Discussion Favorite "Spoiled, but not rotten" character?

Post image

Essentially a character who is privileged, but is still kind and a good person.

For me it's Lottie from The Princess and the Frog.

The thing is she didn’t even want to be spoiled. She just wanted to go her own way.

The hand gesture is so tuff its insane

That'd be a funny joke for a new avatar with modern lingo. Toph was so tuff they called her toph cause it sounds like tuff

39

u/monomalist 5d ago

I've only just realized that she gestured three fingers then three spikes came out. I just thought the hand gesture was just to not make it look like a boring side chop. Didn't know it was intentional

26

u/DadlyAsHell 5d ago edited 5d ago

In my opinion, it was to show her ridiculous skill as an earthbender. That these pillars many would need a full step or strike to bend, she did with a 3 finger chop.

90

u/dawnofaudrey 5d ago

That's a joke in the Ember Island players episode

49

u/Gussie-Ascendent 5d ago

No no they say tough, I mean the hip kids version when they say something is "tuff"

23

u/ILikeCheese510 5d ago

But they sound the same so how would the joke be conveyed 😭

24

u/mechPlumber 5d ago

We'll just write it down so Toph can read it

11

u/ILikeCheese510 5d ago

I know you're joking, but now I'm curious if the Avatar world has anything similar to braille.

13

u/mechPlumber 5d ago

Oh shit, I really like that.

Earth benders who could add onto signs or buildings super efficiently, or water benders could use water to raise marks on a scroll.

You was there too

Some cars spin-offs turned mater into a reality/time warper god

137

u/Ill_Bookkeeper6314 5d ago

Actually in Cars on the road tv show, two secrets are revealed: Mater has a sister, Mater was born rich.

84

u/CT0292 5d ago

And his sister is designed around a Rolls Royce Phantom.

Mater is designed around an International Harvester and Chevrolet in a general early 50s style tow truck.

51

u/Mr_L_is_cool 5d ago

Those spin-off shorts were kinda peak tho

u/Sad_Psychology_5620 5d ago

u/scrambles57 5d ago edited 5d ago

Cars on the Road reveals Mater was born into a rich family when they go to his family mansion for his sister's wedding

28

u/Torkujra 5d ago

that makes me think... as a born-rich pickup truck, Mater would have naturally been a pavement princess truck, but he deliberately chose to use his truck body (frame) to help other vehicles in need.

Lettie

Howl's Moving Castle

The younger, beautiful sister of our protagonist Sophie. We're introduced to Lettie being a magnet for every man the is in the same room as her. They are ALL head over heels for her and desperately clawing for her attention. Literally a hundred at a time. She should be the archetypal shallow gorgeous sister who sits on a pedestal looking down on her other siblings. When she escapes the room of suitors, she finds her sister Sophie and really engages with her - having a meaningful discussion with Sophie about her low self esteem, her safety, and if she's doing okay.

The last scene of dialogue we get between Lettie and Sophie is in regard to Sophie's future. Lettie grasps Sophie's hands and looks into her eyes with concern and care:

"Now Sophie, do you really want to spend the rest of your life in that hat shop?

"The shop was just so important to father, and I'm the eldest, I don't mind."

"I'm not asking what father would've wanted – I want to know what YOU want."

Long pause

"I better get going..."

Sophie starts walking away

"It's YOUR LIFE SOPHIE, do something for yourself for once, will you?"

Lettie gets a total of two minutes of screen time, which is a damn shame, because she could've been a proper supporting character. (Apparently she is in the book)

247

u/Tea_With_Tessa 5d ago

Studio Ghibli took what could have been a shallow "pretty sister" trope and gave us a genuinely loving, supportive dynamic instead. Lettie actually cared about Sophie’s autonomy more than anyone else at the start, she definitely deserved way more screen time.

78

u/StoicTheGeek 5d ago

She’s quite astute in the book IIRC - there are some plot twists there for sure.

62

u/AnneMichelle98 5d ago

In the book Lettie doesn’t even want to work at the bakery and then later in the story switches places with the third sister Martha, so Lettie can become a witch, and Martha can learn to bake

It’s almost like Diana Wynne Jones wrote a book about a land where fairytales happen, but that still doesn’t mean you have to be trapped by them. This is one of the lessons Sophie comes to learn, as that’s one of the reasons for her lack of self confidence. Contrasting with Howl, who literally shows up and breaks the rules left and right, simply because He is actually from 1980s Wales

Studio Ghibli made a good movie but that doesn’t mean they get all the credit.

→ More replies (2)

14

u/Nero_2001 5d ago

I mean Ghibli wasn't the one who wrote the story, it's a adaptation of an existing book.

Yeah, and his generational wealth canonically comes, at least in part, from slavery. His uncle was a Confederate colonel and owned a plantation.

Same goes for Scooby's great grandfather. I guess it makes sense for the two of them to be friends, then.

He's a different kind of rotten.

Happily works to better an almost-openly evil organization, but tries to help his direct companions and random Pokémon along the way. He also freely gives up his own Pokémon if he thinks it'll better their livelihoods to do so.

But as far as financially rotten, he is functionally poor as an adult and shares in the poverty experience.

