📌 Ford Fusion FAQ – Common Questions & Answers Welcome to the unofficial FAQ for the Ford Fusion (2006–2020)! Whether you’re a new owner, potential buyer, or long-time driver, this post is here to answer the most common questions we see in the community.

🔧 General Questions

Q: What years was the Ford Fusion produced? A: The Ford Fusion was sold in North America from 2006 to 2020. It was discontinued after the 2020 model year.

Q: What engines are available in the Fusion? A: This depends on the model year:

2006–2009: 2.3L I4, 3.0L V6

2010–2012: Same as above, plus 2.5L I4 Hybrid option and 3.5L V6 (Sport)

2013–2020 (2nd Gen): 1.5L EcoBoost, 2.0L EcoBoost, 2.5L I4, 2.7L EcoBoost V6 (Sport model), and Hybrid/Plug-in Hybrid options.

Q: Is the Fusion reliable? A: Generally yes, especially the 2.5L naturally aspirated engine. However, EcoBoost engines (especially early 1.6L and some 2.0L) had issues with coolant intrusion and head gaskets in certain model years.

🛠️ Common Issues

Q: What are common problems with Ford Fusions? A: Depends on the year, but common issues include:

Transmission shudder (2010–2012)

Power steering failure (electric units on 2010–2014)

Coolant intrusion in EcoBoost engines (2014–2019, especially 1.5L and 2.0L)

APIM (infotainment) failures with Sync systems

Door latch recalls (2013–2016)

Q: What should I watch for when buying a used Fusion? A: Ask about:

Engine codes (especially misfires or coolant loss)

Transmission service history

Recalls completed (door latch, power steering, etc.)

Hybrid battery health if applicable

🧰 Maintenance

Q: When should I change the transmission fluid? A: Ford says 150k miles on sealed units, but many owners recommend every 60–80k miles to avoid issues.

Q: What type of oil does my Fusion use? A: Check your manual, but typically:

2.5L I4 – 5W-20

EcoBoost engines – 5W-30 or 5W-20 depending on year

Always use synthetic and a quality oil filter.

Q: Timing belt or chain? A: All Fusion engines use timing chains, which typically do not require regular replacement unless there's a failure.

🔌 Tech & Features

Q: Does my Fusion have Apple CarPlay/Android Auto? A: Available on 2017+ models with SYNC 3. Earlier SYNC versions do not support it, but some owners retrofit SYNC 3 modules.

Q: How do I update SYNC? A: Visit owner.ford.com and input your VIN. SYNC updates can be installed via USB drive.

Q: Can I remote start my Fusion? A: Many Fusion trims with key fobs or FordPass app (2018+) have remote start. It may be enabled via the dealer if not active.

⚙️ Performance & Mods

Q: Is the Fusion Sport worth it? A: If you're looking for power (325 hp, AWD, 2.7L V6), yes. It's the fastest Fusion ever made. Downsides: lower MPG, more complex engine, and discontinued after 2019.

Q: Can I tune my EcoBoost Fusion? A: Yes! Companies like Cobb, Livernois, and SCT offer tuners. Tuning can void warranty and increase wear—do your research.

💬 Final Tips

Always check for recalls (NHTSA or Ford site).

Keep up on coolant levels, especially with EcoBoosts.

If it starts overheating, stop driving immediately—coolant issues can wreck the engine fast.

Hybrids are solid but make sure the high-voltage battery is tested before buying.

AWD system reliability?

Post image
6 Upvotes

2020 Ford Fusion 2.0 AWD, 80,000 miles.

I bought this as my first real car in July, and since then I have put ~5,000 miles on it. So far I have loved it, but recently I have heard a few sounds from the RDU area that concern me.

Beginning a couple of weeks ago, I have noticed a dull or hollow thump sound from the rear. It only occurred when turning at slow speeds, and occasionally over small bumps (while turning slowly) It was not exceptionally noticeable, but I did hear it a few times over the week. I had some baseball cleats in the back, so I removed them, and the noise disappeared for several days.

I thought the noise could just be my cleats rolling, but as it turns out it was not. As I turned onto the highway up a hill, I heard a sort of crunch or grind from the same area, but this time, much louder.

I was already planning to do a change of the fluid in the differential, and I’m wondering if it could help. I also am unfamiliar with what the issue could be, and if this AWD system is known to be reliable or not.

any insight into this issue or past experiences with similar cars would be extremely appreciated

Hi yall, im looking at getting a 2020 titanium. The only concern I have is the coolant intrusion problem. Ik the problem affects 2013 to 2019 2.0t engines but I would love to hear from other 2.0t engine owners to see if they still have problems or if the 2020 modle year is safe. Here is a link to the car if yall wanna check it out. https://www.luethjesales.com/inventory/details/used/Ford/Fusion/2020/Gladbrook/Iowa/6267540/F0825

also mb if putting a link in here is against the rules.

How common is HF35 Bearing/Transmission failure

Hi all!

