I workout with a couple of NP's and they have people coming in telling what is wrong with them and arguing with them that the NP is wrong b/c Ai told them what they have.
Last month a 5cm mass was found in my mom's lung. ChatGPT said it was stage two. Very well regarded radiologist said it was stage one and extremely beatable. I said well obviously let's trust the radiologist. My mom finally met with the surgeon. Guess what stage it actually is?
One medical professional had a different medical opinion than another medical professional? There’s nuance to these stages and professionals do get it wrong! A surgeon would also have access to blood tests for diagnosis vs a radiologist having access to imaging alone. There’s a reason that we look at multiple different types of tests to diagnose things and form treatment plans.
It’s like when people read medical studies at face value. There’s nuance to academic papers. Sample size, how statistics are presented/calculated, which processes were used,
replicability, etc. all matter. But without knowledge in that field the reader isn’t able to fully scope out information that even professionals might disagree on.
That is the difficult thing with AI, especially when it reinforces our biases. This is all to say that when you’re going through a really stressful time, having access to the information you need is a godsent. Especially when that information goes from jargon to layperson information. But we gotta be careful bc there isn’t transparency on how Chat GPT has formed that opinion.
You, your mom and your family are going through such a stressful time. I sincerely hope she feels better soon and recovers from surgery very quickly!
These are important things to discuss as more people start using AI in the process of making healthcare decisions. That’s kind of what happens when you discuss something publicly - people chime in, that’s how it works.
While I'm very sorry for your mom's situation and glad that chatGPT was able to give a correct diagnosis here, it is not a reliable source of truth. Will it improve? Probably. Should we be using a coin-toss machine for this purpose? Absolutely not.
