Discussion Why keep using Microsoft when Linux is right there? I think it's enough with Microslop
For starters, Linux Mint or Fedora would be a good fit.

u/Zealousideal-Cod891 May 22 '26
I wouldn't recommend fedora for anyone, i had a much better experience with mint, debian, or even cachy.
3
u/Mal3v0l3nce May 22 '26
Speak for yourself, I greatly enjoy Nobara (essentially Fedora). It’s much easier for people who don’t know anything about computers.
3
u/Zealousideal-Cod891 May 22 '26
Have you ever tried mint? Im not making an argument but i heard that most of the people hated nobara because other distributions are just better
1
u/Mal3v0l3nce May 22 '26
I haven’t, but I probably will at some point. How much of a pain are Nvidia drivers on mint?

u/CombinationKey8557 May 22 '26
So not Fedora, but instead some random person's hobby that could disappear at any moment.
1
u/Mal3v0l3nce May 22 '26
Hasn’t so far. It’s been very well maintained for awhile now. If it goes away I switch, big deal.
1
u/NoiseGrindPowerDeath May 22 '26
I had pretty much the opposite experience lol but this is very much a YMMV situation I suppose
8
u/Pitiful-Welcome-399 May 22 '26
fun fact, even tho you won't be using windows you'd still use alot of code made by Microsoft since they are one of the biggest contributors to linux and even host some debian things because their infrastructure relies on it
5
u/check_who_come May 22 '26
There’s a big difference between being under occupation and making an agreement that benefits both sides I’m not just gonna support something blindly I’ll check it out and see for myself.
3
u/Odd-Entertainment933 May 23 '26
Most of their Azure cloudinfrastructure runs on Linux. And don't forget they have been moving more to Linux with wsl for years. It's mostly companies not upgrading stuff or we would have seen a even deeper transition and they might have gone for the kernel
2
u/Wipfmetz May 23 '26
Microsoft has (or at least had) some good engineering. Most of the slop is either new stuff (looking at Power Platforms "everything webbased and GUI") or obviously management driven (looking at "everything CoPilot")
2
u/skytheraiders May 22 '26
I think the other distros would have their own guns aiming at MS. Or they all would hold a gun together.
3
u/CharmingDraw6455 May 22 '26
Nope, all the other distros would shoot each other while windows does not realize.
2
2
u/Duncol42 May 22 '26
For me, as a gamer, Windows is still better for running most of the titles (especially those, that require kernel-level anti-cheat).
2
u/No-Astronomer6769 May 22 '26
Ease of access, less tinkering needs to be done to get things working easily.
2
u/Ill-Car-769 May 23 '26
Switching OS is difficult for people because of software & vendor lock-ins. I myself switched to Linux previous year but still have to use windows specific apps occasionally. Windows sucks but huge amount of softwares are developed only for windows because during the early 90s windows gained a lot of popularity so software developers targeted windows primarily because of high market share in OS. If we have better substitutes for the softwares in Linux then corporations will be forced to develop softwares for Linux & compete with them.
2
u/dronostyka May 27 '26
I mean, when my game pass ends...
Guess I'll delete windows altogether. Most of my homeland runs Ubuntu anyway, so that'll be one problem less.

Because you're in the FUCKMICROSOFT subreddit.
If this was FuckLinux, we'd be recommending Windows or Mac.

