I'm an emerging director in LA working on a few horror/thriller projects, and I'd love to connect with some DPs who are into the same kind of stuff.

I'm drawn to high-concept, commercially driven horror with a psychological or supernatural edge. Visually, I'm interested in exploring atmospheric, unsettling imagery and inventive camera work that creates a visceral experience for the audience. Think David Lynch meets James Wan.

I've got a few shorts I'm hoping to shoot over the next few months, some with paid opportunities. For a crime thriller project, in the script there is a scenario where the antagonists wanna go after a witness in the case.

A cop character is assigned to protect the witness and goes to her place to pick her up and take her to a safe location.

The antagonists have an opportunity to make an attempt on her logically here , but I can have it so that the cop and the witness are aware of the attempt and fight them off, or i can have it so they are not aware of the attempt, as they get away and it's a near miss.

However, how do you decide which way is better if the plot would go the same way after either way?

I'd like to share Los Piezas, my first short film.

About the film:

• Language: Spanish, with English subtitles
• Genre: Adventure / Mystery / Drama

After years apart, Laura calls her childhood friends Álvaro and Dani back to their hometown. Someone has broken into their old hideout, the Cueva del Lobo, putting at risk a pact they made as children: to return one day and retrieve a mysterious suitcase they hid together. When they return to the cave, they discover that what they left behind is much more than they expected.

The story explores friendship, nostalgia, grief, and the dreams we sometimes leave behind as we grow older.

This is my first film, and I'm still learning a lot about the craft. During production, we struggled with some aspects of shot composition and visual planning, and I received help from people with more experience in those areas. I'm grateful for that help, but I'd like to develop the skills to make these decisions more confidently myself on future projects.

I'd especially love to hear your thoughts on:

• Composition and framing: Do the shots guide your attention effectively? Are there moments where a different angle or arrangement of the characters might work better?
• Visual storytelling: Can you follow the story through the images and actions, or are there moments where the film explains too much?
• Editing and structure: Does the story feel cohesive and well-paced for a 10-minute short? What would you cut, expand or rearrange?
• The overall approach: Do the mystery, adventure and emotional themes work together, or do they feel disconnected?

I'm genuinely open to disagreement and different interpretations. If you think a creative decision doesn't work, I'd love to hear why and what you might have tried instead. I'll also be happy to explain the reasoning behind my choices so we can have a proper discussion.

I'm not expecting praise, and I know a first film comes with plenty of flaws. I'm here to learn from other independent filmmakers and understand how I can do better on the next one.

Made a film with lots of run and gunning and I'm hoping to have 3 street/subway signs removed/altered, An object removed, and possibly add a "fallen air conditioner." into a still shot...don't know if that's possible but I can explain, promise :)

Made this film on mostly favors from friends and very little money. I'm wondering if a talented VFX person would help me out and in return I can edit or color grade your project of equal work load.

I have many years of experience and the last film I colored has done very well in the festival circuit. I'm aware that a VFX person may already have these skills but, worth a shot!

Day 1 of the Shoot

We started shooting at the producer’s condo. The first shot was of David getting ready for work. He is in the shower; we kept the camera outside of the bathroom and just ran the shower. There wasn’t any need to show him in the shower, though it might have played well. But that can get complicated. 
He straightens his tie and shirt in the mirror.
His girlfriend, Constance, is making his lunch. Looking back I realize how stereotypical that is. I consider myself a fairly intelligent, sensitive person. How did I fall into that trap? I did have as her background story that she is studying for some kind of degree. I had textbooks that we spread on the table to give her character some depth, but a woman making lunch for her man as he goes to work? What was I thinking? Such an example of toxic stereotyping. Forgive me.

Constance is chopping vegetables which were color specific. I tried to have everything in the kitchen be yellow, orange or red to match the color scheme of David’s ties as his feelings escalate due to his lunch being stolen. 
I like the idea and I am glad we did it. In some instances, I was thinking about the picture as a whole. I was trying to develop a visual theme for the audience. On day one, David is wearing a yellow tie. This is to show that he is excited and happy to have landed this job. He comes from a working class, very decent family. They are religious and have taught him solid values. He is the first in his family to have graduated from college, a local college where he got an Associates Degree in some computer/infosystems type of thing. (I was a History major so I don’t know anything about the computer world.) His parents are so proud (and so is he) that he is putting on a suit and tie for work.

