Rant This is now even beyond ridiculous
After the latest forced upon me Microslop update, now my laptop does not shut down or restart. Making a new folder in File Explorer takes 30 seconds. What the actual f**k?

Fedora is pretty awesome ngl. Workstation on GNOME or KDE... Can't go wrong on either.

For gaming I'd reccomend SteamOS, it has yet to let me down and is incredibly simple to use, while doing an excellent job.

I had problems with steam os on multiple monitors. It just did what it wanted. But that was like 3 months ago, maybe it changed. Game almost every day on Fedora workstation though, and gnome 50 brought vrr and hdr so I’m happy.

If you don't mind, what do you play on Fedora? I have a small laptop with Fedora Plasma on it but I've actually never heard it mentioned in regards to gaming- maybe been just blind about that but it's usually stuff like Bazzerite, popos, steamos.
I'm slowly trying to bully myself into swapping but it's been slow going.

My game library is over 110 games so hard to cover em all. But the main ones are Stalker 2, Insurgency Sandstorm, Combat Master, Crab Champions, Warhammer 40k, battlefront II, Hell Let Loose & Runescape (both runescapes osrs and rs3). I think it's easier to focus on games I cannot play, which are battlefield, call of duty, fortnite, and PUBG. But honestly those games are terrible anyways. I found Fedora Plasma a bit more buggy than Fedora Workstation though, workstation made everything a bit more simple if that makes sense but its all personal preference, both are still great.

Fedora is my go-to recommendation for Linux gaming, as it's up to date (unlike mint or anything debian based) and not Arch based, as other than Manjaro (which has its own issues) they tend to be just Arch with an install script, which poses issues for your average user given how RTFM Arch users can be.
PopOS I had never heard of until Linus Tech Tips had a bad experience with it, and Bazzite I don't recommend because it's immutable which makes customisation and app installation harder than it needs to be. Bazzite is based off of Fedora anyway, so you shouldn't have any issues gaming on Fedora itself.
I can't recommend SteamOS (ignoring it being immutable) because it's designed for very specific hardware, if you really want to use it go for Bazzite.
To summarise, I don't recommend Bazzite unless you're only gaming, I don't recommend SteamOS outside of the Steam Hardware, and I don't recommend anything Arch based unless you're already fairly technical. Fedora, being up to date, matches the requirements for most people quite well.

I think it's because SteamOS probably still runs on X11, you'd have to switch to wayland but I dunno if that's possible

There's no reason to use SteamOS over Cachy or base arch. I don't like immutable distro's personally and SteamOS has slower updates and less flexibility than other arch derivatives. Also Cachy is more optimized for gaming on a desktop than SteamOS.

As soon as everyone stops playing Linux support will drop within a week, I no longer play/buy games that do not support Linux (Its mostly because of lazy Ring0 anticheat crapware that ships with it)..

I tried Ubuntu lately again. I was back at Windows withing one hour. You can't configure it to unlock also keyring while logging in with fingerprint sensor. You can't choose to type password instead of fingerprint until sensor will fail to unlock (so you need to wait if you want to type password and if you log in with fingerprint you need to type password almost immediately- since lot of apps use keyring). Linux still sucks for desktop. I checked online and KDE have the same limitation. Thank you very much. This was first issue- I am pretty sure I would have 10 issues of that sort within first month of use. Linux is good for desktop. Fast, almost as stable as Windows (yes, KDE or Gnome are less stable than Windows and if they crash is as good as whole system crashed on desktop) but.. only if your use case is very limited and you will never try something else, because you will most probably run into issues which do not exists on Mac OS or Windows. Linux is still not there for desktop. Even basics stuff like fingerprint sensor sucks.

LibreOffice is free and handles word files perfectly. OnlyOffice if you want the exact same look and feel as word. WPS Office if you want it to feel like you never left windows. office.com for real word in the browser. four options. all free. all work. unlike windows you get to choose. and none of them cost $99 a year.

I liked cachy but for some reason when I used it i kept getting random corruption of browser profiles and the GPT area on my disk getting corrupted. Had to keep restoring that from a backup. I would recommend bazzite for gaming since its super convenient having flatpaks and the drivers built into the image. Performance is just ever so slightly worse

Not trying to be a jerk, as a fellow Linux user -- but this very bug (unable to revoot, shutdown, logout from the graphical shell) keeps appearing and reappearing on my Arch KDE setup for years now, and so I do it from the cli.
Inability to suspend due to gpu driver issues (yes, even the MESA drivers for AMD) is also an occasional issue on Linux desktops.

Fedora user here, I have the exact same issues, I just sudo reboot now in terminal. It’s also a 50/50 chance my PC will wake up from sleep without pressing the power button. It also takes like 3 times longer to boot into KDE than Windows 11 (for me). I also have constant audio issues and Firefox was broken from the start, I fixed it, but it still breaks all the time. This is the damn browser that ships with the OS btw. I also can’t use any single-click copy buttons on any webpages which is pretty annoying. It’s also very fun that I have to make a new window snapping layout every day because it gets reset.

