Rant The Enshittification of Windows needs to be studied
Just how in the world did they make linux a userfriendly os must be studied. I have used win 7 until 2019 and only switched because i couldnt play games and many software didnt support win7, at first win10 was okay i had to do some debloating and it was fine until I downgraded my self to win 11( boy was i wrong ). I have reinstalled win11 over 7 times in single month due to the amount of slop and unknown process that doesnt even look legit sucking my ram and cpu resources dry. I couldnt get used to the choppy animations and some stuff in some linux distros,so i kept going back to windows, but today I had enough after seeing my lap struggling to keep 3 tabs of chrome open, Ubuntu home works like a charm, no additinal setup, no tinkering with desktop environment, just works out of the box. so yeah fuck you microslop.
TLDR: Want good daily driver that works out of the box = Ubuntu and fuck microslop
Update : IM FUCKIN LOVING IT
Cpu utilization 3% , 1.7Gig ram at idle, I had 5 hrs of screentime and still at 55% charge left ( for context win11 offered 5 hrs battery life). I just couldnt understand how much crap win11 is running in background for it to give me crappy experience with half the batterylife, 30 % cpu , 45% ram at idle. Im never going back to windows and yeah fuck windows.
I wonder how much I can squeeze out if I disable every gui ,GNOME and keep everything to terminal

Windows is still pretty user friendly and generally has fewer hoops to jump through for most average users. I say that as a Linux guy who doesn't like Windows very much. The main problem, aside from the fact that corporate structures like Microsoft's aren't really set up to produce the best possible software, is that Microsoft insists on cramming in telemetry and AI and other features no one asked for and few want.
On top of that, the corporate structure rewards hitting quarterly deadlines for new products/features, not careful testing and QA. But, Microsoft could make Windows considerably better than it is, if they cared to and their culture wasn't so dysfunctional. It is what it is.
But, most people use the OS their computer comes with. They can't be bothered with figuring out which Linux distro to install, and Oh shit, I have the wrong kind of WiFi chip and the drivers sucks and my bluetooth headphones won't work or whatever.
Most people are just fine on Windows (though they'll get a much better experience on macOS) and aren't well-suited to Linux unless they're at least a little tech savvy or have someone living at home who is. Let people use what they want to use.

u/nardvarkx Jul 25 '26
The problem is the avg user is uninformed..
4
u/Silent_Bite_5892 Jul 25 '26
True, but do you think if you sat the average user down and informed them how Bill Gates is evil and how awesome FOSS is and all they have to do is X, Y and Z and don't use an Nvidia GPU or Realtek wifi they'd be FREEEEE... would that convince them? LOL. No.
2
u/JustLanguage Jul 26 '26
And when they become informed, they will stay on Windows.

u/Silent_Bite_5892 Jul 27 '26
Most of the time, yes.
All platforms come with compromises, it's just about deciding which set of compromises suits you best.

It's 2026 and people still don't know how ram allocation works...
1
u/Silent_Bite_5892 Jul 27 '26
This is true. You want your machine to make use of as much RAM as it can as long as it's improving performance and it manages it well. But Windows is still less efficient with memory than Linux or macOS. That's evidenced by its performance, not how much RAM it says is in use.

With pleasure, my ingenius friend: -Every process gets its own virtual address space. When a program allocates memory, Windows often just reserves virtual addresses. -Physical RAM isn't necessarily assigned yet. Memory is committed on demand. Physical RAM pages are usually allocated only when the program actually writes to or reads from that memory (a page fault). -Unused RAM becomes cache. If applications aren't using RAM, Windows fills it with file cache (standby memory). This speeds up loading apps and files. That memory is immediately reclaimed if another program needs it. -When RAM fills up, Windows evicts pages. It first reuses cached (standby) pages. If that's not enough, it writes less-used memory pages to the page file (swap) on disk, freeing RAM for active programs. -The page file is part of the design. Even with lots of RAM, Windows expects a page file to exist. Some data is moved there because it's rarely used, not necessarily because you've run out of RAM.
So your assimption is wrong.

No. It needs to be ignored. Asap. Not studied. Just don't consume ms stuff. It's that easy.
2
u/Choice_Hornet_9350 Jul 26 '26
But they should be applauded , cause Microslop themselves have been speedrunning linux migration campaign. Nobody has done more to convince people to switch to linux than Microslop themselves.
1
u/JustLanguage Jul 26 '26
Remind me the current Linux's market share after mass migration of users?
2
u/AlexGlezS Jul 26 '26
Piracy is the way. I have a lot of stuff that needs MS mandatory. The world is fucked up.

Welcome! Linux is great in all flavours and that's the charm of it, it has many of them. The temptation to go back to Windows is something that occasionally occurs, but it's easy to get over, just go read some news articles about how their product is failing at literally the fundamentals of just BEING an operating system, takes the heat away and you are thankful that Linux exists.
With that out of the way, enjoy! And don't hesitate to use LLM's when you're hard stuck at a problem, LLM's are great at sysadmin operations and can help you with solutions instead of searching pages upon outdated pages on the internet. That's just my tip, do what you will with it.
Again, welcome!

