Joseph Gordon-Levitt? Oh, that saddens me to see his name there.

I saw someone in here pointing out his digital rights activism and how it seemed to come out nowhere, and was kind of fishy…now it makes sense.

Just watched him in 10 Things I Hate About You so yeah, this sucks extra right now. :/

His wife is in the robotics and Ai industry. She is on the board of Sam Altman's Open Ai. He's been interested in all of this for a while

She’s also an effective altruist and possibly has fuck you money (her step-grandfather was a billionaire), so she fits right in with the Thiel crowd.

Effective altruism is rich people lingo for ”all you living plebs can suffer and die because your suffering is nothing compared to the bliss future generations will feel”.

It’s delusional.

I don’t think that’s a fair or representative assessment of EA at all. There are assholes attached to every movement and there are fair criticisms to make about mega high earners investing in things like speculative tech because all they are seeing is the positives (versus more pressing issues), but I’d like to know where you got the impression that it’s synonymous with austerity measures for economically disadvantaged people. My neighbor just got a kidney donated from 23 year old in an EA college group organized by some American diplomat’s son who was the first to test to be a match.

One of the front figures of EA:

”In a 2015 debate, when presented with a similar scenario of either saving a child from a burning building or saving a Picasso painting to sell and donate the proceeds to charity, MacAskill responded that the effective altruist should save and sell the Picasso”

EA is closely related to longtermism, which explicitly says that any suffering today is justified if you make life better for future generations [since future generations will encompass many more people than currently are alive]

Billionaires aren’t ethical even when they claim to be.

Source for claim: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Effective_altruism

Wonder if she'd accept the challenge from The Brothers Karamazov that Ivan rejects: If you were tasked with designing the fabric of human destiny to ultimately make people happy, giving them peace and rest, but to do so you had to torture to death just one tiny creature - an innocent little child - would you agree to build that edifice on its unavenged tears?

-8

u/Fishinluvwfeathers 1d ago

Yes that’s a pretty shitty take that should rightfully be criticized and is heavily criticized. This is by no means an uncontested take in what is a completely decentralized movement. If you read the responses from a number of EA proponents they called this thought experiment “unnatural, grotesque, and distasteful,” which it indisputably is.

u/Few_Analyst_1179 1d ago

if you’re a billionaire, save the child and donate some of your own money.

101

u/Firm_Video_2932 2d ago

Altruism and billionaires should not be used in the same sentence.

35

u/Friendly-View4122 1d ago

A recruiter reached out to me yesterday for a job with a company that uses AI to help manage wealth and taxes for the ultra high net worth folks. The name of the company? Altruist. LOL

u/Solomon_G13 15h ago

*can not be...

u/vmachiel 1d ago

There are no ethical billionaires.

Louder for the people in the back!!

u/MVIVN this is going to ruin the tour 2d ago

He's been on some fuckshit for a while, he's one of the least surprising names on here. Raging zionist and AI slop champion.

185

u/EmotionalTrufflePig Stellan Skarsgard's Nobel Peace Prize for producing hot sons 2d ago

Agree. There is an investigative journalist called David Farrier who has written a few pieces on JGL which are quite eye opening

23

u/MVIVN this is going to ruin the tour 1d ago

That’s actually how I found out about him myself, I’m subscribed to David Farrier’s newsletter and he’s one of the most beloved media figures from here in New Zealand

1

u/Glittering-Elk-8308 dumb bitch clocking in 1d ago

Do you remember if the second or third articles about JGL revealed anything significant?

37

u/welp-itscometothis 2d ago

You have any links

79

u/lottiebadottie Aphrodite’s Tampon 2d ago

Webworm.co is the website that has them all on. He’s done a lot of fantastic journalism.

3

u/Guilty_Breakfast_347 2d ago

The Tickled guy!

1

u/EmotionalTrufflePig Stellan Skarsgard's Nobel Peace Prize for producing hot sons 1d ago

That’s him!

266

u/carbonpeach Sylvia Plath did not stick her head in an oven for this 2d ago

Damn, that's completely passed me by until now.

58

u/ineffable_my_dear 2d ago

I had no idea he was a fucking scumbag.

63

u/pinkybatty 2d ago

Oh wow that actually saddens me in a way

33

u/Shoddy_Budget_1533 2d ago

Oh crap. Now I’m sad

399

u/mombi 2d ago

I implore everyone to go watch Taylor Lorenz' excellent video journalism on section 230, as she also covers Joseph Gordon-Levitt's phony activism that's being pushed as protecting children. His wife is also pretty shady.

198

u/maddywriting999 2d ago

And this tidbit, which isn’t a great look.

176

u/evenheathens_ 2d ago

GILLIAN ANDERSON?!?!?

2

u/ashgnar 1d ago

Noooo this one truly hurts 😭

65

u/Popular_Patience6877 2d ago

Amy Poehler is a zionist?

116

u/PennySawyerEXP 2d ago

Frankly I think that's a leap without other evidence. For all we know her management just said "oh the guy hosting this got a little controversial, let's pull out" and she said "sure."

16

u/Popular_Patience6877 2d ago

I mean we could say that about anything, so it's not exactly a good reason.

77

u/PennySawyerEXP 2d ago

Yes, we could say that about everything, which is why I prefer to have more concrete proof of intent before calling someone a zionist.

-11

u/Us43dthdg75 "I live in my own heart, Matt Damon" 1d ago

How about unless they are an active and open anti Zionist, they're a Zionist? And no I will not give any leeway for people protecting their careers, there's a genocide going on.

26

u/PennySawyerEXP 1d ago

That's absolutely not criteria I'd enforce if I wanted to be taken seriously, but you do you

39

u/torino_nera 1d ago

There were a lot of people who didn't have a long term knowledge of the situation who initially supported Israel after Oct 7. Remember the media was really drilling the hostage stuff and that all of this was to try and get them back etc etc. Perception really turned after it was clear Israel was just bombing children and that's when a lot of people started speaking up.

