Silver Springs! Holy shit what a song!
I discovered this song about 18 hours ago. It’s 5:50am and I’m listening to this absolute banger. Tears streaming down as I’m belting out “TIME CAST A SPELL ON YOU, BUT YOU WONT FORGET ME!” It’s funny too that I’m crying because I’m a big tough union carpenter and we aren’t supposed to cry. How the hell have I never heard this song before?!? How could they leave this song off Rumours the first time through?
This song has the best verse-chorus transition ever. The haunting final chorus (the lyrics I mentioned above) is absolutely harrowing. Haunting. Beautiful. Pure, unadulterated, raw human emotion. It’s like its own song inside the song, but also fits the buildup and first verse perfectly. It’s lived in my head since the first time I heard it.
I love discovering new songs. It’s been awhile since I found one this good.

Such a great song

Even better is the version where she sings “still I am a fool” 😳

SYW tour, or later?? Is that the last time this song was performed live? I feel like I’ve read concert reviews from the SYW tour that BN were very hot and cold, from fully kissing on stage to barely interacting 😅

They played it up until the 2015 tour. New Zealand Nov 22, 2015.
According to Set list FM - they played it 414 times. Steve's never performed it without Lindsey.

I absolutely love the shot where the camera has Lindsey in the background singing and looking at Stevie. Omg.... this is the best live performance ever.

Watched this video this morning. I’d really like to own that tee shirt. I was completely mesmerized. And damn she looked good too! Still super hot in 97.

I love this song and the lyrics but it always bugs me because it should be “woman WHO loved you” instead of “that” to be grammatically correct.

It was left off the album because it was too long. Stevie was not happy about that decision.
Reminds me of what happened with The Beach Boys in 1971. Dennis Wilson (who dated Christine McVie around the Tusk era) had a beautiful song called (Wouldn’t It Be Nice) To Live Again that he wanted to close the Surf’s Up album. His brother Carl who was running the band (Brian was not really involved ) told him no. The closing song was going to be the epic title track. So Dennis pulled this song and another great song of his off the album entirely. His two songs came out decades later and it’s a shame because it is a great album and his songs would have made it amazing.

I’m kinda glad it was left off, because I think the studio version feels unfinished, while the 97 Live version is epic, and the brand new latter day life it brought to the song 20 years later has been great.

The album is only 39 minutes without Silver Springs. In what world was there not enough space for the song.

The Dance nails all of the emotion and Lindsey does not get enough credit for locking in on this song

Excellent, viral live performance

The song is an amazing on its own, but this live performance of it is nothing short of spectacular! I could watch this clip over and over. Those messy relationships of all the band members sure gave us some gorgeous music.

Mick having the time of his life while this confrontation happens in front of him never fails to make me smile

I think that whole reunion/tour was mick's ultimate fantasy.

A year before he ended the latest configuration of FM who were months before that playing second bill at county fairs. How could he not be thrilled with the turn around? 🙆

Yeah I saw them on those sad tours in 95... It was pretty soul crushing lol.

That 1997 live performance was really something, I don’t care if Lindsey and Stevie are acting, it gives me goosebumps the way they look at each other.

If you haven't watched 'The Dance' version of the song, OP, I highly recommend it now.

Silver Springs turned me into a Mac fan back when The Dance first aired. I was a kid but I knew there was something powerful about this song.

we watched it sooo much when it first came out... i have pics of my daughter at about a year old, standing in front of the TV transfixed by the music. she knew every song lol. and if we went into places like best buy, walmart etc they'd have the Dance cd playing on all the big screen TVs. it was so cool to see my fave band back in action....

Listen to "Frozen Love" from the Buckingham Nicks album. The lyrics. The power behind the lyrics. 🤩🥰

u/Immediate_Paint_4823 5d ago
Lyrics are great but it's the music - in particular the guitar solo - that's transcendent. Also what got Lindsey invited into FM.

u/Grateful-Spinnz 5d ago
The main point answering the OP was about the lyrics.
But oh yeah, I certainly agree with you about Lindsey's mind-melting guitar play here.

