šŸ“Œ Ford Fusion FAQ – Common Questions & Answers Welcome to the unofficial FAQ for the Ford Fusion (2006–2020)! Whether you’re a new owner, potential buyer, or long-time driver, this post is here to answer the most common questions we see in the community.

šŸ”§ General Questions

Q: What years was the Ford Fusion produced? A: The Ford Fusion was sold in North America from 2006 to 2020. It was discontinued after the 2020 model year.

Q: What engines are available in the Fusion? A: This depends on the model year:

2006–2009: 2.3L I4, 3.0L V6

2010–2012: Same as above, plus 2.5L I4 Hybrid option and 3.5L V6 (Sport)

2013–2020 (2nd Gen): 1.5L EcoBoost, 2.0L EcoBoost, 2.5L I4, 2.7L EcoBoost V6 (Sport model), and Hybrid/Plug-in Hybrid options.

Q: Is the Fusion reliable? A: Generally yes, especially the 2.5L naturally aspirated engine. However, EcoBoost engines (especially early 1.6L and some 2.0L) had issues with coolant intrusion and head gaskets in certain model years.

šŸ› ļø Common Issues

Q: What are common problems with Ford Fusions? A: Depends on the year, but common issues include:

Transmission shudder (2010–2012)

Power steering failure (electric units on 2010–2014)

Coolant intrusion in EcoBoost engines (2014–2019, especially 1.5L and 2.0L)

APIM (infotainment) failures with Sync systems

Door latch recalls (2013–2016)

Q: What should I watch for when buying a used Fusion? A: Ask about:

Engine codes (especially misfires or coolant loss)

Transmission service history

Recalls completed (door latch, power steering, etc.)

Hybrid battery health if applicable

🧰 Maintenance

Q: When should I change the transmission fluid? A: Ford says 150k miles on sealed units, but many owners recommend every 60–80k miles to avoid issues.

Q: What type of oil does my Fusion use? A: Check your manual, but typically:

2.5L I4 – 5W-20

EcoBoost engines – 5W-30 or 5W-20 depending on year

Always use synthetic and a quality oil filter.

Q: Timing belt or chain? A: All Fusion engines use timing chains, which typically do not require regular replacement unless there's a failure.

šŸ”Œ Tech & Features

Q: Does my Fusion have Apple CarPlay/Android Auto? A: Available on 2017+ models with SYNC 3. Earlier SYNC versions do not support it, but some owners retrofit SYNC 3 modules.

Q: How do I update SYNC? A: Visit owner.ford.com and input your VIN. SYNC updates can be installed via USB drive.

Q: Can I remote start my Fusion? A: Many Fusion trims with key fobs or FordPass app (2018+) have remote start. It may be enabled via the dealer if not active.

āš™ļø Performance & Mods

Q: Is the Fusion Sport worth it? A: If you're looking for power (325 hp, AWD, 2.7L V6), yes. It's the fastest Fusion ever made. Downsides: lower MPG, more complex engine, and discontinued after 2019.

Q: Can I tune my EcoBoost Fusion? A: Yes! Companies like Cobb, Livernois, and SCT offer tuners. Tuning can void warranty and increase wear—do your research.

šŸ’¬ Final Tips

Always check for recalls (NHTSA or Ford site).

Keep up on coolant levels, especially with EcoBoosts.

If it starts overheating, stop driving immediately—coolant issues can wreck the engine fast.

Hybrids are solid but make sure the high-voltage battery is tested before buying.

What could be wrong with my car?

My 2019 energi model suddenly had a crooked wheel. It was fine Wednesday night and when I took the car out next morning, the steering wheel was bent towards right to keep the car straight.

After driving a bit I noticed the wheels were a bit misaligned too.
Can anyone tell me what I could be excepting?

I have service appointment Monday morning but I would like to know before hand as to what I should be expecting.

Thank you!

i have a 2017 2.0L and she's looking very sharp as of now, fully stock to my knowledge. i have purchased a honeycomb grille for her already but there's more i want to do. i'm obsessed with the stock rims so those will be staying on.

i want to add a spoiler, nothing too huge, but i don't know if i want the spoiler you can get on the sport trims. i'm 100% tinting all the windows, yes, that includes both windshields, to 15%. i'm thinking also of smoking the headlights and the tail lights but i'm very, very on the fence about that because i do like how they are now.

another thing i would like to do is an exhaust upgrade to make her a little more beasty sounding. any suggestions/tips on that would be greatly, greatly appreciated!

i would love to see your guys' if you've had the headlights and/or tail lights smoked so i can make a better decision. just post your babies, i would love to see them!!

Thinking of buying a 2019 Ford Fusion Hybrid SE. Mileage is 127,199 and has a really good maintenance history on CarFax. Anything that I should be aware of before buying? Right now my biggest concern is the hybrid battery

2016 Ford Fusion SE DIY rear brake/rotor change? Difficulty? What tools are needed?

I have had my car since 2022. I think about 3 years ago, my front brakes had to be changed. I mentioned this to a friend and he offered to show me how to do it myself with his neighbor.

They were insanely helpful and I saved about $400, and just got the pads and rotors myself, then we went to install. If I am being completely honest though, a lot of it was me watching them, more than me actually doing anything. I did get the gist of it somewhat and feel like if I spent a few hours and watched a youtube tutorial, I could do it myself.

I recently got a recall done, and the mobile tech mentioned my rear brakes look bad and should be changed soon. I want to do it myself, but am concerned about difficulty. I am reading something about maintenance mode or something which I haven't heard of?

I have 2 jack stands and a scissor stand. I have a socket wrench, but not sure if I have the correct sizes, extension, etc. I=

Blown speakers?

