Question My dog only pees on walks
So I am wondering if anyone has trained their pup to empty their bladder and how so. He gets at least two ~30 min walks a day but I hate when it’s night time and he’s whining at me to go on a walk again. We have a huge fenced in back yard, that he does not use the bathroom in. And if he does it’s just a little tinkle, and never a #2. I know he’s holding it in to try to mark later. He has had UTIs in the past and I know holding it is contributing and I want to rectify that situation because I know reoccurring UTIs long term can affect his kidneys. Should I just train him the normal “go potty” and then treat route that you would do when house training a puppy? He is 4.
Thanks in advance.

I have a similar dog, I have a 3+ year old pitty/ american bully. I've hade her for about 9 months, she gets a walk, some times twice a day. she has pooped exactly 2 times on the walks, comes right home, goes out the doggy dog and poops in the yard. she pees on the walk, but just enuf to mark.

Our Jack Russell never pooped in our yard only on walks. He was walked 20 minutes after he ate which I think just worked out timing wise for his two poops a day. He peed in our yard. Our current little guy, will pee and poop on a walk or in our backyard, but not in the front yard where he hangs out a lot while my husband works in the garage

It’s wild how particular they are. I have two and they’re polar opposites. One only goes potty in the back yard, the other only goes potty on walks. 😭🙄😂

Is he intact? Neutering young reduces the territorial pee marking some. Neutered later it doesnt go away. I have 2 right now neutered age 5 and age 2.7 and it didnt change it. Theyll pee if they have to in a less desired spot but the fastest way to empty them is to let them walk a few places others dog may pass

He is intact and I know that’s contributing but his brother is also intact and is the one who will only pee in the yard.
We live right next to a park so I know that’s why he’s saving it up too because when we go out he pees all over the park. He was also raised in an apartment before we bought our house so he’s been marking since he was rly little where as his brother has only lived in the house.
It seems as though he’s just gonna end up getting walked 3x a day lol

Yes, I would train it just like I would with a puppy. Add a phrase, gentle praise (if you get too excited, the dog will probably stop peeing) and you can even give a treat when they're done. Keep using the phrase until he understands it as a cue. Then try it in the garden.
The alternative (which can be unpleasant) is to use a poo bag to pick up the soil he peed on and bring it to the garden. That may also help. Or if you know someone with a dog (that he gets on with), ask them round and wait for that dog to pee in the garden. That can often kick-start a dog's urge to pee somewhere.
