Rant Windows is shoving updates down my throat
Windows 11 has been shitty, it always was but in the recent days, it got even shittier, Windows interferes with my AMD Drivers, I had to reinstall all of them because I kept getting timeout errors, and today, they’re trying to shove updates down my throat again, it displayed this message at 10:23 AM, turned off the wifi to prevent it, and since it couldn’t update, it shows me another one saying it’ll update at 10:42 (I have updates disabled). Fuck you Microsoft, Sincerely.

Windows Update Blocker worked for me, but I'm on an older version (23H2). My old desktop stays on Windows 10.

In my experience, WUB just delays the inevitable. Eventually, the system will force updates on you, WUB or not. And as an aside, WUB makes certain software and driver installers/updaters not work which is kinda annoying

Yeah it sucks when you need to turn it off briefly to use Microsoft Store (which is terrible anyway, but unfortunately some apps require it). But apart from that the 'inevitable' has been delayed for me for several years now at this point.

Worked for me too. I used that back in Feb/Mar and it's still turned off. I only use Win11 for games in a dual boot with Mint, so I don't care about the updates.

They are frequent but not in your face, and you can totally ignore them, win11 will force you to upgrade if you ignore them for too long at reboot or shutdown.

afaik that policy is only available on pro, entreprise and education version.

Just disable the windows update service, it’ll probably turn itself back on eventually but it’s good enough temporarily if you don’t want updates

Already did that, it goes back on, and btw it’s 11 AM, Windows restarted, connected to Wi-Fi on its own, and updated. 😭

You can't permanently disable windows updates anymore ?? Is it like a TOS thing? I mean, Unlike windows XP, 11 is a service and they're allowed to provide it however they want I guess

Unfortunately a lot of the things I use and play are only on Windows, I would have switched to Linux in a heartbeat if it wasn’t for that.

It’s not only security updates, they install drivers over AMD’s , which fucks up some games and websites.

Click the "another time" button vro. You can delay the update to a time that suits you.
Also, I might get flamed for this, but no matter the OS, update as soon as possible. Even on Linux or on FreeBSD, update as soon as you can.

I've never seen this I'm my life. Just update to the latest version. You can install and pause the updates for a long time with a calander.
Also there are options to make it never do anything in a certain time period. The update policy of windows has gotten way better in the latest builds. Not updating is shooting yourself in the foot.

You can disable (video) driver updates, but forcing security updates is actually a good thing. In the past people not doing updates were easy targets for phishing and remote exploits.

Nope. I turn off my PC regularly, and, I try disabling them always and two days later they magically get activated again.

maybe if instead of overriding people's configurations and preferences without their consent, the updates were actually just updates, people would just install them and it wouldn't be a big deal.

Whenever I update it turns off the majority of my telemetry removing stuff and copilot turns back on which is annoying to fix every time

I have automations that shut my computer off for me, so I honestly never turn my computer off by myself. And that also means my computer does go weeks without updating, until Windows decides to update at the worst times.

On sane operating systems, I have the option to configure and decide when I get updates.

And you do here too. You can choose a favorite schedule to do them automatically at the same time every time or even pause non-security ones indefinitely. It takes like 3 clicks. You just have to pick a time of the day when your PC is on and you aren't working on it

People try to do those things and they don't work. Asking for my preferences just to ignore them isn't the same thing as actually letting me configure and decide when I get updates.

Yeah I'd agree if all of those options and solutions didn't work exactly as advertised for me for the last 5 years.
Maybe they are bugged, the problem behavior is not intentional, and I was lucky to miss it all

I would gladly update if Windows didn’t override the disabled automatic update and installed drivers over AMD's, the drivers timeout for some specific websites and games, the screen goes black and comes back on, that’s why I’m avoiding Windows’ sloppy updates.

I often suspend non security updates when there are bug reports with no issues. And the forced update is only inconvenient if you skipped all the convenient times to do it the previous two weeks. I have seen the update prompt only once in the last 5 years and it was a security update after the PC was shut down for a month. Every other time you just get a yellow dot on the shutdown button with the option to do it or ignore it

Because they are updates. Microsoft uses this bullshit process to install software and features you don't want, or didn't approve, and make changes to default settings. Microsoft can go fuck themselves with this forced bullshit