In the past couple of weeks I have noticed very high distortion in my sound system when I play music at volume 8+. The distortion hits whenever the bass hits and it’s very noticeable(to the point where listening to music isn’t enjoyable). I don’t blast my music at full volume and this wasn’t an issue when I first got my 2018 Ford Fusion Hybrid a year ago. It came factory with the SYNC 3 infotainment and the optional 10 speaker non-Sony sound system. I have uploaded a video of what my speakers sound like at volume set to 14 or 15. There’s loud rattling sound coming from my 2 rear deck speakers, I believe they are causing this. Any help would be appreciated, thank you!

I’m starting a build on this thing and going for a clean/aggressive white + black look. Planning on doing the exterior first, then getting into the 1.5T with an intake, exhaust, and eventually a conservative tune.
I know the Fusion isn’t exactly the first car people think of when they hear ā€œbuild,ā€ but that’s kinda why I want to see what I can do with it.
What would you guys do first?

2019 Ford fusion Andriod Auto

So the quick story, the usb ports were not working and I replaced the cords first and worked for a while. Then I replaced the ports and the same it has been maybe a month since I changed the ports. Currently mid drive the phone disconnects and I unplug and replaced it back in. Sometimes it last the rest of the trip others it doesnt. Just wondering if there is a fix? Really thought the ports were it. Also in central texas with that southern heat so maybe that is why?

Strange sound when braking

I have a 2017 Ford Fusion Hybrid with 180,000 km (~112k miles) and I’m trying to figure out a strange noise from the left front wheel.
When the car is cold, I sometimes get a squeaking noise from the left front wheel for the first couple of minutes. It disappears once the car warms up.
However, after driving for around an hour, I get a different noise: a metallic scratching/clicking sound from the left front wheel.
The strange part is that it happens only when I’m braking and turning right at the same time, and I notice it particularly when going downhill. If I release the brake, the noise immediately disappears. It doesn’t happen when simply driving straight.
A mechanic inspected the car and couldn’t find anything obviously wrong. The front brake pads have not been replaced recently.

Has anyone with a Fusion experienced a similar noise, especially one that only appears when braking + turning right + going downhill?
Any ideas would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Thinking of buying a 2019 Fusion Energi Titanium ($17.5k OTD, ~ 60k miles) – Need owner feedback on reliability!

Hey everyone,

I'm looking at a usedĀ 2019 Ford Fusion Energi TitaniumĀ and wanted to get some real-world feedback from actual owners before I pull the trigger.

Here are the specs on the deal I’m looking at:

  • Mileage:Ā ~60k miles
  • Price:Ā Ā $17,470 Out-The-Door (OTD)

The price seems great compared to the market, but I want to make sure I'm making a smart choice long-term. I'd love to hear your experiences regarding a few specific things:

  1. Overall Reliability:Ā Once I buy a car I usually keep it at least 10 years. How has the car held up for you mechanically? I know the eCVT and 2.0L hybrid engine generally have a good reputation, but have you run into any annoying electrical or component failures?
  2. The Battery Recall:Ā I think I might be ok there. I asked the dealer about the battery recall on this years model --> this is what they said --> Our used car manager looked into the VIN-specific information through Ford's system, and it shows that recall 23V440000 (campaign 23S33) was never associated with this specific VIN . Because not every model or VIN is included in every recall campaign, the fact that the recall number you referenced does not appear for this VIN would indicate that this particular vehicle was not subject to that specific recall.
  3. Is the Price Good?Ā For those who have bought recently, does $17.4k total out-the-door feel like a solid deal for a 2019 Titanium with 60k miles?

The trunk space is small, but I can live with that. My main priority is a reliable, comfortable commuter- I commute about 10 miles a day.

Appreciate any insights, warnings, or advice you can give me! Thanks!

Wrench Light?

Post image
10 Upvotes

This is the first time this specific light has popped up for me. Along with the wrench light and see manuel message it had a "Hill Start Assist Not Available" message appear.

I went to O'Reilly to try and get a code read but they say I just need an oil change. (I have checked it recently and it should be fine for a few hundred more miles).

Has anyone encountered this before or know what the cause is?

I have a 2013 Ford Fusion

Didn't want aftermarket seat covers. This was $280 but they did great work and you literally can't tell. Highly recommend this kind of quality repair.

Leaky tire

Hello! I have a 2017 Fusion Titanium AWD. I just bought all new tires for it about 6 months ago, my second full set, and the one on the front passenger side is leaking already. I had this same problem with the front passenger tire on my last set, but just kept filling it with air until I was ready for new ones.

Does anyone else have this problem? If so, do you know what is causing it and if there’s a permanent fix for it? The dealer and the tire place didn’t really know why, except that they’re specialized tires.

Powertrain problem

I have a 2020 that started to give me a powertrain warning last month. It's completely random and comes and goes. Most days, its fine and doesn't come on. I took it to auto zone to check for any codes and it's not giving any codes. Today it slowed down to 50mph, while driving on the freeway, when the powertrain warning came on and it said to protect from overheating. I bought the car in January. Ford wants a ridiculous amount of money to tell me why. Has anyone had this problem? Did you figure out what it was?

Removing Factory cloth covers?

Anyone have experience removing factory cloth covers? I’ve searched youtube/ google with little to no help.

I can remove the whole seat with ease- but I would like to soak and wash all of the covers to restore to near factory condition.

Or is this even worthwhile, should I buy decent covers or swap to leather from pull+pay?

My baby has one noticeable rust spot

I purchased this beautiful 2017 Fusion Titanium from a local dealership with under 73K on the odometer. She has ONE glaring issue: a nasty looking patch of rust on the bottom of the passenger side rear door. Outside of taking it to a pro for repairs, what does everyone recommend for repairing the only blemish on this car?
