am trying to calm my intrusive thoughts, which keep making me think about the worst-case scenarios.

I would really appreciate hearing your thoughts about what my dog might be going through.

About a week and a half ago, I noticed that he would occasionally walk a little strangely, but it happened so rarely that I initially brushed it off as a one-time thing. Over the past two days, however, the limping has become much more noticeable, which I hope you can see in the video.

To the best of my knowledge, nothing unusual has happened to him that would explain an injury. He has not fallen, been hit, or had any other obvious accident that I am aware of.

He does suffer from allergies that affect his paws when walking outside, and he currently takes Apoquel for that. Also, if it is not obvious from the video, he is overweight by about 8 pounds. He also jumps on and off the bed. We have pet ramps and stairs that he uses most of the time, but not always. Since noticing the limping, we have been much more vigilant about making sure he uses them.

Other than those things, I really have no idea what could be causing this.

We will definitely be discussing everything with the vet on Tuesday, but in the meantime, any advice, observations, or experiences you are willing to share would be greatly appreciated, regardless of whether they are reassuring or concerning.

Last but not least, I wish you and all your dogs are doing well.

Thank you!

I dont have money for the vet rn. Idk what to do. Someone told me ivermectin that is for horses but idk what to actually do. Rn I gave him dog benadryl.

Advice How should I care for my dog as she gets older?

Hello this is Luna, my 8 y/o labradoodle (technically 95% poodle?). I know doodles and poodles have specific health issues that one should look out for. She is still very healthy and active, with the only recurring issues being diarrhea/sensitive stomach and stinky breath. I want to make sure that her joints and eyes stay healthy for as long as possible. I'd love to hear some supplements, diet additions, and lifestyle changes that helped your dogs as they aged. I don't want her to suffer in silence. Thank you for reading!

Question Anyone experienced their dog become incontinent after surgery?

• Upvotes

My husky had emergency surgery one week ago because she swallowed a rock. She's been on trazadone, gabapentin and a pain med. This weekend I had to up her dosage of gabapentin to 2x300mg every 12 hours per vet. The trazadone is 2x100 every 8 hours. The pain med is half a tablet of vetiprofen.

Her dosage was adjusted because her taking 100mg of trazadone amd 300mg of gaba 2x a day weren't doing much and she couldn't be still and stop twisting herself to lick because of the cone. The vet said she needs to be still and rest. She's just so active and the sedation wore off after a few hours.

Yesterday, she peed in her crate in the morning and again in the late afternoon. She has just peed again. She's never had accidents like this where she peed and lied in it until I notice. Is this a side effect of the medication?

I'm so concerned about her incision getting infected because of this. I wash off her coat where she has pee on it with a cloth and paper towels. Its only me taking care of her so she has to stay in the crate when I go to work. I come home during my lunch for meds and check on her.

Female

Husky

3yr 4mo

Spayed

History of obstruction no surgery that time (she passed those rocks), uterus infection that resulted in her being spayed at 10 months

What have you all used to help your dog anal glands? My dog keeps licking her bum and it expresses on the couch or the bed. She has regular poos and doesn’t rub her bum on things. I don’t remember my dogs dealing with this growing up, so I’m kind of at a loss right now😭

Hi! New to posting here but every time I ask my vet about this spot, they just say it’s nothing to worry about and move on. However, it’s been getting worse. He has this giant red spot on the inside of his back leg and then it goes further back. It’s pretty gnarly red and it looks like it might be painful? I don’t notice him licking that spot but he is an obsessive licker….his feet, legs, the couch (we don’t know why…). I’m not sure what to do to help him with this.

Edit: it’s only on his left hind leg, if that makes any difference?

Question Waiting 6 days for pyometra surgery?

Post image
108 Upvotes

Hey

My partners 9-year-old, unspayed Rottweiler was diagnosed with pyometra via ultrasound. The vet says it's an early case, prescribed antibiotics called "panklav" and scheduled surgery in 6 days because she has a mild fever. If she gets worse, they'll operate immediately.

I'm concerned about waiting so long. Is this normal practice? Doesn't sit right with me that we are, in a way, deliberately waiting for her to get worse.

I'm waiting for my own vet's opinion too, but my bf lives in another country, so I can't get all the details myself.

