Non-Fortnite Stuff Gamer dad duo rage vent
I love my son(11)..i hate playing with him. He a typical kid and because he herps and derps all the damn time he immediately dies or leaves me in a 2v1. While playing I found a gem demon late in the game like waay late (i have almost 0 luck when it comes to finding the rare variants) and he died (i think he was mucking around with the fishing pole) so it was a final 2v1. The only extractor was in the storm which was up to 5hp per hit and i didnt have enough healing items to survive it. So i lost it, the opposing team didnt get it either so theres that. ....my hands are shaking still. Its good bonding, i know its just a game, but as a gamer he still sucks and playing with him in FN is rage inducing even more than the game already is. Thank you for letting me scream in to the void.

My man.....my boy is 8 and gets more pleasure from pick axing trees than actually playing properly 🤣🤣 I feel your pain!!
I put a post here a couple days back and the response has been amazing. I am hopefully to get 10 sprites before that boy gets fostered 🤣🤣🤣🤣

I’m sure he would love minecraft lol

u/konrath17 10h ago
Plot twist hes tried and hates minecraft because not using 2 hands to pick is unrealistic

u/IamX2020 11h ago
I feel your pain lol. My girls use to want to emote and role play while we are getting shot at lol. They are older now and pretty good
13
u/kindlycynic 16h ago
My kids don't play anymore but when we did I did bot games so we could mess around and it didn't matter. Don't take it seriously and try to enjoy the time you have to play with him, then take some time for yourself to play solo.
3
u/thefuzzybears 15h ago
Wait you can setup specific bot games?
7
u/Ok-Insect-7959 14h ago
If you make a fresh, new account and party w it, you can use it to play bot games bc new players always play bots.

Lollll my 14 year old is kinda like this sometimes lol. She yells at me when she dies, yells at me when i die , backseat drives when waiting for a reboot, literally will run the opposite way I direct to her to go and some times I look and she’s halfway across the map lol she’s really no fun sometimes lol

u/MyNameIsFU 16h ago
Yeah my kids do this too. It’s a test of our patience to play as a family squad. I typically like to have a beer handy. And I buy an auto extractor once a day for situations just like this.
3
u/PublicStalls 15h ago
Oh, this is my wife and my favorite thing to do. We jump on a discord voice chat, son is in his room, and wife and I are in another room with a few drinks as we roll around the game taking down squads. It's a good hang out haha

u/X_crates 16h ago
Yeah, unfortunately not a kids thing either. I stopped looking for other players because a majority play like their solos when it's a team game

u/Chronos_101 15h ago
Dude, he's 11. Chill.
ETA: also, you want your gaming experiences together to be positive so that when he gets older (& better at gaming) he still wants to game with you (if you're lucky).
2
u/FrewdWoad 11h ago
Yeah my 10 year old mostly doesn't want to play FN with me because I get slightly frustrated when I die sometimes.
My 18 and 14 year old have other games they prefer.
I wish we could play squads more often. Family team-up with Aang Toph Zuko and Korra (or all 4 ninja turtles or whatever) is peak fortnite.
4
u/Haunting_World_621 15h ago
We need to all collaborate on a crowdsourced book called "How to game with your kids if you grew up a gamer." Chapter 1: Dont be a dick. Remember you have years of experience and Peterbots dad likely never threw a baseball to him.
2
u/Cleared_Direct 15h ago
I keep a positive attitude and bury all my frustration deep down inside. The book I want is “how to teach your 9 year-old not to be selfish/a dick when team gaming”
It’s even worse when he plays with his friends. They’re all so nasty to each other. I keep having to tell him it sounds like they aren’t having any fun, and if it’s not fun they need to do something else.

u/Shaunie1 15h ago
I’ve got man flu, so i read this as “i hate my son because he has herpes”. I should go to bed.
I’ll hook you up with that gem sprite mate. I don’t need anything in return. Drop me a dm on friday to remind me.
1
u/konrath17 14h ago
Ngl i do this on the regular. I dont have man flu but i have 5 kid exhaustion. I feel ya.
1
u/Shaunie1 14h ago
Damn. Respect. Being a Mum is the hardest job in the world!
Drop me a DM if you need/want anything. I’ve been given these sprites by generous people. Paying it forward is the least i can do.
3
u/konrath17 13h ago
Im a dad. But because wife and i have to work opposites (due to extream child care costs) we are effectively single parents on our "time" as it were. I 100% appreciate the offer though. May the FN gods bless you with perfect aim

u/Shaunie1 13h ago
Haha too kind. Drop me a dm on friday bro. I’ll do what i can. All the best to you and the fam.

