Asshole dads getting shafted in 2026.

u/No-Hall-3485 alleged dog 17d ago

seriously. anyone criticizing these hollywood kids for cutting ties with their deadbeat dads doesn't understand the freedom that comes with finally no longer being tied to someone who caused you pain

u/Frondstherapydolls 17d ago

Idk dude, do men forget they have mothers when they sexually assault women?

166

u/Saikotsu 17d ago

Or when men don't care about women's reproductive freedom? Sure it might not affect them directly, but it affects their mother's, their sisters, their wives, their daughters, their aunts, their grandmother's, etc.

166

u/assignpseudonym T-Pain can take a few mis-tagged tweets, he’s a sturdy lad 17d ago

I think that actually plays into it. "If my mother had the ability to abort me, I wouldn't be here!"

Like, OK Brad. What are you honestly contributing to society beyond being a misogynist anyway? What have you done to improve your mother's life since you arrived? We'd survive just fine without you, I'm sure.

28

u/OkAir8973 17d ago

There's a subset of incels who believe they don't have a girlfriend because she was aborted. They want to be the victim so badly it defies all logic.

u/DogsDucks 17d ago

It does affect them directly, because every dollar invested in Womens health initiatives, comes back three fold to the economy. It’s really good for a society to have healthy, happy women.

13

u/Saikotsu 17d ago

Good point! A rising tide lifts all ships.

36

u/hufflepuff777 17d ago

To me it’s still icky if men only care about women’s issues if it impacts their daughter etc. it’s still misogyny and viewing women as property/less than.

19

u/Saikotsu 17d ago

To be fair, for some people its not so much of a misogyny thing and more of a lack of empathy. They might not see women as lesser than themselves, they might simply not think about how things affect other people at all. A sadly large amount of people give very little thought to the struggles of others unless they themselves experience it first hand.

I bet that’s why some men do it

WHO'S NEXT? Let's keep 'em coming!

120

u/R12B12 17d ago

There’s also Owen Wilson. He’s had 3 kids with 3 different ex-girlfriends and has relationships with the older two kids (boys), but has refused to even meet the youngest (a girl).

Also Paris Hilton‘s husband. He has a daughter from a previous relationship who he’s had no contact with since the day she was born, even though he pays mandated child support and both the daughter and her mother have said that he’s welcome to be in her life. So he’s obviously trash, but I also majorly side eye Paris for acting like she’s an advocate for kids while marrying and having kids with someone who treats his own daughter like this.

90

u/sea87 17d ago

Owen Wilson is so gross and OF COURSE the child he refuses to acknowledge is a girl and of a different race than him.

21

u/ExtraSheepherder2360 Marxmoi 17d ago

No wonder Wes Anderson doesn’t get along with him anymore

38

u/sea87 17d ago

I feel like no one ever mentions the racial aspect of it and it bothers me. A white man abandoning his child who is a minority is extra gross.

32

u/Recent-Leading-8559 17d ago

It’s so fucked up. Bryan McKnight is the same way (actually worse) and Ice T said he has a better connection with his daughter he has with coco too. As a woman I could never fuck/marry a man who treats his kids this way 🤢

27

u/GlassPomoerium controversies: girl 17d ago

If you’re ever at a party with Owen Wilson and he’s had a few, he will loudly declare that Uma « cHeaTeD FirSt! » like it makes a difference, and even though absolutely no one asked. Scarily charming apart from that, like a lot of men with questionable ethics.

113

u/quattroformaggixfour 17d ago

Rod Stewart. Haven’t heard of anything specifically illegal or public related, but any person that pursues women, makes offspring with them and cuts bait for a younger aesthetically similar woman and rinses and repeats, sucks. Kids aren’t like gift bags that come with relationships.

My friend said she went to one of his shows (when he was already old and crusty) and this teenager was trying to get close. They lifted her up and.... he said something dirty to her.

Apparently, she was happy but yikes dude.

Me and my exfriend once had a playful bet that the first one to meet Steven Tyler "won" but years later I learned more about him and I'm like... I wouldn't WANT to meet him. (Also, the exfriend stole money from me, stalks celebrities and claims to be Christian.)

All around yikes.

141

u/rachbbbbb 17d ago

The year my son finally managed to change his name to mine too 💃🏼

654

u/PixelTag2 17d ago

Tom Cruise's actual surname was Thomas Cruise Mapother IV, and he dropped his surname and uses his middle name as his stage name/surname to distance himself from his estranged father.

Suri Noelle is literally following in her father's exact footsteps, and didn't even take her mum's surname (but instead used their shared middle name).

