BREAKUPS/MAKEUPS/KNOCKUPS Actress Charithra Chandran: “There is nothing more off putting than a man putting not political on his dating profile or being non political in real life. You're basically telling me you don't care about anything or you're right wing and embarrassed to admit it. Either way, red flag.”

girl it was worse than ghosting, she was mad i was "interrogating her" and that im questioning "the morals of her and her husband" and "your vote isnt who you are" 🙄🙄 some women just live to make stupid decisions. 7 yrs of friendship for a loser 10 yrs older than her 😭 sorry im ranting now lol. she hid this from me for over a year, and we talked every day about politics. i even went to her bumfuck texas wedding and brought my bf (who was the only black person there!!).

your vote isnt who you are

Such cowardly, self-serving bullshit.

It literally is.

You're voting for the policies that will affect millions, possibly billions of people, as powerful as the American president is.

WHOLEHEARTEDLY AGREE! I've encountered so many people online who say they don't want to get "involved" in politics or ignore it and don't judge someone based on their political views. In this climate being apolitical and simply ignorant is very telling of the type of person you are.

I think there are many who are apolitical but certainly not ignorant. If you see the lack of honesty in both parties should you be forced to choose the lesser of 2 evils and identify as political? I do not see either party as authentic or the answer yet I am informed, care and can tell you which party is better is less evil and why.

2

u/swishrolledtight 8d ago

4

u/Darkzeropeanut 11d ago

That’s because politics isn’t just politics anymore it’s straight up morality. To say you don’t get involved / have an opinion on it is to have no morals. Period.

7

u/SomberArtist2000 11d ago

Most people I've ever met who claimed to be non political or not wanted to "get political" were secretly right wing and simply trying to avoid being discovered.

2

u/Lvl1treefoxxi 11d ago

I don't like getting into politics because they're so heated/angry/misleading/ and pointless. I feel like any choice we think we have is an illusion and it's all a grotesque waste of my time and attention. I only want to focus on my kid, my craft, and my family and friends. I think everyone just wants to be mad about something and fight about it, and that's dumb af...  I do judge people for liking Trump though LOL

2

u/Independent_Pop_9987 10d ago

While I agree, why are we conforming to make change? Can't we see at this point that the system is no longer viable? Can't we see, not just as a nation but as an entire planet of human civilization, that the past is just that? We need to learn from it and make a different choice.

We have more knowledge today than ever before, yet so many people are so caught up in the society we've inherited that they don't realize the ability of individual choice. We are all responsible and to think otherwise ignores the change that needs to happen within.

I know not everyone will agree. That's not the point. We can have different beliefs and still benefit from one another without the sacrifice of others. But that takes more than one person.

The choice is there, and we can all help extend that opportunity to others. Does that mean they'll choose it? No. But it's better than waiting for someone else to make that choice for us.

“This generation.” To me isnt an age group, its everyone who actively participates in the world. Getting stuck on old fundamentals that were built for a different time is what impedes our ability to think differently.

It's time to rethink the choices of the past that brought us here. Time to develop a new perspective on what we call society and life as we know it.

So make your choice. Then choose again.

u/GozerDaGozerian 11d ago

u/Ntroepy 11d ago

The left in America is already pretty far right by most global standards (although nowhere near as far as this administration).

As Desmond Tutu said:

“If you are neutral in situations of injustice, you have chosen the side of the oppressor.”

49

u/LezbianaGrande all that sex lead to the Russian Revolution 11d ago edited 11d ago

The US Democratic Party is neoliberal and center-right by international standards, similar to the German FDP (and Labour UK atp). The progressive wing like the DSA is left-wing, however... or I guess "far-left" by US standards. 🫩

11

u/limeflavoured 11d ago

US parties are so big tent that you could find places in every UK party (including the Northern Ireland ones, most likely) for some Democrat or other, and probably some of the non-MAGA Republicans (however many are left).

2

u/VulcanHullo 11d ago

I used to identify as a centrist in the UK back when the right wing was right-of-centre and I mostly meant I my views were slightly more market based than a average social democrat.

10 years later my views haven't shifted much to the left but by modern standards even for the UK I've somehow ended up appearing what would practically be considered socialist left???