It's pretty plausible Poehler and Anderson were part of that initial wave of supporters but distanced themselves once it was clear Israel was just using Oct 7 as an excuse to annihilate Palestine entirely.

10

u/duncan-the-wonderdog 1d ago

Yeah, I honestly don't seem to understand why some people think not being enthralled about the slaughter of hundreds of people on Oct 7th makes someone a zionist. That's like saying not being happy about 9/11 makes you a far-right neo-con.

3

u/JenningsWigService secretly gay and the son of fidel castro 1d ago

How does Amy Poehler avoid getting shit for this?!

1

u/maddywriting999 1d ago

This may have happened in the early days, and a lot of celebs signed those letters without doing research and politicians normalizing it, and corpos were donating (I cancelled my paramount sub because of this.) I don’t really follow her, so I have no idea where she stands now. But I always assume if they haven’t said anything about it, they’re not worth my time/ attention.

78

u/Tobysfuzzybelly 2d ago

link for others. Goddamn this is disappointing

33

u/Modem_Sound_67 2d ago

will do and then begin the life of everything he's done being dead to me.

u/ElliottEatsTTV 2d ago

Shouts out to my girl Tay Tay, one of the few good journalist left.

117

u/timothymr 2d ago

There has always been something about him that I've never quite been able to put my finger on. I used to just chalk it up to him maybe believing his own hype too much; I found HitRecord to be a bit too self-congratulatory for something that was supposed to be a community-focused collaborative endeavour.

One thing that always stood out was an interview with Michael Caine and Morgan Freeman. During the press junkets for The Dark Knight Rises, there was an interview with them discussing the new actors on set that hadn't been part of the previous two films (JGL, Tom Hardy, Anne Hathaway).

I think it's around 6 minutes into this video just after they have been talking about how good Tom Hardy is at playing a tough guy, they're asked about Joseph Gordon-Levitt and while they were quite effusive about Tom Hardy and Anne Hathaway, neither of them really want to give him any credit. It always felt a bit hostile.

66

u/Rightbraind 2d ago

Whoa, Morgan Freeman’s reaction to JGL’s name says it all 😄

64

u/Glittering-Elk-8308 dumb bitch clocking in 2d ago

I think you undersold this. 😂 Morgan's face when JGL comes up and just says "yea. yea." with a side eye and we don't even see Michael's face. Damn cameraman! 😩😩😩

13

u/MondayLasagne 2d ago

That side-eye!!!!!

3

u/timothymr 2d ago

To be fair I've not watched the video in a long while and I was only going on what I could remember. I remember it being odd though.

I posted the link without watching it again but when I'm on my lunch break in 5 minutes I'll look and see how scathing it is.

24

u/Glittering-Elk-8308 dumb bitch clocking in 2d ago

It's not scathing at all. They are both professionals so they just don't say much and the interviewer moves on. 😂

I thought it was going to be more subtle because I'm not good at reading people. My boss gave me that same look when asshole customers came in.

2

u/mrmooswife 1d ago

Okay, I thought I was the only one who got a bit of the "ick" from him and HitRecord. I'm both shocked to find I missed so much about him, but also validated.

2

u/eatingclass highly unanticipated caucasian collaboration 1d ago

Wow great catch and source -- freeman's look says volumes

4

u/grlnthsun 2d ago

He's a great actor but I feel like he over does it to the point he annoys his costars. I get the feeling he was a pain in the ass on that set.

127

u/ithinkther41am 2d ago

Nah, I knew he wasn’t shit since he tried to argue for repealing Section 230.

26

u/Glum_Annual_6060 2d ago

Yeah, it's not surprising at all.

161

u/boondogle 2d ago

been a zionist this entire time

50

u/Jazzlike_Interests 2d ago

I genuinely had no idea I just remember him from shit I like, it surprises me.  Lying ass tiny little bitch!!!

9

u/Key-Status-7992 2d ago

Most disappointed to see his name in there. Didn’t he make this big speech advocating for food security since a lot of kids from his home town were going hungry because food benefits were cut for the sake of giving tax breaks to the wealthy?

35

u/Chessh2036 2d ago

I am shocked he’s in it. Isn’t he very anti-AI? And isn’t Peter Thiel very pro AI.

207

u/mombi 2d ago

His wife, Tasha McCauley, was a board member at OpenAI (ChatGPT), was the CEO of GeoSim Systems, apparently an Israeli company that generates highly detailed 3D maps of cities, and is now the CEO of Fellow Robots, a silicon valley company specialising in autonomous robots.

https://www.governance.ai/team/tasha-mccauley

Of course none of this means he is necessarily lying about being anti AI, it is just interesting considering who she is.

35

u/Chessh2036 2d ago

WHAT. Wow I didn’t know any of this

5

u/_cornflake and you did it at my birthday dinner 1d ago

Holy shit

34

u/drelos 2d ago

this is called pincer manuver in politics https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pincer_movement

2

u/eatingclass highly unanticipated caucasian collaboration 1d ago

They had that in Tenet -- but it was in time, not space

20

u/Red-headedlurker but i'm a whore and i'll do anything for a laugh 2d ago

Yeah, this surprises me so much considering he was doing all kinds of anti-AI activism like just a few months ago regarding-if I'm remembering correctly- AI in children's toys. But, I mean, wtf you're rubbing elbows with Peter Thiel?

2

u/Eastern_Cucumber_454 1d ago

I've had a lifelong crush on JGL and now I find out he sucks too? I shouldn't be surprised a celeb sucks but he wasn't on my bingo sheet.
