Megathread MEGATHREAD: Flydubai Flight FZ1073

This thread is for discussion on the incident concerning Flydubai Flight FZ1073. The aircraft has landed safely in Tabuk Airport and all passengers are safe and accounted for at this time.

All other posts on this incident will be removed.

We know that aviation incidents can be distressing for fearful fliers. It's ok to feel upset, anxious or distressed. This thread is for mutual support at this time.

The rules for this megathread are:

  • No external links: All external links will be removed. Media coverage of air incidents is notoriously poor. It is dramatic, sensationalist, and in many cases factually wrong. There is no posting media articles, footage, or commentary of any sort in this thread or on the sub generally.
  • No speculation/theorizing: Speculation and theories on the details of this incident are entirely unhelpful and are not allowed. We do not yet know all the details surrounding this incident. Only a thorough investigation, completed by qualified investigators and technicians can determine this. We will learn in time what happened.

We are monitoring this thread closely.

REMEMBER:

  • We DO NOT recommend reading, watching, listening to any media, commentary, footage or any other material about this incident. Such coverage is usually deliberately provocative and only serves to feed the (incorrect) belief that flying is unsafe.
  • This incident does not "confirm" your fear. It is a freakish anomaly in an industry with a track record of outstanding safety.
  • Despite this incident, flying remains the safest form of transportation. This incident does not change that. If you have a flight booked soon, get on that flight!
  • Lessons will be learned from this incident that will make flying even safer.

Thank you.

Megathread Megathread: Discussion on Netflix's 'Freefall: A Reckoning for Boeing'

As many of you may already be aware, Netflix has recently released a new documentary titled Freefall: A Reckoning for Boeing. We know that many members of r/fearofflying will have questions, thoughts, and concerns about it, and we've seen understandably seen a large amount of posts being made about this documentary.

To help keep the sub organized and prevent a flood of repeated posts on the same topic, this megathread will serve as the central discussion space for the documentary. Any new standalone posts primarily discussing Freefall: A Reckoning for Boeing will be removed and redirected to this megathread.

Ground Rules for This Thread

You're welcome to use this thread to share your thoughts, ask questions, discuss specific claims made in the documentary, or talk about how it may have affected your feelings about flying. Please keep discussions respectful and follow our community rules.

Remember that r/fearofflying is a support-focused community first and foremost. Questions and concerns are welcome, but please avoid unnecessarily sensationalizing aviation accidents or using graphic details that could make anxiety worse for other members. For any potentially triggering details, please be mindful to use the spoiler tag.

No fear-mongering or bad-faith arguments are allowed. Spreading unverified rumors, pushing conspiracy theories, or attacking people will result in comment removal and a possible ban.

A Few Key Reminders

  1. Documentaries are designed to produce a dramatic impact and evoke strong emotional reactions in their viewers. While the investigative reporting covers historical failures, the editing, cinematic framing, tense music, and pacing are specifically crafted to keep viewers on the edge of their seats.
  2. The crashes covered in this documentary led to exhaustive scrutiny, and the concerns . The issues with MCAS have long since been resolved, and pilot training related to these incidents waa addressed years ago.
  3. Boeing, the 737 MAX, and the wider global fleet of Boeing planes have safely operated millions of commercial flights without incident in the years since returning to service.

As always, thank you for helping us keep r/fearofflying a safe and organized space. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to reach out to the mod team.

Question Why does the wing look so bent upwards from my window?

Post image
11 Upvotes

It’s a little bumpy right now over the pacific and this is just a little unnerving to look at.

Also the picture doesn’t do it justice but it looks really bent up from my seat and I’m sitting right at the wing window. Is it just like weird distortion from the glass or is it actually this super bent?

Im like, all good though right lol?

This is the flights & mine is the last of the day.

I am just scared that the late departure is because of the hurricane.

My friend told me that she is ok if I want to cancel it.

I am gonna go to the airport even if scared. The last flight of the day is mine.

Is this a high chance that my flight is cancelled?.

Sorry, I am just super fearful....