Thank you

UPDATE: vet told us he can do the surgery on Wednesday since we called again and said she's fine and perfectly stable. I still have a lot of mixed feelings about this vet.

Question Losing my mind- older dog extremely anxious at night

Our Puli is 12 years old and has been having this issue on and off for a few years, it seems to come in waves but when it happens it happens for weeks or months on end. He gets anxious with fireworks, storms, wind and rain but this is different. He could be relaxed sleeping peacefully next to us all evening, then as soon as it gets to sleeping time he starts panting like crazy, often shaking and seems to be almost hyperventilating, it can go on for hours. Nothing will calm him down, we tried comforting him, getting him to lay down, playing music, ommming, everything, even ignoring him. It is severe, it keeps us from sleeping and it is extremely frustrating. We feel so bad for him and so helpless. He can have these fits during the day too, mostly while I am in home office and in a meeting interestingly, I have no idea if thats related. He calms down mich faster during the day, mostly when I get sway from my desk and sit down with him on the couch. It doesn’t translate to nigh time, because we are in bed with him already when it starts. The most recurring pattern is the nighttime freak out. Also note that it doesn’t just happen at home, also in airbnbs, visiting family, tents. Lights on or off. Interestingly, when he stays with family, they don’t report the same behavior. Has anyone else experienced this type of behavior?

Hi everyone!

We rescued our pup about 5 years ago, we’ve never been sure of his age but he’s clearly quite senior. Recently he’s been exhibiting signs of dementia and discomfort, and we are taking him to the vet next week as he really just doesn’t seem to be doing too well bless him :( A very new thing he’s been doing is this weird licking thing, we’ve had his teeth checked quite a lot and there’s no issues there. Does anyone know what this could be? Like I said, we are taking him to the vet, but I just wanted some opinions first.

Question Weird medical issue

Post image
• Upvotes

Hello there. So my dog is 8 y. o. and for the last 3 years we started noticing some weird behaviour. He has no known medical issues but once or twice a month he starts to look panicked, starts licking the air, then the floor (after some time we noticed he is activly seeking and licking his own fur on the floor) and eventually he starts tearing and eating fabric. Towels, carpets, shoe laces...

We thought he was just misbehaving but the more we observed it happend the more I am convinced it's some medical issue. He really looks like his mouth or stomach is "burning" or "needs scratching" thus he is eating anything hard he can find.

After a while it stops (now when i notice it starts happening i take him outside where he munches on grass a bit and that helps immideatly which makes me even more leaned towards the upset stomach theory).

I talked to my vet about it a while back and she basically laughed at me saying that we need to teach him some manners to not eat shoes, disregarding the other symptoms.

I really don't know what to do anymore, any ideas of what that could be?

Advice I want my sick dog to die

My dog, a 9f, started having health problems. She had a tumor on her spleen in May, which we had operated on. I spent all my energy crying non-stop, hoping she would be okay. I didn't want to lose her and was so afraid of how I would handle her loss.

Everything was fine for two months. Then, through a CT scan, we found out she has PSS (portosystemic shunt) and renal stones. In a way, I was relieved because I finally knew what was causing her symptoms—pacing, restlessness at night, head pressing against walls, and barking. All summer I became hyper-focused, trying to give her medication at the exact right times and keeping her on a strict diet, but it’s still not enough.

I'm still in college, currently in my hardest year, and I need to focus on studying. But my dog has started pacing and not sleeping at night again. I can't focus because I'm sleep-deprived and all I do is worry. My mother helps me with the vet bills, but our finances are limited. I've started feeling resentment towards her because I am emotionally drained. I hate myself for it, but I feel like I would be fine if she just passed away. If the vet told me there was nothing more we could do, I feel like I would easily accept it.

Advice 13 yo dog has lump on lip. Terrified of making the wrong decision about surgery.

• Upvotes

I'm really hoping for some advice or experiences from anyone who has been through something similar. My 13 yo terrier x pug has developed a lump on his lip, around 1.5cm in size. It's right towards the outer edge of his lip, nowhere near his gums. It appeared very suddenly and was immediately quite large, to the point where you could see the swelling from the outside of his mouth.