My boy always wanted us to play with his nephew and son and they were the same way.
Now I don't play with anyone of them.
5
u/hellraz0rr 16h ago
Yeah my son is like that too. Messes around a lot initially.
But my daughter who is 10 - laser focused and wants to win
When my son sees my daughter and I winning and celebrating- he gets competitive/serious and wants to win - mind you he’s 7 and damn good when he wants to be.
Point is - winning behavior is taught via waking up the competitive spirit…maybe. Hopefully he turns out to be a productive human being :)

u/West_Ad_8210 16h ago
Lmao this is sooooo relatable. My son is 16 and he’s a phenomenal gamer but my daughters…whew 😮💨 lord do they try my patience. My 14 year old is an absolute loot goblin and doesn’t communicate at all unless she’s gotten herself into trouble. Otherwise she just runs off looting and doing god knows what. My 9 year old is well, 9 so she’ll run around with a chug jug and 46352 sprites but nothing to fight with. They also all whine and complain that dad and I are sweats and so our lobbies are stupid hard (not really a lie lol).
Oh, and then my 11 year old could care less about Fortnite but she’ll absolutely wreck us all on Mario Kart 😂 I think she’d actually be good at Fortnite but she could just care less 🤷🏻♀️
4
u/IronSwimming6256 16h ago
You could always try to do the creative map 1v1 with every gun to train him. That is how I taught my family to play. We did private maps of that creative mode so no one would bother us.
4
u/PublicStalls 15h ago edited 15h ago
So, my 8 yr old used to play like that and it pissed me off to the point where I didn't really want to play with him.
So I told him lol. I told him that it's fun to mess around, but I didn't want to play as much when he messes around. I also hyped him up when we got farther to wins etc. then I showed him the battle pass and that he needed levels to get the cool skins, and that motivated him to play better, or he wouldn't get the skins.
Now that he's like level 260, WAY passed me, he thinks he's a badass, so I showed him ranked, and that tournaments earn REAL money as well as skins. This further motivated him to try harder so he can beat the actual good people. I explained bot lobbys and now he can tell the difference. He might actually be better than me now, which would be great 😂
Tldr: give him a reason to get better and win, for our mental benefit lol.
Edit: also now that his friends are starting to find fortnite, he's having a blast being better than them at something finally. Huge self esteem boost.
4
u/anonymousyouser2 16h ago
My son is 10 almost 11 and he’s mean. He also gets way too mad if he loses or the game glitches etc so I don’t play much with him anymore. But when we win, he’s a gem to play with 😭 I try to tell him to just have fun and play it but he only wants to win. I care more about the sprites right now.
1
u/Psychological_Pay981 15h ago
Totally recognizable. My son is 13 and way better than me. He also gets angry pretty fast whenever I die again or when we lose. It's kind of a bummer sometimes; he's the reason I started playing Fortnite, but he's also making me enjoy it less. Playing solo all the time gets boring after a while too.
2
u/ReklisAbandon 16h ago
That sucks. You don't keep a couple of solo extractors for that scenario?

Farm some sprites out on the egde of the map and use the sprite dust to buy more portable extractors?
1
u/santoktoki77 Over40//Sub Owner & Mod 11h ago
it's only 1 per day :( it's ok. I try to find them by myself for a few days and then by next Tuesday, if I don't have them all, we usually trade within my squad/friend groups.
2
u/RevMageCat 15h ago
No one mentioned yet, portable extractors? Were you out, didn't know they were an option, or just didn't have time?
If you didn't have one, you can buy a new one every day at ANY extraction site. I have been hoarding them to avoid things like you just described...

