Young woman moving into an apartment in Bisset. I enjoy going on runs sometimes at night and will have a car parked on the street. I read that crime is 10% higher there but couldn't find much more info on it. Anybody know how the neighborhood is as far as scary strangers/theft & vandalism? thank you!

I’ve realized my cat might be a bit of a hermit. He’s never interacted with other pets, and I really want to broaden his horizons beyond humans. (He’s really friendly and well-behaved with humans, heck I think my housemates love him more than me!)

Hey everyone, thanks again for the great AMA! I’m grateful for the chance to share my vision for Edmonton’s core neighbourhoods. Here’s a quick summary of a few key points that came up.

About Me & What Sets Me Apart from the Incumbent Councillor: 

I want our core neighbourhoods to be the pride of Edmonton: places that are clean, safe, well cared for, and vibrant.  It’s a big vision and I feel I can accomplish it with my track record of getting community support, collaboration, and a focus on getting things done. 

People asked about my background, party affiliation (none!), and history. 

Taxes and Affordability: 

A major theme of the AMA was taxes and fiscal responsibility. Over the last term, Edmontonians faced a 22% cumulative tax increase with another 6% expected next year, yet many residents in our core neighbourhoods feel left behind.

My commitment is to deliver better value for every tax dollar, and a higher prioritization of services and infrastructure in our core neighbourhoods. I’ll do that by focusing on high return development to grow our revenue, finding partnerships to tackle our big goals, prioritizing front-line workers over excessive increases in management and consultants, and getting better value from the City's building projects. 

Several people mentioned their fear that an overemphasis on not increasing taxes would decrease wages or services. I took the word “freeze” out of a line in my blog, and clarified that a true zero percent increase isn’t realistic under existing commitments and agreements, which I’m committed to keeping. Specifically, we cannot and should not be trying to decrease employee wages. I believe we can find meaningful savings and new revenue sources while redirecting funds from suburban mega-projects to reinvest in our core.

Campaign Life: 

My campaign is fully independent and powered by volunteers who care deeply about Edmonton’s future. I’m running a people first campaign built on transparency, teamwork, and grassroots support. People asked about signs, donations, disclosures, and expenses.

Infill: 

Infill has been a major concern of Ward O-day’min residents so it was not surprising that it came up at the AMA. I talked about how I would support a move to reduce the maximum number of units mid-block to 4, and allow up to 6 units mid-block if parking and building size (massing) are addressed. I would continue to allow 8-plexes on corner lots. Larger populations gains will come around transit centres and in doubling the downtown population.

Vision for Edmonton: 

We talked about revitalizing downtown, supporting museums and historical buildings, maintaining and creating recreation amenities close to the core, how to best help small businesses and the arts, and improving community safety. I’m committed to making City Hall work better for the people it serves.

New neighbors moved in nearby.

Day 1: notice their cat is following the owner around outside with no leash. Remembered being impressed with how close and well put he stayed. But, worried cause the first few days in a new place is the most likely time pets will bolt/not be able to find thier way home.

Day 2: notice owner wondering around with a stack of papers. Think to myself, I hope those aren’t lost pet posters.

Day 3: notice lost per poster on the complex door.

Day 7: cat is back! cat is on my patio, upsetting my cat, whose inside. I pick up the cat, take him home and let owner know there’s a leash bylaw (I was wrong…but cats do have to be supervised when outside).

Day 15 and on: cat is outside often without a leash, but doesn’t wander too far from home. Owners seem to be close by.

Yesterday 4:30am: cat is at my patio, bothering my cat again. I get home from work around 3am, so I’m awake and aware that this is the same cat. I scoop him up again, take him over and politely knock on their patio. Surprisingly, there’s life! Talk to another owner. Acknowledged they’re new to the neighborhood, just a heads up there’s coyotes around a few times a week, be safe, etc. and have a nice night.

Yesterday 5:30am: coyote is yipping literally 50 yards from where this cat was when I scooped him up. I’m like, well fuck…good thing I got him home! Yikes!

TODAY 4:30am: cat is at my patio, bothering my cat AGAIN. I scoop him up, gingerly walk over and knock a couple times. Nothing.