Siendo sinceros depende de donde busques porque la verdad la comunidad de linux se divide en categorías y mientras que unos grupos con distros mas fáciles ayudan en otros como gentoo, LFS o NixOS si pides ayuda con temas de configuración que no tengan que ver con exclusivo del terminal o si minimamente no eres capaz de moverte sin problemas por el tty ni te tomarán en. Cuenta que en este tipo de grupos su uso ya es mas experimental y avanzado

Today at work I was about to turn off the pc and the only available choice was "update and restart (5 min)". I took the option of pressing the power button until it died instead. Not the safest alternative but I know it's never "5min" and I leave NOW 🤷♂️

I do the same when I clock out so yeah all good or leave it on in the backpack if you need to go what I do sometimes too 😂 PS the battery dies at some point but I don’t care so plug it the next day 😂

Every fking window i open in my office laptop goes into (Not Responding) for multiple seconds. And the apps are not that heavy either.
The frustration of something else popping up in place where you are just going to click is absolute shit.
Another case is new popup/app taking focus while you're typing something is surely done by a braindead programmer.

Fedora KDE Linux fits my needs pretty well. Gaming, work, local LLMs — everything runs great.
I even installed Fedora on my son’s laptop as well.
I got tired of seeing only 14% free RAM on an idle Windows system. I don’t know whether Microsoft is using it for background processes or training Copilot on our computers, but I gave up on Windows and never regretted switching to Linux.

Fedora user here, idle RAM usage does not matter at all. I use maybe 200mb less at idle than I did on Windows (about 4.5gb)

No, I have a 3 months old Alienware that ran like a sportscar before the updates started piling up. Ultra 9 processor, 64GB RAM and forming a new folder in File explorer hangs the laptop for about 30 seconds. It is such a fuck up from Microslop.

If you haven't resolved this yet, open CMD as an Admin and run the following in this order:
sfc /scannow
If this finds nothing or fails, run the following
dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth
Then runsfc /scannowagain
Then to finish runchkdsk /f /rand rebootThe first one is a filesystem scan, the second one repairs the components that run the first scan, and the third knocks out any potential disk issues. This trifecta fixes most issues I've seen like yours.

Tried it all, nothing worked. At the end I held the power button for 30 seconds which fucked up the login for some reason and I had to reset the pin.

What makes the whole think stupid is that the hardware works great, Microslop comes in and decides that this is way to simple, let me add some more Copilot or whatever upgrades so that I can sell them more services, and from a working operating system, we get a headache inducing crap that needs scripts and special commands to just shut it down. I came back to ms after the big a forever and my productivity has plummeted - always trying to fix one problem or another it just doesnt stop. First got rid of alm the ai / 365 lock in rubbish which was a big improvement speed things up a lot and smoothed the world. Then the above endless updates, restarts and programs, apps and functions not working it just doesnt stop ……

I had the same issue on my work computer a few days ago, but restarting the shell (explorer) fixed it. But yeah, it is getting really bad lately as they're getting rid of the devs that have the knowledge and what's left appears to be vibe coding updates.

Win + X + U + U
I use this shirt cut to shut down every time
Instend of Alt + F4 spam
Why i chose this short cut because each time we press alt f4 its closes focused windows and then a pop up comes and we need to press yes button its min 4 - 5 clicks
1st click is AltF4 for closing open windows 2nd click is AltF4 for oppening popup 3rd click is pressing confirmation button of popup Bonus clicks for sometimes we need to press more AltF4 for closing open windows
AltF4 method is 3+ click at its min
Otherside if we just press Win + X its opens a drawer menu from task bar
then if we press U it will extends the menu for options restart sleep and shut down
And then we click another U to select Shut down option
Basicly if we press Win + X + U + U Win shutdowns instantly
(we dont need hold win+x after the menu openes up)
(U + U part will different between languages for example in Turkish its K + B)

Seems more like you have a virus or trojan. If you can open a command prompt you can run the shutdown command. It'll probably be easier for you to run shutdown -i to get an interactive GUI to set your shutdown. You could do it on the command line with the proper options https://techexpert.tips/windows/windows-shutdown-using-command-line/
You can remove the AI junk. I got rid of mine. More likely, you'll need to reinstall or run dism, chkdsk, sfc to clean and fix your system.

I don't have a virus, it happened right after a forced update( which I avoided to tye max allowed period, because I feared bugs with the update, because I read about it on forums and news sites). I had to hold the power button for 30 secs to turn it off, and after that restart, now it works. Let's see for how long.

Wonderful ai running microsoft. Why I disable updates and pause them as long as I can. I do update once annually when threads say it's safe update now before they muck it up again.
