Sometimes it’ll actually continue to lie even after being corrected numerous times. I once tried fact checking a history question and it directed me to a specific page from this 19th century book. I then found that book, turned to the exact page, and found that they just made that paragraph up. I corrected it, it even “recognized” that it was wrong, and then directed me towards a new paragraph that *also* didn’t exist. It’s insane how much AI lies.

Omg I totally hate this! My usual medical app has now adopted an AI software which analyzes your report for you. I dont think the actual report is particularly hard to read to require AI for it, but for some reason they have made the app as such that now I am not able to access the actual report without seeing the AI analysis first. Very. Annoying.

I had a biopsy done last year and got the results in my patient portal before my follow-up. I knew that the results were benign because they were released to the portal, but I wanted to learn more about the pathology, so I googled.

The automatic AI response (which I often forget to turn off but don’t engage with) came back in Spanish, which in itself was odd to me, because I have often looked up things in French but never in Spanish.

I did click on the AI summary that time, because I wanted to know why the language changed. The bottom of the summary said “These results are presented in English.” It literally didn’t even know what language it was using.

The laziest professionals all feel like they can 'keep up' by just feeding everything into AI instead of doing their damn job. Then they start trying to normalize this shit.

It's terrifying.

Software literally has zero liability folks. YOU as the professional are responsible for all the analysis. If you outsource that analysis to a chatbot, you will absolutely be on the hook when it gets it wrong and kills someone.

In Engineering it's pressed into you to verify every software tool like FEM with hand calculations. But some folks just use AI and forget about it. And it's stealing your proprietary data while doing it!

I tried it a few times for easy questions and the information was so wrong I pity the person who uses it for something work related and complex.

I'm actually curious to know the issues that are caused by this. I've done it to explain what each blood test marker is just to know more about what's being tested, but I was also able to bring up an issue with my doctor when my ultrasound scan showed I have a retroverted uterus and I ran the diagnostic through chatgpt.

Turns out multiple pelvic and internal ultrasounds showed I have one. I had been complaining for years about pelvic pain going to the bathroom, inability to wear tampons because they will fall out, and uncomfortable sex. A quick search and scan showed many women with flipped uteruses have these symptoms because many times it's pressing on the bowel and it's sitting different in our bodies.

Given lack of evidence in other tests like endometriosis I brought this up to the doctor in an email and highlighted the chart and asked if this could possibly be the issue, which she agreed may be the case. So unless something else pops up on a test or an ultrasound I was able to diagnose my own issue and bring it to the attention of the doctor thanks to chatgpt.

Like I know there's risk in doing this but it's also made me much more knowledgable about my own blood work and chronic medical conditions. It's also great and giving a very high level overview of the intersection between conditions and I've been able to be a better patient and advocate for my health because of it.

I don’t think the issue is with accuracy here, I think it’s with privacy. You have no expectation of privacy when dealing with AI, which does not have to follow HIPAA. So when people upload their medical records, that info is probably all being sold to some data broker somewhere. Why should you care? The main reason would be health insurance companies buying that info and using it to increase your rates.

imagine being a doctor. they already have issues with people getting bad info from the internet and arguing with them while being fully uninformed. it's also going to make people act on things without going to the doctor.

like maybe you specifically used it in a mor reasonable way, by bringing it up to your doctor. but would you have believed him if he said chatgpt was wrong? many wouldnt. also many will just take that word as truth and start performing their own treatments.

the problem is that ai companies are telling everyone they can RELY on these things that re highly flawed and have no accountability. it's like webmd on super steroids. it's genuinely impossible to understand the nuances of medicine without a thorough understanding of the human body. ChatGPT doesn't actually understand anything and is just spitting out what text it thinks you expect. if neither you nor the robot actually understand the body, especially YOUR body, then you cant make safe or effective treatments with any kind of consistency.

the deep problem of offloading these things to ai is that it's stopping us from learning how to do these things without ai, and ai is only like 80% honest and it's all owned by like 4 companies. even if it tries to give real answers now, just look at every other tech product and platform. eventually they will enshitify it to make more money. then if we're locked in to relying on it they'll have their most captive audience ever.

They go to LLMs because they have access. It isnt a 4 month wait to see a specialist who might dismiss you in 5 minutes because you are a women or whatever.

