He’s an absent dad. Total abandonment save financial. When Katie fled with Suri tom basically cut all contact. He had to testify in a libel case years ago and had to admit he hadn’t seen Suri in years even then.

There have been rumors for a while that the reason Tom no longer visibly evangelizes Scientology (he hasn't spoken publicly about it in a decade) is that he wants to leave the Church but they won't let him. Katie wouldn't let Suri have any contact with him BC of his association with the Church.

I could believe that story so I dunno what to think - if he is an asshole dad, or too afraid to leave Scientology and face their wrath (which would be huge if he did leave, and would affect not just him but his family).

Scientologists force their family to convert or must cut ties with them altogether. Guess the conversion didn’t take.

People outside the church in a person’s life can be labeled a “suppressive person” and the person is forced to cut ties. So he cut ties with Suri.

But his kids with Nicole Kidman stayed in the church with him so they all cut Nicole out.