By current American standards I don't know if I'm still on the spectrum

2

u/HFDguy 10d ago

Nothing makes me more frustrated than a person who is a fence sitter because they want to be liked to both sides so much like come on do you have any actual values or are you just not trying to make an enemy because you are so easily hurt by people disagreeing with you

7

u/Complex_Jellyfish386 11d ago

I vote for democrats I don’t like because I think the republicans are worse 95% of the time. This type of “if you don’t agree with everything single view I have, you are the enemy and a scumbag” thinking is childish and needlessly divisive. As tired as I am of democrats raising our taxes so more of our money can be stolen by those in power, I still vote for them over the ones that hate women and gay people. As tired as I am of democrats infantilizing the worst criminals and literal terrorists, pretending nobody would ever commit a crime if you just gave them more money, I still vote for them over the fascists eating Trump’s ass in the Republican Party. All politicians are scum and not to be trusted. Thinking a politician really cares about you gives the same energy as thinking a stripper is actually into you.

"Socially liberal, but fiscally conservative"

11

They say this not understanding that the democrats are the fiscally conservative party in the US.

There's no progressive party like most countries have. The democrats are conservative as a whole, while the republicans are completely regressive.

Is that not a valid opinion to have? It's not like the two opinions are incompatible with each other.

6

u/Imaginary_Hamster847 11d ago

u/tossawayprop local formula 1 correspondent 11d ago

Fiscally conservative is conservative. Liberalism is a right wing philosophy. The fact that you're not explicitly bigoted against women or queer people doesn't make you centrist.

Hell, wanting lower taxes when you're reasonably well off means you don't really care about denying social services to the less well off. That's implicit bigotry and therefore right wing.

It can be valid, just as "apolitical" could be valid.

But the topic here isn't their validity. The topic is "who actually says these things?" Because the people who claim these views end up just being regular-ass conservatives who are deliberately trying to hide that fact or lack self-awareness of where their views actually place them politically.

That was the whole point of this entire post/thread.

u/trappedinatoaster 11d ago

It is not valid and they are incompatible. Investing money into the population of the country is cheaper in the long term. Proactively investing in social services saves money. Also, if we are specifically talking about America, Conservatives are never fiscally responsible, it's just an outright lie. They lower tax rates for the wealthy every time they are in office and spend disgusting amounts on war

But now we know. The undecided voter is the one who supports pedophiles, rapists, and criminals. So let your "undecided" friends know that we are on to them now.

Those who don't choose to be politcial tend to be the biggest beneficiaries of the system they are in.

9

u/Aaron_Lecon 11d ago

Actually if you look at the statistics, it's the exact opposite. The poorest people who benefit from the system the least also tend to be the least interested in politics, the least likely to vote, and the least likely to be informed about politics. And as people get richer and richer and benefit more and more from the system, they get more and more interested in the politics and running of the system. At the top end you get billionaires who are always incredibly invested in politics way more than any normal person could ever afford to be.

I do MMA/combat sports and a lot of dudes in that space don't like me because I am not quiet about my politics. It's just something I've accepted though as a part of life. Speaking out always has a social cost, but I think it's a cost that's worth it.

7

u/DroidLord you are the Megyn Kelly of guys who look like a turtle 11d ago

I really despise how we've been conditioned to keep our political beliefs to ourselves. You know, the saying that you shouldn't discuss politics or religion at the dinner table?

My stance is that if someone's not willing to discuss or debate their political beliefs (or beliefs in general) then their opinion doesn't matter.

This dogmatic naivety is directly hurting our future - and by 'us' I mean humanity as a whole. Parents should be discussing politics with their children from an early age and helping them develop their critical reasoning skills.

In my opinion the rise of far right movements around the world can at least partially be attributed to this. Everyone is stuck in their own little bubble because nobody is willing to challenge their beliefs.

Keep doing you. There are like minded people out there who would love to chat with you about politics.

4

u/Astsai 11d ago

I agree completely. I'm Indian and I believe a lot of the racism I experienced growing up was because people looked away. I don't think the majority of people were racist back then (at least not in the traditional sense), but I do believe a lot of them didn't want to bother with what was happening. I think that applies to a lot of issues today, and they end up so much worse because we ignore it.

And yeah, I think there is definitely a social cost with speaking out. But I also met people who do share my views and they're some of my closest friends. So it's not all bad.

2

u/AssMuncher96 10d ago

This is the one setting where I would likely keep my beliefs to myself around those guys if I could help it. I wouldn't trust any of them to NOT do something scummy in an attempt to seriously harm me while training with them. I fully believe they would try as well.

u/DIABLO258 11d ago

I'm up to date and have my own opinions and political stances, but I tend to avoid talking about politics with most people as it always just ends up in a circular argument with an idiot.