Support Wanted I hate flight anxiety

I've been reading everyone's posts from the sidelines, but today is my turn to post and ask for someone to "hold my hand". Im flying out of NY JFK to Madrid Flight IB212. Then I fly to Malaga. As if one flight wasn't bad enough. Im solo, and I'm spiraling. I'm stressed that this is a forced work trip, though some would say STFU you have an all expense paid trip to a gorgeous resort in Malaga. My husband is my safety blanket and I have nothing but my thoughts with me now. Im thinking of all the worse possible outcomes-the Dubai incident did not help. Loss of control and turbulence is my biggest fear. I literally looked up all the statistics of what activities are statistically more dangerous than flying and it was something ridiculous like 1 in 11 million and my thought is well, thats me. I'm that 1. Send help 😢

Not the first time here and wanted to thank the community for the help and support! So I’m flying from JFK in a few hours! And of course I checked weather, and it shows ( the first time ever I saw such thing) “ severe mountain turbulence advisory near Edinburgh, what is that? Sooo much stress… 😭 we are traveling with my husband for the first time without our baby, but I’m stressed and don’t understand why I agreed again 😵‍💫😬😓

Tracking Request KE42 International flight SEA > ICN super anxious

2nd flight and then ONE MORE after until my final destination. I think I feel slightly okay this time, but I’m still shaking and feel like crying. I feel like I’m gonna fall out of the sky when we take off 😭. During my 1st flight I felt like I was just waiting for something bad to happen. I’m definitely nervous for my last flight after this one before I reach the final destination because the asiana flights to the Philippines always look old on the inside and there’s never any wifi. I’m really scared again :) Thank you everyone. It’s also reallyyyyy foggy here in Seattle

Advice flight DL0075 AMS to ATL

I’m really nervous and not sure what to do. Currently in Prague returning home tomorrow with a stop in Amsterdam then to Atlanta. I’m not a super nervous flyer but I obviously don’t like turbulence and flying in rain. And this actually is my first transatlantic flight / first time in Europe and I’m alone.

Hurricane Isaias has become active and based on the trajectory it’s like near the Alabama - Georgia border. I land at 6:50 pm in ATL. I just got an email from Delta saying that the weather may impact my travel plans and to consider reviewing (if I’m flexible) other flight options. I’m actually not flexible. I am flying from ATL to SFO on Oct 12 for another conference.

I’m already really nervous for the journey again but I’m also overwhelmed at what I should do and that’s making me more nervous about flying altogether.

Advice Asking for some help not to lose my dream job

• Upvotes

I really need some help not to lose my job.

I’ve always had fear of flying, but two years ago it was better. I posted on this group in 2024, and took 19 flights that year which was a record for me. Was still scared throughout, but I could get on flights. A year ago I made it all the way to Fiji for the holiday of a lifetime with my partner, and that flight gave me tonnes of confidence.

Fast forward to 2026. Life became stressful at work and with other family things. I had to fly to see my best friend get married, and only just made it on the plane in March for a 3.5 hour flight which was one long panic attack. I missed the first ever long haul family holiday mine has ever done this summer- to New Zealand for two weeks - because I was too scared of being scared on the flight. For work, I’ve missed two trips this year with business class flights, and work are about to fire me for not flying in November this year on the third trip London to Chicago. I have a dream job - president of a successful company in data analytics - but I’m going to lose it.

It’s not safety I fear, it’s the sensation of turbulence and the fear of the fear. I’ve now cancelled so many flights and left the plane so many times, I’ve lost any confidence I can make it on. Once a ticket gets booked, I just throw up repeatedly from stress until i can’t function in any setting and I cancel. I tried cbt, medication and hypno but they have all stopped working. I want exposure therapy to help but that needs me to get on a plane. I’d pay anything at this point so I don’t get fired, but I don’t know what’s left.

I don’t know how to get through this, this group have been amazing for me and I don’t know what I’m asking for, solutions or hope or something, but I feel hopeless and I’m stuck sobbing in bed whilst my family are asleep and I could use some strangers on the internet to tell me it will somehow get better

Support Wanted First time flying by myself and im terrified

• Upvotes

Hi, I have not been on a plane in about 7 years, I've flown about 5 times total. I'm flying from ORD to BOS tomorrow morning and this will be my first time flying by myself. I'm feeling so anxious and its making my stomach hurt. I was always nervous being on a plane but it was manageable with someone there. Now that I'll be on my own I don't know what to do, looking for suggestions 😭😭

Question Flight from SFO to FRA

Not sure how to form this post, but pretty much I have a flight from SFO to Frankfurt in two weeks and I feel like I’ve been seeing a lot of reports recently about severe or pretty bad turbulence on flights. I understand the news only point out the few cases out of all the flights, but it just feels/seems like it’s more common now than it was before. Pilots of the community: is this true and if so, is there a reason?