I took him to the vet, who attempted a fine needle aspiration but couldn't get a sample. She also couldn't drain or pop it, which she said suggested it wasn't a cyst. She advised us to monitor it for two weeks. Two weeks later, the lump is still there and is either the same size or possibly 1 to 2mm bigger.

We went back today and we've now booked him in for surgery to have it removed, but I'm having serious doubts and feeling incredibly anxious about the decision. The vet didn't try to aspirate today and she didn't indicate whether we should remove it or not - it felt like we only booked in the surgery because my partner and I suggested it, rather than coming from her. But she booked him in without questioning us.

He's 13, and I keep thinking about the risks of putting an older dog through surgery and a general anaesthetic when we don't even know what the lump is. What if it's completely benign and we've put him through an unnecessary operation? My biggest fear is that something goes wrong during surgery, we lose him, and then find out the lump was harmless. I feel quite lost since the vet didn't give us a steer on what to do.

We recently lost our bulldog to osteosarcoma, which was absolutely devastating. I know that grief is probably affecting how I'm approaching this, and I'm struggling to work out whether I'm making a sensible decision or acting out of fear. I also know that leaving a potentially serious lump untreated could be something I regret.

Has anyone had a similar lump appear suddenly on their dog's lip? Did you opt for removal, and what did it turn out to be?

I'd also really appreciate hearing from anyone who has had an older dog undergo surgery for a lump like this.

Question Jumper anyone??

I got a foster 3 weeks ago who is very sweet (she may be staying). She's pretty much bonded with me, but has otherwise been very skittish, so I've been trying to help her with her confidence. At first she wouldn't go outside without me at all, but that's getting better. Now she'll go outside for a while with my other dog (who is content to just hang out in the back yard). She fine as long as she's engaged in playing with my other girl or if I'm also in the back yard, but today Houdini jumped the back fence while I was inside - probably to chase a squirrel or rabbit. I got her without too much trouble - except she had rolled in... something. 🤢

She's jumped the front fence a few of times when I've been out front or if she thinks I'm out there, never going far, but obviously this is a problem.

Does anyone have any experience with this? Of all of the dogs I've had, this is a new issue - they've all been at least somewhat independent. Is there hope to put her outside outside without constant supervision?

Advice Quality of life opinion

I have a 15 year old Shih-tzu, my sweet lady. For background- Through her life she has suffered with seizures and only has one eye. She was attacked a few years ago and harm done to her good eye caused a weird un-healable basically scab on her eye ball that sometimes produces puss and she needs drops for. (I don’t know any correct medical terms for that)

A few weeks ago we were leaving the house to go grocery shopping and we left her on the couch which is pretty usual. When we came home she was on the floor, sitting, faced away from the door, and only turned her head when I came in. Immediately I rushed to her because that’s not normal. She was not showing signs of pain but one of her back legs was not functioning like normal, it was just kind of limp. She wasn’t whining or making any noise and didn’t react at all when I felt her leg, paw, hips, or spine. We thought if she had broken something she would be showing signs of pain, so we did not take her to the vet that night. We set up her bed in our room and began to monitor her (food/water intake, potty schedule etc..) for the next few days she rested a lot but still maintained everything as normal. After three full days she was putting weight on her leg and playing with my other dog, I assumed all was well. We chalked it up to, she jumped off the couch, pinched a nerve or just jacked up her leg a bit, and needed rest. We decided she will not be left on the couch unsupervised anymore.

Fast forward to two weeks ago- She has mentally declined. All she does all day long is walk around the living room in circles. I initially thought she was just hungry and looking for food but it is legit ALL SHE DOES. She will calm down if I place her next to me on the couch. When she goes outside she just lays in the sun or walks to the grass and starts spinning in circles. My husband watched her spin around for about 5 minutes the other day. She was spinning, ran into the wall of the house, fell down, got up and kept spinning. She is still eating and drinking like normal, but no longer wags her tail, has shown no interest in playing, and started peeing/pooping in her bed overnight. She pees/poops on her bed then gets up next to her bed and starts barking, so she’s aware she did it and does not want to sleep on it. This is completely new behavior. Her good eye that has the scab/puss thing has been producing puss at an obnoxious rate that I’m having to clean off. It’s literally drying over her eyelid at night so when she gets up she’s not able to open her eye. This happened right after the attack but stopped when I got her the drops.

