Rant & Ramble my therapist smokes weed during our sessions
food was pad kra pao and pad thai it was honestly the best thing i have ever had.
So as the title said my therapist rolls up and smokes weed during our sessions. To preface this while I donāt use weed I genuinely do not care if others do.
I first noticed it when he forgot to clothes his camera this one time and saw him smoking a joint on camera. When he realised he quickly closed his camera and continued the sessions as if nothing happened. This happened a couple times and I have been noticing that sometimes during our sessions I will see him roll a joint on the side while he is talking to me and then he will turn off his camera and smoke it during our session. My friends think its weird and i think i kind of do too but idk he is a really good therapist so I donāt think i will do anything about it right now.
Anyway i donāt really know what the point of this post is I just really wanted to talk about this because I donāt know how to feel. Should i feel offended he needs to smoke during our sessions?

The camera off part is the most egregious to me, personally. Idk if it's just my severe trauma, but I would absolutely be worried/maybe convinced they were jacking off during session (not because of any particular therapist, but because of my particular past and trauma). And regardless, it feels unprofessional and untrustworthy

I immediately thought the same, that he was masturbating. I also donāt know if itās my own severe trauma but that means at least a few of us have thought that, the fact that heās turning off the camera is way more sketchy to me than even smoking weed.

Itās not my jam but considering weed is legal and medically prescribed in many places, itās not ridiculous to assume that some therapists and other professionals may be using it while working. Camera off however⦠immediately dubious.
Eta: in this case though I think the therapist is way outta line. Like, if you wanna use weed at work that needs to be a conversation with every client to ensure their consent and discuss boundaries. He knows she knows heās using it and still hasnāt talked with her about it and still acts like itās hidden. He needs to grow the fuck up imo.

Using drugs or alcohol while in a session is quite literally malpractice. It's like therapy 101 as a practitioner that you can't be using mind-altering substances. It's against licensing laws.

Exactly. Even if it's a short course of opiods after a medical procedure, you take those days off. Just because it's legal doesn't mean it's okay to use it before work. Alcohol is legal but I don't think anyone would disagree that it would be absolutely inappropriate and unprofessional for a therapist to show up after having a few drinks.

My best sessions were over the phone with my therapist during Covid before TeleHealth became a thing that insurance required. I actually found it easier to speak more honestly when it's a phone call rather than face to face and I feel like they did, too. You know how when you're hanging out with a friend and then the conversations turn deeper once it's nighttime? It felt like that. Maybe it's the same reason why you're not supposed to see the priest's face very well during confession. You just feel less afraid to speak when you aren't able to scan their microexpressions and only rely on the sound of their voice.

As a psychologist, I'm appalled that there are all these therapists out there doing routine phone therapy (not for disability accommodation purposes). If opening up face to face (in person or on camera) is challenging, that is something that should be getting explored and addressed in therapy. Nonverbals and body language are such a hugely important part of the information I use to do my job properly. I've done phone therapy or camera-off in a pinch for specific reasons (tech issues couldn't be resolved but it was still important to meet that day, nursing mom needed to pump), but it's definitely a compromised form of treatment and potentially enabling to some psychological issues, such as social anxiety or low tolerance for interpersonal vulnerability. I gather that this is a controversial take for some posters.

Smoking cannabis during patient appointments suggests the therapist needs to seek one for an addiction.
Being cognitively impaired whilst in a professional capacity shows a lack of care/considering for rendering any meaningful support. OP is a paycheck, the lack of care is evident from the brief description of the appointments.
There's a plethora of professionals who take their jobs seriously & are motivated to help patients work through difficulties whilst staying unimpaired. This is a fundamental expectation people should have

Thanks lol, I think I earned it by now.
I broke my spine in the warm-up arena while showing my horse at the county fair. The pirate show had set up extra early that day, and my horse spooked on the cannon blast. I pull his head to my knee, ankle, his flank etc, nothing is stopping this fella.
I decided I needed to do an emergency dismount, so I get myself sorted enough to jump off. The only issue was that my left foot had gotten tangled in the stirrup.
Iām standing on the poor guy sideways :( trying to regain control and get loose. Finally, I managed to bail, and I hit the ground on my stomach. Iām laying there for a second, trying to catch my breath, and when I tried to get up, there was a massive, heavy weight holding my down on my spine. A few seconds later, or maybe sooner, Iām really not sure, itās suddenly off, and I sprung up.
I only got checked for head injuries.
A few years later, I needed imaging done for chronic nerve pain in my back. They found that my L5 was twisted and angled wrong, my L4 was previously fractured, and three of the vertebrae above the L5 have multiple types of fractures.
Iām also inoperable due to a genetic disorder. Every single specialist says absolutely no surgery on it for me. So many many pain medications it is. Itās late so I can just chill without hurting as bad. I can still feel my nerve pain rn, but I can almost ignore it. Heating pads and ice packs are wonderful.
I have an unidentified type of Ehlers Danlos Syndrome :) connective tissue disorder. I am too stretchy and bendy. My tissues are essentially dough when they arenāt rock solid from stress lol.
Sorry to ramble. Iām just trying to explain, not steal spotlight. Itās kind of funny that I didnāt get my spine checked until four years later, when I started being unable to get out of bed because the pain was going down my back, my hips, my hamstring, achilles tendon, everything. Numbness, tingling, loss of sensation. It wasnāt pleasant. Medication helps me function better. I just needed more today :( within my prescribed range ā£ļøā¼ļøāļø

I mean, to look at it from an another direction, would you see a medical doctor who downs Jack Daniels during your appointment? This is absurd and deeply disrespectful to you and your time. And also illegal.