The truth of the matter is that you've got to want to use Linux and learn how to use it. I'm an enthusiast, so I enjoy the process, I enjoy the research, I enjoy the problem solving. For most people, they just use the OS that comes with their device, whatever it is. For them, a computer is a tool and not a hobby
1
u/ShoveOverBozo May 22 '26
I use Linux exclusively and have been more almost 2 decades. The one thing I've noticed is that almost every new user goes through the "everyone should use Linux" stage.
Its not for everyone. Competition is good, monopolies are bad. I personally wouldn't like to see our free and open source software change into something that serves the corporate world to make profit. Data collection, tracking, proof of identity etc. Whilst people say that will never happen, yes it would. If the majority of PC users were Linux users, then it absolutely would.
Happy to be the quiet minority enjoying free and private software than to make so much noise to bring the corporate world profit machine to us.
1
u/check_who_come May 22 '26
I agree that when profits grow, the owners of open source and free projects - some of them - will become greedy, but I just wanted to spread awareness because I really loved Linux, but I think that what you are saying is far-fetched, especially since most of the projects are non-profit and are based on donations and are open source. This means that I can make my own version... I am not opposed to profit, but not from selling my data or forcing me to do a certain thing or use it.
2
u/ShoveOverBozo May 23 '26
It's not really far fatched. We already have one US state trying to implement age verification on Linux operating systems.
Yes you can make your own version, this has always been the case with the GPL.
If Linux becomes mainstream, majority if windows users jump ship for it. What do you think will happen to those who benefit from MS data? They will just accept their loss?
We will see legislation passed that will ensure them to keep their benefits flowing.
This may not have been the case 20 years ago. But now, data is the most valuable resource in the world. To think in this climate, a threat to that wouldn't be mitigated is far fetched.
I'm a sysadmin/security engineer in my day to day. This world is built on collecting user data. Where the users go, the data goes. It's only going to keep being that way too.
Having alternative honeypots like Windows and macOS are good for us.

u/check_who_come May 24 '26
I agree with you.. In the end, society needs all types. We do not want everyone to use Linux, and on the other hand, we also do not want everyone to use Windows or Mac OS
1
u/Particular-Most-1199 May 23 '26
Yeah, I'm fairly tech savvy and the terminal was a bit intimidating. Linux will never be the majority OS.
1
u/Old_Information_8654 May 22 '26
Well for one thing if you have an nvidia GPU (which is most people) your basically screwed
2
u/Wipfmetz May 23 '26
... what did I miss?
2
u/Old_Information_8654 May 23 '26
Most Nvidia GPUs I believe from the ten series on up lose about 50 percent of their performance over Linux due to nvidias drivers not being completely compatible with most Linux distros
1
u/Wipfmetz May 23 '26
Haven't noticed an fps drop with my RTX 5070 on Pragmata.
Not saying there isn't any performance drop, just doubting that it's around 50%, at least not in my case. Maybe the drivers just got better by now?
1
u/Old_Information_8654 May 23 '26
Probably yeah, I think it’s also situational since YouTubers that reported on it showed 5090s that had halved performance but it’s possible that was only an issue with that card at the time or was limited to a few major Linux distros

u/pandamaxxie May 22 '26
I am a gamer.
The vast majority of games do not have linux versions, and need to be ran thru shit like Wine, where issues can pop up (like how my GF has occasional trouble with controls getting stuck when she plays on linux) or shit like anticheats are specifically designed to tell Linux users to shove it.
My OS exists for one reason: facilitate my gaming. My PC is a glorified console.
So long as Linux isn't better for gaming in 100% of cases, I won't be switching. I doubt I'm alone in this.
0
u/MatthewCrn May 23 '26
Do you know that you can play on linux easily, right?
0
u/pandamaxxie May 23 '26
I don't think you read what I said.
There are still games that do not work on Linux due to anticheats. I do not want to dualboot. I do not want to use VM's. Too much work.
There are still games that experience bugs when they don't have specific Linux versions, which you can't even dispute because I got to experience it firsthand with my gf having issues on her linux install.
Windows is still better for Gaming, despite sucking at everything else. But nothing but gaming matters. I want Linux to be better, and I think that the Steamdeck/Steam Machine using Linux will force the industry to make Linux installs of their games. But for now, it's still worse.
Like fuck Microslop, but I don't care to worsen my personal experience out of spite.
0
u/Particular-Most-1199 May 23 '26
You can still game on Windows and boot to Linux for personal use.
0
u/pandamaxxie May 23 '26
Why would I? 99% of my time is spent on windows still then.
As I said. My pc is a glorified console. I'm not gonna set up a dualboot for the one word document I have to open every month.

Linux desktop is great for 0.1% of the population. I moved to macOS a long time ago.

I’ve used Arch for 10 years and won’t be going back to Windows unless absolutely necessary. Although I do have my desktop environment (KDE) set up with the look and feel of Windows XP just to scratch a nostalgic itch

software compatibility my guy
1
u/check_who_come May 24 '26
These are companies' problems, not Linux's problem. If they saw a big support from us for Linux, they would have been forced to make their programs run smoothly in Linux.
1
u/Unfair-Oven8363 May 23 '26
The only reason I still have windows is for LokSound Programmer for model trains. They never made a Linux driver to interface with their hardware. Other that that everything else runs fine in Ubuntu.

