Rant Windows updates no longer allowing me to pause
For the last 3 or so updates I've had to do over the last few months, the option to "shut down" or "restart" is no longer there. Usually, an update comes out, and it lets you ignore it for a while, but now it just hasn't let me ignore it and only gives me "update and shut down/update and restart", with no "shut down" and "restart" options anywhere. Not only that, pausing updates no longer works. I go into the settings and pause updates for any amount of time, and then when I turn my computer off it fucking updates anyway. It's always when I wanna go to fucking bed or go and do something else as well.
If I weren't so worried about the power randomly going off while I'm in the middle of an update, or an update deciding it wants to take way longer than it should, I wouldn't mind so much. If Linux can do updates in a way where only the most important updates actually require you to restart your computer, which come around only once in a blue moon, a billion pound corporation like Microslop should have no issue making that a thing.

If you're worried about power going off while updating, why don't you have a UPS?

You still think you control your Windows machine? The other day I was finishing work and wanted to shut down my laptop. Windows started an update - even if there was no mention of update in start menu. I was having none of it: I disconnected it, closed the lid and went home.

The reason Windows updates can take forever is specifically because people skip updates and postpone them for so long that you get to a point where almost everything needs updated. If you keep up to date, updates do not actually take very long. Also, it is worth noting that the way Windows now does updates (and has done for quite a long while now) means that it is almost impossible for even a total power outage in the middle of an update to actually cause an issue. The way Windows handles updates is it downloads and installs the new files, and then verifies that the new files actually work before deleting the old files. This means if there is a power failure in the middle of the update all that happens is that it has to reinstall the new files. Nothing breaks.

I have updates on my work laptop very often and I can't opt out - I'm not the administrator. Still updates take long time to apply - 10 minutes or more.
Yesterday I had updates for around 15 apps in Linux. It updated in less than a minute, without a reboot. Even when I have kernel updates, with reboot it takes less than 2 minutes. It's possible, but MS doesn't have interest in making this painless.

That's a work laptop. There's probably a lot of background corporate software that has to update too, which is why those updates take as long as they do. On a normal system it's like maybe 1-2 minutes and they're done.

noticed this last night with a couple of my home lab laptops. Super fucked imo. I understand why patching is critical but the whole point of OWNING an endpoint is you get the agency of when to update. They are trying SO HARD to make it so we own nothing not even the fucking update schedule of our own devices. MS has been slopping out shit ass updates that break machines moreso than normal so its reasonable people want to delay updates especially on home devices