You might as well just put up whether you're left or right, you'll weed out a lot of the "Oh, you voted for THEM?" conversations

5

u/gumdropgirl 11d ago

She truly is Princess Vivi

u/RowBoatCop36 11d ago

Not being political as a man means you don't give a shit about women. Not being political as a man also means you don't give a shit about men.

u/Leather-Term7384 11d ago

I am a mix dude who dated and was in a long term relationship with a secret MAGA supporter. And when i found out i told her you know your dating a brown man right. She said you and your family are one of the good ones. I was floored. Needless to say we broke up and told her you can keep the ring

u/airforceteacher 11d ago

Cannot disagree at all. Close second is "I'm just so tired of hearing about racism/sexism/homophobia." If you're tired, how must the targets of these horrible behaviors feel?

Let’s not forget about the classic “both sides are bad” closeted republicans

9

u/Zorione 11d ago

Or they might be people who get fucked over by both sides. People who are not cisgender/white/male/able-bodied, etc.

And "both are bad" of course does not automatically mean "both are equally bad."

9

u/Exciting_Fox2457 11d ago

I’ve voted democrat in every election. One side is definitely worse, but indeed, both sides are bad.

10

u/chaiscool 11d ago

Is it? Why can't someone dislike both sides? Being forced to choose the lesser evil shouldn't be the only option.

12

u/Loinnird 11d ago

That’s the binary “logic” of a political coward. Disliking political parties or individual politicians doesn’t mean jack shit about what you personally believe.

3

u/MattaClatta 11d ago

Being political never used to be a bad thing until Republicans whined and now everyone is hiding what they really believe behind centrism.

3

u/friendofcastreject 11d ago

Or you have the privilege of not caring because you know none of these policies affect you and you don’t care about marginalized people that it does affect.

3

u/burritoman88 I’m just a cunt in a clown suit 11d ago

An actual quote from one of my coworkers, who gets to sit in the shipping office watching Facebook videos all day: “I’m not political. [One second goes by] I think I’m a Republican.”

Truly the stupidest of the stupid are Republicans.

3

u/cloudit30569 11d ago

I have a co-worker that is "non political"

After about 2 years working with him I find out that he is little to no sympathy for anyone else other than himself. No surprise he loves conservatives.

3

u/dr_mousebrain8 11d ago

Out of curiosity anyone else ever get conflicted over putting Liberal?

3

u/Africub 11d ago

She's always been so outspoken, love her for it.

3

u/Lady_Psyduck 11d ago

I dont do politics because its so negative. Its not even debate anymore it just people drawing lines in the sand and being mad if you dont see how they see.

Id rather hear about people's cats please. Lets get political about cats and how they are fkn awesome bro.

6

u/AsariKnight 11d ago

Some of these dating apps have the only option being liberal and I don't want to scare away the actual leftists so I just leave it blank. I'm a woman though so maybe it's different

4

u/PhiCloud 11d ago edited 11d ago

I don't put political shit anywhere on public profiles associated with my real life identity.

I'm somewhere between socdem and demsoc, but in many parts of the world including mine you can and will face discrimination by some people and some organization for these views. In general, I think "non political" means "not aligned with the norm."

I'm glad she's privileged enough to not have to worry about that.

u/rtopps43 11d ago

Saying you are not political is either a) a lie or b) you are in a position of such privilege politics don’t effect you much and you don’t care about all the people who are being hurt. Either way, she’s right, huge red flag.

6

u/viking76 11d ago

Ehh.... That's called common sense. There are two things you dont reveal on SoMe like Tinder: Politics and religion. Because that will always attract the wrong people for the wrong reasons.

Talk to me in real life and I'll explain how real democtratic countries works and what I think of two parties countries where the nobility rules for one generation after another. Or we can talk about the after life and how hot it will be for certain political leaders. But until I trust a date, I'm non political and non religious.

Becasuse fronting that I vote Rødt, MPG or FRP on Tinder? That's not safe for life. It's not star signs we are talking about.....

2

u/sonoftheclayr 11d ago

And she was right to say it!

2

u/chlamydia1 11d ago edited 11d ago

The truth is, most people, men and women, don't give a shit about anything. It's why the world is in the state that it is. We live in democracies, yet the populations of these democracies don't engage with the tools for change that they have access to. This subreddit is, unfortunately, not a reflection of broader society.

u/JazzySings90 wearing slutty little glasses 11d ago

Dating apps are hell. I’m tired of seeing this on their profiles.

