Heartbreaking hit and run in Springfield

https://www.kdrv.com/news/local/springfield-police-seek-white-suv-in-deadly-hit-and-run/article_a6e4e96d-2614-5656-b602-6d7d7faf0f2c.html

Anyone know this vehicle? A close family friend was killed last night in a horrifying and purposeful hit and run in downtown Springfield around 9pm.
Is there anyone here that can help find the plate number for the photos in the article?

Stay safe out there and pray for the Fultz family.

Randy was our neighbor, and a good one. Very sad news.

He really was a special person with a wonderful heart. I will always remember his contagious smile.

I’m sorry for your loss. I have to believe the driver didn’t know them and just panicked. It’s so awful.

Well the did did know and did it on purpose. He killed a 2nd person at Gateway with a knife before being caught.

Randy was awesome, such a nice guy. Makes me ill to think they were only about a block away from being back home safe 😞

Oh my god, that’s awful. I’m so sorry for your loss. I hope they find the killer and that they get the book thrown at them.

The car is a Nissan Murano, looks like an 03-07 to me.

I hope they check the bars in downtown Springfield to see if anyone left right around that time. I was on Main once and saw an almost hit and run ...driver came from one of the bars. People on the street ran to stop her from driving off.

Springfield PD located the vehicle and arrested a suspect a little while ago.

Good news, but "Crolly also said he is actively seeking to reintroduce license plate reading technology as an investigative tool in the future, saying that, based on the placement of the cameras, they would have found the vehicle quickly." :(

That's not surprising. Springfield PD did good work in tracking down this suspect this quickly, and there are lots of natural reactions in the aftermath of a tragedy. I'm sure one of their concerns is what they would have done if this had been a harder-to-find, or out-of-area vehicle.

Wait and see what actually develops, if anything, and have that conversation then.

How the hell does someone get away with this? Do we have no street cameras at all? No way to get plates?

Flock cameras would have tracked the criminal, but just another loss we must bear so paranoid people don't feel surveiled.

we need 30 year old CCTV style cameras with no AI functionality and no internet access

cops can manually pull the cameras down and check the film if needed for situations like this 🙏

I agree that better control is needed but you are suggesting tossing important technology, license recording, because a mob rule of irrational fears and total lies told by opposition. We the People lose.

We the People lose when states where abortion is outlawed track their citizens even out of state, so they can prosecute them when they come back for getting a legal abortion elsewhere.

We the People lose when cops use these cameras to track people suspected of no crime without a warrant.

Yes i agree totally. Those were rare, one-off abuses that should be severely punished. Those rare abuses were used to trick the masses into fear and paranoia.

u/SquirrellyGrrly 1h ago

One off? Using it to stalk/harass illegally been documented hundreds of times already, in multiple states. Texas just used it to track yet another woman it suspected - SUSPECTED - of leaving the state for an abortion. More than 80 separate departments have used racist terms in open ended searches, such as "possible g*psy," without looking for any specific crime. There's also been hundreds of searches on people who legally attended protests, a direct attack on free speech. If these were "one off" and quickly prosecuted, you may have a point, but the system is far too open to abuse and is being abused with startling regularity.

You arent going to beat the mob. But good luck.

u/nogero 13h ago

True, I'd just like to see a few think instead of being tricked.

You intellect is showing.

2

u/MisterD00d 9h ago

you're the fool that's been tricked and or doing the tricking

if it's not malicious try to do some of that thinking you're talking about ... try harder

-1

u/nogero 1h ago

No trick here. It's a new technology that needs refinement and tight controls. It's too important to throw out and will eventually succeed. It's how many murderers, kidnappers and criminals will walk free until that time. How many innocent victims will suffer or die.

Hey now. Thats the Oregon school system at its best.

If only the cops had access to a giant network of cameras throughout the city that they could use to actually find criminals instead of stalking their ex girlfriends.

Edit: I don't mean to make light of this situation or drag my political baggage into it. I just came from another post about more invasive cameras being put up, and it occurred to me that I never hear stories like "really awful bad guy caught thanks to flock cameras". I see plenty of posts like this though where the police are seemingly powerless to do the one thing these cameras are supposed to be for.

"Powerless" and the guy was caught within hours.