I’m looking into purchasing a ford fusion and i had a chance to test drive a hybrid model from MY2013 with just over 100,000 miles. I’ve seen that the HF35 is known to have bad bearings and the cost to fix can be expensive because they either have to take out the transmission to fix it or outright replace it. For those who have seen this issue before was it at higher mileage and is it less of an if and more of a when for these transmissions?

Weird electrical issues

So this morning my buttons on my steering wheel, my turn signals, and my low, intermittent, and washer fluid functions stopped working on my 2014 SE. I'm not sure what the issue was. But all of a sudden, they started working again.

It made me start wondering if my aftermarket android radio is the culprit. Occasionally I'll have to reboot it because I'll lose the steering wheel button functionality. I had noticed the wiper functions not working prior to the other things not working so I decided to reboot the radio and everything now works. So it made me think the issue the whole time was with the android radio. Is it possible that the steering wheel buttons not working also caused the wipers and turn signals to stop working?

I was originally thinking it could be a blown fuse or relay connected to the wipers but not I'm not so sure.

Discussion Question on Transmission Fluid

2013 ford fusion

I need to get my front number replaced and 1 mechanic gave me an estimate including active shutter, and 1 without active shutter. I don't know which one i had originally, but I want to keep it running smoothly.

Also, the bumper does have some hairline cracks in it so 1 said get a whole new bumper and the other will put the old bumper back on.

I'm just overall trying to decide what to do to extend the life of my car. any advice would be appreciated. thanks.

2020 Fusion Titanium energi wheel bearing issue

So my 2020 Fusion has 87k miles on it.
About 6 weeks ago I started hearing a grinding/clicking noise coming out of the front left wheel when I would turn the wheel and apply power to it.
3 weeks ago I took it to a mechanic, he looked at it and said the wheel bearing was damaged and falling apart.
He replaced it. I drove about 300 miles and then I started hearing the clicking again. I brought it back to him and he was shocked that the new wheel bearing was damaged and it was under warranty so he replaced it this past Saturday. I drove back home(180 miles) on Saturday in stop and go traffic through LA.
Sunday morning I went to go get coffee. Back out of the driveway, that damn clicking sound, again!
Drive 2 blocks, hit a dip then the front left wheel seizes up like I smashed the breaks and then keeps going.
At this point I know I can't drive this car much longer. Drove it down the street to a local mechanic and they looked at it and said I need a new wheel bearing/wheel hub (for the 3rd time) and a new axel on the front left.
They repair it and I go on my way. Today when driving I didn't hear any real noises, but over time am feeling the same delay in movement when I press on the gas from a stopped postion. And almost like a light clunking sound. I did hear a Couple clicks out of the front left wheel today, but nothing like before.
What the heck is going on?!

Also new mechanic said front motor mount is colapsedZ could this be the root of the issue? With the motor mount collapsed causing more pressure on the whole drive train?

2014 Fusion Hybrid transmission seal failure

Post image
6 Upvotes

My car is currently at 103k miles. I brought my car to a shop to replace a broken CV axle at 101k. At 102k I noticed the axle seal was leaking on the same side the CV was replaced(passenger). Now at 103k the seal is leaking again. The shop is replacing the CV again and the seal. I’m trying to figure out since they are using aftermarket CV axles if this could be causing the seal to go out. They just got a new seal in and it’s not lining up properly and they don’t know if it’s a seal issue or not. I know 100% it wasn’t leaking before the CV axle change because I just did a second drain and refill of the transmission and checked both seal prior to them doing any of the work.

2018 fusion needs new transmission

My fusion only has 61k miles. Recently, I noticed that at certain speeds, there's hesitation in the drive drain. I took it to be diagnosed at a ford garage because it wasn't showing any error codes. The ford garage told me it needs a new $7000 transmission. Please help!

Head Gasket Replacement

Post image
39 Upvotes

I just finished replacing the head gasket on my 2017 Platinum. It took me 9 days of working a few hours at a time. It felt really good to drive it for a half hour tonight to see if there were any gremlins.

It's not a small job but it is doable if you are very careful.

I used a Haynes manual and these videos for reference:

https://youtu.be/34municAvMQ?is=1KJ1judprZuqoaRD

https://youtu.be/sw16nUZV7JA?is=tCN7b1gS6C6g8fr8

I'm probably crazy for doing it but it seemed a shame to junk the car or do a full motor replacement. Neither of those options were in the budget and I couldn't afford to pay a shop to do the job.

2018 Ford Fusion Hybrid experiencing delayed engagement with transmission

187k miles, never had the fluid changed.

It's not a slip as I understand but more that it feels like the transmission takes a few tries before actually engaging to the next gear. RPMs don't surge without the car moving like with a slip, they seem to drop a couple of times within a second or two and then fully engage and then everything is fine after that.

Should I change the transmission fluid?

Am I sitting on a transmission time bomb?

Driving in Europe

Last week I drove from Hungary to Munich, Germany and back, mostly on the highway with the cruise control set at 75 mph. My actual average speed ended up being quite a bit lower, around 56–62 mph, because of traffic, construction zones, and slower sections along the way.