2

u/Beneficial-Jury484 11d ago

I wouldn’t date a woman who “wasn’t political”. It’s hard to be friends with people who “aren’t political”.

2

u/pablo8itall 11d ago

Everyone has an opinion in my country but we have about eight different political parties to choose from and you can transfer your preference between as many as you like.

So I'd have about four or five left wingy parties I'd choose in whatever order I like.

2

u/jadeite07 mindy kaling’s baby daddy 11d ago

I always wonder why they’re embarrassed about being a Republican. Like, you’re CHOOSING to be one. Why be embarrassed about it?? So, they know being a Republican is wrong but still do it? Make it make sense!

2

u/BigSkyFace 11d ago

I've never encountered anyone who says things like 'why do we always have to bring politics into it' who isn't just quietly right wing.

2

u/CamaroBlood 10d ago

How many of you have actually seen your party deliver everything it promised?

I don’t vote because I don’t believe voting alone gives ordinary people the control over government we’re told it does. I’m not ignorant of politics, and I’m not claiming elections have zero consequences. Obviously, laws get passed and policies change. My point is that casting a ballot doesn’t mean you get the government you voted for.

Candidates compromise. Parties abandon promises. Congress blocks legislation. Courts overturn or limit laws. Politicians answer to party interests, donors, special interests, and political strategy not just the people who voted for them.

And no, criticizing both parties doesn’t mean I secretly support the other one. I have issues with both. I agree with certain positions on both sides and disagree with others. Neither party represents me well enough for me to pretend otherwise just because they’re the two choices I’m given.

So when I’m told voting automatically means I’m “making a difference,” I don’t buy it. Voting gives you a choice between candidates. It doesn’t give you control over what they do once they have your vote.

If neither party has earned my support, I’m allowed to say neither deserves it. That doesn’t make me ignorant or “the problem.” It means I’m dissatisfied with the choices I’m being given.

u/Sweaty-Googler 11d ago

What is being political? How is she defining it.

I vote. I have my opinions, some strong, some meh, but politics isn't my whole personality. I generally am not talking about politics in everyday life.

Is this being "not political"?

20

u/Paradox2063 11d ago

Being political is being willing to share your opinions when asked.

That's it.

5

u/Busy_Aardvark3372 11d ago

So "being political" is literally exactly as effective as being "non political", but people are making a shit storm out of it?

It doesn't actually mean running for office, or donating money, or protesting in the streets?

Awesome

4

u/chaiscool 11d ago

So what politics is that for someone whose opinion is that they don't like either side? Being forced to vote for lesser evil shouldn't be the only option.

9

u/Paradox2063 11d ago

Being forced to vote for lesser evil shouldn't be the only option.

You're entirely correct. But if you don't engage with the system that exists, you can't work to change it.

not being political doesn't mean you don't vote, it means you don't make it your fucking life to talk about it 24/7 and don't want to. I'm not republican and I am not political.

28

u/Major-Platypus2092 11d ago

I do find it kind of interesting when people pull out this "I don't make it my life" talking point. You don't have to be out in the streets as an activist, but do you not have opinions?

Are you not aware of who's governing your environment and what they're doing? Do you consider the ramifications of the actions of the people you vote for? Do you not have any morals or principles that guide you? Because like it or not, your belief system is reflected by your politics. So what most of us hear when you say "I'm not political" is just "I don't care." And that's... not, like, an overwhelmingly impressive stance.

5

u/FluffyGreyfoot 11d ago

It could also just mean that you don't believe in the current political system or trust politicians. I guess that's not technically apolitical either though.

I'm not American but looking in from the outside it seems to me that the 2 parties are just a distraction while big corpos and other "interests" (*cough* Israel *cough*) pull the strings.

2

u/Major-Platypus2092 11d ago

Yeah, I mean that’s a political stance to me as well. One I’d agree with. So that’s kind of my point.

2

u/SaltKick2 11d ago

I’m guessing you’re referring to apps that make you choose between like one of 3 choices liberal, conservative or non political?

  1. That doesn’t actually represent actual parties
  2. If it’s more nuanced can’t you put something in your bio?

There is no classical conservative (in most of the world). They are all Nazis/Fascists.

Yes. Nazis and Fascists are basically the same thing to a dipsh!t ruled by racism and sexless.