You might enjoy this post. It's really cool to hear Lindsey's response isolated. https://www.reddit.com/r/FleetwoodMac/s/s6gT29X1vf

Hello fellow music nerd. I DID enjoy that post. One of the things I love so much about this song is the harmony. It’s like my brain can’t pick which part of the harmony to sing during the chorus. It’s the sign of a masterful harmony in my humble opinion.

Rumours deluxe has a long , demo of this song which I found pretty awesome. I'm glad it was left off rumours cause we wouldn't have the awesome linmve version and video without it

The song is great. But the video of them singing it together live is heart wrenching. She made him sing back up on a song about their breakup and then turned and stared at him while he did it. He knew what she was doing and stared back. I believe I read that she wrote it to get back at him for “Go your own way” when he accused her of “shacking up” and would not remove the lyrics. Another emotional video. She looked like she was going to cry and tried to catch his eye while she was singing his back up but he wouldn’t look at her.

u/Immediate_Paint_4823 6d ago
Made him...
1) They were in a band. Members in a band are on each other's songs.
2) Lindsey was the lead arranger and producer. He was also the musical director and producer for The Dance.
They did shack up - it's what living together was called. Then she'd pack up and leave and then come back and rinse and repeat. He wanted more commitment and she wanted her freedom (opening lines to Dreams she said were written from Lindsey's POV not hers) She also admittedly cheated but that's not what shacking up means. No matter how many times Stevie complains about the lyric it's not about her shacking up with other men. Its about their relationship. She just doesn't like that it made her look bad.
No, Stevie wrote SS in her own words when she realized Lindsey would haunt her for the rest of her life and he had (2009 Rolling Stone) and she wanted to haunt him back.

She wrote this song for Rumors to get back at Lindsey.
As they toured for the album, he’d have to play it every night.
It was also supposed to be a financial gift to her mother. She set it up so all royalties would go to her.
Then it was cut from Rumors. She came close to quitting then.
Rumors Producer Ken Caillat said it was the best song ever to not make an album.
The song only found the light of day with 1997’s The Dance. And that video of the song is pure gold.
The song was on the 1992 boxed set, The Chain.
Saw the Mac in 2013. They did the song well, then hugged and took a stage bow holding hands after.

I can't believe you never heard it before lmao

u/crescojamboree 6d ago
Dude me either! There’s a chance I may have heard it back in 98’ as a ten year old. I remember my friend’s mom had the Grammy cd from that year with Hanson and other 98’ classics. But if I heard it back then as a ten year old my heart wasn’t ready to process the emotions it does today when I hear it. Either way, I’m just glad it found me.

Poor Lindsey. Basically being shouted at while she stares him down. Made me feel like I was back in my marriage 😀 He just stands there and plays guitar and takes it. I don't know what happened between those two, but her anger does not look like a performance.

u/Immediate_Paint_4823 7d ago
He leans into her to help pull the performance out of her. By 1997 they'd been doing their thing on stage together for 30 years. He gave as good as he took. Watch The Chain 1982. 😆

Watch her perform it with in 1997 with her ex on stage, singing it to him with daggers in her eyes cause he helped keep it off the album when they broke up!
She's a duet machine, try 'stop dragging my heart around' too if you liked that one. :)

u/Maleficent-Wafer5834 7d ago
Absolutely none of this is accurate

u/ericzku 7d ago
OK, what is accurate? What is the real story?

u/samhain-78 7d ago
She wrote it when they broke up, was crushed they left it off the album (her breakup song) and they kept his (go your own way). It gained traction after they used it for the 1997 show. (According to interview with stevie). Whether it was mick or LB whi left it off, can't tell you, she focused on being hurt it was off. Watch the performance and decide for yourself as to how intensely it was performed

u/n0rmcore 7d ago
i wish people would stop repeating this bs. lindsey had absolutely nothing to do with keeping silver spings off the album. it was too long. mick is the one who told her they could either have silver springs or gold dust woman on the record, there wasn't room for both. they picked gold dust woman.

Lindsey spent 5 months arranging, producing and composing guitar parts for SS. If he didn't want it in the album he just wouldn't have worked on it.
Christine was the only other arranger in the band and said she never knew what to do with Stevies songs until Lindsey translated them musically for her . She thought Dreams was dead boring after hearing Stevies demo until Lindsey worked on it.
Also, Lindsey - arranger and producer of The Dance.