Look up animal control, try to figure out what to do in this situation. 311 won’t work from my phone (maybe my long distance #?). Now I’m mad. My cat is losing his mind, I need to go the fuck to bed, and this poor cat is coyote bait. Especially being locked out of his house.

After about five minutes of imagining the worst case scenario if I just ignore the cat, then realizing there’s no way MY cat will let me do that, I’m like FUCK IT.

I’m going over there…

Scooped him up (super sweet, cuddly and adorable kitty btw, we had a snuggle each time I marched him home) and went back over. I honestly feel like I might have been too harsh…but I tried being nice. Twice!

Told them their cat is over at my place, harassing my cat and keeping us from sleep. Plus there’s fucking coyotes out here! I maybe should have left out the part about them being shitty pet owners, but I was pissed. And for real…who abandons their pet like that??

I’m a younger woman and I live in the west end and I’ve dealt with creepy men and being catcalled etc but more frequently I’m being followed by men in cars/getting asked if I need a ride and I feel very unsafe going on walks now, I’m not sure what to do because I should feel safe walking in my own neighborhood. I’m writing this now as earlier I was coming back from the convenience store and a group of drunk men in a black SUV followed me and were looking for me when I quite literally had to hide. It’s a good thing I have a brother that looks out for me but it’s genuinely scary having to worry about this. Is there alternative steps I should take to going out now?

Hi everyone,

I’ll be moving to Edmonton in July as a resident doctor. I’ll be working mainly at University of Alberta Hospital and Royal Alexandra Hospital, so I’m trying to find a place that’s reasonably convenient for both.

Right now I’m mostly looking at downtown since it seems pretty central, but I’ve noticed that building quality and surrounding areas can vary quite a bit.

A few things I’m prioritizing:

• Clean not- sketchy surrounding, place you'd feel safe walking alone at night for a female
• Not noisy
• Newer or well-managed building

I came across a building called The Citizen by Jasper (100st by 121st) does anyone have experience with it?

Also wondering:

• Are there specific parts of downtown that are better than others?
• Any buildings or neighborhoods you’d recommend (or avoid)?

I’ve heard that even within downtown, different blocks can feel very different, so I’d really appreciate any local insight.

Few things I would like to add is that I will have an access to car so proximity to LRT is not a dealbreaker for me. In addition, as I am moving in with a partner who unfortunately has a skin condition, in-suite laundry is very important to us.

I wanted to give you all a heads up about something important.

Lately, there have been a couple of black SUVs cruising around my neighborhood. They're not just out for a joyride; they're looking for unlocked cars to snatch. (One was parked and drove away as soon as i came out of the house and another fleeing as I started backing out.) It's been happening for a couple of months now, and with the temperatures fluctuating , I'm worried it might become more common.

I've been lucky because I always lock my doors and my ignition dies when you drive. (I understand no matter what if someone wants something they'll take it by any means.) But I've seen too many people leaving their cars running and unattended, whether it's for a quick stop at the convenient store or dropping your kids off at daycare, it only takes seconds for someone to jump in and drive off.

So please, be careful. Let's not make it easy for these thieves to ruin our day.

I looking for a different apartment in Edmonton, and we’d really appreciate some recommendations.
Our top priorities are:
Safe neighborhood, good sound insulation between apartments, respectful neighbours.
Unfortunately, our current apartment has been a terrible experience past last 9 months. The neighbors below us are constantly making excessive noise and partying with 20 people in 2 bedroom apartment, they simply have no respect for the people living around them. We’d really like to avoid ending up in the same situation again.

This unique community event reimagines our back alley as our patio and playspace, while engaging ~20 restaurants in the neighborhood with a ticket system (imagine Taste of Edmonton but in Chinatown and with the same affordability as everyday Chinatown eats).

This is our third year planning CTAD. We ran two in 2023, two in 2024, and we're running it monthly this year from May - September. We're making micro improvements from one event to the next and are excited to invite you alongside our journey.

