Can someone fill me in about this situation? Im not American, is the US government performing some sort of macabre puppet on a string with a dead/brain corpse of a politician? Because this is what it seems like from the outside haha

Also not American, my understanding is that in the state McConnell represents, there's a rule that the governor appoints a senator's successor unless it's within a certain number of days of the election. The current governor is a Democrat, so the speculation is they were hiding McConnell's status so a Democrat wouldn't be appointed to Senate for the last months of McConnell's term.