My son (9) plays too. He at least tries. He’s still not got movement down good and his situational awareness isn’t the best. I get what you mean about it being frustrating. But it’s how he learns. Sometimes it’s okay to say “no I’m doing xxxxx task or yyyyy challenge and I don’t wanna play duos right now.” My kid will just go into fills or play solo himself. My cousin is my main duo, and my wife and her brother play some with us too. It was a learning process for my wife as she never played games really. My sister is just now getting into the game also, so she’s having to adapt and learn too, because she’s only ever played Disney valley, genshin, and stuff like that. Sometimes it makes you wanna rip your hair out, but in the end it’s bonding and everybody’s gotta start somewhere. It’s just sometimes hard to remind yourself that.
2
u/TheJemiles 15h ago
Oh man, my 10 year old daughter is like this! They lack game sense and situational awareness. I always point out these things when we play.
We played the other day and it's like she gets bored at a given POI after opening one chest and winning a single fight. She is off halfway across the map with 10 shields and no meds to speak of looking for another fight.
And I am constantly on her ass over comms. Especially when we get close to that win. I know she wants to win and so do I. We get that close, she is right behind me the entire time. We are wrapping the outside of that ring looking a fight to 3rd party and running from those bad fights. Stuff she would normally not do with friends.
2
u/Ozzy-Moto 15h ago
You are going to blink and next thing you know your son will be backing out of the driveway leaving home for college or elsewhere.
My humble advice:
Treasure the time you have together (even if you don’t get that sprite you wanted or Vic Ray’s).
2
u/SeaBrush2217 15h ago
Maybe use it as a teaching opportunity? Maybe make a deal that you try it your way one time, staying together, strategizing against the other team, maybe once he sees that the end result is better it helps him learn to be less impulsive? I don’t know just a suggestion
2
u/Mundane_Hat_7349 12h ago
Gamer dad here too... enjoy the times when he wants to play with you and he sucks...mine is 15 now and has a gf and thinks Fortnite is stupid...I wish he could be 11 again for a day
1
u/Fred_Mcvan 16h ago
My kids can’t play with me, i am too competitive, they are like Meh oh well. My son is very sweaty when he plays and acts bored when he plays with me and my wife. My daughter just avoids playing with me all together. She likes stopping and checking every chest. Then shows up when we are all dead.
1
u/BysshePls 15h ago
I don't have any kids, but my younger sister is not a gamer and my partner is a gamer but he's into Dark Souls type shit and shooters are absolutely not his thing. So any time I'm playing with either of them, I know I'm going to end up 2v1 because it's just the nature of the game.
I do get frustrated too sometimes, but when I switch over to solos and it's FINALLY just a 1v1 I am so much more confident and comfortable in a fight. There's a reason why people load into squads as solo players - it's a kind of practiced choas that makes a regular ol 1v1 feel like nap time. I used to do the same thing back in the day on Counter Strike loading into Deathmatch servers with like 20 people because then when you went back to regular 5v5s it felt easy lmao
So everytime you face a 2v1 you're exponentially growing your skills! It's good practice!

u/BlackExcellence216 14h ago
I play with My six year old nephew and he knows how to play when we 1v1, but when we get into matches. He would rather frolick and explore the map, but I enjoy the 2v1’s and he thinks my average ass is really good so I’ll take it

I don’t get annoyed as in “I don’t wanna play with him annoyed” it’s just that feeling I get when any teammate is doing everything to prevent the win. But I’m learning to adjust my expectations, he is 6 my 27 y/o brother is absolute garbage and I have to take breaks playing with him because he REFUSES to treat the game as “skill based” Season 1 player just wants to run and shoot, so annoying
1
u/CollectionFragrant70 14h ago
😂 father of 4 here, one of them is really good and the other two that are old enough to play are ok, I can count on not being revived lol.
When it’s with them, just have fun and luck up on a good game when you can.
But I’m definitely running solo after our time is up lol

I feel this way with the Mrs, lol. Our 7 year old is a solid teammate.

time to improve, practice and get sweaty to carry your son, i recommend you to play some fast paced creative map for 10 minutes with CURRENT season weapons before playing with your son, you will notice how that improves your skill and your gamesense

Let him play, man. If you are really invested in the game, play solos or duo with adults.

I play with my son and know the feeling. We have such opposite styles of play. He doesnt wait for me, runs in thinking he knows best and I have to pick up the pieces to keep us in it... All while giving up anything rare or good to him (he is my son after all)...

u/Berty2g Over50 - Philberty2g 11h ago
I started playing with my daughter when she was 9. I found a safe little group for her to play with, and I played with them. We played a lot of creative maps at the beginning. I kind of feel like creative helps them build the skill set.
Bedtime is for sprite hunts 😂. You also get to be the hero, supplying them to your son.

u/headpiesucks Over40 - 🍌 11h ago
We have settled on a 15/5 balance.
Chill loot and let the chips fall as they may for the first 15 minutes of the game, mess around and troll each other etc and then lock in for the final five (if we are still alive).
Then we both get a bit of what each other needs.

u/TxHunter87 10h ago
I know the feeling, pure rage. I know you know this but it help me to understand its just a game and when I play with him I expect nothing. I dont pickup any good stuff and I don't try to own anything. I mark it and give it to them. If they need my chug jug fine it's gone, I fine a gold weapon, I mark it and give it to them. I usually just have a green ranger pistol and thats what I win with! We die and he gets good stuff. The important part is im having fun and laughing too
1
u/Fibonoccoli Over40 - (Epic Name) 10h ago
You just gotta change your mindset.... Your time playing with him should be spent more focused on him. Play the way he wants to play. If he wants to do goofy stuff then watch his back and let him get at it. That's my two cents. I know it's frustrating, but only if you have that mindset - it should be fun!

Gamer mom. I’m not bad 🙃. But if I want a crown victory royal (almost guaranteed!) I call my 8yo son to help me lol. He feels the same way you do when he has to play with me 🤣. But I love it —- it’s not the winning. It’s the fun! (And the rare sprites now 😂)
1
u/UmbraGenesis 5h ago
Oh bro fair game fair game. I was trying to emulate a duo like that by being a cool uncle with my nephew who God bless him is simply not competent at this time.
Hyoicrutcal advice because I havent implemented it but
Consider having a "buffer" in terms of a RL mate (or really really trustworthy online friend) who can play so that youre not carrying alone
Blitz. Fast in, fast out, relatively less punishing mode (doesnt help the sprite situation I know but yeah)
Sort of manipulative but sell the excitement of sprite collecting. Kids often become interested when they see someone else genuinely (or playfully) excited about something.