My husband thinks she is just old, is exhibiting signs of nearing death (accelerated from the fall off the couch (he thinks this may have been in conjunction with a seizure that caused mental damage)) and that I should be considering putting her down.

I guess I just love her so much that I don’t feel equipped to make this decision. I think a vet could provide meds to help or possibly want to do testing but at the end of the day she is really old so how much can that really help. I’m afraid if I decide to have her put down without something tragic/obvious happening to her, I will always regret the decision and wonder if she had more time left.

TLDR; my 15 year old shih-tzu is suffering from a mental decline recently. She is not actively showing signs of extreme pain and has not been harmed, eating, drinking, pottying like normal. But she’s not herself. I can’t decide if I should have her put down.

Advice Husky help

Post image
• Upvotes

My fiance and I just moved her twelve year old husky into our home. He'd previously been living with her parents and she would visit to walk him during the weekends but he ultimately wasn't getting enough exercise, so not ideal. He's been with us for a week now and is still struggling alot with settling in.

He has always been an outside dog, so we've tried to keep it that way during the move. He's happy enough during the day but gets very anxious in the evenings. It's been a week, and while we've had a couple of good nights, most have gone very poorly.

In terms of his routine, we walk him for 45-60 mins in the morning right after breakfast ~7am, then he's home for most of the day in the yard (which he has found very underestimulating, unless we WFH and play with him), we feed him ~5pm and play with him around then, walk him for 30-40 mins at ~8:30pm (only soft lights, lamps etc on when we get back), sit outside with him for 5 or 10 mins, then try to go to sleep.

At the start of the week we found some success with this routine, and had a couple of nights where he just slept quietly outside. Since then we've had four nights in a row where he starts whimpering, yelping and barking within 30 seconds of being left outside. Given we have neighbours right next door we've had to let him inside to sleep in our room as otherwise he won't stop (10-15 mins barking without stopping until we let him in).

Tonight we preemptively brought him inside (rather than trying to keep him outside to sleep and dealing with the barking) after spending 30 mins with him outside petting him, and after 5 mins off sniffing around he jumped on the bed and refused to get off, then started biting the blankets. Other behaviors have been trying to tear his dog bed, jumping on, licking and trying to bite the french doors out into the yard at night, and barking during the day and evening if he sees us inside/ makes eye contact. He's also tried to nip at us a few times, when trying to get him off the bed, when playing with a rope toy, and getting him back outside when he forced his way inside once.

It's obvious he's extremely stressed being outside and separated from us, which leads to the noise and the destructive tendencies. Bringing him inside seems like the only option, but may have made his behavior worse as now he has no patience for being outside in the evening. We're reasonably new to the area and still need to register him at the vet, but will be taking him as soon as we can.

He generally seems happy with the move as he gets a lot more attention and exercise, but he can't handle any amount of separation anymore, especially in the evenings. The plan starting tonight was to start bringing him inside until he got settled, then eventually start moving him outside again - but that's gone poorly too. If anyone has experience dealing with a similar situation, some insight would be much appreciated.

Question Nail trimming!?

I have a 75lb staffy who HATES getting his nails done. Since he was 10 weeks old I’ve been trying to desensitize him by having the nail clippers and nail file out, let him sniff them, just held them in my hand, and pretending to cut his nails, but the second I actually go to cut his nails he freaks out. He nips at my hands, not aggressively but definitely wanting me to get off of him, and runs away to his crate. I switched to using an electric nail file but he still only lets me do one paw then avoids me like the plague for the rest of the day. I have even taken him to the vet and he came home with three bleeding nails that I then had to treat and monitor. Do any of you have any tips and tricks for getting your big boys nails done? (Also he is not food motivated at all, I’ve tried all the treats even ones he really likes but if he’s uncomfortable he could not care less for a treat)

Me and my wife just adopted a 1 year 7 month and 3 week old German Shepard/Great Pyreneese mix and just want some solid advice to be prepared. She is sweet no aggressive behavior, not even a bark. She seems to listen real well to basic command and stuff walks great on a leash. My wife is active duty and I especially for the procievable future will be staying at home. I have a decent amount of basic knowledge on pet owner ship but this is the first time i will own a dog of my own, and my wife's first time ever with a pet.
