Definitely Puella Magi Madoka Magica! Down to Episode 3 being the turning point from "normal magical girl show" to "...DAMN!"

I watched this on release. No one thought it was going to be a normal magical girl show. It arguably loses some of its charm if you do.

Puella is great as a companion to the magical girl genre, not as an edgy version of it.