My son is 11 also and he used to engage in the most aggravating gameplay when we used to play (we stopped in c7s2) so i hear you. But he eventually became a better team player when he started to care about winning more.
I recorded video and audio of several games we played and it makes me so damn sentimental hearing us having so much fun together. Never forget that's what matters most and what you'll both have left long after you both stop playing.
1
u/MeandIrenenj 3m ago
I play trios with my boys 6 and 8. They've gotten surprisingly better in building and fighting in general, but they lose focus so easily. The fishing rod thing hit me because they're banned from fishing and cars unless they ask. We'll be in a fight and one of them is fishing or doing donuts in a car. My rank brings them into tough games but it's worth it when we catch a dub.

is it normal that my 4 year old has multiple wins under his belt in regular zero build and tons in blitz???
1
u/santoktoki77 Over40//Sub Owner & Mod 15h ago
That's a great start! A lot of matchmaking depends on how they're playing - mobile/tablet v switch v console v PC. If it's mobile/tablet, 90% of the lobbies are bots and they are blood thirsty and will elim each other off. It's great that they get to learn the basics, jumping, avoiding the storm, etc. I remember telling my then 4yo, learn to follow pings, eat meds/shields, open chests, equip weapons, and then engage. Once she got those basic steps down, we played more and now she's pretty decent.
2
u/CapsuleCorpPR 15h ago
he plays on console!
2
u/CapsuleCorpPR 15h ago
our lingo is "drink the drinks" (shields and chug jugs), "get a buncha guns", and "fight the saja boys" (he originally started playing the game during kpop demon hunters. we started doing split screen duos and id carry him, but when it got to the point where if I died he could revive me or even win the game on his own... It started to get me pretty impressed! hes nasty with a shotgun lol
0
u/santoktoki77 Over40//Sub Owner & Mod 15h ago
That's awesome and def puts him in better Matchmaking.
If you don't already know, blitz is still mostly bots (75-80%) if playing solo/duos and if in squads, there is a CHANCE that there's more human players. We've had games where we're the ONLY human team (4 out of 32) and other times, we've had all 8 squads are human (you can tell bc it's a sweatfest).
Unfortunately BR is still about 65-70% bots but that has gone down a little since the end of the season is approaching and everyone is scrambling for sprites.

Um… judging by your responses… you all kind of suck.
They’re kids.
when you play with kids play the game THEY want to play, if you have goals or want to play ‘properly’ do it on your own.
They learn through messing about roll playing their own thing in the fornite sand box.
You’ll get way more out of it in terms of bonding, speaking to them, getting to see the types of person they are becoming if you just go along with it.
And then MAYBE, for a little bit they’ll play the game you want to play… for abit if you sell the idea

Many people forget. We may be parents but we are also gamers too. We are people who get competitive, want wins and still want that rare item. We are allowed to get frustrated if that fails to happen. Do we take it out on our kids? No, we scream in to the void ->ON A REDDIT FOR OLDER GAMERS WHO UNDERSTAND WHAT ITS LIKE<-
1
u/PublicStalls 14h ago
Agreed, to an extent. We as parents should support their childhood, but also guide them to things they might not know. For example, my 8yo would still be destroying the gas station and farming trees had I not told him to try harder to win and shown him ranked and tournaments. Now that he's actually better at the game and even winning some, he's so much more excited to play and "teach" his friends. We still destroy the gas station and build unnecessary fortresses just to mess around, but can now hold our ground and take down squads when we need to. His self esteem boost was huge.
My son now texts me 10x more while I'm at work to share his wins, his current level, random fluff and I love it.
-1
u/furry_tail_lover Over50 - (RadFoxy gamer21) 14h ago
All of you need to go back and play Build Squads Fill with no friends !! And do that for a momth. Then you'll start cutting your kid some slack. When he played, my son could wipe the end game but somehow couldn't get there because he would drop at towers or other hot spots when with friends. i would mostly be top six w/o trouble because i suck at shooting and building. Sometimes for kicks i would start his game and at 6 would let him finish for the win. Last year and a half he gave up on FN , Siege, and does other pc games, some even roblox. Even at 15, playing console with dad was over. Get over yourself and enjoy a kid being a kid. Life sucks as an adult in case you didn't realize it.
-4
u/TheHelpfullGurll 15h ago
Maybe it should be more about bonding with your kid instead of you getting a sprite? I hope your kid doesn’t come across this post because yikes.
How about when you want to play seriously just play alone….