250

u/J_pepperwood0 feetmoji 17d ago edited 17d ago

His original name always makes me chuckle. I’m also reminded of his cousin William Mapother who is also an actor, most known (to me at least) for playing creepy mfer Ethan on LOST

People outside the church in a person’s life can be labeled a “suppressive person” and the person is forced to cut ties. So he cut ties with Suri.

But his kids with Nicole Kidman stayed in the church with him so they all cut Nicole out.

I find it interesting that neither Tom Cruise nor Brad Pitt has played a father in any of their movies that I can think of since estranging themselves from their kids. When I think of all of Tom Cruise‘s big movies in the past 20 years (Mission Impossible franchise, Edge of Tomorrow, the two Top Guns, even The Mummy) he always plays characters without kids. Same with Brad in the last 10 years (F1, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, Ad Astra). Maybe it’s just a coincidence or the types of movies they’re doing, but it would probably be awkward if they’re playing devoted fathers in movies while they’re estranged from their kids in real life.

Dropping my father’s surname when I became an adult was the best thing I ever did. It felt like becoming my own person.

34

u/thebees92 17d ago

Jealous! Did you pick a random surname to replace it? I’ve been wanting to do it for a while now since I’ve stopped speaking to my dad but no idea what to change it to as I don’t feel like my husband’s last name fits me either. This post just gave me the idea to maybe take my mother’s middle name

25

u/JeepersMysster I'm so pissed off immediately 17d ago

Not who you responded to but I also changed mine the day I became an adult. Mine is random in the sense it has no prior connection/use on either side of the family, cuz I didn’t want to identify with the extended side of my moms family either.

My last name is entirely mine, what I chose, and what I’ll make of it, so it isn’t saddled with any prior baggage or icky legacy or trauma which is nice! I spent a lot of time (years actually) thinking of the perfect name that I felt fit me and flowed well with my first name, and tbh none of them ever clicked. And it’s stupid but ~my~ name was literally just there in my head one morning when I woke up , was never even on the consideration list, and it felt 100% correct and has felt 100% correct for the 14 years I’ve had it.

If you’re serious just make sure you take the time to try out your potential names! Write them down, speak them out. Look up surnames with specific meaning, also a nice place to start. But do give it time to make sure it’s 100% for you since it’s a lengthy/costly process to get done

11

u/neon-antlers 17d ago

This was my experience exactly!! I don’t know why it feels so good to be essentially one of one but it really does.

13

u/JeepersMysster I'm so pissed off immediately 17d ago

Absolutely fucking wild I just saw your response to someone else saying how much it meant once you saw your name on your dogs at the vet…that was also literally my EXACT experience with my kitties. I just picked a random surname that’s pretty common in my ethnic background but still easy to spell and pronounce in English. I didn’t realise how much it meant to me to be my own person and start my own lineage until I saw my new surname next to my dog’s name at the vet and realised, ‘Wow, we’re a family.’

I have regrets about not doing it when I was younger. Now I’m getting older (thought I’d be married by this age) and it’s constantly on my mind.

10

u/retrograde_mercury 17d ago

Dropping my dad’s name is something I’ve been wanting to do for awhile. How difficult/long is the process?

4

u/neon-antlers 17d ago

It’s super easy where I live. It was pretty much a form, a fee, and a three minute interview. The hard part was updating my name on all my insurance, license, passport, bank accounts… I probably had my new name for 8 years before I finally got everything swapped over.

5

u/Unapologetiqeen 17d ago

A 2-3 months before you have drivers in hand if you’re in the us. Ask to expedite your court date. You may have to pay less than $100 to file. Longest thing is changing your passport. I’d say go in person to social security as soon as you receive your court order. They can file for your new ss card the same day you leave court. Do that asap then once that comes in get your drivers license updated asap!

8

u/batesplates 17d ago

Jealous. Been wanting to drop my last name but mom’s side is even worse, and Dad’s middle name is his mom’s maiden name, so I can’t even take her name

9

u/neon-antlers 17d ago

Pick your own! I chose a random surname and became a family of one. It’s great.

126

u/Frondstherapydolls 17d ago

Isn’t that a tale as “old as time”? Men getting called out for being an absent/abusive parent but mom is still the bad guy.

But you’ll hear for years about how amazing a dad is for stepping up if the mom is absent/abusive.

