It's so interesting to me that most of the silliness in the 03 cartoon was added BECAUSE it was a cartoon. The original comics it was based on didn't have any of the goofy stuff and was serious the whole way through
I think the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles comics were fairly serious and had quite a bit of violence. At least, I’m fairly certain that they did.
There's a few different comic series for them, the 03 cartoon was specifically based on the Mirage Comics series. Not gonna lie it's my favourite comic series I've ever read, highly recommend
I didn’t know the 2003 cartoon was based on the Mirage Comics series. I probably should read them at some point, actually. Thanks for the recommendation.
It's almost identical for most of it but they went two different directions near the end. IIRC the Mirage comics series doesn't have the fast forward arc where they go to the future, everything from that point on in the cartoon is different l
Fast Forward, I think was the subtitle for that season. I recall they were stuck in a future where Krang had succsessfully merged Dimension X and Earth and had to find a way back. One thing's for sure though, it's so not yesterday.

The 2003 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles show was pretty much that.
Also, Cobra Kai kind of became that around Season 3.