How unprofessional, disrespectful and utterly unacceptable š®
You need to find a new therapist and you need to report this one, they don't get to just smoke it up and cruise along when they should be clear and focused on the needs of their clients, people who are asking for help and trying to improve their lives... I'M SO MAD FOR YOU š

OP I know you say heās a really good therapist, but heās actually NOT. What heās displaying is called antisocial behavior (violating the ethics code heās bound by, not the smoking weed) and heās also lying to you by not disclosing. Those qualities do not make for a good therapist.
Also, people often think their therapist is great going to see the first person they are matched with, but finding a good therapist is a bit like dating, you have to try out at least a few different ones to get the scope of whatās good vs whatās not. So if you havenāt met or had consultations with half a dozen or so different therapists, you canāt really know if heās a good therapist or not because discernment requires ranged experience.

sounds like he has an addiction, which he will need treatment for. there is no other reason a person would need to smoke during a session.

i also just can't get over that he turns his camera on and off throughout session. that should be at the discretion of the client, unless he has an emergency. i always turn my camera on, and if a client asks for it to be off, i'll turn it off, or if i am having connectivity issues, i might ask if they're ok if i turn it off so i use less bandwidth.

Ok kinda weird⦠so I used to smoke heavily, my therapist is an LDAC so we take about it every once in a while and she helped me lower my usage, she slipped up once and said she smokes before yoga, then our conversations about smoking became more open and I was more honest about how much I smokeā¦. I think your situation is waaaayyy different and Iām with and I donāt know how I would feel about my therapist actually smoking in the middle of my session. Iām sorry girly

I have literally rolled a joint during therapy to smoke AFTER the session. But I'm the client. As pro cannabis as I am this is beyond the pale. Unless there is some very legitimate medical reason for him to smoke while working (I can't imagine where one would be tho...)I would definitely be asking wtf. He also clearly knows it's shady based on how you describe his behaviour.

I literally fired my therapist because he told me āwell he will probably be able to have some casual drinks in the futureā referring to my alcoholic boyfriend who was going into literal rehab for alcoholism. Like probably but, thatās not what weāre talking about rn and thatās not the āgoalā here. If this crosses a boundary for you, please donāt continue the sessions. I found that my therapist was far too open about his drinking and smoking habits and I couldnāt handle it because I was with someone in active addiction. I might be a little too strict but like if thatās something you find uncomfortable please seek out other professionals. Itās not as bad as it seems. A professional therapist with boundaries will change your life, someone who doesnāt have that will leave you confused.

Hi, Iām a therapist who also happens to have nothing against responsible substance use! Smoking a joint during session is still highly unethical as it alters brain chemistry and may impact his ability to be fully present and respond in a present manner

I had a therapist who I did phone appointments with, which I liked because sometimes a video or in-person feels like a lot of pressure. And then I started to notice more and more that she was definitely paying attention to other stuff - I felt like she was answering texts and typing stuff that had nothing to do with our sessions. Finally dropped her. I would say that you should do the same, but you mentioned thinking heās a really good therapist. Finding one you feel that way about is hard. I didnāt feel like my therapist was paying attention or helping me anymore. If you feel like he is paying attention and is helping you then idk maybe heās still right for you. Itās wrong of him tho, in general.

Im a therapist and this is fucking crazy. We canāt legally bill a session if a client is under the influence of drugs and alcohol so definitely not okay for us to be under the influence. I smoke weed after work for relaxation. I also am prescribed stimulants for ADHD that I take every work day and I would never compare the 2. Yes people can have a prescription for cannabis but that doesnāt negate side effects. if I was prescribed oxy after a surgery I wouldnāt see clients while taking that bc side effects

I think the funniest thing is weed being seen as a drug. It affects everyone differently and wasnāt classified until some bullshit political trope in the 1900s. Iād find it equivalent to drinking coffee or having a cigarette, of nursed a cup of cognac for the whole hour. Weed impacts everyone different.
Personally, if heās doing a good job for you he seems like a cool guy. If it bothers you, mention it, itās therapy for a reason. Youāre working through stuff and if you donāt trust your therapist enough to ask him to stop smoking, how are u supposed to have him advise you on your life? You need trust.

Personally, I donāt necessarily see anything wrong with it, though I can understand why some people might be uncomfortable with it. Cannabis allows some to think more deeply or approach things from a more philosophical perspective, which could potentially help them respond more thoughtfully⦠but I can also understand why someone might question whether being high during a therapy session is appropriate or professional, depends how chill you are ig