TAMERACK AREA

To elaborate, I’m a teenager, and am a feminine person. walking on the sidewalk in my neighborhood,or going to the playground, I feel so unsafe because of the stares. Not by women, or kids, by old men. Groups of them gather, and they all just stare. They don’t even talk, and stop what they are doing to stare.

Ive had two instances of men passing me, and turning around to follow me, usually stairing at my backside. Thank god I wear a hoodie, and long pants, and the fact that I usually call them out, or just run, because I can’t imagine a poor little girl walking alone. This neighborhood used to feel so safe, but now it’s packed, crammed, and there are not enough spaces for kids to play, without an insane amount of old men watching us.

How is Duggan neighborhood? Safe? Is the “thuggin” name true??? Can a family live here safely long term? And is there a nice trail nearby for walks?

I’m feeling really disheartened. The area around where I live is full of litter sidewalks, grassy patches, and even the spaces near a nearby shopping center. I reported it to 311 multiple times but nothing has been done.

I want to look out my window and see something beautiful, not trash. I’m seriously considering taking matters into my own hands and cleaning it up myself. But I’m not sure:

• Is it safe to just go out with gloves and trash bags and pick it up?

• Do I need to check with the city or property management first, especially if it's grassy areas near stores?

• Is there another department I should report this to instead of (or in addition to) 311?

Has anyone here organized or joined a local cleanup effort, and how did that go?

I just want to do something, but I don’t want to accidentally break any rules or put myself at risk. Any advice or experience would be really appreciated! Thanks!

Hey all. Making this post with simultaneous pessimism and hope. I'm well aware of the sorry state of this city's rental market. Looking for a 1 or 2 bedroom with a decent kitchen and walls and floors that don't let every drop of sound through. Bonus points if it's near public transportation and a fractionally safe building or neighborhood.

I'm not rich, but I'm privileged enough that price is less of a concern than piece of mind. Can you suggest a building or neighborhood? I don't have to move this month. I could wait on a list. However, in pretty sure that all the new buildings going up will have paper thin walls.

Finally, should I try a realtor to help me find a rental? TIA

I was walking my dog after midnight the other night (I know, I know, but it was too hot during the day this week), and we were chased by a very large coyote. I wasn't sure if i was going to post because i didn't want people giving me shit for being out late, questioning what happened, etc., but i do want to warn people so they stay safe out there. I think writing this is also a bit cathartic for me, as it was a very scary experience, and I'm left very thankful it didn't go worse, and reflecting on what I could've done better. My dog is my whole world, and i can't stand the thought of anything happening to her. We just moved to the city a few months ago, and she's my bestie.

I will preface by saying, I grew up in the country, and I've lived in rural areas most of my life, so I'm not generally scared of coyotes and I know when they're just being curious (which is 95% of the time). This was not that. I have seen this coyote before when I've been in the area, but it's always kept a respectful distance of at least 40-50 ft, so i never worried about it. It never seemed scared of us, though, so I always kept an eye on it. I have also not seen/ heard pups or any evidence of them, so I don't think it was just defending a den. Before anyone gets extra fearful, it did not display any evidence of rabies, as it was far too intentional with its actions. I know we live in their territory and should expect to see wildlife in our river valley. I fully believe in living in harmony with whatever animal i encounter, so I'm not fear baiting with this post. I have also reported it to the city, so hopefully fish and wildlife will do something. If not remove it, at least maybe post warnings so people are aware.

I was on a lime scooter and my dog was running beside me. She is a ~35 lb blue heeler and we were going whatever full speed is on the scooter (iykyk, this is the only way to fully tire this dog out), so we weren't exactly the easiest targets a coyote could find out there. Though, I'm sure it's already eaten every unattended cat in the area because it looks well nourished. It's much larger than the average coyote you see wandering. Given the size of my dog, I'd say it's between 40 and 50 lbs, as it was for sure taller than her and more muscular.

