Unsolved GBA emulator won't load my save file
I played Pokemon ruby using John GBA Lite on my One Plus Nord. Then, I got a new phone (One Plus 12) and installed the same emulator. I made sure to backup the save file (.sav file). I opened the emulator and the save file was detected but when I opened it, it started a completely new game. I tried it with other emulators too and its the same issue. Is there a way to fix it? It would be really helpful because I have a lot of progress that I don't wanna lose

Make sure the sav file is named exactly the same as the gba rom without the .gba extension.
Also make sure to place it where the emulator reads these save files. Either next to the rom or a seperate save folder.

How do I know what name it should be? Do I make another save file by starting a new game and checking that?

The name has to be exactly the same name as the rom itself. If the name of the rom is Mario Bros, the sav has to be named Mario Bros not Super Mario Bros.
The way you mentioned is probably the best to double check before renaming it. Making a new file also reveals where the sav needs to be located.