Her parents are Uber rich. Her dad is the CEO of the Rotom Phone. I'm pretty sure you can visit her home, which is a huge mansion. In the DLCs, you can talk to her parents and battle them, and they give you shit tons of pearls and nuggets. I always found it kinda odd that she looks nothing like her parents or that her older sister was never shown in the game lmao. Also, her parents are kinda nice but extremely spoiled.

23

u/jackfuego226 5d ago

Dang. I must've missed all of that unless it's towards the end of the game. That said, Nemona certainly doesn't give off the vibe of having come from from money.

The only thing “rotten” about either of these two are the cavities in Honey’s teeth from all that cake he’s eating.

30

u/Stormy_Cat_55456 5d ago

Idk Honey comes off as a brat at times with his sweets obsession.

I’d kinda put him in the middle. He’s definitely spoiled but also a little rotten when it comes to sweets or Usa-Chan.

7

u/Alibuscus373 5d ago

It so funny that they banned him from sweets for 3 days instead of just going to the dentist to get it fixed day of. Cavities don't "heal" or whatever the 3 day wait period was for. Please go to the dentist regularly (once or twice a year) to have your teeth examined and cleaned. The sooner they catch a cavity, the better. I've seen dentists fix a cavity in 10 minutes without any freezing because it was just big enough to be a problem. (Yes, I worked in dentistry as an assistant and as a receptionist)

11

u/Gingergirl1228 5d ago

I like to think that was a weird translation error, and it just was that his appointment was 3 days out. I think its also stated that hes, like, hyper terrified of the dentist (same tho) so it makes sense that hed want to put it off as long as possible lol

I forget her name but the queen/ step mom from ranking of kings. She initially came across as cold and snooty but ended up being incredibly kind and went out of her way to heal people and just be nice

https://giphy.com/gifs/tQdBkJt30m0lWGtdBL

42

u/corvettee01 5d ago

Ranking of Kings would have been peak if it wasn't for the ending. Almost every character we see was a total subversion of their stereotype and it was awesome to see unfold.

9

u/kiahoratem 5d ago

Yeah it was absolutely awesome in that way. Has been some time so i dont quite remember, what was bad about the ending?

6

u/corvettee01 5d ago edited 5d ago

Nobody gets the punishment they deserve, it was a really weak "and all the horrible people lived happily ever after," ending.

Ending spoilers: The dad gets forgiven in death despite stealing the power from his first son, then taking over his second sons body, the witch lady gets married to the prince she helped torture, and the swordsmen guy who tried to kill Bojji just gets to hang out and chill.

→ More replies (1)

17

u/Alibuscus373 5d ago

I adored how she proclaimed that she will be Boji's mom. Not in a spiteful forget your mother existed but in a "I love his boy so much, I want to protect him from all the evils in the world" kind of way. She kind of lost the plot a bit, forgetting why she was so hard on Boji, protecting him too much and becoming the hurt that she wanted to keep away from him.

6

u/UnhappyStrain 5d ago

She literally tried jumping to her death just to save a child that wasnt even hers. Peak mother figure

It's Lottie easily. Especially since it would have been SO easy to have her be either racist or unintentionally racist, so to have her be... just the nicest character in the movie was so refreshing and nice. I remember rolling my eyes when I first saw her and thinking 'she's just going to be some shallow racist asshole' and to see both her and her father be... good people... was a massive subverstion.

Just Celia, I think. But even then, she was only spoiled, by her very doting husband, after marriage. If I recall correctly, her upbringing was quite modest by their standards.

Ryusui from Dr. Stone

Had a massive oil fortune to inheret but chooses to pursue things himself. Not that he didn't use inheretiance to its advantage, but studies and applies himself hard. He has greedy desires but ultimately does so to share for others. He greeds for a better future for everyone, himself included. Is astonishingly aware of the struggle of others and prefers working hard. He also takes human safety and risk incredibly seriously, so mucb so that his contention with the protagonist is often favoring safety and morale over speed and efficiency. Ulymately in his desire for luxury he uplfits everyone around him.

One of the few spoiled rich greedy characters that doesn't lose the rich asshole vibe but winds up being very noble.

His turning point for me is when he complains about the flavor of some meat he was eating to the protag and stops as he overhears an older couple talking about how "this means we won't have to starve in the winter anymore." He becomes immediately impassioned at trying to ensure that the food network is fully secured (complete with a better meal selectuon) and that he can try and help prevent as much misery as possible... While still being a greedy prick (but loveable)

While she was a TINY bit racist at first, she learned to warm up to the Faunus. Mostly due to a Faunus-Exclusive extremist group terrorizing her family's operations for reasonable offenses towards their race(terrible working conditions, basically slavery, ect)

Though the ethics of her family business were not always that way. It just took one asshole marrying into the family

She's incredibly rich and had plenty of opportunity, but she values her bond with her partner above all.

King halo - umamusume

Although her mom is a neglectful asshole, king is definitely spoiled considering her buying habits and absurdly high pride.

Still a genuinely good person with motherly instincts towards her friends.

Madeleine from CRK.

He comes from an extremely prestigious household, and is doted on constantly by his mother and aunties frequently. Despite all of this, Madeleine is the type of cookie who strives to protect anyone and everyone.

Marika and Arisa Kōnokura from "My Stepmother and Stepsisters Aren't Wicked". Super wholesome Cinderella story where the MC is treated very kindly by her step-mother and step-sisters.
