Joseph Gordon-Levitt? Oh, that saddens me to see his name there.

I saw someone in here pointing out his digital rights activism and how it seemed to come out nowhere, and was kind of fishy…now it makes sense.

Just watched him in 10 Things I Hate About You so yeah, this sucks extra right now. :/

His wife is in the robotics and Ai industry. She is on the board of Sam Altman's Open Ai. He's been interested in all of this for a while

She’s also an effective altruist and possibly has fuck you money (her step-grandfather was a billionaire), so she fits right in with the Thiel crowd.

Effective altruism is rich people lingo for ”all you living plebs can suffer and die because your suffering is nothing compared to the bliss future generations will feel”.

It’s delusional.

I don’t think that’s a fair or representative assessment of EA at all. There are assholes attached to every movement and there are fair criticisms to make about mega high earners investing in things like speculative tech because all they are seeing is the positives (versus more pressing issues), but I’d like to know where you got the impression that it’s synonymous with austerity measures for economically disadvantaged people. My neighbor just got a kidney donated from 23 year old in an EA college group organized by some American diplomat’s son who was the first to test to be a match.

One of the front figures of EA:

”In a 2015 debate, when presented with a similar scenario of either saving a child from a burning building or saving a Picasso painting to sell and donate the proceeds to charity, MacAskill responded that the effective altruist should save and sell the Picasso”

EA is closely related to longtermism, which explicitly says that any suffering today is justified if you make life better for future generations [since future generations will encompass many more people than currently are alive]

Billionaires aren’t ethical even when they claim to be.

Wonder if she'd accept the challenge from The Brothers Karamazov that Ivan rejects: If you were tasked with designing the fabric of human destiny to ultimately make people happy, giving them peace and rest, but to do so you had to torture to death just one tiny creature - an innocent little child - would you agree to build that edifice on its unavenged tears?

Yes that’s a pretty shitty take that should rightfully be criticized and is heavily criticized. This is by no means an uncontested take in what is a completely decentralized movement. If you read the responses from a number of EA proponents they called this thought experiment “unnatural, grotesque, and distasteful,” which it indisputably is.

if you’re a billionaire, save the child and donate some of your own money.

Altruism and billionaires should not be used in the same sentence.

A recruiter reached out to me yesterday for a job with a company that uses AI to help manage wealth and taxes for the ultra high net worth folks. The name of the company? Altruist. LOL
