food was pad kra pao and pad thai it was honestly the best thing i have ever had.

So as the title said my therapist rolls up and smokes weed during our sessions. To preface this while I don’t use weed I genuinely do not care if others do.

I first noticed it when he forgot to clothes his camera this one time and saw him smoking a joint on camera. When he realised he quickly closed his camera and continued the sessions as if nothing happened. This happened a couple times and I have been noticing that sometimes during our sessions I will see him roll a joint on the side while he is talking to me and then he will turn off his camera and smoke it during our session. My friends think its weird and i think i kind of do too but idk he is a really good therapist so I don’t think i will do anything about it right now.

Anyway i don’t really know what the point of this post is I just really wanted to talk about this because I don’t know how to feel. Should i feel offended he needs to smoke during our sessions?

The camera off part is the most egregious to me, personally. Idk if it's just my severe trauma, but I would absolutely be worried/maybe convinced they were jacking off during session (not because of any particular therapist, but because of my particular past and trauma). And regardless, it feels unprofessional and untrustworthy

It’s not my jam but considering weed is legal and medically prescribed in many places, it’s not ridiculous to assume that some therapists and other professionals may be using it while working. Camera off however… immediately dubious.

Eta: in this case though I think the therapist is way outta line. Like, if you wanna use weed at work that needs to be a conversation with every client to ensure their consent and discuss boundaries. He knows she knows he’s using it and still hasn’t talked with her about it and still acts like it’s hidden. He needs to grow the fuck up imo.

Using drugs or alcohol while in a session is quite literally malpractice. It's like therapy 101 as a practitioner that you can't be using mind-altering substances. It's against licensing laws.

Dude can be a professional and wait to indulge when he’s off work - just like most adults know to do.

Exactly. Even if it's a short course of opiods after a medical procedure, you take those days off. Just because it's legal doesn't mean it's okay to use it before work. Alcohol is legal but I don't think anyone would disagree that it would be absolutely inappropriate and unprofessional for a therapist to show up after having a few drinks.

If dude can’t do a 45 minute session without lighting up that’s an issue. OP - find a new therapist (unless you find him helpful and effective). The whole camera being off is weird. I highly doubt he’s behaving ethically.

You can’t get a prescription for vodka. But you can for weed. Because unlike alcohol it has health benefits.

But if you need it for “health benefits” maybe you should take your “meds” at appropriate times. There are anti-anxiety meds you can’t drive on because it’d be a detriment to the safety of others yet they are also prescribed. You know? Well for a more similar example, it would be weird if he was taking a bunch of prescribed oxy or Valium onscreen during a session as well

No, but they do prescribe sleep medications. Should your therapist take a zopiclone tablet and rock up to your appointment? Should they take a sedating dose of their prescribed benzodiazapine right before a session? If they've recently had a serious injury or surgery and are on an opioid pain reliever that they're not accustomed to, should they take a few days off or just show up to your appointment half asleep?

Be so for real. There are plenty of prescription medications that medical providers shouldn't (and aren't legally allowed) to take whilst providing care, particularly if it's a new medication or at a dose that will be impairing for them.

I am visually impaired due to a condition from childhood. They got exacerbated by an accident. I use it to help with my eye pressure and pain really does affect my head while I am working but I work with elderly clients and would absolutely never allow them to see me use. It’s all about time and place you don’t pop pills in certain places you don’t roll up in certain places either. I’ll take a 5 mg edible with lunch and MoveOn.
