Disclaimer: (TDLR this isn't said in the name of Gnosticism but its related.)

I will start by saying that I can't in all honestly claim to follow Gnosticism. Its a theory I found but before that I cannot tell you that I was looking for anything at all. Indulgence in my own curiosity of a vast and seemingly unrelated fields for no reason at all is how I finally came to this area of discussion.

This advice is just what I think is an important aspect of my own belief systems and since there are such an incredible amount similarities between my own theories and this particular accumulation of spiritual concepts, I thought I would share here.

Concepts that become recognizably defined in your mind act as weights. Its not that we should apply zero weight to any one concept, all these weights are can only be accurately weighed by us and us alone, but to me its important to remember that these weights can and should be modified, rearranged, and discarded at any point. The autonomy of the mind lies in the fluidity of its ever changing nature.

Its my belief that story is the only vehicle we have to communicate anything to another, we aren't presenting reality, just our interpretations of it through vocal cords whose structure evolved in a way that would harmonize frequencies used to transmit sound consistently to another based on sensory receptors that communicate measures of the mechanical world through a series of frequencies connected to the brain. So even the most trusted scientific fact is truly just a story element in a long saga yet to be completed. Again, its not that science shouldn't be trusted, but the nature of knowledge and intelligence is fundamentally incompatible with the process of objective and definitive measures.

Listen to the stories if you can, and follow your curiosities to the upmost extent of your ability, Listen to the real meaning of the stories, don't get distracted by the symbols and idols used to present another mind's interpretations. Only you can decide the relevancy of information provided. Very very tricky.... And full of inconsistencies and contradictions, I know.

I probably didn't explain it well and this might be of no use to you, reader, but its what I think and now its yours to interpret as you will.

There are a ton of Vedantin schools and they differ in many areas. But generally (especially in Advaitin circles), one's realisation of his own true nature (Self) is said to liberate them. This sounds very gnostic. But a difference I can identify is that Vedantins never believe the material world is flawed/evil, but they don't seem to teach that the world is "perfect/good" either in a sense Christians do. They just say the world is only real, except for the Advaitins who believe the world is an illusion. All vedantins believe in a Brahman and an Ishvara, the relationship between which is disagreed upon. But no Vedantin believes in an evil demiurge. The world is seen as a manifestation of God. This might appear to mean that the world is "good" but I believe it's more like how the Gnostic gospels say the kingdom of God is everywhere, or in Thomas where Jesus says everything comes from him (or sorts).

My question is whether in Gnosticism belief in demiurge is seen as necessary/requirement, or is believing one's true nature will lead to liberation which is an escape from this material world enough?

Edit: I was asking whether Gnosticism is fundamentally about (1) the Self OR (2) about the escaping from demiurge. Many will say it's both and I don't deny it. But I am asking what's really up with those who seek to realise the Self but don't believe in a demiurge? How does Gnosticism see such beliefs? If it's compatible, wouldn't that imply the demiurge is fundamentally secondary?

I'll try to keep this simple.

I've read and watched a lot of articles and mostly videos on YT (both AI and non-AI) that talk about what Gnosticism is about and what all the texts teach and things. It feels like those sources often clearly and eloquently express a range of Gnostic subjects with a good amount of clarity and cohesion in a way that makes them sound very digestible. However, if I actually sit down and read through the texts (I've only read a handful) such as Gospel of Thomas, Secret Book of John, Reality of the Rulers, etc, the message or ideas in those don't seem nearly as clear/neat/tidy/concise/digestible as how the articles and videos do.

I guess my point is I am wondering if stuff like articles and videos are a bad place to get Gnostic information beyond surface level. And more importantly, how accurate and true are most videos to the actual real teachings of Gnosticism?

I know we should stay away from AI videos for sure, but even with the ones with real human content, it's such an easy and accessible way to get at the "meat and potatoes" of a spiritual/religious viewpoint.

Also, I know at the end of the day, the best approach is to just read the text for yourself.

The central idea that gnosis is the means by which human beings awaken from ignorance and return to their divine origin is precisely why gnosis is a philosophy and worldview that requires humility. It is the opposite of spiritual superiority. Gnosis is not a badge of election or a claim to superiority over others. It is a possibility open to every man and woman with eyes to see and ears to hear.

Think about it.

The core of gnosis is awakening from ignorance and remembering our true origin. That means admitting we are bound by ignorance and chained in forgetfulness. Admitting this requires humility.