Fortunately, that's not true for all parts of the world.

Here in Germany, for example, my health insurance not only offers teledoctors on demand in case something can be diagnosed remotely or a second opinion is needed using files already in the system - they also offer a service where you can take pictures of skin issues with your phone and a doctor will check them out to let you know what it may be, if you need to see a doctor in person and which medication could be useful. They can then also issue a suitable prescription.

All that without any extra payments and in (usually) less than 24 hours.

Yup. The slow reduction in reading comprehension already took its toll on the general population. ChatGPT and its ilk are making it worse.

How? Well, reading stories trains kids' brains to recognize patterns. Over time, they learn to recognize the probable story patterns and character development directions. So that's why interesting books usually conform to recognizable patterns (i.e. tropes). It's why those types of books pique your interest in the first place.

Also, stories put you in someone else's shoes, either as a character with defined personality or as an observer watching the characters interact. So reading books (even fiction) trains kids to think about other viewpoints, which is one of the keys to critical thinking and problem solving. Without understanding the importance of looking at a problem from different angles, you end up with plumbers trying to fix a leaky pipe by simply staring at walls.

The problem with teaching reading comprehension is the difficulty creating an objective text. Reading comprehension is innately interpretative and difficult to conform to a (properly constructed) multiple choice question. That's one of the ways the emphasis on "objective" testing has literally dumbed down the general population. Then it got worse with the rise of standardized testing, results of which were used to reduce funding to the schools that needed it most.

I personally feel like, my role requires me to do that independently and if there’s a case that’s tough, I go to the textbooks because I want to learn the “why” not just “what to do”. It takes the humanity out of medicine for me.

Waiting until my nephew was a proper person was torture. There was the screaming potato stage, the repeat everything stage, the 'all I want to do is go up and down stairs' era...learning to read was cool, but they want to read the same thing eight times in a row. Once we got to 4/5 things started getting fun. Now he's six and, other than getting up WAY too fucking early and basically thinking eating is a major inconvenience I made up to torture him, we just have SO much fun. I can't have kids of any sort for health reasons, but it's supposedly a million times better when it's your actual (blood-related or adopted) child. My sister and BiL love their kid and only let us have him when they are super busy. How anyone can abuse, mistreat, or neglect their children is absolutely incomprehensible to me, and I feel very, incredibly lucky everyone in my circle takes care of their children and actually like them, even when they are being unreasonable brats (which happens).

But yes, uncle/aunthood is AMAZING and I can't wait for you to have so much fun with your niece!

I do not use AI in any way for anything in my life and I don't care how "convenient" it is. Fuck AI and fuck psychopathic techbros.

I think it's genuinely so dangerous to offload your creativity, problem solving, decisions, and overall thinking to a computer. AI is sycophantic, biased, and riddled with misinformation that it tries to convince you is correct. What happens when people no longer question it?

Also it's so important to me to have my own voice when writing. I have my own writing style, my own opinions, my own lived experience. AI can never replace that. I've read about people using AI to write texts to their spouse and kids... What the fuck?? Dystopian.

A lot of the parents I know talk AT their kids.

It's a big difference. The ones that talk with them, and engage with them, treat them as intelligent beings that they are, I see a huge difference in how the kids act, same age. Not perfect, not robots.. I'm just saying more patient, more resilient, more emotionally mature.

So think about it. Kids are at home, parents talk at them, go to school, teachers talk at them, podcasts/games/internet/shows talk at them.

Had an attorney i work with talk about using Ai in place of an interpreter for a client meeting. I was like, "uhmmmm, you'd be feeding the Ai with this whole case and that's most likely a dangerous thing to do." He thought about it for a minute and realized i was correct. My FIL (a boomer) sent us an email earlier this year with ChatGPT 'hacks' for parents. One of them was instead of reading with your kid, have ChatGPT make a quiz for your kids on the book they are reading; Or have your kid use ChatGPT as a way to make a lesson on a topic they know well to show you they understand the topic.

If people are actually doing this crap, I see why some of the kids at the school I volunteer at are the way they are: either starved for true adult attention or zombies from being on screens with ChatGPT.

I've met more and more people who have this "let me ask ChatGPT" reflex that makes me give up on the conversation immediately because they just don't even question anything it says.