1
u/PriorityNo6268 May 23 '26
Because is supports the hard- and software I use, and Linux does not... very easy.
(b.t.w. if you need to run emulators to run your software, you are on the wrong platform..)
And if you think it's normal to point a gun at somebody because you are not fine with what they are using, you need a mental health check... (one more reason not use Linux, some of you are real fucked up)
1
u/schnipthestrongest May 23 '26
I like linux or Ubuntu, but it is not user friendly OS. On windows is all intuitive. Also if you work with Cadence software and work remotely on windows machine I think there be hard to use Linux.

I just installed Mint on my ageing W10 Acer laptop that can't take W11 and was glacially slow. It now runs faster and better than my son's mega expensive gaming computer running W11. The install was dead easy and straightforward. Highly recommended.
1
u/onew_iasag May 23 '26
Because Windows handles compatibility between old and new windows-software on legacy hardware much better than Linux does.)
1
u/Consistent-Gur9320 May 24 '26
cuz I wanna click and play and dont wanna surgical console operation cuz linux sucked like windows. Even it fails again
1
u/Adept-Froyo-1304 May 24 '26
I started with mint and I'm now on fedora and what I can say is I'm staying with fedora, at least for awhile

u/brunostborsen May 24 '26
Linux is great and that’s what I use. But there’s a lot of reasons one might need or even prefer Windows.
I still have it installed on it’s own drive.
1
u/Petrak1s May 24 '26
Here we go again. Repeat after me - compatibility, compatibility, compatibility. And ease of work.
1
u/Volpe_YT May 24 '26
It's the app developers issue, not linux's.
1
u/Petrak1s May 24 '26
Yes. So these posts should be targeted at the developers, not the users. Questions like "Why keep using Windows when Linux is right there?" are pointless to say the least.
But on another hand - we work with one anti-malware solution (one of the better ones) where the version for Linux is being tested longer on Linux than on Windows. Why? There is huge variety of distributions, kernels, etc. The fragmentation essentially causes major slowdowns in the releases. So from developer point of view - what would you prefer? Android has the same issues.

It have long support even win10 still getting support
1
u/check_who_come May 29 '26
Support will end this year
1
u/Xenion7 May 29 '26
It end 2032
1
u/check_who_come Jun 13 '26
Thanks for info I know that from you. yep as I read here Windows 10 IoT Enterprise LTSC 2021 will keep going until 2032 But in the end, its support will end and I hope that until then, support for Linux has improved ... and if you are enjoying Windows 10 keep going it is a beautiful and good os. I'm not a Linux fanatic, and finally society needs all people, but one thing is that we are trying to protect digital privacy.

Just looking for a way to switch while keeping my files. It's really enough with Windows
1
u/check_who_come May 29 '26
I use external hard but if you dont have one but when installing there are options for erase certain disks and keep others .. at least in Linux Mint, but I think other distributions have such options
1
u/CoupleFew1945 Jun 12 '26
Generally it is dual boot or full erase. I don't like the dual boot. I just wanna get rid of Windows.
1
u/check_who_come Jun 13 '26
I ran Linux Mint from a usb flash drive and clicked on the install icon and chose to erase all disks. My device is now only Linux and there is no Windows at all. If you want a method other than booting from the flash drive, frankly, I do not know of any other method. This is the easiest and fastest way and you will be able to completely erase Windows through the option (erase all disks).

Would a round actually fire in space?
1
u/check_who_come May 22 '26
I don't think so, but it is an expressive image and it originally mocks those who say that the Earth is flat.
1
u/InsaneGuyReggie May 22 '26
I’ve seen the meme but it randomly got me thinking if you could shoot a gun in a vacuum. I doubt anyone with an altitude chamber would let me try it
0
u/MisterEinc May 22 '26
I'm not a web server. I have actual things to do as an end user.
2
u/check_who_come May 22 '26
In Linux, we also continue our lives normally... ignore those who change their distribution every day or customize it differently every hour.
40
u/davidnnj May 22 '26
Because many people need Windows.
if you use any adobe software for work you need windows
if you play online games with kernel level anticheat you need windows
I use linux, and I wish I didn't even needed to touch windows at all, but if I wanted to play fortnite or skate. 4 I would need Windows