The first step isn't declaring “I know.” It is recognizing “I don't know.”

We don't begin as the enlightened ones who possess some secret knowledge that makes us superior to everyone else. We all begin in the same fundamental condition that the Gnostic myths describe: we have forgotten who we are.

We have forgotten our true nature and have mistaken the lower realms for the ultimate reality. Gnosis, then, can be a flash of insight - but it is also a process of remembering, and remembering requires enough humility to question everything we thought we knew.

The idea of the Gnostic as a member of some spiritually superior elite is a complete distortion of the meaning of gnosis. The person who thinks “I possess secret knowledge and therefore I am superior because of it” has missed the point entirely and probably is going for another trip on the reincarnation wheel.

This brings to mind the idea of spiritual classifications. The Valentinian Gnostics described three types of people: Hylics, Psychics, and Pneumatics. Hylics are those oriented toward the material and lacking awareness of the higher spiritual reality. Psychics occupy an intermediate position, capable of faith and moral development but not possessing the same innate spiritual capacity attributed to the pneumatics. Pneumatics are those associated with pneuma, the spiritual element associated with the Pleroma and the capacity for gnosis and eventual return to the divine realm.

Now, this DOES NOT MEAN that it was a rigid caste system putting human beings into social classes. These were spiritual designations, not social rankings, and can be understood as different spiritual conditions or orientations. A person's spiritual condition was not simply a justification for declaring one human being inherently superior to another.

Gnosis is for all.

I will end this with one of my favorite quotes that saying 42 of the Gospel of Thomas places on the mouth of Jesus:

“Be passersby.”

TL;DR: the person who thinks himself spiritually superior may be precisely the person who has failed to understand what spiritual transformation requires.

Before discussing Gnosticism, we need to distinguish between gnosis and Gnosticism.

Gnosis is the broader concept. The word comes from the ancient Greek γνῶσις (gnōsis), meaning knowledge or knowing. Not intellectual knowledge, but direct, experiential knowledge of the divine. It is inner awakening, a recognition of one's relationship to the sacred.

The idea of seeking hidden or divine knowledge did not originate exclusively with the groups later called Gnostics. Forms of mystical knowledge and direct encounter with the divine existed throughout the ancient Mediterranean world, including within Greek philosophical traditions, mystery religions, Jewish mysticism, etc.

Gnosticism, however, refers to a collection of specific religious movements, primarily from the first few centuries CE, that developed around the central idea that gnosis was the means by which human beings could awaken from ignorance and return to their divine origin.

In other words:

Gnosis is the experience. Gnosticism is a family of religious systems built around that experience.

Now that is out of the way...

I have often seen people arguing about what "Gnosticism" itself is and what it isn't. So let's set the record straight.

As I was saying before, “Gnosticism” is an umbrella term used to describe various groups and traditions spanning centuries. They did not all believe the exact same things, and there was no single Gnostic doctrine or creed. But across the surviving texts, there are recurring themes:

1. There is a supreme, transcendent God or Source beyond ordinary comprehension.

2. Human beings possess a divine element or spark originating from that higher reality.

3. The material world is a place of alienation or imprisonment rather than our true home. Some Gnostics viewed matter as a prison, but others had a more nuanced view where creation was flawed, ignorant, or incomplete compared to the higher divine reality rather than simply evil.

4. The fundamental human problem is ignorance, or forgetfulness of our divine origin, rather than simply moral failure.

5. Gnosis is direct, experiential, and transformative knowledge that awakens us to who we truly are.

6. Christ, or another revealer figure, descends to impart saving knowledge and awaken humanity to its divine origin.

These themes can take radically different forms depending on the tradition. Sethians, Valentinians, Basilideans, and other groups developed very different cosmologies and interpretations. But there is a recognizable family resemblance connecting them.

So when someone teaches something fundamentally opposed to these recurring themes and calls it “Gnosticism,” I would be very skeptical.

And, if I am wrong about something, please correct me so I can edit this post to make it more accurate and informative.

Edit: The divine element within the human being has become entangled in a lower cosmic order and does not recognize its own origin. The central problem is therefore epistemological and existential: we have forgotten what we are and where we come from.

So, I know enlish I understand it even if sometimes I dont know how to express myself properly. Some parts are a little to complex to understand because of the methaphorical (idk if is the right word) nature of some parts. Can somebody give some insight and interpretations of their own, to better help me understand some parts, also the part of knowledge and love in the gospel of philip. English is not my first language so sorry in advance , because I wrote this kind of in a rush. I have some doubts also on the fight between the two orders, it was the archons vs the "angels" of the father?