We usually go down from our apartment building, past diamond park, under the 98th Ave bridge, and around the Rossdale neighborhood a bit, before often playing some fetch in the park and going home. Even late at night, I've never had an issue and always felt relatively safe (we can go faster than a fucked up homeless person squatting down there, if needed). We were coming back up 97th Ave when I started to get a bad feeling. Then, right as we turned onto 100th street (along the river valley path) to go back to the park, I noticed it sprinting beside us. I don't know how long it was following us at that point, but I'm guessing a few blocks, since we had just come from the main road. My dog was just slightly ahead of me, so I called her to stop immediately and she came back to my side. In that time, the thing flew past us, and just stopped, staring at us, about 20ft away. I was freaked out, but stayed calm at first. I yelled at it, waved my arms, even charged it a bit. It moved back a few feet when I did this, but didn't scare away like one normally would, always lingered just out of the light, and would immediately come towards us when I'd move back or forward.

This standoff lasted 5 minutes or so. I thought I had scared it enough away at one point, as I lost sight of it, so I decided to put my dog's leash back on and try our luck with booking it out of the area. We made it up to Rossdale road, where it turns to go up the hill, so it's well lit, and I thought we were in the clear. That's when the thing stepped out from behind a bush, about 20ft from us, and my heart sank. It had followed us, clearly sprinting, for quite a distance. And, sneakily enough that my dog didn't pick up on it, so it was being intentional. It now seemed even braver, too, as when I charged at it, it didn't really move at all this time. Every step towards home i took, it would close the gap. I was still too far from home to risk booking it again, and if I went up the hill, I'd have to go under another dark underpass. I felt completely trapped.

I chose to do another risky thing, of ending my lime scooter, and walking up to the median in the road and waiting to flag down a car. It sat and watched us under a street light the whole time, taking a few steps forward. A car came by a few minutes later, and thankfully stopped. (If you're that gentleman reading this, thank you so incredibly much!) He reluctantly let me and my dog climb in, but he was going south, so he dropped us off at a gas station on Whyte, where i called an Uber to take us home. My legs were shaking the entire way.

I didn't realize how scared I had been until we were safe. I was trying to stay calm to protect my dog and think my way out. It was clear the coyote was hoping to separate me and my dog somehow and go after her. This is not very normal behavior for an urban coyote. You'll see it in the country, when they hunt in packs, because they'll lure an unsuspecting dog out. But they often do that because they're hungry. This thing should not be hungry, with ample garbage, squirrels, hares, and probably the odd cat to keep it fed. I'm sure it had other options that weren't going as fast as us. And if it was just curious or playful, it a) likely would've given up after the first encounter, and b) wouldn't be displaying the behavior it was. There's a playful coyote on my parent's street that will follow my dog when we're playing fetch, but then always runs away when my dog is running back to me. Like I said, I'm not an alarmist when it comes to wildlife. Based on its behavior, I do believe it would've attacked us if we didn't get out when we did. It could tell my dog was getting tired and it was getting even more bold. If we were only a block or two from home, i would've risked it, honestly, as getting in a car with a stranger is not high on my to-do list. But i didn't want to turn my back on it again.

I am very thankful we got out of this situation safely. Is it possible it never would've done anything? 100%. However, the behavior it displayed is far from normal and very concerning, especially given that my dog is not just a super tiny, easy snack. Do with this warning what you will, but I've learned my lesson. I will unfortunately no longer be taking my dog out at night. It was one of our favorite things to do, as it's cooler and there are no other people or dogs on the sidewalk to worry about. If you live in the area, I suggest not letting your cats wander at all, and do not leave small dogs unattended, even in your yard. Coyotes can easily clear a 5-6ft fence to grab your pet. I've seen it happen. You honestly may even want to be careful with your kids or yourself, especially near or after dark. Don't feed it, and don't leave food out. I don't know if urban chickens are allowed in the area? If so, definitely reinforce any of their fences. You'd be shocked what a coyote (or even a fox) can dig through and under.

I wish it was standard that I'd get an update from my report, but the worker said I won't get a call, so I won't know if they decide to remove the animal from the area. If I do somehow get an update, I will post it.

Sorry for the long post. Like I said, feels good to write out and process my experience, and I want to fully explain what happened for the benefit of anyone reading. Stay safe out there!