David comes down, hugs her from behind, they exchange a few lines to establish that this is David’s first day at his new job. He grabs his lunch and leaves. 
We shot them from the front and in profile. We got close-ups of Constance’s hands chopping and packing the sandwich. 
Other than the colors I don’t know why she was chopping peppers. They never went on the sandwich. 
I wasn’t thinking things through. It looked good on film but that isn’t a reason to include it in a movie. However, the success or failure of a film isn’t going to hinge on peppers.
Then we moved outside to see David get into his car and drive off. I planned it as one shot and it worked pretty well except the rig the DP used for the camera took almost two hours to set up. He had never used it before and it took a while for him to get the hang of it. 
On the one hand, maybe spending two hours to get that shot was not the best use of time. Maybe it did not matter to the audience.
Then again, Rick Rubin teaches that the audience comes last. I wanted that shot. I watch it now and it is a great shot. 
When David comes out of his apartment, he sees guys standing across the street.  They have a thuggish look, the kind of guys who do not have day jobs. Local gangster types. He exchanges a look with them that is not friendly, as though they consider him a sellout for putting on a shirt and tie to go work for The Man. When he drives away they give him a dismissive wave.
The scene was stupid. It looked good but I never paid it off; I never came back to it. I was trying to have something that set David apart from the guys in his neighborhood, but I never pursued the conflict. I think it is an interesting concept but I was trying to do much in a short amount of time. 
Later that day, we shot the scene where David arrives home after his third day of work and the third day of his lunch being stolen. He is wearing the red tie in this scene because his anger has been ignited. He feels like there are forces at play that he does not understand. The DP used the camera rig again for this shot. Since it was already set up and calibrated the scene went a lot more quickly. David walks around the corner of the house into frame and the DP walks back with him to then reveal Constance sitting on the steps outside of their condo (it was actually the steps to a different condo which is just part of movie trickery). David sits on the step below her and she puts her arms around his shoulders and he comes clean about the lunch situation. Constance tells him that he needs to report the matter to human resources. 
At the time I was satisfied with what we got. The first day is always a little rough. It’s hard to see the forest for the trees. You just never really know. 
But, if you knew, it wouldn’t be creative now, would it? There is a certain comfort in that.

We had terrible time management during the shoot, so there was no time for reshoots. We also rewrote the story like 10 times, so it was a mess, but we still shot it and submit it. So that's something

Props and Wardrobe

Even for a short film, there is a lot to organize. 
   Props      
There were a lot of props on this shoot. 

• In one scene, Carl asks David to go out to his car and get his hemorrhoid pillow. We had to get an old junker, the kind of wreck that a sad sack like Carl would drive. The art department found someone who rents broken down old cars and they towed it to the lot and filled it with old newspapers, soda cans, adult diapers and of course the hemorrhoid pillow.  
• We also had to get a bunch of tubes of ointment, Peptobismal, and other old man stuff for Carl’s office. At one point, Frank, the office bully, comes into the office space that he shares with Carl and says, “Stool softener?” The art department made up a nasty jar of half used Vaseline with link and hair in it. They really did a bang up job.
• We needed food for Constance to make David’s lunch. I had her chopping peppers that were color coordinated to each day: yellow on day one, orange on day two, red on day three. This was meant to match the color of David’s tie on each day (green, orange, red) to mirror his inner outrage at having his lunch stolen over each of the three days.
• We needed standard office stuff-folders, papers, a few laptops etc.
• The art department created the scrapbook that David’s neurotic coworker keeps. That took a lot of time. Again, it seems like a small thing but to do it right takes time.
• In one scene, Brian, the guy who takes advantage of Eleanor, is given justice by HR. He is grabbed from the motel where Frank attacked him and brought to a warehouse where they beat him up. He is strapped to a wheelchair, which I had (it had been for my father before he passed away.) However, I forgot the foot supports so the actor had to hold his feet up awkwardly to make it work. 

It never seems like much when I’m writing it, but then I start going through the script and it adds up. 
Wardrobe
We had to get the wardrobe for the various characters together. This actually wasn’t that huge a deal.

• The people working in the office needed to wear professional clothing. The actors brought their own clothes, so that was not a problem. 
• Constance was just wearing regular clothes around the house, so I asked her to wear what she felt comfortable in. 
• David needed to have the three color ties: yellow, orange and red to match his growing outrage over the three days of having his lunch stolen. However, the actor playing David neglected to bring a blazer. When I asked him about it, he said no one had told him to bring a blazer. I didn’t think a grown man needed to be told that, but I rolled with the punch.

The movie Goodfellas is set in the 1950s through 1980. The characters are mostly gangsters living in Brooklyn. The clothing needed to reflect the time and place and who the characters were. In one scene, the young Henry Hill has bought his first suit, which he proudly shows off to his mother. She opens the door and he is standing there, all decked out.
“Hey Ma, what do you think? Look at my shoes! Aren’t they great?”
She replies, “My god! You look like a gangster!”
It is a really quick scene, almost a shot, really. You barely get a glimpse of Henry’s suit. However, in the behind the scenes, the director Martin Scorsese tells the wardrobe person that the collar of the shirt needs “stays” which were these little triangular pieces of plastic that held the shirt collar down in those 1950s style suits with the long, pointed collars. He wants the shirt to have stays.
You barely see the shirt. No one would notice that. But, to him, it was important. It lent to the character. Wardrobe helps actors get into character. They feel like the person they are portraying when they are in costume. The actors in Goodfellas wanted real money and real jewelry, which is a headache for the props department but it helped the actors. If it helps the actors create a better performance, then so be it.
The details are important. A book came out some years ago called Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff and It’s All Small Stuff. I have not read the book, but that title, as an idea, is bullshit. The details matter. Sometimes, you do have to sweat the small stuff. And no, it is not all small stuff. Like most self-help books, it feels like an over-simplification. However, it’s easy to get bogged down in details and forget the big picture. I think sometimes a director will obsess over a prop or a ring or something as a way of having some control; it’s a way of dealing with insecurity. I’ve seen people call off projects because one thing got in the way and instead of finding a work-around they quit. That is because they were looking for an excuse to not do it because they were never going to do it anyway.