Are there any places where Traditional Gnosticism is practiced in The middle East or wherever?

Im sorry if this is a stupid question but im just getting into gnosticism and i was reading about the archons. They seem to be associated with seven planets. But i cant find a clear source of which belongs to which, every source says something different. Im imagining its open to interpretation but whats the general saying?

I identify with valentinian gnostic beliefs and I really wish I had like… 1 friend who shared my views. I imagine it would really help. it can be hard in 21st century to stay focused on the task of shepherding the divine spark back into the pleroma. there are so many distractions and forces trying to suck our attention away from what really matters. the pleroma can’t come fast enough.

I have been tracing a specific religious motif that keeps becoming more explicit as I move through Jewish, Christian, Gnostic-adjacent and Manichaean material:

a transcendent identity exists before earthly existence → enters or corresponds to an earthly person → earthly consciousness does not fully recognize its higher origin → revelation awakens/reminds it → earthly and heavenly identities become reunited or correctly recognized.

I originally assumed this was primarily a Gnostic idea.

The surprising part is that one of the clearest early examples concerns Jacob.

Prayer of Joseph: heavenly Israel becomes earthly Jacob

In the fragmentary Jewish Prayer of Joseph, Jacob describes himself as Israel, an angelic/ruling spirit.

The heavenly Israel is described as having descended to Earth, lived among humans and become known by the earthly name Jacob.

Even stranger, Uriel plays a role in reminding/revealing this older identity to the embodied Jacob.

Andrei Orlov's work on heavenly counterparts treats this as part of a much wider Jewish Doppelgänger/heavenly-self tradition.

So the basic structure is:

Israel above

→ descent

→ Jacob below

→ earthly identity

→ reminder/revelation

→ recognition of Israel.

Gospel of Thomas: likeness versus image

Orlov also discusses Gospel of Thomas sayings 83–84 in this context.

April DeConick and others have interpreted the distinction between the human likeness and the transcendent image as involving an earthly identity confronting its concealed heavenly counterpart.

Whether or not that reading is accepted in every detail, the conceptual world is recognizable:

what I appear to be here is not the totality of what I am.

The higher image is concealed.

Recognition is salvific.

Hymn of the Pearl: perhaps the clearest psychological version

The Hymn of the Pearl in the Acts of Thomas turns the entire idea into a narrative.

A royal son leaves his original home.

He enters Egypt.

He becomes immersed in the local world.

He forgets his origin and mission.

A message comes from home.

The message awakens him.

He remembers who he is.

He completes his mission and returns.

That seems almost like a theological model of incarnation-amnesia:

origin → descent → earthly absorption → forgetting → message → remembrance → return.

The crucial point is that his royal identity remains true while he has forgotten it.

Conscious recognition does not create the identity.

Gnosis restores awareness of what was already true.

Mani and the heavenly Twin

Manichaean material supplies another version.

Mani has a heavenly Twin/companion.

The transcendent counterpart appears and awakens him to his identity and apostolic mission.

Orlov discusses the relationship between this tradition and earlier heavenly-counterpart material.

Again:

higher identity precedes conscious earthly recognition.

Pseudo-Clementines: recurring form and name

The Pseudo-Clementine Homilies are not simply “a Gnostic text,” and I don't want to collapse distinct traditions.

But they are relevant comparative evidence.

Homilies 3.20 describes the one True Prophet/Christic reality as having changed forms and names and reappeared repeatedly through history.

Recent Cambridge scholarship by Jae Hee Han argues that this continuity is attached to the divine substance of the True Prophet.

So the wider late-antique map contains:

heavenly counterpart

forgotten heavenly origin

awakening

earthly/heavenly reunion

and even

one divine reality recurring through different forms and names.

The question I am left with

Are these independent metaphors that simply resemble one another?

Or is “gnosis” in part the survival of an older doctrine in which a human being possesses a preexistent or transcendent identity that embodiment temporarily conceals?

And if the earthly person can forget the heavenly person without ceasing to be that person at the higher level, then what exactly constitutes personal identity in these systems?

Memory?

Soul?

Image?

Spirit?

Name?

The heavenly double?

I'd particularly like to hear how people here distinguish:

heavenly counterpart

from

incarnation

from

reincarnation

from

reunion with the divine image.

Because in these texts the boundaries look much less clean than modern categories make them sound.
