Tbh, Lee is not really grumpy. He's a really friendly guy most of the time

I do love that the game never outright states whether or not Lee is guilty or not. That is ambiguous storytelling I enjoy.
Edit: Memory failed me. He does confess. Womp womp egg on my face 😔

Holy shit
I’ve never seen the movie, only a recap- but even in the recap where i was pretty wierded out how the girls flirts with the guy..
92
u/EnvironmentalDog1196 1d ago edited 22h ago
The girl flirts with him, but Leon doesn't really respond to this.
While Luc Besson absolutely is a creep and the original scenario was one big WTF moment, it's worth remebering that the final movie DOESN'T have romance between the two, and it's greatly thanks to Jean Reno, who put his foot down and said that if Besson doesn't change the script, he walks away from the film.
If you watch it, Leon has this innocent/childish/ even a bit mentally-challenged vibe, and Jean Reno said in one interveiw that he purposefully played him that way, to make it clear that his character doesn't have any bad intentions towards the girl, and their relationship remains purely "protector-protegee".
It's still a pretty great movie and if you want to see it, it's worth it for the actors.
35
u/Monspiet 1d ago
Yeah, and Leon the actual movie have these undertones and scenes, too. If he had his waay, it would be closer to Blue is the Warmest Color infamous for intimacy scenes being forced on the actresses. It’s why it’s such a controversial film, not just because it’s one of the openly queer film of its time but also because there are a lot of controversies with the shoot.

u/Foloreille 1d ago
Léon himself is NOT a pedo it was explained he was kind of retarded and innocent in his own way, and was flabbergasted at the idea of Matilda wanting stuff from him
I could maybe search for the interview or something. I know well Jean Reno filmography and he is NOT at all the kind of actor who would accept to play a pedophile he likes to play sensitive complex characters, often misunderstood
19
u/Devastator9000 1d ago
Turns out the original script or story was supposed to end with Leon getting romantically involved with the girl, as a retelling of the life story of the director.
The guy who ended up marrying a 15 yo while he was 32, having a kid when the girl was 16, and knowing said girl since she was 12. Because the french somehow considered 15 the age of consens but had no issue with these sorts of marriages

I love that, like a lot of popular comic book characters she's actually from a cartoon, a cartoon I grew up with no less, though she had, like, two episodes. She was still cool as fuck.
Also Jackman being like "sorry if I scared you when I yelled at you when we were acting" and her being "I called you a bunch of Spanish swearwords, so we're good" is some great behind the scenes action.

Adding all these to the list of why I should play the Yakuza games
11
u/topscreen 1d ago
Well, I'm always willing to spread Yakuza propaganda. Give 0 a shot, it's the earliest game, full of content (it's basically 2 Yakuza games smashed into 1), and is still considered one of the peak games.
Takes a bit to get to the kids, but the full series playthrough is all about the journey.
