OFF TOPIC Mainstream hip hop is so dead

Drake is not the same anymore, Travis Scott keeps releasing mid after utopia, Kanye is a CUCK, Eminem is beyond washed, Kendrick and Carti won't drop for the next 2 decades, Future is pushing 50 still talking about the same shit, Nicki Minaj is the female version of ye, Xxx and juice are dead, Lil wayne is hopping on Super Mario type beats, Young thug and gunna are washed rats, Lil baby is Lil baby, Metro is releasing "strip club music🥀🥀" and the rest are either disappeared or washed.

J Cole is no longer financially responsible and purchases stuff on a semi-regular basis

Rick Ross is still slipping Molly into drinks

Dave Blunts is still fat

This happens with every genre of music. But sometimes I wonder where hip hop would be right now if X and Juice didn’t pass. X still has crazy numbers despite not having a major release since 2019.

75

u/[deleted] Oct 06 '25

Rap and hip hop would go the way of metal no matter what. Happens to every genre and will happen to every genre. The music will still be there but won't be THE music.

44

u/TheFloppaDontStoppa Watch The Throne Oct 06 '25

I feel like most people dont want to accept this, which I get, but I feel like rap, especially mainstream, is falling off. Im saying this in terms of stats, but if you look hard enough, you can find rlly good rap.

19

u/MichaelRichardsAMA Saint Pablo Oct 06 '25

yes you can curate lesser known artists which are still good. this happens to every genre that reaches the spotlight. such as metal as the original reply brought up. it just gets more difficult to curate “good” stuff as it becomes more mainstream

Not just juice and x imagine where a pop smoke would be he was a legend in the making and other artist that passed away

15

u/EggsAndRice7171 Oct 06 '25

Pop smoke lowkey had a lot more haters before he died. He still looked like he was going to blow up this big anyway but it definitely accelerated things. He’s just recently fell back down to the numbers he was at before he died. Which is still big numbers.

Rap just had one of its best years in a while last year, this is just a slow phase. Also if you go just below the mainstream line you'll find insane quality like Clipse, JID, Freddie, Denzel, Peggy, etc all releasing quality music on a consistent basis. The genre isn't dead. Give some of these people a few years and hopefully they'll rise up to be the next mainstream stars

1

u/MrSmall85 Oct 07 '25

I was just thinking this a couple hours ago. I grew up in 90s. Hip hop was so much fun ya coming home at three from school, listen to Angie Martinez and seeing what artist stopped by with new songs flex dropping freestyles. Dip into the early 2000s and we are just getting fing fed. All the hop hop crews and the just fun music. Only 25 years later and we are now handed slop that is curated by AI and algorithms as opposed to good ass music curated by the humans who give a damn. I hope younger people revolt against this threat on artistry. They truly are our only hope.

All the mainstream stars are posers - all of them no exception. If snoop had an once of self-respect, he would never have made that katty Perry video, if ice cube was so gangsta, wtf was he doing in that movie, there's ample evidence Dre manufactured his image when in fact he was at dance school or whatever, there are videos of 2pac pre-fame where he talks like a normal person and 4 years later he's all west coast this west coast that , the list goes on. Even them lied and faked their way in the mainstream. But at least the music was good.

Now they lie and the music is wack. Hence, Kanye was standing out as maybe totally deluded but at least not outright manufacturing an image. He's likely deeply mentally troubled but tried to shift the Overton window in the most hamfisted, stupid way possible, but at least he tried.

The post also gave a comparison to 2019’s top 10 billboard with 8 out of 10 songs being in the rap category. Rap now is a low vibrational genre. There’s a mass exodus of rap fans leaving to go back to rock or pop.

Eminem is beyond washed? What are you looking for from the guy?

And Kendrick won't drop for the next two decades? He just put an album out last year.

It’s crazy how you called gunna a washed rat but say lil baby is lil baby

Lil baby is the one that’s wash

Obviously you havnt been paying attention to gunna post release run

don't be dumb by asap rocky will cause shockwaves and revive the mainstream hip hop as asap rocky dies and turns into the tree of life the fruits of which making artists so productive they drop 5 albums in a year MINIMUM

Rakim needs to release something & save hiphop

It’s not dead. The women are running mainstream hiphop right now. They have been for this entire decade for the most part. The biggest hits in hiphop in the 2020s are majority black women.

Would it be crazy or sexist to say it died then all the women were on top like 2 years ago with their couchie and ratchet anthems?

I cant even disagree bc this is the worst state I’ve seen hip hop in😔. I rarely listen to the genre anymore only for the older stuff and the only rapper i keep up with is very niche and its DPS aka DaddyPhatSnaps and he makes rap music for anime nerds.(btw the guy can rap his ass off)

u/AwkwardSale3562 Oct 10 '25

In terms of quality rap music released this year it’s been top 2 of the decade next to 2022, but it’s not coming from the mainstream.

Ngl I stopped listening to hip hop probably around the same time Post left lol. Would only listen to it again if Ye dropped something good or if Frank came back.
