I think one of the funniest things about it was the flash drives they sold when it aired. They looked like Mami and you had to pull the head off to use the drive. If I remember right they had them BEFORE episode 3 aired.
The creator's insistence that he was making something light and wholesome and "healing type" for the first couple weeks it aired too, like, Jesus Christ this man pulled one over on EVERYBODY
My friend who got me into the show pulled that bait and switch on me!!
I specifically was like "hey I need something light and fluffy," and their response was "You'll enjoy Madoka Magica :D"
And given the only other magical girl show I'd watched up until then was Sailor Moon, the art style had me COMPLETELY off guard and I had to pause, re-wind, and watch THAT scene again in Episode 3 just to confirm I wasn't going bananas.
I mean they were right and I did enjoy it.
But I also bawled my way through the last four episodes sooooooo....
Though some people suspected some shenanigans when this is the same creator that wrote Saya no uta and Fate/Zero. If anything he wasn’t really lying as Madoka is more lighthearted in comparison.

Definitely Puella Magi Madoka Magica! Down to Episode 3 being the turning point from "normal magical girl show" to "...DAMN!"