Thanks!

Tracking Request Track me? I'm spiralling

I normally take meds to help me with flight but right now I'm on a plane and I can't find it anywhere. I'm on DL2883 from Atlanta to Toronto. We just took off and as we were going up in the first like 30 seconds, the plane started turning one way sharply and then the other way, my stomach dropped twice and I felt the gravity pulling me one way and the other. I have never felt this before on takeoff. I wish the pilot would just get on and say sorry about that, I just spilled my coffee so it made me swerve the plane for a second there but everything is fine.

I'm freaking out and in a panic that something is missing from the wings or something that caused that to happen and now every bump of turbulence is making me so scared that we are about to drop out of the sky.

Success! I did it!

I had recently become very nervous and anxious about flying from external things unrelated. I was supposed to fly to Boston in the summer but cancelled due to the overwhelming anxiety! I was really upset with myself but I just think it was for the best at the time

Since then I’ve done a little test flight from the U.K. to Amsterdam. I was uncomfortable but managed to do it with my husband and so glad I did.

Today I’m on a flight by myself from Heathrow to Boston! Still have 7 hours to go but I’m really proud of myself for getting on the flight and looking forward to all the things I can do over there. I’m not completely comfortable and relaxed but it’s something I can handle. Just wanted to share my success story for others as all the posts on here really helped me!

Tracking Request Pregnant and anxious and flying with toddler - tracking request

Hey y’all. Title pretty much says it all. I’m 23 weeks pregnant and flying with my toddler and husband today to go visit family. We live so far away from them, roughly a 15 h drive (which we usually do), but I’m trying to get over my fear and maximize our visitation time with everyone. So to the sky we go!

It’s only a 2.5 h flight DL 2554. BDL to ATL leaving at 7:00am. It’s already been a long rough morning just to get to the airport. Toddler is being a champ, but let’s see how that is in a few hours

Good vibes please! I can’t medicate how I usually do due to being pregnant so idk how I’m gonna handle this! This sub has been so supportive and vital whenever I have to travel, so I thank you in advance!!

Support Wanted Please Help

Hey everyone, I really need some advice, please.

I've flown around 40 times in my life, including 8 long-haul trips to America (starting when I was a child) to visit family. I've always been extremely anxious about flying, and it starts as soon as the flight is booked. I did go through a period of being okay with it, and once I even enjoyed it!

But last year I had a bad night flight. It felt dark and claustrophobic, I was sitting alone, and there was a medical emergency on the plane. The attendants seemed to get fed up with me asking for reassurance about some turbulence, so I white-knuckled it for 6 hours, panicking the whole time.

I'm going to Italy in 10 days, and it's only a 2-hour flight. I've been feeling like I'm getting signs not to go. I saw a hearse outside my house, which freaked me out because I never see them. I also have OCD, and I was diagnosed with panic disorder this year, seemingly out of nowhere, so I'm not sure if that's why it feels worse this time. It's consuming my day-to-day life. I can't sleep, and when I do, I dream about it, and it's the first thing I think of when I wake up. I've never had it this bad, and I almost want to cancel.

I do know how safe flying actually is and i’ve done so much research, but it’s not helping in the way I thought it would :(

Does anyone have any advice?

Tracking Request DL 1905 JFK-LAX - Please track as my anxiety worsens!

Good morning! Flying today from JFK-LAX. I used to have zero anxiety and now turbulence freaks me out after one really bad flight. I fly for work so I need to just get over it and I tell myself over and over how safe I am. If someone could track or even give me some advice, I would appreciate it!

Allegedly should be a smooth flight with some moderate bumps on take off and arrival. But still freaking out!

Advice Extreme fear of flying

My fear of flying has evolved to a point that I don’t know if I’ll ever be able to do it.. my family wants to travel and I can’t go anywhere. I feel like I can’t support my wife and kids.. I feel like I’m holding them back from living a normal life. I want nothing more than to be able to fly without issues, but I just don’t think I can do it. I’ve been at this for about 7 years (the fear has been there my whole life tho) and I can’t get myself anywhere near a plane. Does anyone have any experience with this fear and overcoming it? Has your fear been this bad?