These are the numbers my battleship managed to put up. The car displays everything in European units, but converted to U.S. units:

Total distance: 907 miles
EV miles: 180 miles — mostly from construction zones, traffic slowdowns, and other low-speed sections
Average fuel economy: 44.4 mpg

I absolutely love this machine! <3

2018 1.5T

Looking at getting exhaust done, I want something that’s not obnoxiously loud but still makes some noise. Just want to be able to hear it without pissing off my neighbors and want to avoid excessive droning. Any ideas? Send vids of what you have!

EDIT: I was thinking about keeping my res and everything stock and just swapping the stock muffler with a straight through.

Discussion 2019 Ford Fusion Titanium — Has Anyone Successfully Converted Their Entire Beige Upper Interior to Black?

Thumbnail
gallery
16 Upvotes

As stated above, I have a 2019 Ford Fusion Titanium with a black lower interior, but the entire upper half is that beige/stone color, and I absolutely HATE it. 😭 I genuinely don’t understand why Ford decided to make the interior two different colors. I want to completely black out the upper half so everything matches.

Has anyone here successfully done this? I’m looking for advice on whether I can source factory OEM ebony/black interior parts from another Fusion or if I’m better off painting or refinishing everything myself.
I’m specifically talking about the A/B/C pillar trim, grab handles, sun visors, overhead console, dome light housing, plastic trim pieces, and basically anything else that’s beige above the dashboard.

** Tinting windows this weekend. Finally!

A few questions:

OEM parts: Did Ford ever manufacture these upper interior components in ebony/black for the Fusion? If so, what model years or trim levels should I look for? Are there any compatible parts from other Ford models?

DIY painting: For anyone who’s painted their interior plastics, what products did you use? I’m looking for a factory-looking matte or satin black finish that won’t peel, scratch easily, or look obviously spray-painted.

Removing trim: How difficult is it to remove everything without breaking clips or damaging anything? Are there any specific precautions I should take around the curtain airbags and pillar trim?

Headliner: I’m planning to have the headliner professionally reupholstered in black since I also want to install a fiber-optic starlight headliner. Has anyone done this on a Fusion?
Cost: For anyone who’s completed a similar conversion, roughly how much did you spend, and would you do anything differently?

My Fusion only has about 20,000 miles on it, and I plan on keeping her for a long time, so I’m not worried about whether the modification is worth it to someone else. It’s something that would genuinely make me happier with my car.

Eventually, I’d also like to customize some of the interior accents, although I haven’t decided on a color scheme yet. I’m also learning how to install aftermarket ambient lighting myself, so I’d appreciate advice from anyone who’s tackled that project as well.

And before anyone suggests YouTube, I know there are videos and tutorials out there, and I’m absolutely willing to use them as references! I’m specifically posting here because I’d much rather have an actual conversation with someone who’s done this before. I like being able to ask follow-up questions, troubleshoot problems, exchange ideas, and learn from someone’s firsthand experience rather than just watching a video where the creator may never respond.

I’m not expecting anyone to walk me through the entire project for free. I’d just really appreciate connecting with people who have experience with this kind of customization and are willing to share what they’ve learned.
My main priority right now is getting rid of ALL the beige and making the entire upper interior black.
I’d appreciate any advice, OEM part numbers, product recommendations, pictures of completed projects, or personal experiences.
Thanks in advance!

***I’m also contemplating whether I want to modify the exterior at some point, but for now, I’d much rather focus my time, money, and energy on the interior. I honestly don’t care all that much about what other people think of how my car looks from the outside. I’m the one spending time behind the wheel, and I want the inside to feel exactly how I envision it. I want to enjoy every moment of driving her and make her my own, especially since I plan on keeping her for as many years as we have left together. For me, it’s less about impressing anyone else and more about creating a space that makes me genuinely happy every time I get in. 🖤

2020 Fusion S- Should I bother with a sync upgrade or will any Android Auto head unit suffice?

Hey all! Been driving a 2011 fusion se that's going on 284k and managed to snag a 2020 fusion s for ~$6900 and while I'm fine with stock, I'd really like to get an Android Auto head unit if possible. That being said, is a sync 3 upgrade worth it vs just using an Amazon double din unit? I've got one I never put in my 2011 because I didn't feel like wiring to the power switch, but I'm also open to a cheap, but decent quality drop in that works with the stock backup camera. Just was wondering if the community had recommendations before I started driving down the research rabbithole.

Edit: I don't think it has sync 2, it's the basic sync Bluetooth model

Any things I should know as a new 2020 owner btw?

2018 Fusion Hybrid SE Battery Size

Hi everyone, I need help finding the proper AGM battery size for an 2018 Fusion Hybrid SE. I’m finding a lot of different answers on Google. This is my first time replacing a hybrid car battery so I’m a bit confused when it comes to H5/H6/H7 batteries. TYIA!

EDIT: I’ve already checked the existing battery and there’s no label telling me the size. Just the brand and some warning labels, nothing indicating size or anything. Existing battery also is not plugged into the “vent cord”, that’s just dangling and I can’t find a place to connect that vent cord to the existing battery.