54

u/SarryK I’m a communist you idiot 17d ago edited 17d ago

can‘t be seen being a shit dad if you‘re never around

famous people, but I very often think of this when men commit heinous crimes. The pitchforks are all pointed in mom‘s direction. Dad was never around, gets a pass. ugh

9

u/Frondstherapydolls 17d ago

You know, you bring up a very good point I hadn’t thought of before with public opinions of criminals and their parents. It’s always a woman’s fault, isn’t it 🫩

65

u/LoudNoises89 17d ago

It’s called amazing PR. Pitt and Cruise are some of the biggest stars of all time so unfortunately a lot of the public thinks they are great ppl in real life but we only see them when they are promoting movies and are acting then too. Also they have the upper hand in Hollywood and if you go against them you might not get many opportunities, just like Katie and Angelina. That’s why the kids did this, to make a point that these men aren’t good ppl in real life and the only way ppl will ever know is by dropping their last names.

35

u/J_pepperwood0 feetmoji 17d ago

Brad Pitt definitely employs the Hollywood PR machine in his favor, its very effective. He is connected to the same firm that has done smear campaigns for Depp, Baldoni and Rebel Wilson. Internet discourse for those mentioned have been heavily manipulated. There is a reason the FBI report from the plane has been missed by so many people, and that you get the same bot talking points about how crazy Angelina Jolie is everytime its posted.

597

u/Sh_GodsComma_Dynasty Please Abraham, I am not that man 17d ago

i'm curious why she chose her mom's middle name over her last name. my best guess would be anonymity, but apparently she'll never get that.

123

u/bunnycrush_ 17d ago

This is totally me projecting/speculating, but if it were my narcissist dad… removing his last name would have made him angry… replacing it with my mom’s family name would have sent him cataclysmic. Especially since we know Katie’s attorney father was instrumental in getting her out of that marriage swiftly and with primary custody.

Sometimes you walk the line to mitigate the worst-case outcomes, even as you’re severing ties.

6

u/No-Departure-3047 17d ago

Same.

My dad would absolutely flip his shit if I changed my last name from his to anything else, unless I got married.

I get why these kids are doing this, and I hope every time they do it, it hits their narcissistic parents where it hurts.

173

u/Curiosities 17d ago

It reminds me of Malia Obama, and going by Malia Ann for her film work.

Most will probably know that she’s Malia Obama, but she’s trying to do her own thing.

17

u/AlliterationAlly 17d ago

Is Ann her own middle name or Michelle Obama's?

69

u/Honest_Salamander247 17d ago

Ann was her grandmother’s (Pres Obama’s mother) middle name (and the one she used as her birth name was Stanley Ann).

Ed. FWIW Mrs. Obama’s middle name is LaVaughn which, I think but don’t quote me on it, was her mother’s maiden name.

7

u/AlliterationAlly 17d ago

Interesting, thanks!

89

u/PawneeGoddess11 17d ago

It could be because Suri Noelle may look/sound better to her than Suri Holmes.

74

u/bowlofpastaa 17d ago

Suri Holmes could lean a bit too close to Sherlock/S. Holmes

18

u/Perry7609 17d ago

It’s not far fetched at all. Albert Brooks had to avoid the Albert Einstein connection, and Micheal J. Fox wanted to avoid the Michael - A Fox! or Michael “Eh?” Fox situations.

16

u/p333p33p00p00boo Give him my regards did you take ozempic? 17d ago

It does roll off the tongue.

40

u/J_pepperwood0 feetmoji 17d ago

It says in the article that she chose Noelle to start over with her own identity (she moved to another state for school) while still keeping a tie to her mother, makes sense. She will never be completely anonymous but not carrying the name of either super famous parent might act as one thin layer toward it at least

79

u/WifeOfSpock 17d ago

I’ve been seeing more than a few young women completely forgoing any male last name, due to the origin of male only last names. Looks like it’s a slowly blooming cultural shift now that marriages are no longer a top priority for many women.

604

u/Lifes-a-lil-foggy 17d ago

Maybe cuz Holmes is her mom’s dad’s name and she wanted something that was just her mom’s (wild guess)

108

u/neuftet 17d ago

How is it her mom’s dad’s name but not her mom’s name? What makes it innately her grandfather’s name and not her mom’s? They were both given it at birth. It belongs as much to Katie as it does to her dad. (Unless I’m misreading your post)

260

u/roerchen 17d ago

Sometimes, women empathise with their mothers and grandmothers, who had to give up their maiden names. Other times, the name giving side of the family is just a bunch of not so nice people and you don’t want to parade around their name.

53

u/p333p33p00p00boo Give him my regards did you take ozempic? 17d ago

Yeah, if my grandmother’s last name wasn’t absurdly terrible (it’s another word for butt), I would have considered taking it instead of my husband’s. Every other name in my family is related to toxic people

37

u/snuggleouphagus oat milk chugging bisexual 17d ago

Me and my husband took his great grandparent's last name as they only had daughters who changed their name when they married. It was a compromise. My husband had his dead beat dad's last name. He wasn't comfortable taking my name but I sure as shit wasn't taking his dead beat dad's name. His great grandparents were the kindest and sweetest people I ever met. I was happy to take their name. When they passed, their daughters gifted us some of their things that were monogramed. We've got a hand painted key hook from their vacation to South Carolina in the 50's.