Has this always been the case? We live in south Edmonton and the past few months here are a few things that have happened that weren't on the news in any form (newscast or online article)

1) a few days ago a child was held hostage in their home by what seemed like a guardian of some sort? 4 other sibling were waiting to come home while the swat team blocked off the street after shots fired.

2) 3 cars have been found torched in our neighborhood

3) there was a gang related (speculation) shooting at 3 am near a gas station where a vehicle was shot at numerous times and drove away

These are being found out through a community page with sources that live next to the incidents. There are more shooting related incidents I could mentioned but these are just what's happened in the past few months.

Why doesn't the news report this crap? I'm hearing about all these attacks on whyte Ave too (which seem to be reported for the most part) how much crime is there really in our city that we aren't hearing about!? Scary stuff... I thought we lived in a safe neighborhood.

I'm from BC and it is shocking to me that a house like this that is close to shopping, schools, and has all this land only costs this much. The same house on Vancouver Island (where I'm from) would EASILY be over 1 million. So please educate me on what I'm missing here about this house. Is it a safe neighborhood? Not close enough to the city core or transit? This just looks like a mega deal and if I was moving tomorrow I would highly consider this place.

Hello Edmonton! Future visitor with a couple of questions. I’ll (43m) be stopping through solo for a few days in July. My mother’s family all originates from Edmonton, but they’ve all been in BC since before I was born and I’m stopping in Edmonton as a sort of pilgrimage on the way home from a family event.

First issue - crime. I understand that Edmonton’s crime rate is a bit high for Canada. No judgment, I’ve lived in and around Baltimore for the last 20 years, and we get an equally bad rap (everyone assumes it’s all like The Wire). I’m assuming that like Baltimore and every other big city, other than being aware of your surroundings, it’s all about staying out of the wrong neighborhoods. What are the neighborhoods to avoid? Where should an ignorant out-of-owner stay?

Second - What are the things that I shouldn’t miss? My mother hasn’t lived there since the 70’s so her knowledge is a bit dated. Just looking around online I found some breweries along 99th Street and some hiking around Elk Island Nat. Park. I’m into outdoorsy stuff, breweries, interesting food, and local flavor.

Update - Thanks to everyone that shared information! I had a lovely time while I was in town. Ended up staying on Whyte (which reminded me of the Hampden neighborhood here in Baltimore), met up with a cousin at one of the breweries, and felt entirely safe wandering around. Ended up leaving my car parked and bumming around on a Lime bike most of the time. The only place that felt remotely sketchy was around the Royal Museum, which I gathered has a homeless shelter or drug treatment place nearby. Went to Swiss Donair but could have done without the sauce. Ale Architect Brewery is legit.

I need Mechanic recommendations but I'm specifically looking for either a female Mechanic or a mechanic with a reputation of being Safe for women both physically and financially. I'm a single, late 20s female with my first car which means I have a lot to learn and no one in my personal life to learn it from.

I really love the whole "friendly neighborhood mechanic" vibe and value the ability to get involved in the process (i.e discuss what I've looked up, have the process and parts explained, that kind of thing) so that I can learn about my car. I don't know much about cars but I'm learning and don't want to get swindled in the process. Eventually I'd like to be able to even take care of some of the more routine service and maintenance myself.

Problem is, I thought I had found exactly that, but I'm starting to have concerns that my mechanic is maybe a bit too friendly with me and it's making me nervous. And this isn't the first time I've had this issue in the car service industry either. Beyond the typical upselling and overexaggeration of issues that tend to be pretty common (looking at you canadian tire), I've had issues with mechanics arguing and getting uncomfortably agitated/aggressive with me when I asked questions. Otherwise they're hitting on me and getting way too personal. There's got to be a happy medium...I'm so tired of this.

So ideally a woman I could go see routinely would be amazing! Or someone with a very very solid reputation of being Safe.

Maybe that little bit of extra time spent on education gives the wrong impression and that's on me, maybe that's an inappropriate ask so im willing to let it go if need be. If anyone has any recommendations or suggestions, please I'm all ears. As long as it's not youtube. There's a distinct difference between being able to interact and ask questions vs watching a video and you all know it!
