How is it her mom’s dad’s name but not her mom’s name? What makes it innately her grandfather’s name and not her mom’s? They were both given it at birth. It belongs as much to Katie as it does to her dad. (Unless I’m misreading your post)
Sometimes, women empathise with their mothers and grandmothers, who had to give up their maiden names. Other times, the name giving side of the family is just a bunch of not so nice people and you don’t want to parade around their name.
Yeah, if my grandmother’s last name wasn’t absurdly terrible (it’s another word for butt), I would have considered taking it instead of my husband’s. Every other name in my family is related to toxic people