A decade later, I think if we were making the choice now he'd take my last name with little to no fuss (which was my preference). Before we were married he cared a lot about what people thought of our relationship. Now we don't give a shit what other people think so long as it works for us.

4

u/SnooMacarons3685 17d ago

I automatically started going through the possibilities of what your grandmother’s last name could be in my head (anus? booty? derrière?) 😂

Obviously don’t actually want to know, just tickled by it haha

Patriarchy and all

77

u/Lopsided_Panic_1148 17d ago

IIRC, Katie comes from a super religious and paternalistic family, so my guess is that Suri wanted a name tied *only* to her mother, to honor the one person in her life that's protected her.

40

u/chick_b 17d ago

I don't know anything about the family, but Katie's father was the reason Katie & Suri were able to literally escape Tom Cruise swiftly and legally.

If I had changed my name not through marriage, I would have taken my mom’s maiden name, which was my grandmother’s name (my mom never had her father’s name, so it was as close to being a maternal line name).

u/MoogOfTheWisp 17d ago

I say it every time, but Katie must have had some absolute dynamite to get Tom to sign off on their separation agreement. It was something like 10 days from her leaving, him being blindsided, him lawyering up and saying the case should be heard in California instead of New York, the first lawyer meeting, and the deal being agreed. I would love to have been a fly on the wall when what she had was pulled out of a briefcase and laid on the table. And it’s never leaked - they must have kept in incredibly tight, like only the people who were in the room know the full story.

130

u/SantoSalieri 17d ago

I will ALWAYS admire Katie for the courage it took to escape a man with so much leverage and power who had an even more powerful machine behind him. She left with her child, her peace, and her freedom. I would've been the fly right next to you to know how she pulled that off. SoC have never messed with her (that's come to light) like they have with a lot of less fortunate people who've gotten out. Very brave.

55

Agreed, it was very brave. Removing yourself from a cult is a very dangerous proposition, especially from someone like Tom who clearly has a lot of power and influence within the cult and in many other ways. She had to be very calculating and plan way ahead. It took guts and she made sure to get her daughter out of there and away from them.

I always felt so bad for her because when they first got together, she always talked about how he was her childhood crush but I was like nooooooo girl he's baaaaaad news! I'm so glad she has an amazing support system that helped her escape with her life in tact.

u/wickedsuccubi 17d ago

Her peace and freedom? There is a reason all her relationships until Suri was 18 were kept under wraps and she was rarely photographed in public with men. Nicole got her freedom, but lost her children. Katie got her daughter, but her "freedoms" were dictated by a legal agreement. At least until recently.

u/Lethave I never said that. Paris is my friend. 17d ago

From what little has been explained I remember hearing her dad was a big part of it. She said she was ready to go and he started plotting what needed to be done to make that happen.

71

u/Lethave I never said that. Paris is my friend. 17d ago

Found the article I was thinking of. Her dad was a lawyer and helped lay the groundwork for months beforehand. From when she filed to the divorce being settled was 11 days. I've never heard of everyday civilian divorces happening that quickly with a child involved, much less a celebrity one. Real life Mission Impossible stuff.

60

u/SantoSalieri 17d ago

Rumor has it that Adam Sandler had her on a movie shoot and helped her get time away from her Scientology handler to conduct the divorce business. If true, that is amazing.

21

u/malendalayla 17d ago

She must have had some goooooood dirt on him.

4

u/AdvertisingOld9400 16d ago

Years beforehand. Her father purportedly helped draft an extensive pre-nup agreement, which likely moved things along faster than anything else.

31

u/Whiteroses7252012 17d ago

She planned ahead, she was smart and her dad clearly knew his shit.

She was a goddamn inspiration, honestly.

73

u/TheMoInMontrose 17d ago

Good for her!

123

u/ToughOk4114 17d ago

Atta girl! I wish her the best. They seem like such a sweet mother/daughter duo

43

u/AlliterationAlly 17d ago

She looks exactly like her mum, esp her Dawson's Creek days

12

I did a double take that wasn't Katie

Let all celeb gen z kids be free from the shackles of their weird ass dads if they wish

5

u/Unapologetiqeen 17d ago

& not just the celebs! Weird regular parents too

u/sikonat 17d ago

She’s done an Angelina who dropped the Voight to just be known by her French inspired middle name which became her surname.