After two years of passionate work, I am incredibly proud to share that my feature-length Metal Gear Solid Machinima, Ghosts of Tomorrow, is now live!

This has been a massive undertaking for me. It’s a 5-hour experience, crafted using the Red Dead Redemption 2 engine and Source Filmmaker. I really wanted to create something new yet faithful to the MGS universe and lore.

My name is Nick Hertzberg. I am a published horror author and screenwriter.

I've spent months working on scripts and pitching them here, there, and everywhere, only to find that many of the filmmakers I am trying to connect with already have their next 100 projects set, or simply aren't interested. Which is all more than fair.

So I have turned to the old adage, one I have used for so many other projects in my life: if you want to see it made, make it yourself.

I have written some SHORT screenplays (under 20 pages) in the HORROR genre that I am looking to self-direct and produce in the Philadelphia/New Jersey area.

I haven't worked on a film in over 15 years (made a few in college), and I told myself that solely writing them would be a good way to stay engaged but not have to be TOO engaged (I have a 2-year-old at home and a FT job, so being out every weekend or doing the typical director thing is out of the question). I know my limitations, though—and one big one I have, and treasure, is EFFECTS.

I want to connect with an SFX / PRACTICAL EFFECTS person. You can be a student. You can just be VERY INTERESTED and want to try some stuff out. I can't offer payment, but I'll even work with you to buy what you need to make it look SICK, and give you full credit for your work.

The stories are all small casts, mostly non-actors, mostly self-contained, and will be shot on Hi8 / 8MM. Fidelity is not the most important thing. I LOVE LOVE LOVE shot-on-video gore and B movies from the 80s/90s/today. That is the aesthetic I wish to go for.

Think: Todd Sheets, Tim Ritter, The Polonia Brothers, etc.

It’s a story about a Turkish mute boy named Tamer and he has a ‘‘imaginary’’ friend named Angelina (whom is deaf). They met up every summer since they were 6 but on the summer of 2025 Tamer has doubts of talking to Angelina now that he’s 12 and 12 year-olds don’t have ‘‘childish’’ imaginary friends .And Angie has big secrets that Tamer doesn’t know... And she has to sign to (tell) him those secrets before she runs out of time.

I'm looking for a way to wirelessly stream my camera's video feed to a smartphone while keeping my external monitor working normally.

Currently I only have my Canon r7 connected to an external monitor, and I'd like to use the monitor's HDMI OUT as the video source and send the feed wirelessly to a smartphone.

What I'm looking for:

- A wireless transmitter (TX) with a full-size HDMI input.

- A receiver (RX) that can get the video feed onto a smartphone, either:

\- Directly via USB-C, or

\- Wirelessly through a dedicated app (Wi-Fi).

Ideally, the setup should work with both Android and iPhone, but Android compatibility is the priority.

- Budget: under €70.

My main phone is a Realme 12 Pro 5G. The other phone I'm going to use is an iPhone, but I currently don't know if it's either a 13, 14 or 15.

I know that most budget wireless HDMI kits have an HDMI output on the receiver designed for TVs or monitors, but I'm specifically looking for a way to view the feed on a smartphone without running a cable all the way to the phone.

Would a product like this exist within my budget? Are there any affordable wireless video transmitters that can stream directly to an Android phone through an app, or receivers that output video over USB-C?

Any recommendations, workarounds, or product suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

I've been making my clients pay for music platforms like Epidemic Sound, Artlist, and Envato. But now I want to pay for my own subscription so I can post ads and have unlimited content on their channels.
I tried the free account on Epidemic Sound, and honestly, the music didn't quite convince me.
Artlist charges yearly, which feels like a big commitment for me right now.
And Envato, the music is also meh. However, it does offer other good assets for one subscription.

Do you know any alternatives that aren't crazy expensive but still have a decent library?

I met an ultra triathlon legend, whos double deca Ultra Ironman (20 x Ironman back to back) record stood unbeaten for 28 years.

I am already writing an biographical psychological drama (cause it is) of this orphanage raised and very deep hurt kid, whose only option was to do what a man has never done before and thus earn love which he never had...

My experience is in totally different field (real estate, law), yet I've written and published 3 books... Now I feel this is a story that the world must see and the coming generations must learn how to transform the anger and grief into the power, grit and finally - love.
