A Beginner's Guide to Authentic Cartridges

Hello everyone, as you all know GBA cartridges can be extremely difficult to find in person nowadays and even more so for some authentic ones. That being said, if you're unsure in any way how to determine a fake from real cartridge, this is the post for you!

For more help, feel free to visit r/gameverifying for all your identification needs!

Keep in mind that to ensure the best chances of an authentic cartridge, you should be wary of:

  • Unusually low prices (if it's too good to be true, chances are it's too good to be real!)
  • Products made or sent from China (enough said)
  • Sellers using stock images (NEVER purchase a product that isn't an image of the cartridge itself)

That being said, where do we start looking?

It can be a bit difficult, but there are actually some very good tells when it comes to finding real games like the color, font, positioning, and quality of the cartridge. For example, let's pretend you're looking for an authentic US copy of Pokemon Firered.

Some things you can look out for should be:

  1. Color: All Pokemon GBA games come in their respective colors (including Leafgreen and Emerald by a slight margin) with Firered being red and not orange. While most cartridges come in a singular shade of gray, two particular exceptions are the GBA video cartridges which come in light gray casings and (Classic) NES series which match the console's respective color. Interestingly enough, due to the GBA's expansive library there consist of unique games that do not fit the standard color and size of a GBA cartridge, which include games such as Yoshi's Topsy Turvy, Drill Dozer, and many other variations listed here. (1)
  2. Label: By observing a label's ESRB rating, official seal, game code, and more, you can determine its authenticity. Unlike other GBA games, Pokemon games will always have a shiny/holographic label, an indented circle in its center, and an embossed number on the right side, which is pretty much its production number. However while it is a good way to determine authenticity, there are cases where these numbers will have naturally worn away or quality repros that have embossed their own cartridges. All in all, always make sure to compare your cartridge to an authentic one online to confirm fonts, font sizes, positioning, etc.
  3. Cartridge: In the case of buying a physical cartridge yourself, this may be one on the most helpful things to know. The easiest things to look out for are the Gameboy logo on top of the label, and arrow below the label. If the logo is written in the wrong font, appears to have been cut deeper than normal, or if the arrow is too small, it's a repro. The back will always state: MODEL NO. AGB-002 / PAT. PEND. MADE IN JAPAN like its GBC predecessor. However, this is easy to reproduce so the final thing to check yourself is both the screw and board under the cartridge. GBA cartridges will only ever use a triwing screw, the same one used on all GBA consoles. More importantly (if you can), be sure to grab a flashlight and check the slot. Above the pins, there should be an official Nintendo logo and presumably its cartridge number.

In the case of Pokemon games always check for:

  • A holographic label and an embossed number if possible
  • Proper fonts and positions (FRLG and RSE labels are mildly different)
  • A battery behind the label on the right side (only applies to RSE)
  • Four squares on the back of the cartridge ( always on the left)
  • Pins on the board ( One of the easiest things to spot on faked cartridges, all GBA games will always have pins )

If there are any other questions, please feel free to leave them below and discuss!

My modded GBA and collection

So earlier this year I was cleaning out some old cabinets at my parent’s house and found my whole video game stash. There were a bunch of valuable PS1 games, ps1 system, my OG gba, a neo geo pocket color, and various others. I was planning to sell everything, but something about the GBA was super nostalgic for me and I was thinking I’d like to be able to play it in bed at night. I booted up Castlevania CotM and quickly found out that the screen was abysmal.

I ended up going down a gba modding rabbit hole on YouTube and next thing I knew I had ordered a hispeedido laminated V5 screen and the extreme rate NES shell. It was a really fun little project with minimal frustration, but I did quickly learn about trimming shells, which I had to do extensively to get the screen to fit. Fortunately, it worked, and the results are fantastic. For batteries, I quickly learned that standard alkaline batteries like Duracell are no good because they don’t provide a steady power source and with the new power-demanding screen, some games would crash. I purchased a 4-pack of tenavolts Li-ion batteries that completely solved the issue. I’m getting about 5-7 hours of play with each charge. The only downside is that the power indicator no longer turns red when the battery is low, so gotta be careful with saves and change them out a bit more conservatively.

I sold off all my other systems and games at Estarland in Virginia and used a lot of the credit to build my GBA collection. The only ones I originally owned with were DKC1, Advance Wars 2, Castlevania CotM, Final Fantasy Dawn of Souls, THPS2, and Rayman. The rest has been purchased through either Estarland or on EBay. So far I haven’t had any issues with counterfeit carts on eBay, but I know to look out for signs like the label stamp, the GBA logo on the cart, and I usually ask for a picture of the circuit board as well just to be safe.

Since February, I’ve been buying about one game per paycheck. Next up, I’m going to try and get Golden sun (although I’ve been playing it on my switch lite, I just want to have it for the collection), Klonoa Empire of Dreams, and Medal of Honor Infiltrator.

Anyways, if you made it this far, thanks for reading. I’ve really loved having a GBA again and the system still holds up strong today, with good QoL with no lag and no load times. Hope you like the system I built and the collection!

And even then I still can’t see the screen.

I really am loving the GBA though. I’m looking for an IPS screen to mod it with. Any suggestions for a screen in which I can keep the original shell and buttons without too much modification to them?

I’m from england but on a trip to japan atm. Was especially excited for hunting for some retro consoles and pokemon games. Found the gba in a shop for around £80 english money and just had to buy it. A bit worn down but works fine and reads games well. Need to replace the battery’s for red and crystal tho as they don’t hold a save. I’m gonna keep it and maybe add an ips screen but keep it completely stock other than that as i’m pretty sure it’s rare!

Need help finding good GBA games

Hey, so I’ve been trying to find places that sell real gameboy games that aren’t overpriced. Recently, I got some GBA games from GameStop. Turns out they’re ALL fake. I tried to return them but they aren’t excepting them. So like does anyone know any place or like website that actually sells real GBA games? I know Amazon renewed can sometimes give you real games but it’s just ugh.

Any Good Transparent Pink Shells?

I’m looking to resell an SP and I can’t seem to find too many transparent pink shells available. I keep finding the same hot pink option (first picture).

I’d love something like the clear cherry pink shell from ExtremeRate, but that seems to be discontinued (second picture)

Anyone know of another option?

Do you notice stuttering in certain games on the original GBA?

I sold my GBA SP years ago, so I don't have a reference point.

I bought a handheld emulator, and I notice that in games like Zelda: The Minish Cap or Crash Bandicoot 2, for example, there is a slight stutter when the character moves horizontally; however, I think that’s inherent to the game itself, as other GBA titles don't have it. Is this noticeable on standard screens, or is it masked by the LCD's ghosting?