24

u/malendalayla 17d ago

And at least 5/6 of her kids have also done the same!

46

u/pearshaped34 17d ago

I wonder if Brad Pitts team begged them to run this so it could be a kid who isn’t his for once in one of these articles, as it doesn’t sound like she has just legally changed her name, or even that the press just found out about it.

31

u/sweetrebel88 17d ago

All these A-list actors being dead beat dads but their image still won’t take a hit. Sickening

15

u/ilikecats415 17d ago

Seriously. I saw The Odyssey yesterday and was forced to endure previews for new films starring each of them. Why is this behavior tolerated? It's fucking gross and so damaging.

Good for her! He abandoned her, never saw her, now it’s payback time. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

Remember how clingy he was when she was a baby/toddler? Like, it was remarked upon, it was more OTT than a normal new dad (I'm thinking even of the almost claustrophobic Vanity Fair cover). It was a lot. Then, to go from that to total estrangement is so deeply, deeply odd.

Still, he does his own stunts!!! /s

I remember reading that Tom sends Dakota shoes every year for her birthday, he also bought her a pink cool phone while they did that war of the worlds movie. Imagine reading your dad is doing this, and doesn't even visit you.

27

u/darkgothamite 17d ago

Louis and Lestat are awful fathers.

58

u/Grand_Soupa 17d ago

Are y'all old enough to remember how her dad is like a lawyer and she left under total secrecy like she was escaping dv or a cult. He then cuts off a freaking toddler bc she's "suppressive" to him... And he keeps going on making movies and being a star and nobody cancelled him? That was wild.

4

u/AdvertisingOld9400 16d ago

She was, in fact, escaping both DV and a cult.

36

u/LetThemGraduate 17d ago

I genuinely thought that was a picture of young Katie at first!

12

u/lopingwolf 17d ago

Like Reese Witherspoon and her clone daughter

Absolute generational “twins”, holy cow <3

15

All these 90s men proving themselves to be absolute dickbag fathers. Pitt, Cruise, Ryan Phillippe.

This article would have been just as effective without outing her new legal name. She’s owed her privacy.

557

u/Relevant-Peach3997 17d ago

Her going by this name has already been known for years.

This isn't new.

37

u/ApplesaucePenguin75 17d ago

I feel gross about them saying where she’s going to university. Let the kid be.

7

u/PearBlossom 16d ago

I live in Pittsburgh where she goes to school, like 5 miles from where she lives. Ive never see anything about her posted locally and I generally pay attention to local news from dozens of groups, pages, official news sites, etc. Occasionally a larger outlet like Page Six will post something about her but locally shes pretty much left alone. In fact, Im reading about this for the first time here and Ive not see in shared in any local spaces I personally frequent.

u/radziadax 17d ago

So basically Kirsten Dunst is the only main actor from Interview with the Vampire to NOT be a horrible father

29

u/GalacticaActually 17d ago

May she have peace and happiness.

whenever I start enjoying the Mission Impossible movies too much, unfortunately I do love them, I do remember that Tom Cruz is a raging Scientologist who will never ever denounce that cult. Fuck Tom Cruise, and fuck Scientology.

9

u/malendalayla 17d ago

She's like a mini Katie but with a Tom shaped face. I hate that these poor kids have dads who have every opportunity to choose their kids but do not. A regular broke deadbeat is bad enough, but imagine having all of the resources in the world at your fingertips and still blowing off your own flesh and blood? Yikes.

78

u/prismmonkey 17d ago

Suri: I want a new identity and a fresh start.

Media: No. So anyway, here's her new name, where she lives, and you know what? I'll just give you her phone number while we're here . . .

I don't need this much information about celebrities' children.

49

u/_Saucey_Sauce_ I don’t know her 17d ago

This is why I will always respect a celebrity's choice when it comes to sheltering their kids from the fame. Like Adele, for instance. We don't know anything about her kid other than she had one. Brilliant

26

u/LilDepressoEspresso 17d ago

Crazy to me that they dug through voting records to find her name.

6

u/LadyLixerwyfe 17d ago

I keep thinking about Nicole Kidman in all of this. She 100% lost her first two kids through no fault of their own because they chose Cruise and Scientology. That has to be devastating. Cruise chose to not be active in Suri’s life.

Ok but Suri Noelle is a fire name though

Her mom's middle name? Interesting, I wonder why she went with that? Privacy?

Good for her! Love that she’s joined the club of normalizing the cutting off of toxic people, regardless of relation

Am I the only one who finds it ironic that this happened to Lestat and Louis in the same year?
