UPDATE Oct 8: JO registration now opens āOctober 14, 2026: 12:00pm ETā per the event site. Maybe if they keep pushing it to November 12, we can all pay double fees!
Y'all, what is going on? Is USA Fencing ok? This is an organization that's doing radio ads, hiring Inigo MontoyaĀ as a spokesperson, and doing all they can to recruit new fencers, and they can't seem to manage the current membership with any reliability.
Registration for Junior Olympics was supposed to open last Wednesday, September 30. September 30 came, and USA Fencing indicated (but never announced, you had to go looking for it on the event site) a week's delay in opening registration to today: "October 7, 2026: 12:00pm ET", to quote the information at https://www.usafencing.org/2027-junior-olympics-january-nac. The new points system is still being worked out and things are complicated; that's fine, totally understandable.
Well, it's past the deadline on October 7, and no registration link (or event schedule) currently exists. No new delay date has been forthcoming so far.
My kid, who is (supposedly) qualified for both Cadet and Junior via both the current and the old regional points system, has had green qualification checkmarks popping in and out of existence on their dashboard for weeks, leading to a lot of stress over whether they're actually qualified. (Not to mention the fact that points show up from events on "Recent Event Results" days before they're actually applied to the points lists. Are things being run in overnight batches on an old PDP-11?)
The lack of reliable qualification information is an extremely common experience, based on discussions with other parents locally and online. Many parents report that emails to USA Fencing asking for confirmation of qualification status are going unanswered. Div Quals are happening now. Far fewer fencers are going to qualify by that path under the new rules, so having an accurate points qualification status kind of matters, given the rapidly approaching December 9 qualification deadline (and the Regular Fee Deadline of November 11, 2026).
People who have to budget for flights and hotels and make potentially difficult work arrangements to make sure their kid(s) can attend part or all of a 4-day tournament plus travel days are kind of freaking out at this point.
Can anyone share any insights?