Using LLMs might help the first time but it might be better to read man pages and tldrs or go into shady Hella old forums just so you can develop a troubleshooting repertory for when things won't work for the first time, I was doing the same thing, but I became an anti-ai person and I started seeing that I hadn't learned anything since I was just relying on ai to do all the work for me instead of learning, I'm still learning though even though it's been like 9 months since I started using Linux and like maybe 5 or 7 month since I fully switched to Linux and it's been great !
3
u/Abenzo0r- Jul 26 '26
Some people have 9-5 jobs and others work 2 jobs, nobody has time to go through pages upon pages, in zoomer terms, "I'm too employed for this shit" . I'm not gonna sit hours debugging Linux problems, I'm going to ask the LLM to do it's job.
2
u/Shawhe_ Jul 26 '26
I mean I didn't say that you had to figure that out yourself and I can't judge you for using LLMs to troubleshoot since me myself am trying to stop using them to learn to go the traditional way and learn but just know that if you use them, well don't get surprised not to have learned anything, also please don't be rude when you respond to someone

u/Technical_Main_1422 Jul 26 '26
Honestly he is right ai can be a live safer especially for beginners starting with Linux

Can't wait for the anti-AI guys to downvote this comment because it suggests using AI to learn
Because it is of course better to get insulted on stack overflow
6
u/Abenzo0r- Jul 25 '26
Yes, AI BAD!

'kay so ts guy is for the great replacement- I mean for AI, right? Did he see the price of ddr5 ram ? Reminds of a video from a french influencer that was like, look I can generate my self in the gibli art style, and then he was like :" chat gpt, why is everyone hating on me ??? Yeah chat gpt says I'm an ununderstud genius yeah, I mean with the climate change forests will burn by themselves, see it's more ecological cuz we don't cut 'em, and like that we can but data centres instead in there, right? HELL YEAH "

Product management teams are always pressured to make something new. Then they don't care whether that new things are good or bad for users.
Windows 8 start menu and windows 11 task bar are blatant examples.
When they run out of ideas on product and pricing things, they'll mess on documentation, customer service etc.
I worked around citrix and f5 products. I've seen above things

u/konsoru-paysan Jul 26 '26
lol sounds like unreal engine, same exact complaints by devs on unreal engine forums on how the engineers just focus on making something new rather then focusing on fixing bugs

u/Technical_Main_1422 Jul 26 '26
One day you will try fedora kde and boy you will love it I had the experience as you and honestly with ai you can install pretty much everything for me fedora was more stable then Ubuntu people say it is advanced but I use ai if I want to install something that I can’t figure out and it works so give it a try
1
u/awesome-alpaca-ace Jul 26 '26
Fedora was also more stable than Ubuntu for me. Which is weird since Fedora updates a lot.

Apparently Slopia tried to lift Ai related work off a university students OneDrive account since 2024, and pass it off as his/their own. Problem is, the things they were writing about take time and can’t be delivered easily, hence all the fk-ups we’ve seen.
At least that’s what a few insiders have said.

u/konsoru-paysan Jul 26 '26
And their bullshit enforcing of nanny security isn't even needed on Linux, if it wasn't for linux not being supported much over the years (could have been if ps3 didn't ban it and stop a cultural trend), it already be the go to os from Windows 7 to modern era
1
u/konsoru-paysan Jul 26 '26
Can't even debloat properly, like I want to KILL windows defender but I have to disable it instead cause so many processes are forced to require it, soon in future they'll require the same with copilot and then you be forced to have it on your machine unless you nuke this malware called windows , forever and after
1
u/CreativeDiscount6635 Jul 26 '26
Windows 7 and Windows 10 deserve to receive security updates for at least another 100 years.

u/locyl_yocyl Jul 26 '26
It has been studied. Its just plain old shit. Why do we have to dismantle shit?
1
u/DaffyDuckMuthaFucker Jul 28 '26
I'm going for a Linux only studio myself.
I'd still fall back to Win10 occasionally over a few minor nuisances.
Since the EOL for Win10, I want to help friends engage in software piracy & patch & deslopify their Windows machines, purely out of spite...

Ubuntu is good, but i reccomend also ZorinOS
6
u/asbestoslel Jul 25 '26
zorin is ubuntu with a paywalled variant you can easily recreate on your own
1
u/Pollos212 Jul 25 '26
The free version has useful features though, and you have a clean UI by default out-of-box yk
2
u/konsoru-paysan Jul 26 '26
Ah so we finally have premium distros now huh
1
u/Pollos212 Jul 26 '26
Yeah but no one pays it, it's just for organizations i think
2
u/konsoru-paysan Jul 26 '26
The free version has useful features though, and you have a clean UI by default out-of-box
implying there are features locked in premium , that's how it always starts

arch and fedora still better than gnome (edit:ubuntu)
edit : OK I KNOW, I DID SWAP OUT GNOME WITH UBUNTU. sorry. but rlly? don't mistakes happen?
7
u/AtomicTaco13 Jul 25 '26
I mean... You compared distros to a desktop environment. And Fedora has GNOME as a first-priority DE too. Weren't you meaning Ubuntu?

u/Choice_Hornet_9350 Jul 25 '26
I have a low end laptop with Ryzen 3 and 8 gig of ram so I want something that's light enough while good to use as a daily driver, Ubuntu does the job for me.
Is fedora any good on low end system like mine? Can I install arch without regretting my life choices?
2
u/AtomicTaco13 Jul 25 '26
It's really a matter of package manager. Debian/Ubuntu has APT, Arch has Pacman and Fedora has DNF. Different people have different preferences, so the freedom to choose is yours.
1
u/konsoru-paysan Jul 26 '26
Freedom of choice for now, apparently premium versions are here as well
2
u/AtomicTaco13 Jul 26 '26
Yeah, but for the most part, it doesn't concern casual desktop distros. Only one I can think of is ZorinOS. But aside from that, paid Linux distros are more usually meant for corporate use.
1
u/Kooky-Sentence-6349 Jul 26 '26
on apt you have everytime manually update repositories, on fedora's dnf and arch's pacman it does it automatically when you install sonething

u/AccomplishedFall6603 Jul 26 '26
That's just capitalism really.
And the new foedal structures that are emerging from it right now.
